Make sure to go early during dinner time because it gets pretty busy! The place was very dark inside which I loved! The waiters are very, very friendly as well and super cute! We had to come here twice to have dinner because it was so delicious! My boyfriend ordered the mini katsudon the first time and for the second visit, he wanted to order a bigger katsudon which is not on the menu. He said it was very delicious amd the best katsudon in Portland since he critiques katsudon so much. Lol. On the other hand, I ordered the caesar salad and the kakuni ramen which was BOMB. The meat is soo tender and has a gingery taste to it and their broth was very rich and yummy. Their salad has a very uniqued dressing which I loved! I'm full. Like Don B. said, its a hole in the wall. But I have found in my years in Japan that the hole in the wall places make some of the best ramen. (Tokyo street vendors are just tops.) Today I asked for the scallops on the appetizer menu but they no longer serve that and offered deep fried scallops. They were good. On the the Kakuni Ramen. Nice flavors I remember from my landlords ramen shop in Japan. Like Don B. said, not the best. It is a good bowl of ramen, salty, with flavor. I went for second dinner, some nice Katsudon. Well, it came out in a nice bowl but it was uncovered. Since it is uncovered all the steam escapes and egg stays runny. Okay, not a big problem for me but still it will be nice to have the egg mostly cooked. I ate about a quarter of it and took home the rest. Pretty hard to find at night -look for the lighted open sign without a business name sign near it. They just have a very understated sign stenciled in white on the door Its a small place similar to the ramen joints I've been to in other cities - completely open kitchen with some bar seating and a few tables. Maneki neko (lucky cat) to greet you at the door along with an adorable Japanese waitress. Pretty simple menu- we went with the gyoza, fried ika/squid, katsu donburi and the kakuni ramen. Gyoza was TINY almost more like siu mai and flavor just wasn't there, so pass. Ika was really good although it was disconcerting how much they looked like onion rings. Katsu don is tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet), eggs and onions over a bowl of rice with donburi sauce. Not sure what donburi sauce is exactly, but its kind of like a sweetened soy sauce. Very good and super filling. The ramen's egg noodles were just ok, but the kakuni broth was amazing! Super rich and complex, it just said pork flavored soup but looked like tonkotsu - cloudy white, made from cooked down pork bones and marrow. The pieces of pork belly were probably the best I've ever had. The fat practically melts in your mouth. Delicious food. Genuinely kind people. Cozy atmosphere. We ordered Ton Kotsu Ramen, Miso Soup, and the Gyoza (Dumplings). Everything was delicious and flavorful. You could tell they were handmade. Perfectly crispy and fried on one side and soft and silky on the other. The ramen was also yummy and a great price at only $9. A big portion for me! Compared to my favorite ramen place in Portland, it tasted just as good but a couple bucks cheaper. I will definitely be back. Oh also definitely add the chili oil to your food. This review is based on one experience at YUZU, and only with consideration of the Kakuni Ramen Soup and tseukemono (pickles). Oh, and the fact that this place has NO store front business sign and is super busy. Awesome. The fact that when I walked in, almost everyone was Japanese, including the cook and the waitress and the place was packed. Good signs. This already changes my expectations of the place, this should be good... I consider tonkatsu noodle soup as Japanese soul food. First of all, it is ramen. Who doesn't love ramen? I mean even the cheap ramen that comes in those styrofoam cups. When you're on the go and hungry, it's such a great snack! Admit it, it's like a guilty pleasure. I decided to give YUZU a try, even though it is across town, and a 20 minute drive from my house. Only my second half would know my hankerings for some tonkatsu ramen. I've had maybe 8 different preparations of tonkatsu (pork flavored ramen) all over the west coast. Not all are great, this realized after eating many different preparation styles of tonkatsu. The broth, oh the broth, when it's done right, it is salty, creamy, and flavorful, but not overly salty (and hopefully made with real slow cooking pork bones). The cha sui and pork belly are tender, and the noodles are not overcooked. There is a nice ratio in regards to the green onions, seaweed, mushrooms, broth, noodles, and meat. Yum. YUZU has two kinds of pork ramen, Kakuni and tonkatsu. The only real difference is that Kakuni has pork belly. Now how can I pass that up? AMAZING! First mental note was the ramen...it's different. It's not like the ramen you think of, the squiggly stuff. It's more like round skinny soba minus the buckwheat flavor. Another note was that everything else about the soup was amazing! I recently went here and had a great experience - it is small inside, so be prepared to be cozy with your diner and fellow patrons, and there is not sign on the outside of it, so it is hard to find. Based on other reviews, looks like this is a common complaint, and also an easy fix, so I knocked a star off for that. The food - great portion sizes, great prices, and great taste. Beaverton doesn't have a ton of great ramen options but this is definitely the best I have had. I just got the traditional/basic ramen and it was perfect. I would recommend starting with this, and then going back to try other options (or at least that is what I plan on doing). Excited for my next visit!! read more

One of the best ramen places I have been to. The food was so, so good. I cannot reccomend it enough. The main downside is that you maybe have to get lucky to get a seat, especially if you have a group. But the atmosphere is sweet, and the servers were incredibly polite. I heard about Yuzu from a student of mine - and I'm so glad that I was told exactly where it was, or I think I would have been lost due to the lack of signage - like... really. No signage. Please get a sign on your storefront! I almost went somewhere else because I wasn't sure where the place was (that's really my only reason for docking a star). But on to the good stuff - this place really is one of those great tiny hole in the walls that are SO worth the wait. Thankfully, we came at a perfect time and only had to wait about 5 minutes, but it could have been worse, because there are very few tables. But again, I would wait for this ramen. Now, I'm not a huge seafood or asian food person in general, so I was slightly hesitant. But I made my decision and both versions of ramen at our table were DELICIOUS. And the prices are so reasonable! If I'm ever craving ramen, I would go back here in an instant. And there were several other things on the menu that I was wanting to try as well. They didn't balk at my asking to leave items out or put them on the side either, which is always nice. I can't wait to come back -- at least i know where to go now! read more

Probably the best ramen I've had in Portland. My husband and I lived in New York for several years and are huge ramen fans. We recently went to Japan and I can say that Yuzu is pretty legit. The broths are flavorful but not over powering, not too greasy or too saline. The noodles are cooked al dente and the thin noodles are the perfect width which provides the perfect texture that compliments the broth very well. The kakuni and ton katsu ramen are probably our favorite.. You are paying for great food, not the ambiance.. so ignore all those who comment on the decorations or the fact that it's difficult to find. We had great customer service so can't complain, but we don't come here for that.. the food is what keeps us coming back. I actually think it's cool that it's kind of hidden.. you must also try the black sesame pudding by mios delectable.. it's our favorite!!! read more

I don't give a lot of 5 star rating and this place is well worth is. You have a bit of options for good Ramen in the Beaverton/Portland area and I would have to say that this place is a solid option! They have a variety of ramens to order from, which is perfect for my group of friends.  We ended up talking about what makes a good ramen - and in my opinion, it's hard to compare 'ramen' in general because there are so many different types! The broth here is amazing; I probably drank more of it than noodles. Service here is also excellent. The only thing about Yuzu is that it is hard to find. The sign on the door is worn out. This place was so hard to find! There are no signs! Just the name on the door! Look for a place called Dede and it's right next door. Authentically Japanese. Dimly lit, small, and packed with Japanese business men getting dinner and drinks...must be good and so it was! Flavors were delicate, light, and tasteful. Ramen was so good, I drank the broth. I've eaten at many in different cities and Japan and this was very traditional flavored ramen without the over heavy oils and salt. I would love to come back! There were only 2 servers, so I had to flag them down sometimes. But no worries! Food came at a good pace and they kept my drinks filled. Yuzu wasn't exactly family-friendly, but had bowls, drinks, and spoon for my 1 yr old. I was able to order some tofu and tamago for him. Yum! The kids and I had lunch for the first time at Yuzu today. The food was absolutely delicious, the environment inviting, the servers were fantastic, and I love that they have cute, child specific utensils, bowls and cups. I had the Kakuni Ramen. It was so good I think I would have gobbled down another bowl if it was there, even though it would be far too much, and I would be sick. For the kids I got gyozas, White rice, pork belly, and Edemame. I think it was the best I've ever seen the kids eat in a restaurant. The pork belly was the best i've had, it was in my soup as well. For my husband I got "to go" the Shoyu Ramen. I was doubtful he would like it, because he can be Mr. picky, especially when it comes to ethnic food, and especially when it comes to ethnic soups. It's been awhile since I last visited Yuzu - and in my book: Best Ramen in Portland! This little mom-and-pop, hole-in-the-wall restaurant serves up really authentic dishes at affordable prices. Since my last visit here, you couldn't even find the name to the place on the front of their door (since it was written in Japanese), but now they actually have their name posted in English (with a black and gold sticker). KAKUNI RAMEN is their house special ramen, also their number one seller since it's considered to be the yummiest ramen in town! I totally agree! The broth is so savory, very flavorful, that it's got you lip smacking and thinking "Damn! This is SOoooOOo GOOD!" Not to mention the tender pieces of pork and pork belly, it'll make you feel the same way. The noodles are fresh and it's quite unbelievable! ($11.50) TONKATSU RAMEN is another fave of mine. The pork broth filled with yummy, tender pieces of pork belly and fresh ramen have surprising flavors - so overwhelming that your taste buds are amazed! AGEDASHI TOFU is a simple hot dish appetizer. There are six pieces of fried tofu, which are served with green onion and a warm, savory, soy-sauce broth. Very light and delicious. Careful, that the tofu can be a bit hot when served. Nonetheless, it's a palette pleaser! Service is decent at Yuzu. My waitress was very kind and friendly. Food came out at a decent amount of time. I highly recommend making reservations since it's quite a small venue. They do accept walk-ins, but you may have to wait for an hour or two. I made reservations at 6PM when they opened. Although I was running late due to traffic, I called to inform them, and they were able to still secure my table as I came in 10 minutes later. (Thanks Yuzu!) To know Yuzu... to really know Yuzu, you only really need to know two words: Kakuni Ramen. After many stories, many legends, much murmur, and dare I say hype, I finally made the long, arduous trek over the river and through the suburban woods to Yuzu, the tiny little Japanese hole-in-the-wall out in Beaverton that allegedly serves up the best ramen in Portland. My friend who recently banished himself to a life in the suburbs had been aching for me to come out to the hinterlands, so I came, I saw, and I ate... ... and it was good. We started with 2 apps, the saba (pickled mackerel) and the natto age (natto wrapped in shiso then deep fried). The mackerel was good. Nothing mind-blowing, but tasty. The natto age was heady and tasty, but a tad flat. The shiso lost some of its zing in the deep frying process, but haad a nice crispy texture, and the natto inside added a base fermented flavor to the flat, batter flavor from the frying. Both my dining partner and I found ourselves looking for some salt on the table, something it seems we shouldn't be needing for such a dish. While I was stoked to get natto (a rarity in PDX), it wasn't anything to write home from Beaverton about. For the main, I scored the Kakuni Ramen and my associate the Chashyu Ramen. They seemed to be identical, but the Kakuni Ramen had added stewed pork belly. The broth was a cloudy, salty, rich, savory pork broth (shoyu is available as well on the Chashyu) over a pile of very well-made ramen noodles, some roast pork, some stewed pork belly, seaweed, pickled ginger, and green onion, and was served with a bowl of fresh garlic and sesame. The flavor of the pork belly is downright amazing, and while overwhelming in it's richness, it's a delight for the palate. Succulent, scrumptious, savory... the s-adjectives abound. Regardless, it was super soup (souper?). While not the best ramen I've ever had, it's by far the best I've had in Portland... as well it should be for $11 in a hole-in-the-wall out in Beaverton. The rest of the fairly large menu offers numerous grilled, stir-fried and souped up options, but really from what I've read and heard and tried, I think the main goal of a trip to Yuzu is to try the ramen, which is quite awesome. Add in some shochu (a nice extensive list), sake (again, great list) or Japanese beer, and you have yourself a quality meal. Were it not for the misses on the apps, this would easily be 5-stars... and maybe after I've had a few more bowls of this fantastic ramen, it will be. It really kills me to give a decent place two stars, but we'll have to chalk this one up to a public service announcement. Before I go any further, though, I'd like to save most of you the trouble of reading what will surely be an involved review of limited use to most people. A screening is in order! Have you eaten a lot of Japanese food IN JAPAN? Do you have a CRYSTAL CLEAR idea of what to expect from Japanese cuisine? Are you looking for Japanese food that does NOT revolve around sushi? Have you eaten at MANY izakayas? Do you already have a LONG MENTAL LIST OF DISHES that you're hoping to find at this restaurant? If you answered "no" to any of these questions, you'll probably get a lot more use out of other reviews. If you answered yes to most all of them, then rejoice! You have located the review that will address your most burning questions! For those of you still with me, allow me to explain why Yuzu has so far been the greatest disappointment I've encountered in Portland. It is not a bad restaurant; it even has the most comforting izakaya-like embrace available in the metro area. Its authenticity is not in question. You may find a few favorites here and you may even genuinely enjoy them. But you will leave with the same nagging natsukashii kimochi that you had when you arrived. Yuzu is unfortunately not what you're fervently hoping it will be. It is lacking the atmosphere of a real izakaya, and there is not the same opportunity for your party to have privacy. For me, this is no big deal, but I could see how it might be important to you. If you're familiar with small izakayas, then you already know you'll probably need a reservation here even on a weeknight. You'll also be aware that plates are generally tapas-style portions and that a good appetite will cost you about $20 a head. The service is generally what you'd expect, and you be overjoyed to receive your beer poured with abundant head if that's your freaky-teaky thing. (Other booze options are fairly limited.) The big kicker for me is the food itself -- particularly the lack of dishes I grew to consider staples. You want gobo? Too bad. Renkon nikku? Sorry. Bacon-aspara? Screw you, buddy. Love those shiso-wrapped, tempura battered chicken-stuffed maki? Yeah, no dice. If you have a hankering for truly succulent tori negi, well... they have that, but it's loveless and sad. I couldn't even get agedashi tofu (!!!). The okonomiyaki is certainly not the way you like it, and the yakisoba tastes sterile and packaged. In fact, most of the food here does. Think pickles that have lived a long, fruitful life in a jar. Some of it is probably prepared fresh, but it really tastes like it spent a lot of time in a box flying over the Pacific. And while you can't fault the place for that since we're not in Japan, it does mean that you will not get the fix you're looking to get. I could continue with a pretty long list of things you might expect at any izakaya that are NOT served here, but it would pain us both and bore the people who ignored the screening questions and kept reading. Suffice it to say that Yuzu is probably the best and most authentic izakaya-style Japanese joint in Portland. And if you're looking to soothe a well-informed nostalgic craving for Japan, that is a depressing thing indeed. read more

Move over Biwa, there's a new Stanley T favorite ramen in town. Well, one town over anyway. We found Yuzu last evening. "Found" is the operative word here - it ain't easy. For one thing, the map that comes up on Yelp is off by 1/4 mile or so. I called from the exact spot marked on that map and a very helpful young lady gave me directions. Even when you get in the right strip mall it's still not easy. All of the other businesses in the mall have large, brightly lit signs while Yuzu has a little white paint name stencilled on their glass door. Find them though - it's worth it. Others have described Yuzu as a hole in the wall place. Accurate I guess, but there's nothing the least bit unpleasant about the space. Our server (the same young lady who rescued me when I was lost) could not have been more delightful. We started with a couple of Asahi pints then a lovely Caesar salad with a miso-based dressing. We both ordered the Kakuni Ramen and were both quickly transported to culinary Heaven. I admit that $11 seems like a lot to pay for a bowl of noodles, but I'd say it's well worth it here. Yeah, I've eaten there one time. I went on a Tuesday. No one was there except one table. That one table got great service. We did not. We ordered the house ramen, the same thing as the other table. Ours was missing half the ingredients an hour later. Still, I obeyed the majority of reviews on Yelp, despite the few that said this place was racist and rude. I went at 6 p.m. on a Thursday night. They told me the restaurant was booked until closing. The next day I called for reservations. They told me they do not take reservations. In one last ditch effort, I showed up at 6 p.m. on the next Friday. They said they had filled their reservations. I would not give this place my business. Honestly, the customer service is out of the 20th century. I've lived abroad for several years and I've also lived near little Tokyo in L.A. I've eaten at P.F. Chang's. All places are more notable. Their ramen is not amazing. It's average at best. It just has a ton of salt and MSG. That's why it tastes good to most people. If you want a good family owned restaurant that appreciates you, go to Du Ku Bee a few blocks down. They have authentic amazing Korean food and excellent customer service. so...I'm as picky about Japanese food as New Yorkers for their thin pizza and any New Orleans natives to their home cooking/bbq/pretty much anything actually. I've been battling a cold/fever with no letting up, my boy suggested we go get some soup and came up with this brilliant idea. I mustered enough energy to get dressed. I walked in and all those lovely memories of childhood came flooding back . Even the music is like old pop from when i was a kid, it made me home sick and hungry. edamame, oshinko, agedashidofu, yaki onigiri and two things of ramen, we got the kakuni and the chashu. First of all, I have no idea why yaki onigiri is so unusual, we bbq rice every summer on the grill. bbq rice balls? mochilon! it's fab. and tasty. Their pickles were nom, and their agedashi tofu was perfect. such a treat. to the ramen - should have gotten 2 kakuni. I was jealously eyeing my boys bowl and that lovely pork belly floating it's identical except the pork belly of course. do not discard the fatty layer it tastes incredibly good. soooo good. That cloudy broth was just dreamy - you're left in a sweet bath of steam and chewy noodles and nom nom noming and silence while you slurp and savor and ahhh at the end. besides hitting the spot, it totally kicked my colds butt. During my short visit in Portland, I have tried a lot of awesome restaurants and food carts, but this restaurant along with the Nong's Khao Man Gai food cart were the best Asian food I have had during my stay. The restaurant was very difficult to find. It is tucked into the little corner of the plaza. If you see the UPS and the Cricket store, you are at the right place. Yuzu is right opposite to the Petco from across the street. My friend and I arrived 20 minutes before it open, so we waited outside till the clock reached 18:00. For whatever reason, the store front remained dark even after the clock said 18:08. As I was becoming hungrier and hungrier, I grew impatient and decided to try opening the door. Ta-Da! The door was open and they were open for business... It was just that they have their windows/door tinted, so the store front always looks dark...Sneaky sneaky Yuzu ._." We both ordered the Kakuni Ramen. BEST KAKUNI EVER! The braised pork belly was extremely tender as if it would melt the minute you put it in your mouth. The kakuni was crazily crazily tasty. The soup base was also made perfectly, the flavor was not too strong nor was it fatty. It was just about right. The ramen noodles is the only blemish in an otherwise perfect Ramen. Personally, I think the noodles lack a bouncy texture to them and that they were made a little too thin. (Or perhaps, straight ramen noodles are just not my cup of tea.) Despite the info here, it is DINE IN ONLY! DIsappointed that I couldn't have an experience at Yuzu, based on the others' reviews here. I'm new to the area, and Yelped to find the best Japanese in Beaverton. While they may serve great food, their business sense is lacking. A. NO TAKE-OUT. B. NO WEBSITE. C. NO BUSINESS SIGNAGE. I looked for a website to check out their menu. Doesn't exist. I called their business phone 3 times with no answer and no message. I drove around for 45 min, looking for it (including being in their parking lot 4 times. There are several small restaurants in a series of strip malls). No addresses on the doorfronts. No sign above their restaurant, just their name printed in 6" letters on the door, located in the corner of the strip mall. Walked in & asked to see a menu for take-out to be informed that they only serve dine-in. By the time I went to the next spot on my list, I was pissed at Yuzu and I hadn't even eaten there! read more
