My first experience at Z&J's Asian Subs was terrrrrible! I ordered my favorite, the taro boba smoothie. All I could taste was the banana. I had never even had a taro smoothie that had banana in it before that. I called and complained that I had ordered a taro smoothie, not a banana one. The lady told me they always put banana in, but I could come back and they would make me one without the banana. I still refused to go back for I'd say, 3ish years. I finally gave them a second chance. They now ask you everytime if you want banana or not. Believe it or not, I decided I kind of like just a little bit in there. The boba itself? Uhh to die for! They actually let the boba boil for at least an hour and the texture is perfect! Unlike the instant boba from Happy Donuts. One day I decided to try a pulled pork sub. It was delicious! There were lots of veggies. Once I was halfway through, I decided I didnt care so much for the meat as I did the veggies. A sandwich with the veggies alone sounds great to me! All in all they have great quality food. They really care about flavor. The reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5, the prices are a bit high. But you have to consider they have to pay rent, and they make everything from scratch. All of their sauces, meats, everything. I would highly recommend trying Z&J's out. If you had one bad experience, give them another chance. read more

The people who work here are nice, and they have good customer service skills. However, the food I ordered was below average and the boba tea was below average. The pork is sometimes bland, and the rice bowls are filled with what I believe was a just a bunch of cardoons. This wasn't awful, but somewhat disappointing. The boba tea is below average because well quite frankly there should be more boba in boba tea. That's what makes it different from regular tea, the boba! I expect to have a good amount of boba when I order boba tea. With that being said, the service here is always very friendly. Came here for lunch and my friends and I were surprised that it's a drive-thru. I shared the large chicken sub. It's similar to a banh mi, but not. I didn't like the bread nor did I feel as if the BBQ sauce went with the sub. The vegetables were fresh though. read more

Good gods, was it ever worth getting spicy sauce on my white skirt. For for the affordable price of $5.50, I got a delectable, banh mih style sandwich on plush bread with shredded carrots, cucumber, and freshly chopped cilantro. The vinegar to sauce ratio was perfect, and the sauce itself was perfectly seasoned. The last time I had had a similar pulled pork asian sub was iin Boston, and as delicious as that sandwich was, it left me feeling like I had a fatty brick in my stomach. The pork here was seasoned better, was more moist, and was gone in approximately 5.5 seconds after I had my first taste. My one petty gripe: it's difficult to pull in to the drive-through line if you don't strategize a bit. I tried coming from the Target parking lot and had to do some maneuvering once the sign on the side of the building redirected me to order on the other side. After waiting for a bit, I was greeted by a nice man who took my order and gave me a fresh, delicious, real fruit smoothie to sip on while I waited. Way better then Subway! They make all the sandwiches fresh and made-to-order. I have tried the prime-rib, pork & chicken...ALL were very tasty. My only wish is that the beef was more on the rare side - I hate grey beef!!! I like the fact they smoke their own meat on site and also make their own BBQ sauce(s). The bread is from Vellutini's and is delivered fresh daily (or so I have been told by the owners). The Boba teas and smoothies are great and I can't wait to try the frozen lemonades. The owner is very nice and super chatty. I have yet to try the new Z & J (where the old Quiznos was in Eureka - next to Starbucks). I am sure it will be just as good. It's definitely my first choice if I want a sub sandwich. read more

Stopped by this little treasure while road tripping. My brother and I split a large (12") chicken sandwich with mild sauce. I thought everything was very tasty! The reviews are true about the overload of carrots. I enjoyed the carrot stash, but my brother did not. The mild sauce wasn't spicy at all, which was fine with me -- but now I'm curious about the spicy bbq sauce. This place will not disappoint. read more

This is one of TWO (out of 50+) sandwich joints in the entire Northstate that went above-and-beyond my expectations. This place is a drive through take out style sub shop with oh my gosh, amazing smoothies!! To die for fresh fruit flavor infusions. Super friendly staff! The man even gave us a smoothie sample while we waited in the car for our food. It was of some amazing lychee banana smoothie that he said some guy orders twice a day. Wow! The good: The food, the drinks/smoothies, the coffee, drive thru, and the employees are friendly and fun. The bad: Like most decent restaurants in Humboldt, VERY OVERPRICED. I would eat here more often if I didn't feel like I was getting ripped off every time. Bahn mi sandwiches shouldn't be more than $4, especially considering its a drive-through! I don't know how many of you can tell the difference between fresh boba pearls and processed...but I have to tell you the texture of the boba here is absolutely perfect. It is a little pricey but for the quality and expertise you're getting it is more than worth it. The vegetables are fresh, crisp, and locally sourced. Contrary to the negative opinions on the ratios I think there was plenty of meat to my meal and I appreciated the level of vegetables and the excellent sauce. The most important thing that is wonderful about this place is that it is unique and totally fresh. This is going to be my new go to spot and I am going to recommend this place to literally everyone I know. read more

Our family can't say enough positive things about this establishment. The husband is always going out of his way to make sure all customers are happy, giving away samples of their relishes smoothies and meats most of the time, (and my personal favorite) helping his wife! Literally had to search for the meat in my sandwich and too many carrots. I like spicy hot food, but it should be a compliment to the meat and vegetables and their's just overpowered. I found the owner arrogent and pushy. I guess if you don't mind spending $9-10 (drink and chips not included) for a carrot sandwich garnished with meat, then this is the place for you. Went to Z & J tonight. It was okay. There were very good parts and kinda bad parts. Lets start with the bad. The veggies were overwhelming. They sandwich has about a pound and a half of carrots on it. I had to take about 2/3 of them off. Other than that there really wasn't anything negative. I ordered mine spicy, and really like the peppers. Both the beef and pork were tasty, and the bread was quite good too. Overall this was a positive visit, but the overwhelming veggies and the lack of any lettuce or cabbage kinda threw the visit. read more

Since I can't be in L.A. this is really as good as it gets in humboldt county... but beware!!! I don't know what all the hype is about this place. Ordered 2 full size subs, one tofu and one prime rib. On the tofu sub there were only 4 thin slices of tofu and a huge serving of carrots, pretty much the same on the prime rib, hardly any meat and a ton of carrots.
