One of the better ramen places I've tried so far. For $11, you get a kakuni ramen with char siu and pork belly already included. It doesn't cost you an arm or a leg to add meat to your noodle soup like some other places. Pork belly was flavorful and very tender. Just a heads up to ramen-seekers that the kakuni ramen came with thin straight noodles. It does state this on the menu but people may still expect the typical curlier and thicker noodles. I would have preferred the typical ramen noodles, but this wasn't a dealbreaker for me since the broth was so delicious! It had nice subtle ginger undertones in the broth. I was excited about the rice balls, which I have yet to find here in PDX. The rice balls were good but the salmon in the middle was a bit dry. The only complaint I have is that we found out at the very end after we divvied up what we owed onto our cards that the place only accepted a maximum of two cards for payment. Pretty LAME. I wish they would have just added the costs of the transactions into the meal prices. For folks who are coming here for the first time, It is pretty hard to find this place. It's pretty much a hole in the wall and their only signage is on their door in white paint. Don't expect to see this from the main road. It is located to the left of a store called Dede's. read more

The stars aligned, and after three years of wanting to eat at Yuzu, I am proud to say that I have finally sat at one of their tables and enjoyed their much raved-about food. As someone who spent two weeks in Japan and ate ramen quite a bit, Yuzu has the best ramen in town. The broth has a rich, meaty taste, and the pork in their soup is everything you dream of pork being. The ambiance is relaxing and casual, and the service is not bad either. The main focus is the food. This place is hidden a bit. At the strip mall, every store but theirs have a brightly lit sign. I've never had a dish here I didn't like. The Kakuni ramen here is #1 in Portland. My parents love getting the buta no kakuni and wafu salad (the crispy things on top with the Caesar dressing is amazing). Portions are small for the price, so we like to order a ramen to share along with the small dishes to fill us up. It's definitely not cheap. I would only go here on special occasions or for lunch. This by far has been one of the best Japanese Restaurants that I have visited in the area. It is super hard to find and the seating is definitely limited, but I am a super fan. We had ordered ramen and karaage chicken. It was cooked to perfection. I couldn't help but to eat every last noodle in my bowl and the chicken was one of the best that I have had in a long time. They also have dessert pudding from Mio's Delectables and my goodness the dessert was tasty! Because of limited seating, we opted to seat at the bar and that enabled us to get great service since the wait staff sees us right away. I was down in Oregon and I couldn't find anything good on Yelp then this little place popped up on my radar saying it was fairly close and the average rating for this place was pretty high. I thought, meh, why not? I like Kukai and Hokkaido Ramen enough in Seattle, this place should give them a run for their monies... right? First off, this place is VERY hidden. It's next to an Adult store with blacked-out windows and Yuzu doesn't even have a sign hanging above it's entrance... the place looked abandoned! Well, we walk in and see that the place is PACKED and there was a 20 minute wait. Why not? We'll wait for good food. I ordered the Mini-Katsu Don and was it delicious! It's a very wet Katsu Don with egg dripping everywhere in the bowl. Oh, and did I mention the "mini" part of it? Yeah, it was super small, even the waitress was like... are you sure you don't want anything else to go with it? So why the low rating? Here's why -- their protein for the ramen SUCKS. The pork here is comparable to the kind of stuff you would find at a supermarket, and I ain't talking about H-Mart. The broth was okay, but we didn't come down here for a cup of soup. read more

The best izakaya in PDX. Yes, you heard me. I'd even argue the best Japanese food in PDX, BUT those are strong words and I am noncommittal in general. They have rotating menus that never cease to amaze. This time I had the cow tongue (perfectly salted - I almost fought my buddy for the last piece), shiso-wrapped natto, miso black cod, shrimp-stuffed renkon, grilled squid, tonkatsu-don, and the shishito peppers. The flavored were banging, just banging. Everything was very well done. Service was good, not spectacular but good. No complaints. I think many of the criticisms about their service come from people who want the ultimate customer service we often get spoiled with, and forget that the servers are people too. This is not a standard American establishment and thank God! It's Japanese dagnabbit! Just chill out and enjoy! read more

This was my first time coming to Yuzu. We came for lunch on a weekday and there was no wait. The staff was very kind. While looking over the menu I had a few questions. I guess they could tell because they came right over and asked if I needed any help. We ordered the 2 different types of onigiri and the tonkatsu ramen. This was my first time having onigiri but it was delicious. The ramen broth had wonderful flavor and the noodles were tender, yet still had a bite to them. Yuzu is a little mom and pop place, with nothing you don't need. You actually have to be looking for this place to find it. The hunt is well worth the find. I came here with my friend and my brother to have some ramen. My brother seemed to really like the ramen, so I tagged along and tried. I'm so glad that I did. The ramen broth was perfect along with the noodles. The pieces of meat were also amazing and complementary with the whole dish. Great stuff. The waitress is the owner so what else would you expect than great service. It's just a hole in the wall, but it's an amazing one well worth looking for. Happy hunting! read more

I sort of have mixed feelings about Yuzu. First, I tried calling the restaurant multiple times and they didn't answer the phone. Second, the restaurant is in a strip mall with no signage and very hard to find. I told them that I had called multiple times, and no apologies just we don't answer the phone just leave a message. What's up with that? I have never heard of a restaurant that doesn't answer the phone? Also, the bathroom was dirty,and used as a storage room. The restaurant had an 80's retro feel to it with the music playing. Also, a very cramped place. I guess when your an excellent restaurant like Yuzu you don't have to answer the phone, and or have a sign so people can find the restaurant. Now, I will address the ramen it was quite excellent. I had the Kakuni ramen it was very flavorful,and they give you a big bowl. Although, I did think that the Kakuni ramen was a bit on the salty side. The potstickers were flavorful, and one can tell they are made with a lot of pride. With all the hype,and how great I heard yuzu I felt a bit disappointed. I thought it was very good, but not quite as good as the hype I had heard. I would definitely go back, although it was a bit crowded,cramped,and claustrophobic. A friend recommended I try out a hidden ramen spot in Beaverton. This place really is hidden, but if you look at a dark corner of the shopping plaza, you'll see this little shop. It was around 11 and the place was completely empty which was good because I was on a lunch break from work. The nice girl gave me some information on types of ramen they had. I went with Shouyu-cascu-men. It came out in a rather large bowl and smelled like heaven. There was a good bit of seaweed and fresh egg in this and a good amount of pork. I especially loved the broth! I really enjoy that they play Japanese music in the background and don't have any distracting tv's playing sports. It felt very authentic. So i went on vacation and had the so called best Ramen in Boston, MA as well as eating a yelp favorite Ippudo in NYC, but after spending over $20 bucks on a effing bowl at Ippudo, i came to the realization that this lil joint in the middle of Beaverton, Oregon is the best Ramen i have had so far. I didn't get to try all the places in NYC and Boston, but this Ippudo place had over 1000 yelp reviews, so needless to say, you are getting some fine Ramen for coming here. So where did Ippudo fail that Yuzu does so well? Its all in the meat! The meat at Ippudo was like eatting freaking jerky. I was chewing for days, while at Yuzu, you don't even need teeth. The meat and fat literally melt and slide down your throat. Both broths were comparable and my wife likes the noodles better at Ippudo. Any hoot, raising the stars for Yuzu since there Ramen is the clear winner. My only tip with Yuzu is the make a reservation far ahead and hope you get one otherwise its tough to get a meal here! read more

Cut very thin, so not as chewy as I've heard beef tongue can be, and so well-seasoned. Just a truly wonderful set of bites. Agh! The mackerel was heavenly, I mean, stop talking to your friend and take a moment to yourself kind of heavenly. Unreal. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on this menu. My friend parked right in front of the restaurant and I said, "Where is it?" Seriously, this place is a total kakure izakaya, and probably better off for it. If this place were in Japan it would still be on my Saturday night list. In Japan its ramen wouldn't be my favorite, but in Portland it gets five stars simply because it's REAL JAPANESE RAMEN! YESSSS! :D Where other restaurants seem to start with a can or powder of something American, Yuzu's broth is light but rich, pork-based, and tastes like the real thing. If you get the kakuni version, you get some chunks of perfectly-flavored pork--not too salty, but still lots of taste--that has been simmered until it's nice and soft, and served with plenty of melt-in-the-mouth fat still on it. Perhaps not what most Jack Sprat type Americans are looking for from dinner, but those in the know (wink wink) are probably already checking what time Yuzu opens. The hijiki salad was an awesome reminder of Japan too, but the serving was quite small. I could have finished it by myself but had to share. :( The mini katsu-don was perfectly fried, but we added some soy sauce to make the flavor a little more rich. Also fried was the pork hasami-age, which had some shiso (beefsteak) leaves magically inserted into a cutlet, fried, and then served up with a salted plum dressing. Oh, and we had the grilled eggplant as well. All in all I would have liked everything a little richer, but we can probably take care of that with a request next time. Just 2 bummers, and both to do with alcohol: One, why is shochu so expensive?? It's just glorified hooch, so it's really hard to justify paying $9-$15 per glass. Did they fly it over on business class? Give it private English lessons before it hit the shelf? Can anyone explain this to me? Two, when we ordered our 2nd pitcher there was enough foam to fill an entire glass of beer. Ahh, why can't we get the best of both worlds--perfect Japanese food AND a full serving of beer? Wow!! Talk about your hole in the wall. Yuzu is a typical Japanese Izakaya (or Japanese Tapas) style restaurant. Open only during the night time. This place has no visible signs from the street. It's located between a Korean Family restaurant and a Japanese/Korean Video Shop. It's a really small place operated by a husband and wife team and some kitchen staff. It has a counter seat for about 5 or 6 people and about 5 or 6 tables to seat up to 4 people each table. Service is a little slow but it's only because the wife is the only server. She is very attentative though. If you don't make reservations you will end up waiting a while for any seat to open up. I went there with no reservations and waited for 30 - 45 minutes. But WELL WORTH THE WAIT!!! Local Japanese people definitly come and eat here all the time. Most of the patrons were Japanese when I was there. I was suprised they even do take out. The food is Definitly Authentic Japanese. The Owner/Chef is in the back constantly prepping the food. They also have some interesting menu's named after some loyal local patrons. I heard some of the professional Japanese sports players come and eat here from Matsui to Ai Miyazato. Best of all it's not too pricy for it's quality. We ordered grilled squid, but came in fried version. They switched for us, but took extra 20 minutes for our dinner. The ramen was DeLiCiOuS!!!!! I would give food five star! They also have an open kitchen like they do in Japan which gives it a traditional and authentic feel. The service was good and the ramen took ~20 min to come out. I love this place. My wife lived in Japan for a while and claims it is as good or better than most of the stuff she ate while she was there. I am not a fan of ramen generally; I find it and most noodle dishes difficult to eat since I am an adult baby. I will make exceptions for Yuzu, however. No sign above the restaurant, just a stencil on the door letting you know you've made it to ramen mecca. Wait was around 15 mins, they called when our little table was ready. We got a pitcher of Japanese beer, two bowls of their speciality ramen, and some gyoza. Bill was around $50 for two people. Enjoyed the qualities most Yelpers have complained about. The need for a reservation: There was something attractive about the way business was conducted here. All it took was a conversation. Upon my arrival, during peak hours on a Friday night, and sans the recommended reservation, I was informed by the hostess/waitress/I read owner, that it would be about 20-30 minutes. Said I'd wait - and after a brief jaunt around the local shopping centers, I returned to an open seat, waiting for me. No annoying blinking/vibrating device, not even a list, just the memory of a verbal transaction and the honoring of one's word. Not the most economically viable way to go about things, but old-fashioned and charming if you will. The lack of signage: Yes, I missed it on my first pass, but kudos to them that they rely on their product and not some big flashy sign to attract customers. Yuzu was full throughout the night even though you can literally only see the sign from a certain angle! As for the food, itself - it was good. I went with the highly touted Kakuni Ramen and was pleased. All elements had a good taste, with the dish featuring noodles of solid consistency, tender pork that melted in the mouth and a broth that was light, and palatably smooth. Unfortunately, I didn't walk away that satisfied, but that's due to a personal trait of mine - i eat a lot - and ramen just never fills me up! I'm a harsh critic, and a place won't earn five stars from me unless it has that wow factor - part of the reason it's taken so long to go from consulting Yelp to Yelping.
