Best ramen in Portland, no question. This is where you go when you want the good stuff. Get the Kakuni ramen (a couple dollars more than the others, but worth every penny) and if you're extra hungry get a side of the gyoza, they hand make them and they are delicious! I've been coming here for years and have never once had anything less than a stellar meal. It can get busy but I always sit at the counter so that doesn't usually effect me. The staff is nice, the place is clean and looks nice, I kinda miss their wood plank menu on the wall. It gave it a fun authentic touch. DISCLAIMER: Having never worked at an Izakaya in Japan during the 90's kind of makes me an expert on pretty much everything except for knowing what exactly an Izakaya is. I did however work as ferry boat pilot on the Dead Sea so I can tell you with certainty that the Dead Sea has nothing at all to do with Yuzu nor with their fine Japanese cuisine. With that being said I feel so naive for falling for Yuzu. I mean they actually fooled me into enjoying their Kakuni Ramen so much I actually believed that it was the most satisfying meal of my adult life. Honestly I don't know how I could have enjoyed the bright, savory and creamy broth, the melt in your mouth cubes of sweet sweet tender pork and the vast range of flavors and textures of ginger mushroom and scallions with a bit of aosa seaweed all ladled over delicious tender & slightly chewy Ramen noodles. I must be such a sucker to have thought that what I was eating was so Fantastically Delicious! My first bowl of ramen was during my visit in Tokyo, Japan five years ago & I was hooked from that moment on. It wasn't until I moved to Portland, over a year later, when I got my second fix. After a tireless, ongoing search I finally found & have determined Yuzu serves the best ramen in Portland. Most reviews rave & insist on ordering the Kakuni ramen. Because I'm not fond of pork belly, I steer away from it & order the Tonkotsu ramen. It's just as delicious with leaner roast pork rather than the soft, fatty pork belly. If texture is an issue, which it is for me, than Tonkotsu may be the better option for you as well. The cloudy, white colored pork bone broth is savory & filled with immense flavor while the noodles are cooked perfectly. The bowl looks small but the portions are far from it. The hot dish appetizer of bok choy is good but why must you cut off the leaves, Yuzu? That's the best part about bok choy. It was still tasty but it would've been more succulent if the leaves hadn't been removed. Another hot dish appetizer to try is the agedashi tofu. It's several large chunks of lightly fried tofu bathed in a broth much like soy sauce but lighter in flavor & less salty. A sprinkle of diced, green chives top it off should one desire more flavors in their bite. For everyone out there, especially Dorene S., Yuzu does accept reservations as well as walk-ins. They open at 6:00pm but fill up very quickly due to its small sized venue & because of this reservations are recommended. If you call before or after business hours then leave a message to reserve your spot. They will return your call just an hour or so before opening & I've never had any problems with it. Yuzu is located in a strip mall on the opposite end of Best Teriyaki. The only signage for it is four alpha stickers spelling out YUZU on the glass door. Not very obvious if you're driving by. The service has always been from the same friendly & very pleasant asian woman. OMG best ramen place in my area. So authentic. I've been many times, and on Tuesday I decided to introduce two friends to the restaurant. They couldn't find it because there is no sign above the restaurant, just the words 'YUZU' in beige, on a tan door. Haha quite the camouflage. The food is delicious. Definitely get the pork katsu age. SOOO GOOD. The pork had mint stuffed into the middle then battered and fried with a vinagrette sauce on the side. I get this every single time. Great dish to share. Of course we all got ramen. Shoyu was delicious. And my favorite the Pork Bone Ramen, which came with ground garlic and toasted sesame seeds to put into the soup as you please. Thursday night, 6:30, and I'm flying solo this evening with Wife N and the kids occupied with other engagements. Heading home from a long day of work in Tualatin out to Forest Grove, hunger reared its head and I decided to head off onto Canyon Road in search of noms. At about the second light it occurred to me: I've been wanting to try Yuzu for so long now with their brothy sirene call of Kakuni Ramen. I'm alone, might be able to squeeze in the door--why not give it a crack? Sure enough, there was one seat available at the bar and I was seated promptly. Seating note: during my visit, which was near the door, I heard them tell no less than five couples that there would be a minimum 30-60 minute wait for a table and one party of four was quoted 90 minutes. Reservations are virtually mandatory if you're two or more, and they only sporadically answer the phones after 6:00pm (opening time)--so you may need to call several days in advance and be persistent. A seat in Yuzu is a "prime spot" in Beaverton, and getting in has its challenges. It's worth it. I ordered the house special Ramen (Kakuni) and their Saba appetizer (eight slices of wonderfully-marinated sashimi mackerel). I can't ever resist trying saba--it's one of my favorite sushi fish and it is difficult to prepare properly and readily displays its freshness--or lack thereof. Thankfully, Yuzu's was wonderfully fresh, skillfully marinated and beautifully sliced. It came with a side of the best wasabi I've ever had. It is clear that Yuzu's wasabi is the real stuff--grated horseradish--not the water-added-green-dyed-powdered-mix that is provided at virtually all other sushi places. This wasabi was much paler in color, and had a complex, full flavor, and was not explosively spicy---it's what horseradish should be, an additive to enhance the flavor of the fish, not steal the show by masking all the other flavors. I caught myself just enjoying the remaining wasabi when I'd finished off the mackerel--it was that good. After a brief wait, the large bowl of Kakuni Ramen arrived. I took that first deep inhale of the steam and....oh.... heaven in a bowl awaits. Theirs includes some wonderful, fatty, incredibly tender chunks of pork belly. It literally had that "dissolve in your mouth" tenderness and was wonderfully flavorful. I added a bit of Layu oil (Rayu, chili oil) to the broth (which was just fine as served but I like to kick it up a notch) and also added the provided small dish of grated garlic and sesame seeds. Excellent. The noodles were great in my bowl. Best bowl of ramen I've ever had, and well worth the $13. Service was relaxed. I suspect Yuzu is a place where, once you get in, you are intended to hang around a while, go through some courses, sake or beer, an appetizer or two, main dish, and then finishing dishes. Just like the wait for a reservation or a prized seat, once in, food is delivered in a slow, methodical, relaxed manner. This is not a place to hit if you have a movie in an hour and want a quick something. My saba and ramen took 60 minutes total. And I enjoyed every one of them. read more

Yuzu's broth is truly sublime. Tampopo style. While other neo-noodle spots in town are about the garnishes: corn, bamboo shoots, greens and more, Yuzu keeps it simple with a focus on the broth. They also are the quintessential small Japanese eatery, greeting, wabisabi, reasonably priced and with a focus on the customer experience. Their karaage is worth a taste - it is unadorned, with a slight natural bitterness, very solid. The broth is a beautiful cloud color. The noodles were done just right, toothsome. Nothing special about the egg which is an option. I would say the music was a little odd, 80-90s pop. But that goes with the individuality of the spot. I really wish Yuzu had delicious noodles in their ramen. Their porky powers would pretty much be unstoppable at that point and they could go for total world domination. Wait...maybe that is why they insist on the unremarkable noodles. I kid you not about this world domination though. The pork broth, pork slices, and stewed pork meat are so incredibly life changing that your world will never look the same after you experience it. Secret nano-mind-control-devices in it? Maybe! After reading a ROTD about this place I was seriously jonesing for Ramen (although I had a small little dinner already).Thanks Yelp! We arrived here around 7.30pm and waited for a table roughly 15 to 20 minutes (Thursday night). You can always expect a line here as this place is pretty small (might also feel cramped if you're bigger). We sat down at the bar/open kitchen and other customers always bumped into my back when passing through. Also bring some patience if you have a party over 4, the space layout is challenging putting tables/booths together. Appetizer-wise, the Fried Chicken Karaage was tender and juicy, although could have used a little more crispiness on the outside. The Kobe Menchi Katsu on the other hand, absolutely bomb: super-flavorful frikadellers coated in a slight brittle mix of eggs, flour and bread crumbs. I've ordered Tonkotsu Ramen, the thin noodles were perfectly firm to the bite and a nice balance to the thick Tonkotsu broth. I came here to get some ramen and I was not at all disappointed. The Kakuni Ramen comes with generous bits of sweet stewed pork soaked in a pork and noodle broth and it was served in a large sturdy bowl. I suggest not coming here unless you have an empty stomach because there is more than enough food to fill you up in just one bowl of ramen. These people do not do "to-go-containers" with their ramen, so if you can't finish a bowl right then and there you will ultimately have to feel the guilt and regret of abandoning a delicious meal. Came here after over 5 months of hearing about it with some pretty high expectations...can't say I left disappointed. First of all, first thing I noticed when I walked in was the 15+ Japanese men dining in a large group. The pork belly in the Kakuni ramen was braised and actually a bit sweet to counter the salt in the pork broth. Really delicious contrast. We also ordered Mr. Nakano's sausages and although the sausages were good (a richer, deeper flavor than American hot dogs), I think their oil temp was not high enough since the oil seeped through the panko breading, which basically made it more oily than I would have liked. Now, I've been to Daikokuya in LA's Little Tokyo and that was the best ramen EVAAAR, but this place is really damn good, all things considered.. it is Oregon afterall =P. I'm kind of in love with ramen - and this place solidified it for me. After reading some reviews, I knew I had to for sure make a reservation. Heads up: make one BEFORE coming. I gave them a call around 2ish or so and left my name, number, when I needed to come in, and how many people I was bringing to dinner. By 5, they confirmed my reservation, and we were on our way! The place itself is hidden - basically, it's located right across the Petco. No big sign, just YUZU on the front of the door, literally right beside Dede's. It promptly opens at 6, and by 6:30 it's filled - so make your reservations and try not to walk in, unless you sit at the bar. On to the food: the fried chicken is AMAZING. Squid is delicious. And the ramen - well, I got the signature ramen which has the pork belly and oh my. It was just what I wanted and needed in life. The noodles were soft and tasty, and the broth was SO GOOD! Turn over rye increased since the business changed it's business hour to close by 10 pm. I've had few cases where waiting time was 30 min to even hour, or turned away as older Asian population customers had tendency to sit and drink for while as after business social gathering. Now younger western customers eat and go, so atmosphere has changed a bit. I feel like saltiness of ramen has been reduced as well, as customers who are heavy drinker/smoker needs stronger flavoring. Overall, I'm glad I returned to experience better food and atmosphere. There's diversity in customer base and I imagine all the positive reviews helped bring in wide range of people. It's small so only about 40 can be seated, but I enjoy the close proximity. Wall has nice brown paint and it less cluttered now. Probably the best place for a real bowl of ramen in the state of Oregon, it reminds me of ramen joints in LA or Honolulu. We wanted to hit up this place on Sunday night but to disappointment they were closed. So after waiting 5 days, I finally got my ramen fix. When we got there, the place was already packed full of customers, but our wait was only 10 mins. What we ordered: - ribeye wrapped in leaf - agadashi tofu - kakuni ramen - shoyu ramen The Kakuni ramen was the best. The agadashi tofu was worth trying, but I could have lived without the rest. Only complaint from me is the price. It is a bit pricey side for ramen but it's okay I guess for a great bowl of ramen. Yuzu is a citrus fruit often used in many dishes and drinks. I don't quite know what the correlation between the fruit and restaurant is because I didn't see anything with Yuzu. Whatever, this doesn't stop me from having my bowl of ramen. I've yet to find a ramen joint in Oregon that tops the ones in California. I'm praying this is it. Tonkotsu Ramen please. And add a soft boiled egg. Let me also have the seaweed onigiri. Onigiri (4/5): Rice was seasoned and cooked well. The seaweed filling was marinated well. Minus 1 point for the actual seaweed wrapper as it was kinda soggy and not close to crunchy. Tonkotsu Ramen (3.5/5): Thin noodles (Not my thing, but I won't dock off points). Despite the thin noodles, it was too well cooked. The broth had a salty profile and lacked the fattiness/creaminess that tonkotsu usually has. I can't say much for the toppings as there isn't much. The winner of the bowl was that soft boiled egg though. Golden runny egg at its finest :) Yuzu doesn't make it to my top list, but it does create a warm and homely environment especially if I'm craving for ramen. read more

This is it! I found it. Please note, I am not an expert in Japanese Ramen soup, but I do know what I like. My favorite ramen in the USA is at Ippudo NY, and I have been trying to find ramen here in the Portland area that is comparable. Yuzu might not be as good as Ippudo, but it's damn good and certainly will tide me over until I return to NYC. I love the rich, creamy-white pork broth with tender, melt-in-your-mouth kakuni (braised pork belly). They included a thin slice of roasted pork in the bowl as well; very nice. The noodles, though not house-made, were tasty with a nice toothy bite. The broth was delicious. Drop in the pureed garlic and sesame seeds garnish into the broth, mix up and enjoy. I'll definitely be going back, and though I would love to try their other soups (soy broth based), I'm going to have a hard time NOT ordering the Kakuni Ramen everytime. So that you understand which Portland restaurants I'm comparing to, I've tried Wafu, Biwa, Mirakutei and Miho. One of the best authentic Japanese restaurants in the area with great food and service. Personal favorite is the Japanese Caesars Salad with daikon slices and crispy Gobo roots. Other food is good as well but be aware the serving size is Japanese size - smaller than normal US serving size, which should be good for you right? ;) Their ale is also very nice and smooth. First off, this tiny place is very well-hidden. Wedged in the corner of a small outlet, there is no signage aside from the small pale plastic hanging from their front door. I went at lunch hour, around 12pm. People hear but not packed. They told me lunch hour is good time. They also purposely don't have big sign on roof. So it's hard to find. The staff is amazing and very helpful. She helped me choose great food. I got the karaage was excellent, best in the city among ramen places. Yummy dark meat and they didn't over cook. Very juicy. I followed up with the pork belly ramen. The broth was smooth and milky, spiced perfectly. The noodle was a bit under cooked, maybe another 1 min would help. I like a tiny bit softer. I do think they should have more noodles given the price. Finally, it would be nice if it was brighter. The entire places is dark and a bit gloomy. I will start off by saying that this restaurant is not easy to find. It is totally worth the effort though. Use the Yelp photos to help you find it. The restaurant almost looks like part of the bar that is next to it from the parking lot. The only sign for the restaurant is the small gold lettering on the door. The ramen at this restaurant was amazing. It is probably the best ramen I have ever had, and I have eaten ramen in Japan. It is Kyushu style ramen, which is the birthplace of this dish. The region is very well known for it. The broth is the perfect mix, flavorful, but not too salty, rich, but not too fatty. The pieces of pork in the soup are amazing. A hidden gem. Literally the most discretely placed signage. Yet once you step thru the door, you see a comfortable but unassuming establishment. We ordered shoyu ramen which came with pork slices, egg, chewy curly noodles. Good deal at 9.50. and we also got the special tonkatsu ramen, pork slices and pork belly chunks, straight thinner noodles and pickled ginger, great deal at 11.50. it was fun to see such variety, and both tasted great. The fried sausages tasted like little smokies with panko breading. Not something I'd get again. I'm giving them 5 stars because they nailed ramen, which is the main reason you are reading this review. If you are really hungry, you can always upgrade with extra noodles, but I found it to be about right. I look forward to another visit! read more

I ordered delivery from them and was very disappointed. The Misu Ramen and the Curry Ramen lacked flavor. The Mr. Nakano's Fried Sausage was terrible, it tasted like fried rubber. The only item I ordered that tasted good was the Kimchi Harumaki. At least the delivery was fast and the food was hot when it was delivered. I definitely feel like my money was wasted here. Came here on a whim.. Bf started driving towards Beaverton knowing there's good food there and I found this place on tripadvisor I am so happy I found this place. We got the whole grilled squid, waygu beef, kakuni ramen, and another pork ramen I forgot the name of. I can happily say I really liked everything, flavor wise no complaints. The meat in both ramens was marinated and the broth was really good. My only complaint here is toppings.. The kakuni only comes with seaweed, the pork, and bamboo shoots. I added an egg but there were no other options for adding more fresh vegetables. I would've loved some Napa cabbage or another veggie, but either way I'm definetely coming back here. read more

I have been here three times and I am definitely going to turn this into a weekly haunt. The staff is welcoming and friendly, and the menu is the perfect size and filled with unique dishes that you won't see in most Japanese restaurants. Plus, they have Japanese pudding (プリン), which I've been having a hard time tracking down, even in Japanese grocery stores! The kakuni ramen has some of the most delicious melt-in-your-mouth pork I have ever eaten. Their fried dishes are perfectly crispy and I love their sake selection.
