Salsa. Sour cream, comped watermelon Aqua Fresca. Honduran tamale (3.50), Salvadoran tamale(3) left to right
    Victor G.

Yuri's Restaurant is in Sombrerioto Loco's space. interior looks same. just take out now. offerings: Mexican, Salvadorean, Honduran eats eats: Chicken tamale (3.50, Honduran), Pork tamale (3, Salvadorean) -both tamales were very large, bigger than the usual cart offerings. Honduran one had firm masa, lots of chicken meats within, mostly dry Salvadorean tamale had semi-moist, smooth masa, a few pieces of juicy pork pieces, came with sour cream, green salsa. drink: watermelon aqua fresca (comped) -very addictive taste, lightly iced, with fresh watermelon flavor. there's sugar. unsure how much. it's mixed expertly. menu & pics didn't have pricing. would skip tamale next time. too dry. lots of other choices.

A friend and I spend the year going to the restaurants from San Francisco Chronicle's top 100 list…read moreand we finally made our way to Popoca. They are ranked #5 on the list so we have been excited to finally try it! We came on a Wednesday soon after opening and it was pretty quiet at the time. We got sat at a nice table in the patio and didnt waste any time before ordering some appetizers. We'd seen the menu before coming in and knew what we wanted We started with three appetizers: the yuca con hongos, guaca-mol & pollo campero. The yuca con hongos was my favorite. The little fried yuca balls were almost like a gnocchi texture that soaked up all of the sauce and paired well with the different mushrooms. The guaca-mol was a rich and savory flavor bomb. The beef oil and egg yolk added a lot of richness. With the thick tortilla had a fried bread texture that was so satisfying with the dip. The pollo campero was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The hot sauce it was served with was bright and subtly spicy. All in all it was a great start to the meal For our mains we decided to share a plate of papusas and their chancho con yuca (grilled pork chop). The papusas were being grilled outside in the patio so it was really nice watching them be made. We got the papusas de loroco, de hongos and de lengua. All were solid but our favorite was actually the lengua, or beef tongue. The meat was so tender like a stewed meat and was well seasoned all the way through. All of the papusas had a nice subtle smoky flavor from that grill that was really nice. The chancho con yuca was flavorful though it was a tad overcooked. Not offensively so but just noticeably. It happens. We finished with their quesadilla con horchata for dessert. It was tasty but not necessarily the dessert for me. I like salty and sweet but the dish read more savory than I was expecting. Still had good flavor but just wasn't my preference. Overall we were really happy with our experience here. We had some clear favorite dishes but even the dishes that weren't our favorite were still very enjoyable. The service overall was solid as well. We'd be happy to come back and try some more menu items.

I ordered one of each vegan option they had, plus a pina chicha drink. The food was delicious, and I really enjoyed the presentation. The salad was refreshing, and the beans were tasty. The drink was good. It reminded me a bit of kombucha but was a bit too sweet for my liking. While I enjoyed the meal, I wish they had a vegan section, including vegan protein. I know it's not advertised as vegan, but I have a feeling they could make a really great tofu or soy curl dish for the vegans. Just a heads-up: there's only one bathroom, and the line got quite long, so I had to wait a bit.

I believe this space was a Burmese restaurant called Tharaphu a few years back. They made a decent…read moretea leaf salad but without the tableside show. I doubt that made much difference to their clientele, but in its place is another family-run business, this time Salvadoran. This one offers more generic plates at student-friendly prices for undiscriminating palates. That's at least my take in the couple of occasions I've tried it after going to the gym. The first time I tried it I couldn't see the menu until I got up to the order counter. Then I made the server wait since the menu was so comprehensive (Photo 5). I went basic and ordered the $16.99 Chicken Platter because the kabob version was five dollars more. It was decent enough though on the bland side with rice, fresh tomato salsa, and a small side salad of iceberg lettuce, sliced cucumber, and radish (Photo 9). The menu mentioned a house white sauce. I didn't see it, but I also didn't miss it either. I came back to try them again. I tried ordering the $14.99 Scrambled Eggs with Beef Chorizo but was told they were out of chorizo. This was looking to be a recurring theme because I was rebuffed the first time when I unsuccessfully ordered the beef gyro. Ironically this time they had the $16.99 Beef Gyro Platter. The rice and salad were identical to my previous platter, the beef was just OK (Photo 10). FOOD - 3 stars...middling meats, edible but not overly appetizing AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...spacious enough and nicely decorated SERVICE - 3 stars...minimal communication on the food and when it will be ready TOTAL - 3 stars...fitting for a student appetite, good enough for the rest of us if expectations are kept in check RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? Service was super slow and I was one of 3 people there when they opened. Not sure what was going on. They also took forever to make my food. The birria was lacking flavor was was super chewy. Needed to be more tender.
