I wish I could give this place a better review.. the first time here during covid everything was amazing. We were seated right away and the servers were very attentive. The second time we tried dining in at 7pm they hit max capacity and was closing at 8pm, which we understood no worries. The third time we came at 6pm and I had just opened the door and the lady screamed we hit max capacity no more people. The lady had came out to wipe the doors and we asked if there was a waiting list we could put our name on she said "no ok leave" wait so if we wanted to eat here is it even possible? The food here is delicious! We ordered the curry rice, sake (grilled salmon) onigiri, karaage, and the kakuni ramen. I loved that the rice with the onigiri was salted and stuffed well. The ramen was light and refreshing. I enjoyed that it wasn't so enriched and overpowering with flavor. The karaage included the skin which was great but otherwise it was okay. The curry dish was good too, great porportions between the curey itself and the rice/meat. The outside could use more decorations or an easier indication that they're open other than their "YES WE'RE OPEN" sign. At night it's hars to tell of the sign is for next door or not. We were one of the only parties not speaking Japanese, and I usually feel that if you're speaking the language of the cuisine it's probably a pretty dang good place. We were not disappointed! This restaurant does not have a sign on the front so when you're looking for it, it is located to the left of Dede's. Maybe they didn't put a sign on purpose so you'd get hungry just looking for it! We got seated right away as we had a late dinner. We came at almost 9pm. The restaurant has an open concept so it's nice to see the owner making the orders. I enjoyed the beef tongue and gyoza! I recommend those for the small plates. The gyoza is cute and bite size. We also ordered the agadashi tofu and the grilled squid. I was not a fan of those 2. I ordered the Kakuni Ramen. I thought it was okay. I liked the pork belly. I did not like the noodles. I also tried my brother's noodles that had curly egg noodles and did not like those either. The broth wasn't too bad. The gyudon wasn't so bad, but the curry rice had THREE pieces of meat in it... the several carrots there weren't enough. It didn't make me full, and I'm not even that big of an eater. After a night filled with ice cream and donuts, I needed some sort of Asian cuisine fix. It was a pretty cold day so naturally, I wanted hot soup. Yuzu is a bit hard to find because their signage is practically made for ants so you will easily miss it. Just look for Dede's, it is to the left of them. Kakuni Ramen -- They have a healthy selection of options but I thought it be best to go with their signature. Their pork bone flavored soup had a lot of depth but the noodles were a bit of a disappointment. Not sure what kind they use but I didn't feel like it complemented the soup very well. Agedashi Tofu -- Lackluster. Either the tofu was previously frozen or just old but the crispy outter skin was soggy. Was a little bummed they didn't top it with bonito flakes. The best ramen placed I've tried in the Portland metro area, hands down. It feels like I'm back in Little Tokyo in LA! My friend and I came around 7pm. I think it was perfect timing, because it was right after the initial early dinner rush, and before the 7:30pm dinner rush. The lady was asking if we were already on a waiting list, and after a little deliberation, seated us at the bar. Lucky us! I was here on a ramen mission, but they have a few sobas that looked really appealing. Next time, next time. You get a little bowl of edamame to nibble on while you wait for your food, it was a nice touch! No charge for tea, awesome. I got the Cya-syu-men with the Ton Kotsu broth and switched the thin straight noodles for the thick curly noodles. The pork bone broth is perfect. The chashu pork was very tender, and it definitely came with more than 3 slices, so props to that. They give you sesame seeds and minced garlic on the side to add as you please. ALSO: as someone who doesn't like bean sprouts, the ramen did not come with any. Hooray! No need to pick around it. My friend got the Kakuni Ramen, which was also made with pork bone broth and had pork belly instead of chashu. After a taste-test with her consent, the broth was as equally delicious as the Ton Kotsu broth, and the pork belly just melted in your mouth - they must have been cooking it for a very long time. It's a very small Japanese restaurant that holds maybe about 6 groups of people if they're small groups. Has a nice atmosphere to it but feels a little bit crammed. The food was decent but it's not a place I would make a point of coming back to. Their food looks better than it tastes. There weren't any bad flavors or poorly prepared dishes but it just wasn't a big hit. But even so I would recommend the ramen because the noodles were good and out of all the dishes we ordered, that had the most flavor! I'm a HUGE fan of ramen and have been searching for my Portland-area go-to shop. I think Yuzu may be it, but I haven't scoped out all the ramen shops here yet. BUT, of the places I've tried here so far, Yuzu comes the closest to what I consider "the best." I tried to make a reservation for Yuzu but they aren't open during the day, so I called around 5:45 to see what was available that night; nothing, but I could take my chances with the counter seating. We got there at 6:15pm and the 4 counter seats were full. All the other tables were full or reserved but the waitress said we could have the next table that opened up, in about 30 minutes. So we waited, and watched scores of other groups appear and be turned away. Clearly this is a popular place! We finally got a seat and each tried a different dish. I had the Kakuni ramen - it was heavenly! It wasn't exactly like my favorite (Santouka in SJ), but it was fairly close. It was rich and flavorful, not overly salty for my palate and I enjoyed the pork slice. The pork belly was too fatty for me so I won't get that again, and the noodles were good. Thinner than in the Shouyu ramen that my son had. The shouyu ramen had curlier and thicker noodles than the Kakuni ramen - not sure which I liked better, but I did note the difference. Hubby had the Gyu Negima - thin sliced beef wrapped around green onions. Yum - this was delicious! Ambiance was great - very small, probably seats only about 20 or so. The service was great, although food didn't come out very quickly. I loved the decor, and I liked the ramen a lot. I will definitely be back, making reservations ahead of time. I have to deduct a star for not being open at lunch; it's easier for me to get out at lunchtime than dinnertime. read more

Very compact restaurant with a small sign on their door to signify their presence in a strip mall near the Beaverton Transit Center. They're very friendly, and looking around, a very cozy atmosphere with the workers and the other customers. I'm biased because I'm Japanese and my mother is a great cook, so beware! We got their shio jidori yaki and hot soba with daikon and nameko (type of mushroom). The soba was mediocre - their soup had too much soy sauce and too little dashi so it was salty. Very little daikon, and the nameko tasted slightly pungent like it was just sprinkled on top straight from the can. Their jidori chicken had very little to the dish, but also was a solid dish. Can't go wrong with jidori, as it is always tender and juicy. I tried my friends tonkotsu ramen broth which was good. Very good broth flavor and I see why it's popular there. However there was very little toppings - 1 slice of chyashu, a pinch of seaweed, 1 egg. Happy I got to cross this place off of my list, however it reinforces my lack of interest in eating Japanese outside of home. Yuzu is the best ramen I've had in the Portland area. Located in a nondescript strip mall in the middle of Beaverton, this place is easy to miss. However, once you step in through the entryway, you will be welcomed by an understated yet truly legit Japanese ramen experience. The service is impeccable, as the server is quick to serve a little edamame to snack on while you look through the menu. My cup of water was never empty as they came by pretty often to refill my drink. For appetizers I recommend the gyoza (aka potstickers). The process of making gyoza is deceptively hard to get to get right. A proper gyoza is boiled and then fried to the point where it's lightly browned. Most places will simply boil and/or deep fry the gyoza for the sake of expediency. Not only does Yuzu do the gyoza the right way, they also do the dipping sauce the right way too. Sometimes the dipping sauce is pure soy sauce, which is too salty. Sometimes they put in too much rice vinegar, which then makes it too acidly. Again yuzu does this just right with the perfect mix to compliment the gyoza. As for the ramen itself, you can't really go wrong with any of the dishes. The broths are all very flavorful and they are very generous with the pork slices. I would recommend the shoryu (soy based) or the tonkotsu (pork broth). In short, if you're in a mood for serious ramen, then yuzu is definitely worth the trip! read more

I've been coming to Yuzu from time to time for the last 6 years, almost always for the signature ramen (which, 6 years ago, was probably the best in town; now... it's up there but it's not the best anymore). But this time, I wanted to try something else. I came by myself on a Monday, around 8:30pm. The place was still quite busy - all the tables were taken, but plenty of bar seating. I ordered the reba nira itame (garlic chives, bean sprouts, and liver stir fry) and the mini katsu-don. The cooking took a while (maybe 15 minutes?); the kitchen was still quite busy. But as soon as the stir fry came out, it was obvious that it was worth the wait: the sprouts were still crunchy, the chives just wilted enough, great sear and caramelization of the soy sauce (great wok hei); the only downside is that the liver was just slightly overcooked, but liver is almost impossible to cook right anyway. While I paced myself with the stir fry, the katsu-don came out a few minutes later: it was so... homely? Can something you've never had be a comfort food? Sweet and savory, lightly crunchy onions, crispy (but slightly moistened and softened) tonkatsu, soft poached eggs, a few strands of chives. Warm and comforting. Overall impressions: Great service, though food takes a while to come out. Both items I tried this time were excellent, though I feel that their ramen is falling behind in comparison with the rest of Portland. Still, a hidden gem of an izakaya - if you can ever find the entrance! (Hint: Google Maps will take you to the right place; it's in the corner with a small "YUZU" sign on the door.) read more

I guess you sort of have to know it's there. It was small but packed, so people obviously know it's there. And for good reason, this is probably the best ramen that we have had in the Beaverton area. I got their signature Ramen. The broth was cloudy and beautiful. The pork that I think was made in a marinated miso mixture was delicious. The noodles were very good also. There were also several pieces of good but not overwhelmingly strong Pickled ginger that gave the broth a very nice flavor, and tasted good in their own right. This place has pretty decent ramen and service. My boyfriend and I have eaten at many ramen shops in the Portland/Beaverton area and this place was a lot better than we were expecting it to be. We both ordered the kakuni ramen which we both enjoyed. The noodles were soft and the broth was not too salty. We both drank the broth clean! The pork meat they use here is not fatty, which is a plus for me since I do not like the fatty pieces. The chicken karaage pieces were smaller than we are used to seeing, but they were juicy and deliciously seasoned. I docked one star because our ramen did not come with egg. All of the ramen shops we have been to include egg in their ramen. Here, you have to pay extra to get it as an add-on. I took off another star because of how they packaged my to-go order. I ordered a vegetarian ramen for to-go and the waitress packaged the noodles and soup together. A subtle little gem near the Cedar Hills area. It's definitely not eye-popping from the outside but being inside is a different story. I'm definitely a fan of the restaurants that seem sort of hidden or almost like a scary place to eat because they always have something special or good. This place is no exception and compliments that perfectly. Price: Pricey for sure because the portions you get are generally smaller and not worth in terms of size/filling. Some of these dishes are exceptionally small and could barely even be called an appetizer but hover around the 10-20 dollar range. However, the quality of the food is different and I'll explain in the food section shortly. Service: Excellent! All the waitresses were super nice and attentive and were ALWAYS willing to listen to us. Very eager and encouraging to whatever questions we had about their big menu and gave us their own input/opinions on certain dishes which we always appreciate. Food: So good. There's so many options to choose from and I unfortunately couldn't take pictures of ALL the dishes we ate (my parents started eating before I took my phone camera out). All of them are good and offer a unique taste combination of flavor to understand that this is from Yuzu. Anytime a restaurant serves a memorable dish or dishes automatically receives high praise from me. I would definitely recommend the Chicken Karaage, Fish (I forget the name), and ramen for the finisher. The only reason I can't give it a perfect five is just simply due to the fact that the portion/price ratio isn't the best. You can get amazing food and quality service but it's just too expensive sometimes when a small dish can cost more then a whole dinner somewhere else. After a two week trip to Japan, I would think that I would be avoiding Japanese food for a while since I ate it so much; however, I heard good things about the authenticity of the food at Yuzu and I just had to try it. Even after having so much Japanese food in Japan, I have to say that I was quite pleased with the quality and authenticity of the food at Yuzu. I stopped by here for dinner and ordered the mentaiko, karaage, and agedashi tofu for starters. The mentaiko was a bit overly salty for my taste-it probably would have tasted better with some rice. The karaage was nicely flavored, but it wasn't as crunchy as I would have liked it to be. The agedashi tofu was actually quite decent and the portion size was pretty generous. I got Yuzu's signature Kakuni ramen as my main dish and it was actually quite good! I have high expectations for ramen and Yuzu did not disappoint. I liked the texture of the noodles that were used-they were more on the firmer side. The broth was nice and rich, but not overly so. In addition, the pieces of pork that were served in the broth were massive (something different than the slices of pork that are usually served with a tonkatsu ramen). The service at Yuzu was a little bit slow since the restaurant was packed full. There is pretty limited seating so I would definitely try to go earlier if your party size is on the larger side. Knowing I was going to be in the Portland area, I was looking through Yelp and decided to search for Ramen. The reviews for Yuzu stood out as many said "Best ramen in the Pacific Northwest". LOCATION: It's the 3rd business from the center corner of a small "L" shaped strip mall. There is NO signage on the wall above the restaurant, unlike neighboring businesses. FIRST IMPRESSION: We walk in the door and I literally say "Oh..... wow....." and it wasn't a good "wow". The lighting is like someone's living room and not in a good way. The standard overhead commercial fluorescent lighting is off. Aside from the lights in the kitchen, there are only 3 other residential type floor lamps with CFL's lighting the whole place. The lighting is far from ideal. One could say it's more "intimate" this way... but, uhh.... no. SERVICE: After being seated we look over the menu, but it wasn't easy to read due to the poor lighting. Best ramen in Portland, no question. This is where you go when you want the good stuff. Get the Kakuni ramen (a couple dollars more than the others, but worth every penny) and if you're extra hungry get a side of the gyoza, they hand make them and they are delicious! I've been coming here for years and have never once had anything less than a stellar meal. It can get busy but I always sit at the counter so that doesn't usually effect me. The staff is nice, the place is clean and looks nice, I kinda miss their wood plank menu on the wall. It gave it a fun authentic touch. DISCLAIMER: Having never worked at an Izakaya in Japan during the 90's kind of makes me an expert on pretty much everything except for knowing what exactly an Izakaya is. I did however work as ferry boat pilot on the Dead Sea so I can tell you with certainty that the Dead Sea has nothing at all to do with Yuzu nor with their fine Japanese cuisine. I mean they actually fooled me into enjoying their Kakuni Ramen so much I actually believed that it was the most satisfying meal of my adult life. Honestly I don't know how I could have enjoyed the bright, savory and creamy broth, the melt in your mouth cubes of sweet sweet tender pork and the vast range of flavors and textures of ginger mushroom and scallions with a bit of aosa seaweed all ladled over delicious tender & slightly chewy Ramen noodles. I must be such a sucker to have thought that what I was eating was so Fantastically Delicious! So if you're naive like me then you will absolutely enjoy the food, service and price of this hidden little gem. My first bowl of ramen was during my visit in Tokyo, Japan five years ago & I was hooked from that moment on. It wasn't until I moved to Portland, over a year later, when I got my second fix. After a tireless, ongoing search I finally found & have determined Yuzu serves the best ramen in Portland. Most reviews rave & insist on ordering the Kakuni ramen. Because I'm not fond of pork belly, I steer away from it & order the Tonkotsu ramen. It's just as delicious with leaner roast pork rather than the soft, fatty pork belly. If texture is an issue, which it is for me, than Tonkotsu may be the better option for you as well. The cloudy, white colored pork bone broth is savory & filled with immense flavor while the noodles are cooked perfectly. The bowl looks small but the portions are far from it. The hot dish appetizer of bok choy is good but why must you cut off the leaves, Yuzu? That's the best part about bok choy. It was still tasty but it would've been more succulent if the leaves hadn't been removed. Another hot dish appetizer to try is the agedashi tofu. It's several large chunks of lightly fried tofu bathed in a broth much like soy sauce but lighter in flavor & less salty. A sprinkle of diced, green chives top it off should one desire more flavors in their bite. For everyone out there, especially Dorene S., Yuzu does accept reservations as well as walk-ins. They open at 6:00pm but fill up very quickly due to its small sized venue & because of this reservations are recommended. If you call before or after business hours then leave a message to reserve your spot. They will return your call just an hour or so before opening & I've never had any problems with it. Yuzu is located in a strip mall on the opposite end of Best Teriyaki. The only signage for it is four alpha stickers spelling out YUZU on the glass door. Not very obvious if you're driving by. The service has always been from the same friendly & very pleasant asian woman. The food is delectable, the service is top notch & now all they need to do is open a second location, preferably in SE PDX. read more

OMG best ramen place in my area. So authentic. I've been many times, and on Tuesday I decided to introduce two friends to the restaurant. They couldn't find it because there is no sign above the restaurant, just the words 'YUZU' in beige, on a tan door. Haha quite the camouflage. The food is delicious. Definitely get the pork katsu age. SOOO GOOD. The pork had mint stuffed into the middle then battered and fried with a vinagrette sauce on the side. I get this every single time. Great dish to share. Of course we all got ramen. Shoyu was delicious. And my favorite the Pork Bone Ramen, which came with ground garlic and toasted sesame seeds to put into the soup as you please. The meal was amazing as always. My favorite spot for ramen, definitely coming back. read more
