My fiancé and I decided to try Yu's Mandarin for the first time last night. For our appetizer, we ordered the Crab Rangoon and were pleasantly surprised by how big they were. They were also delicious. The sweet and sour sauce on the table was flavorful and complimented them well. For dinner, I ordered the Mapo Bean Curd and he ordered the Kung Pao Chicken. The portions were huge! We both enjoyed our meals at the restaurant. Now, let me tell you why I rated this place 1 star... ***Today, I decided to re-heat 1/2 of the remaining portion for lunch. Halfway into my meal, I discovered a completely unidentifiable 2-inch stretch of spongy flesh resembling that of a small animal's twisted intestine. I have no idea what it was but it made my stomach turn immediately. This piece of flesh was clearly not intended for human consumption. It looked nothing like anything else in my dish! We ordered $240 worth of food on Xmas Eve for delivery. After 2 hours after placing the order, we called to check on the order. We were told that they were understandably busy, and that it should be to us in 40 minutes. After another hour, we called and they said they couldn't find our order and to call back. After our third call, they realized it was their fault, and that they would happily deliver all our food, which was sitting out now for hours, at a discounted rate of $50. At this point our family of 6 had eaten and no longer needed the probably bacteria ridden food. They apologized and said they would refund the money. Well, I just called my credit card company to verify that this purchase refund had been started. Nope. Tsk, tsk Yus. You have lost our business and anyone we tell about this adventure. read more

There is something really puzzling about this place. This restaurant has a cult following of Asians who have joined from the 70s-80s. This restaurant does a fantastic job of convincing every Asian in the area that this is the best Chinese restaurant in Chicagoland. When ANYONE mentions about going to Chinese food, this place ALWAYS pops up. I don't get it. I really don't. Whatever magic or marketing ploy these guys have used works...stunningly well. If you are businessman planning on opening a restaurant, observe and learn from these guys as this restaurant along with Le Colonial and Japonais are at the epitome of popular and profitable restaurants serving mediocre food in the Chicagoland area. The one interesting thing to note about this place is that they were the first ones in Chi-town area to open up their kitchen so that you can watch the food being prepared through a glass window. Oh how marvelous. Yeah. We're living in the 21st century now. The kitchen is absolutely huge. I'm guessing there are around 20-30 chefs in there. That's no surprise considering this place fills around 500-600 people on a given night. This restaurant is well known for their Korean Chinese cuisine. I'm not going to go into detail about the food because nothing is outside of the ordinary. It is quite sad that the Chicago area does not have any good Korean-chinese restaurants. If you haven't been here and someone insists on going, you're going to be hard pressed to say no as most fans are overly enthusiastic about this place. My advice is to be mentally prepared to "suck it up" if it does not match your expectations of authentic, good chinese food. read more

Yu's is honestly my #1 favorite restaurant of the suburbs. My whole (hardcore Chinese) family is a big fan of Yu's, even though it's always packed to the brim--you know it's good, then, right? The best best best dishes (in my opinion) are the walnut shrimp (NO other place does it like Yu's, seriously, take my word on this one) and the Peking noodles. The noodles are homemade at the restaurant and sometimes you can even catch the noodle show while you're eating. The staff is good, although sometimes you may have trouble getting water refills depending on how busy the place is at the time. Parking is a bit hard to find on the weekends though, as Yu's shares a parking lot with a few other businesses and an Outback. I wish they would just expand the parking situation there by putting a garage behind the strip mall or something, but whatever. I will always, always go back to Yu's whenever I'm in Schaumburg. read more

I have frequented Yu's in the past couple of years and boy has it gone downhill. I do know they changed management, which may explain the pitfalls of what used to be a great dining experience for celebrations. My family and I went there for a graduation dinner and had made a reservation for 11 with a pre-order of peking duck. The hostess was great about checking to see if our table was ready and seating us since our entire party was not present. The food was not how I remembered it, very disappointing and only memorable for the lack of taste and quality. Coming from a Chinese family, we ordered a lot of food to feed everyone. The fried rice lacked flavor and definitely needed soy sauce to be somewhat edible. The wonton soup was disgusting: the dumplings were good, but the broth tasted as if they boiled the vegetables in water and then used that water as the broth. The only tasty item was the Peking duck. I can't even remember what else my family ordered because they definitely were not memorable. Needless to say, my family will not be coming back here. read more

Yu only has 3.5 stars as an average? (as of 9/15/2013) Who switched these peoples' tea with steaming cups of haterade? My parents treated me to this place, and I was at first skeptical. My dad's insistence on Golden Corral, Ryan's and Old Country Buffet while growing up as a child led to some unwanted side effects (a bland food palette and childhood obesity... to name a few). But I digress, here's the breakdown. What we ordered: Mei Cai Roasted Pork: came with steamed rice buns. Amazing. Noodle platter: a little salty, but pretty good nonetheless. Homemade also. Crispy duck: First steamed, then deep fried. A wee bit dry, but the skin was spot on. Hits: -The food, for the most part, was flavorful and unique. I think it's every bit as good as the selections in Chinatown. -The ambiance was wonderful. Every detail or decor decision seemed thought out. You are able to see the kitchen through a glass window. Seeing the flames envelope the wok contents is mesmerizing. -The waiting time is pretty short, even if there is a line (we were back 4 spots and still got seated in 10 mins) -The prices are pretty reasonable for a seemingly fancy Chinese atmosphere. The bill for the above was around $40, considering 2 of the selections are house specials and the portions were enough to get leftovers, that wasn't too bad. Misses: -This is in between a hit and a miss, but they did a presentation where they introduced their chefs by turning off all the house lights and allowing the entire restaurant to be lit by the flames of their woks. Cool, but I feel like a near-blackout with a barely audible sound system isn't OSHA approved. -The saltiness could have been turned down a notch. -Our server wasn't as jubilant or attentive as a few of the reviews mentioned. As a strange aside, his name tag actually read, "Peter Pan". Him being a middle-aged Chinese man, I highly doubted the validity of this piece of identification. Classic, authentic Chinese. No friends, this is not ManchWok or Panda Express - Yu's offers incredible chinese eats. While I live in Charlotte now, I routinely drop by the burbs of Chicago and Yu's is always a "need to feed" for me. I'm a huge fan of their Schezwuan Shrimp - good sized prawns (not fried) in a spicy but semi-sweet sauce. These tasty little crustaceans come with a side of steamed broccoli and white rice. Also, their potstickers are pretty incredible. The perfect dumpling - great noodle consistency and a great pork filling. While I've tried them both steamed and fried, my belly says fried is my fave. It's very lightly fried, though. Overall, the portions are fairly generous and the quality is superb. I've eaten from Yu's for more than a decade and I can honestly say that I've never had a bad meal from this tasty little treasure. The interior is nicely appointed, but, honestly, I've mainly ordered take out the last few times, so I don't have a crystal clear picture. Price wise, Yu's is a bit more expensive than some other standard Chinese joints in the area, but it is fully worth it! Yay for authentic Chinese fare! read more

Terrible catering service. Our store will never recommend this restaurant. Our store ordered catering at Yu to deliver on 1/26. We placed the order on Wednesday for two different time delivery 12 pm and 7pm. We waited and gave them a call and found out they haven't even start the order. Then the second delivery is also late. The order didn't get here until 7:15. No one even call or apologized on their action. When we called them, they said they will give us $20 for the next order. This is my go-to place whenever I'm craving Chinese food. I especially like their Taiwan Beef Noodle Soup, Sweet and Sour Pork, and Combination Fried Rice. Portions are pretty big, so it's best if you ordered to eat family style instead of individually. They're constantly busy especially around dinner time so you might have to wait a bit, especially if you're ordering to-go. Make sure to call in advance if you're ordering takeout so you don't wait too long! read more

The last time I ate here was in 1996. We were in the area & starving so I was pleasantly surprised to see that Yu's was still open. Not only is it open...it appears to be thriving. I don't remember exactly what we ordered (my memory crashes when I'm hungry), but all the dishes were fantastic. The other guests seemed to enjoy their dining experience as well. Way better a couple years ago. From what I read there are new owners, and clearly not reflecting well in the food. The soup I get everytime is O-Kayy... It was better before. This time, they put random WEIRD chuncks of seafood, very crunchy cartilage-like piece that make your skin crawl when it's in your mouth. It refreshing to eat ethnic Chinese food. I'm so sick of the pseudo, salted up, MSG Chinese you get at other places. The more I eat here, the more I like it. The food is excellent. We order the spicy vegetable noodles and the Sesame beef. The service is sort of charming. It's not attentive, but charming. I like going to a Chinese restaurant where the servers are Chinese speaking people. I guess it's a cultural thing. The restaurant design is very plain. I really wouldn't mind if they charged a couple bucks more to update the place. Although, the glass wall into the kitchen is worth going to see. It's cool. I don't understand some of the marginal reviews? If you can get better Asian, in the Northwest suburbs, please tell me the restaurant. UPDATE: I had to downgrade Yu's. We've been going to the Asian Bistro and like it more. Yu's is well run, but they were half pushing us out the door last time and the ambiance is sort of Greek diner. Yu's still earns a solid four stars! My friend and I came here the other day, and the service was MUCH better than the last time I went. I didn't feel rushed or hurried, the waiter was very attentive, and I felt like my friend and I were able to take our time. My friend and I came here on a Tuesday night at about 7:30. We were seated right way by the hostess, who was one of the sweetest people I have ever met in my life!!! But anyway, even thought it was past "normal" dinnertime, the dining room was hopping, and there were only a couple available tables. The same goes for when I left. This is really a testament to how good their food is! We ordered the "sampler platter" that included crab rangoon, shrimp toast, some meat on sticks, and eggrolls. All of them were delicious! I got a salad, and all they have is their house dressing, but that's all they need!! It was amazing! For our main meal, I had the Garlic Chicken, as usual, and my friend had some spicy chicken w/ peppers. It was really good and flavorful, with just a hint of spice. It was not overpowering, which was nice! My garlic chicken was, as always, amazing. The only thing that keeps this from being a five star review is that they have SERIOUSLY cut down on their portions. The garlic chicken used to be absolutely heaping on the plate making me look at in that "I-will-have-leftovers-for-days" kind of a way. This time, despite my eating a TON of the appetizer, was still able to eat well over half of the now-meager-looking pile of chicken. Don't get me wrong, it was still delicious, but when you cut down THAT MUCH on the portions, but not the price, you're going to get dinged a star!! As all the reviews show, this place is quite popular. So if you come during a common eating period, be prepared to wait. Without question, always order the honey glazed walnut shrimp. Our other regular items we order are the mongolian beef and the szechwan eggplant and of course, start the meal off with a hot and sour soup! service is usually pretty attentive, altho they do have their off nights. we did try and reserve this place for our rehearsal dinner a couple of years back and were quite taken back when the only options were at 5pm or 830pm. the reason? he didn't want to hold tables for two or more hours. not quite accommodating, but I see why they are doing it. oh well, we'll still be back for the good food! read more

Disappointed. I now live in Texas and was looking forward to coming back to eat here for late lunch. The server advised that we order asap before the kitchen close for the afternoon (currently around 2:30pm) so we ordered in the spot. I was eating the kung pao chicken and thought it felt slimy and smooth. I ate about 2 more bites and I could figure out why it feels that way so I spit it out. The chicken was NOT COOKED!!! Server was really nice and took it away asap and apologized and comp that dish. I think the cooks were rushing to cook. My other sister ate it too and my son had the sauce from it. Met with a friend for lunch and drinks at Yu's yesterday. For the most part the food was average however we ordered the Dungeness crab w yolk listed at Market Price. We didn't think a restaurant with high level of integrity would jade their customers. As my friend was a regular customer and was greeted by the Manager. The check came and Yu charged us $45 for a 1.5 lbs crab. The local grocer is selling it for $10.99 a lbs. Perhaps its my lesson learn for not asking upfront but whatever happened to good faith and business ethics. Will not return to this restaurant for it's lack of integrity. read more

Yus is very inconsistent. Sometimes they have the best Chinese food and best service, other times it feels like a completely different restaurant. I have tried most of their food on their menu. When it is good, it is amazing but otherwise they make the biggest mistakes. My favorites are the jajangmuyn and sesame chicken with fried rice. This has so many different options to eat. read more

Best Chinese-Korean food ever! The owners are Chinese but grew up in Korea. So they know what Koreans like! They have a separate Korean menu. Whenever I'm in the area, I always make sure to stop in to get the spicy noodle platter! I also love the Szechwan style prawns and the Korean sweet and sour beef or pork (a clear sauce, not red or pink). The Mabo tofu is also good. Go with a lot of people so you can order a bunch of different things (or go by yourself and order just as much!!!) Sooooo goood...too bad they only have one location in Schaumburg. NOM NOM NOM! I have been here twice and I have never had any issues. I have also tried a number of things on the menu and it has all been very tasty. I'm surprised to hear the negative reviews! I haven't had any bad service at all. Everyone is always very nice. It does get VERY busy so calling ahead might be a good idea. I hosted a gathering here and had a great experience. Suburban restaurants specializing in Chinese food are forced to over-serve the meats and under-serve the vegetables. Dishes that in China would have great vegetables with them have none or next to none, just lots of beef, pork, or chicken. That's just what one has to do to survive in suburbia. Given that constraint... We had a fabulous meal and everyone went away happy. Their attitude was welcoming and the service was nonstop perfect. The atmosphere was uneventful, but the place was spacious and clean. We had many of the standard Mandarin and Szechwan dishes. Outstanding were the moo shoo pork, the stir fried string beans, and the two whole red snappers. Only the fried rice was disappointing. And, of course, the other concession to the suburbs - nothing was spicy. I don't intend to try other Chinese restaurants in this area. Yu's Mandarin came through for me and is my choice if in this area. read more

This place is a staple for Chinese food in the area. It's been around for ages and you can watch the chefs cook through the clear glass. They have so many items on and off the menu. I love their black Peking noodle (jjajangmyun) and spicy seafood soup (jjampbbong). The noodles are always made fresh too. Their honey walnut shrimp is great! Crab rangoon does lack some crab at times but better than most places. This place is great for large dinner parties with their hugely round tables. I've been here a million times throughout the ages and never had a bad experience. The food is always great too if you know what to order. I highly recommend reservations on the weekends. They also have a great lunch menu and now they deliver if you live close by but there is a minimum that you have to spend. Kind of bs because if you want food for yourself, you have to order a lot of food. They used to host a lot of noodle making shows... I wonder what that's like. read more

Large busy operation.. clean and bright for Chinese restaurant standards. Huge kitchen and food was brought out promptly. We ordered 4 different entrees. Food here was not good. Bland. Not enough veggies per meat ratio. Cashew Chicken was served with DARK MEAT. Boneless thighs. I don't like dark meat. It isn't specified in menu. I complained and talked to owner. Jeff. He says that's how we do it for 30 yrs and how they do it in China and I should have requested White Meat. Yo Jeff!! How n can I request it if it don't say so in the menu..and yo Jeff, this is Schaumburg, not China. Even other entrees featuring white meat were rubbery. As a restauranteur, I knew he was using the cheaper high injection chicken breast (up to 15% saline). It's hard finding good Chinese. It really is. But I'm sure there are better spots in area. I've been going to Yu's for over ten years. I think they recently acquired new owners or something. The menu has expanded to include more "authentic" dishes, however their dinner prices have also gone up. While Yu'a used to be a favorite destination, something in the last year or two has changed and now it seems like more of a "I guess we will go to Yu's" decision when all other options have failed. The wait staff is attentive and friendly, refilling water just about each time they do their rounds. Appetizers are promptly brought out. I suggest the pot stickers. Can't go wrong with those! The entrees are plentyfull in selection, chicken, pork, beef, vegan...they have it all. The sauces seem...kind of heavy as of late and not as flavorfull as I remember them. All in all, stick with the lunch special, $6.95 for lunch here is a steal. read more

Being an out of towner looking for a place to eat, a place with this many reviews is way to enticing to not try. So needing some dinner to-go to take to my hotel thats nearby, I stopped in. I wish I didn't. From the moment I walked in, the service was cold. Wait a minute you are asking, how can service be cold? The hostess was chatting with another waitstaff and I had to somewhat interrupt them to ask where to go to order to-go, she then points to the front counter. I take a couple steps up to the counter and there was no one there, so I turned around again and had to interrupt the two's conversation again to ask for a menu. That way I can at least decide what I want for when the cashier comes back. After about a minute, the cashier comes back, I made my order of Szechuan eggplant, paid and was told to come back in 15 minutes. That whole experience just left a bad taste in my mouth. So the other thing that caught me by suprise is the dish itself. I know I am only rating the food based on one plate, but I am normally used to Szechuan being a spicy brown sauce. Instead, they batter their eggplant, fry it and its tossed in some glaze and spice. It wasn't spicy at all. The place looks pretty nice. Would be a good location for a date night. Maybe I am just biased because I personally prefer more hole in the wall joints. read more

They've taken chinese food (Mandarin and Schezuan) to a whole new, industrial seating level here. They got us and another party the same number so when they called # 83 we didn't know who to sit first. But it worked out in the end. When we did get to our table they dropped by two glasses of iced water and a carafe of hot tea, which we had to distribute among us as the bus person didn't put them on our place settings. I believe all around we must have been serviced in total by about 4-5 individuals, including the manager who came to get and process our bill when we were ready to pay. The food we ordered was not presented in any spectacular way, but was tasty. The spring rolls were presented on a bed of slightly brown-edged shredded lettuce, which left us wondering about the quality of follow-up dishes. The vegetarian noodles bowl tasted very good, although the portion was far too much for me. My significant other ordered their schezuan chicken which came with a small bowl of rice and a huuuge oval platter filled to the brim with reddish-golden nuggets. He said it was tasty, but far too much for one person, or even two. I was surprised by the smallish vegetarian section, but glad there were some choices. We capped the night with a bowl of (canned) lychees which were served with some of the syrup and over ice cubes -- as they usually are everywhere else as well, unless they're fresh and you need to de-shell them. We were approximately an hour later than when the noodle show would have been taking place, but having seen a similar showing on the food network we didn't feel like we missed much. The plexi-walled kitchen did provide some entertainment in-between conversation bursts, though since it was lit with halogen (bluish) light it was a little glum and looked awefully hot in there for our six chefs. 2 family favorites in a row! I can write a review alone on just their walnut shrimp. It is to die for! Very hard to find dish at many Asian restaurants, as it is with sinfully succulant shrimp, topped off with a creamy, honey sauce, some steamed broccali done perfectly, and some walnuts to garnish/enhance....(sigh) heaven All the seafood is great here, as they have a nice selection and various preparations. Auntie loves the pike fish, with steamed preparation. Cousin loves the sweet and sour. Friend loves the braised fish with onions....the list goes on and on They do have tradtional fare at this restaurant, but I recommend you go off the beaten path and try some of the stuff you wouldn't normally find at other chinese take outs Bring the whole family, they have room!!!! read more

So this is the problem with this place. They tote "authentic Chinese" from the Northern region of China. However, a majority of the food is breaded and fried. It may be that we ordered the wrong things but the s/s pork. Fried. The sesame chick. Fried. The garlic scallops. Fried. The salt pepper squid. Fried. Everything started to taste the same after awhile. We also ordered the noodle platter. Not impressed. The flavor was good but the noodle was too soft to be hand pulled. I like my hand pulled noodle aldente with some bite to it. The beef broccoli was a cornstarchy mess. Authentic Chinese food does not taste like this. This place is definitely catering to an American clientele. I did notice alot of people ordering jjampong which is the only dish among a sea of fried items ( hot fish/honey walnut shrimp) that I may come back for. read more

The set up of the restaurant is great with the cooking performance. The food is a bit pricey but authentic. I was under the impression that the noodles in their soups are hand pulled, but I knew that was not the case as I've had noodles during lunch that weren't springy. The waitress admitted that they only had it during the evening but the noodles were still made in house. Great for a unique date night but be prepared for long lines. read more

This may be one of the few places in/around/near Chicago that offers a noodle making demo (think Jackie Chan in Mr. Nice Guy). The place is clean and the service is attentive. Their dining area is huge but business is good so you may want to make reservations. The offerings are quite tasty and the noodles... well you really can't beat fresh noodles in any cuisine. Lunch specials are available and quite a steal for the amount of food you get. My favorite is probably their Princess Prawns and Mongolian Beef. Every time I eat at Yu's, I think to myself, maybe we should move out of the city so we could eat here every day. I know that's mental but I really love their food. With the boys in tow, we popped in last night had another feast. We had Mongolian beef, sesame chicken, salt/pepper prawns without shell and rice. Everything was perfect. The sesame chicken took number one honors, and the prawns came in second. I think that the beef came in last because we tend to make it spicer at home than how they make it. This place is very kid friendly, and the kids find the experience of watching the cooks very entrancing. The staff there also likes kids too. read more

Service Service Service....I really wanted to give more stars but the service was just so poor! We asked for one of our dishes to be made with extra sauce and it was not. We then asked if we could have some more sauce when it was served....5 minutes later another waiter came over asking if we wanted more sauce...we said yes. Then again the original server came and asked if we wanted the sauce and that it would be an extra charge....again we said yes. By the time they brought it over it was all gone and we didn't want it anymore. They also never refilled our water. And dishes were brought out separately, a big pet peeve of mine....why would someone want to watch the other person eat?? The food was very good, I was feeling sick and wanted noodles and the beef flat noodles were some of the best I have had. The egg drop soup was also delish. Okay, I think they've changed ownership once again. No biggie, but what has been a constant irritation in the last month is their phone system. I've attempted to order Yu's weekly for the last 3 weeks. Each time I call their number, I'm told the line is busy (by a recorded operator). When I finally got through the last two times, I was put on hold for 5+ minutes. I picked up my food in one instance on a busy Thursday night and stood in the foyer waiting almost 10 minutes before someone arrived at the counter, even though other staff could clearly see me standing there...including the bartender and hostess (could they not have flagged someone down?). I tried to call tonight to place another order, lo and behold, I couldn't get through again. I stopped trying after 15 minutes and ended up ordering from Bistro Dragon instead. BTW - they do have an online ordering system. I no longer use that either since when I did, my order never got placed (and I had to call to check on it...and of course got stuck in the phone system runaround). read more

Met a friend here for a quick lunch. Had to wait just a few minutes for a table, but less than 10 minutes. The lunch menu is typical but diverse. The Honey Walnut Shrimp is a must. So good! The sesame chicken was quite good. Serving hot tea along with water as a standard was a welcome treat. The wait staff was quick, efficient and attentive. read more

Yu's not horrible, let me start by stating that. However, when everyone's raving about it, I figured they may be on to something. I had given Yu's 2-3 tries and frankly, it is all show and OK food. I know lots of Chinese restaurants have been modified for the American tastebuds but even with this acceptance, I've never been blown away by it. Each time I visit, the service is lackluster. But I've come to expect not to expect an all-out red carpet welcome from them. read more
