Good authentic Japanese izakaya. Small plates so we tried several different menu items with Asahi draft beers. They serve the dishes as they become ready which is a typical Japanese style, instead of bringing everything at the same time. It would have gotten a 4 star but I just didn't get enough out of it. Came here because a friend of mine told us that it was the best ramen in town. I do sure love me some ramen! So we went to the place and it is kind of hard to find. They do not have a sign up. You'll have to find them by looking at the windows. Anyways, food was GREAT! I had the ramen with pork belly. This is, hands down, my favorite Japanese restaurant. It's conveniently located close to the Beaverton Transit Center, but it's hidden away in the corner of a small shopping center. No big, flashy sign to advertise it or anything. It's a small place, a little sketchy from the outside, but actually quite nice once you walk in. I usually come here for dinner, and the place is usually quite busy. If you come with a large group, be prepared to wait a little while for a table. The hostess will take your phone number and call you when a table is ready for you, which is awesome. It can get a little loud in here due to the small space and a lot of people talking at once, so if you're looking for a nice, quiet atmosphere, this may not be the place for you. But trust me, the food makes it totally worth it. The menu has quite a lot to offer, and has some very interesting items. A few plates I like are the Kimchi Harumaki (kimchi and bbq pork with cheese in an egg roll type of thing), Tamago Korroke (basically a croquette with an amazing sauce on the side), and the Tori No Karaage (boneless fried chicken-- sounds boring, but it is absolutely amazing). And at the back of the menu, you'll find a list of noodle dishes, including all of their delicious ramen choices. The Kakuni Ramen is what they're most known for, and it is extremely delicious. The pork belly just melts in your mouth, the broth is incredible, and the noodles are perfection. But my personal favorite ramen is the Curry Ramen. This one is apparently only on the lunch menu, but they will still happily make it for you at dinner time if you ask for it. It combines two of my very favorite things-- curry and ramen-- and is amazing. I always ask for a boiled egg with it; it's a slight upcharge, but worth the price. My sister and I had a wonderful time at Yuzu last weekend! We ordered the Gyoza for an appetizer. It was the perfect start to the meal, satisfying yet light, and just the right amount for two people to split. Then, we each ordered a bowl of ramen to cure the rainy Saturday blues. I got the Shoyu ramen and it was actually my first time eating ramen that didn't come from the package! Delicious. Great balance of meatiness from the pork, saltiness from the seaweed, slurpiness from the noodles, and richness in the broth. And there was a hard boiled egg on top which always makes things better. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Our food came to us quickly. The environment of the restaurant was pleasant. If I had to give one criticism, it would be that the place is a little difficult to find! It is in a strip mall and there is no sign above the restaurant that you can see from the parking lot. A hidden gem! Quite literally...hahaha. The entry is a bit hard to find but trust your GPS, you are in the right spot. Just keep looking... After you find the entry, you can expect to wait for a table, however it will all be worth it in the end. Also, there is a TJmaxx nearby so you can kill time if needed..hahaha. This is so far my favorite Ramen place. The tonkotsu is soooo good. The chashu is actually a piece of lean pork, which I love because I do not like fatty pork belly. YUZU: A BITTER JAPANESE CITRUS A BITTER EXPERIENCE I have heard great things about this place from both friends and family members. So I will start out saying that I have never heard from friends or family about having an experience like this. We went on a Friday night which is not the best time to try a hole in the wall, we understood it would be busy. We were greeted, cool-ly, by the staff and she said they were busy but agreed to take our number and said nothing else about it. They did not take a name. We saw her greet Japanese that came in behind us with enthusiasm. We have lived in Japan and were very excited to have tonkotsu for the first time after moving back to Oregon. We were hoping to celebrate my father-in-law's retirement here, so we were with my elder in-laws on a cool night. So we walked around the shopping center for about an hour, no problem we had a feeling it would be worth the wait. I stopped in to check with the staff after about an hour to see if I had given her the correct number, it was correct. At this point it appeared my number was next on the list. Eventually we were there for over an hour and a half, no call. A group of Japanese students told me they were waiting about an hour as we waited together and the Japanese students puffed cigs. (This too, was reminiscent of time in Japan) The group of students disappeared, and I assumed perhaps it was because there was another table, but the group of Japanese students had been seated while there was no space for us. I talked to one member of the staff who mentioned that the same woman I had checked in with TWICE about the number and our place on the list (for about 1hr45 minutes wait) and then proceeded to wait another 10 minutes for this woman to come over to check the list ofr the THIRD time. Our phone number was crossed off! She informed me that this could not possibly be my phone number, that it belonged to the group she had just seated... the students... all while they didn't seem to be using this phone number system at all. I don't want to read too much into racism or any other notion like that, but that is what it felt like. She gave a very hollow, casual "Sorry!" We lived in Japan for 3+ years and never saw this rude blase service from Japanese restaurants EVER. This place knows they have a monopoly on the market. I will now try NORANEKO in Portland before I will try to BE SEATED at this place again. Toshi's Ramen in Eugene also had a great atmosphere (but no tonkotsu :( ) Some groups that showed up had made reservations, it appeared even in the case of reservations that they have difficulty seating those with reservations on time. Bottom line: food must be great!?, staff needs to be friendlier to non-Japanese, a name system would be better for tracking groups for seating, cold non-izakaya atmosphere (go to Syun in Hillsboro for that, but again, no authentic tonkotsu like Yuzu is supposed to have), need bigger establishment? (unless, like I said, they want it to scream "Keep out!" , guard your place in line (don't expect them taking a phone number to lead to any actual calls, and don't assume that they will think you know your own phone number) read more

I finally got a round to trying Yuzu. I can honestly say that I don't know of another Izakaya in the Portland area. There is Syun in Hillsboro, but that's quite a trek. Yakuza is in the NE, but they are more of a modern fusion version of the Izakaya that you might be looking for. The food here is amazing. From my first trip, I can highly recommend the kasuzuke; not too sweet, and just a hint of miso if I'm not mistaken. The karaage was a fine example, and if you are feeling adventurous, you can try some of their marinated konnyaku. Overall this is a great place and not too expensive. I'm quite happy I've found a traditional izakaya that's not quite end-of-the-max-line. read more

I TAKE IT ALLLLL BACK! There is an izakaya that does decent, nay, *heavenly* ramen! Listen to your heart, listen to your fellow yelpers. Get the kakuni ramen. The pork belly, oh how it melts in your mouth but not in the porky broth. The noodles, oh how they chew just the right amount of chewy (though they could be a touch thicker). Split it along with some of their stellar small plates, including beef tongue and the yaki-onigiri, both authentic dishes you ain't gonna find many places 'round here. I love Wafu's ramen too, because its limited menu makes it more of a ramen shop with izakaya dishes. But I love Yuzu's ramen even more -- and this is a gen-u-ine izakaya. Too bad it's in the Beav. Like many others have said... not a lot of signage. They didn't seem to need it however. The place was packed when we arrived. A party of 12 people occupied a large portion of the restaurant but it only took 15 min or so to be seated. The restaurant itself along with the menu and staff are very out of place in Beaverton but I think that is the primary draw. The staff was really friendly and helpful and the service very prompt. I enjoyed the kakumi ramen. Not so much the ramen itself (it was ok) the broth and the perfectly seasoned meats were outstanding. read more

I absolutely love Yuzu, it is a very well hidden secret place that has amazing ramen. I don't think anyone ever finds Yuzu without someone telling them it is there as there is almost no signage and you can't see inside and I would never just open a random door. Once inside the decor is nice, the staff has always been friendly and helpful, not pushy and very good on refilling drinks. I go for the pork belly ramen, and every time it's astoundingly good. We've been here three times and love it! The first time we tried half of the available small plates, and each had a ramen. Everything was delicious, and the service was awesome even though they were busy. We've tried different ramens each time and enjoyed all of them. The Saturday menu is a little shorter, but still good. They also have a large sake selection. I don't know much about sake, but I have tried a different one each I've been and thought they were pretty tasty. They're usually pretty busy, so if you're not there right when they open you might have a bit of a wait, but table turnover is pretty quick. It's a small restaurant, but feels really comfortable. There was no big sign referencing the place in the plaza. I waited no more then 10 mins as there is limited spacing (on a Friday). There was only one server for the whole restaurant but she did an excellent job from taking our order, serving food, cleaning tables and being able to manage to serve all customers in a full house (She definitely deserves a pay raise in my book). I was really impressed with the quality of the taste of food and the time that it was served. Pricing was fair for what you pay for if you don't want a big portion. The noodles are al dente for my taste, but the broth is the star of the show anyways, so it's not a problem. The owner lady is very sweet. The only negative is that the restaurant is small and popular, so be prepared to wait or get there early. This is a tough review to write because I'm a solid 3.5 for Yuzu. BUT, I know ramen is hard to come by in the Portland area. We walked in on a blustery night and were quoted 45 minutes but were seated after 30. Waitress was very sweet, attentive and polite. Ordered the Kukani Ramen (tonkotsu broth with pork belly). Belly was the best part of the bowl as the broth was a bit flat/bland. Noodles had a nice texture, egg was perfectly soft boiled. Solid bowl of noodles though nothing that particularly stood out. I would say the noodles were a slight letdown relative to how good the other components were. While still delicious, I was looking for that springy, almost but not quite crunchy quality.. similar to al dente, but unique to alkaline ramen noodles. Yup, I am splitting hairs over a minor issue. We went to Yuza Saturday evening and it was pretty good. I am leaning towards three stars but since it is between 3 and 4 I am going with 4. The staff was very nice and quick with the water which I always appreciate. My special ramen with pork belly was really good. Full of flavor but the noodles seemed a little under cooked. Wife had another ramen but didn't like it. She said it tasted like pig soup. Granted she prefers vegetarian soups, or ones that are at least not all pig all the time. We also got a tofu appitizer that was bland and boring (it is tofu after all) and a grilled beef tongue plate that was killer. I would probably go back but wife won't. This place was fantastic. In a shopping center in Beaverton, if you don't look closely you'll miss it because there is no sign. This place is super tiny. I mean so small you have to walk sideways between tables. The staff is so friendly. We started with the pork belly and gyozas. Both were absolutely delicious! My husband and I both got the popular ramen which I can't remember name. It's the last one listed on lunch menu. It was fantastic! The broth was rich, fatty and flavorful. My mom had the miso ramen, which though good was a little on the bland side, unfortunately. She didn't eat much of it. I went to Yuzu for dinner with my cousins and we were extremely impressed with the level of service that the restaurant provided. They knew exactly what we were thinking before we even ordered (e.g. brought extra bowls and spoons so we could split ramen). Nice menu, wish it had pictures but staff was very knowledgable and food came out QUICK. We love the small plates - a bit on the smaller side in terms of portions, but everything is reasonably priced and unreasonably delicious, and it made us savor each bite. The most authentic ramen that the Portland Metro Area will ever have. Yes, this business lacks a website, a huge business sign, a take-out service, nor answers their phone. Regardless of what they lack for having such bad "business ethics," I'm confident that the quality of their service and food makes up for what they lack. The restaurant has very limited seating, so don't expect to fit a party of 30 in there. I had their tonkatsu ramen... The broth was very umami. Ramen noodles were cooked perfectly. I came back again and this time I had the shoyu ramen. I'm no ramen expertise but I can say that the both times that I've had ramen here, were indubitably fantastic. The egg was perfectly cooked medium. Don't knock this place if you haven't tried it. If you wanna try their food, go when it's not the crazy dinner rush. I had a very high hope on their ramen since my friend told me about it plus the reviews. I ordered the famous on Kakuni ramen(sorry if spelled wrong) the first two bite was okay but not super super awesome. This was not impressed me at all. After i eat the ramen for awhile i just noticed that the broth is very salty. I didn't finish it. I also order the kimchee rggroll appetizer, it was okay but i hardly feel that it had kimchee inside. I have been wanting ramen. Bookmarked three places in Yelp and decided on Yuzu. They opened at 12 today (Saturday) and we were there at 12:15 . . . and we waited maybe 20 minutes. We had the kanuki ramen, miso ramen, karaage, and tonkotsu ramen. All wonderful. Tonkotsu and kanuki came with sides of garlic and sesame seeds to top off the ramen. Noodles were perfectly firm. The karaage is salty in the best way. The chicken is deep fried with the skin. Definitely my style. But not my wife's so she left it on her plate and it disappeared. We sat at a bar that could seat 10. seating included five tables along a wall with a bench running the length and one booth. The space is tight but functional. The service is friendly. There is something just a little off about their work flow. We waited a while (maybe 10 minutes) to pay for our check and there were probably 6 or 7 parties waiting to get seated. I really like my pork belly with fat. Theirs was good. Flavorful. If it was perfect it might have been braised longer. I'll remember this place, but I'm going to try some others. read more
