Came here for the first time with my wife and friends. Ordered the Catfish Beignets, Aguachile Shrimp Ceviche, Jerk Chicken Diablo Pasta, and the Chicken Fried Chicken and Waffles. Everything was pretty delicious and the presentation was beautiful. The Catfish Beignets were perfectly crispy with a hint of sweetness, but nothing super special about them, just tasted like fried catfish to me. The Diablo Chicken Pasta was nice and saucy, but like the catfish beignets, was a bit bland so I needed some salt to up the flavors. The shrimp ceviche was very refreshing, delicious, and a solid appetizer that was packed with flavor. The Chicken Waffles was good as well. The chorizo gravy sauce that came with it, was different, but complimented the whole dish very well. Overall, the portion was a bit smaller than I'd like for the price that I paid, but the food was overall pretty delicious. Our server Michael was fantastic. Guess things don't change much in 10 years. Had visited Z Tejas the first time years ago when I lived on San Antonio and the restaurant was located at La Cantera. Even then, i thought it was ok, especially for the price point. Stellar: First our server, Faith: she was super friendly, attentive and funny and made it a pleasant experience. Also, the shrimp tostada bites were killer - I could eat those all day. My wife's carajillo was perfect. OK: catfish beignets-the batter was well seasoned and crunchy, but it seemed like the actual fish needed seasoning as it was pretty bland. Grilled chicken sandwich was pretty bland too: the chicken was slightly dry and aside from the avocado, onion and tomato, there was not much flavor. Checked the buns to see if they were spread with an aoli but no, pretty dry. I thought Z Tejas was ok then and it's still ok and wouldn't be my first choice unless it's for happy hour where they have the shrimp tostadas on special. read more

I ordered lunch to be delivered from here and tried the Santa Fe enchiladas. The food arrived hot and looked super cheesy (I love cheese!). It came with a side of rice and beans and you could easily have two meals as it was a generous portion. While the portion size and presentation were impressive, the flavor was just okay. The spices didn't stand out, and the dish leaned a bit on the bland side. However, it did have a nice touch of heat that I appreciated. This visit was such a mix of high and lows. The trio chips had a really good queso but a bland guacamole. It is a super large app ... the table can share! Enjoyed the table cornbread .. it was a change of pace and a good flavor. The Mexican martini is their signature, yet they use a mix for the base and the tequila was lost in it. The chicken avocado sandwich was really complex with bacon, avocado, pico, spicy mayo, onions, lettuce, tomato and pickles. I felt like the basics without the garden add would have been enough, yet I did like it. A truly grilled chicken breast was a pleasant surprise. Visiting from Florida staying at our daughters in Marble Falls. We Love Z'Tejas. Years ago we went to the one in Austin on 6th Street (now closed) many great meals and memories. Went to the Outlet Mall and stopped at ZTejas for dinner on our way back home. Many familiar menu items. Michael took excellent care of us. He has been with them for 13 years was nice to hear what has happened to Z'Tejas over the years. Plenty of parking out front. Seated right away. The food and service was outstanding. The menu is classic, short, and simple. It's only two pages and the black cover and white pages, makes the menu bright white and easy to read. The server came a few seconds after we sat down and asked if we needed any assistance with the menu. I asked about their chicken avocado sandwich as well as their Z's burger. Ended up getting both, the Z's burger and Avocado sandwich! Awesome service and plenty of space to accommodate any larger or small party. Cons- Both the chicken sandwich and Z's burger came out a bit cold. The fries were hotter than the actual meats! We informed the waiter and he took both plates. About 6-8 minutes later, we received our plates with both meat as hot as they should've been. I've been here twice and had a slightly different experience each time. First, both times the food was excellent. The ahi tuna salad was scrumptious. The Chorizo stuffed pork Tenderloin was nice and spicy. My friend loved her fish tacos. And my husband said the bacon cheese fries were the best he's ever had. The first time I visited, we sat at a table. The server recommended a cocktail that wasn't on the menu. I had it and it was really good. But getting drinks took forever. Our server was trying but they simply weren't coming out of the bar. And the restaurant wasn't busy so there was no excuse for that. The second time I decided to sit at the bar. I hoped it would help with drink service. Drink service was faster than it had been at a table, but it was still difficult at times to get either of the bartenders attention. From my view at the bar I was able to identify the problem. The bartenders were playing on their phones almost constantly. Not professional. I'd recommend the managers address this issue. Drinks coming out slow affects your bottom line. And I don't want to see this potentially great place fail. read more

I see reviews all the time on burgers in area and outskirts, however I never see this place. The Z burger is one of the best burgers I've had. I mean like as is. I add nothing, no modifications only medium, and fries. I promise you, you will not be disappointed. We were really hoping to love Z Tejas it's close to home and the staff was genuinely friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, the food and pricing made for a disappointing experience. We came for lunch and spent $120 for three people, ordering just three entrées and two beers. The Michelada was an interesting concept beer poured over ice cubes for $12 each. A bit steep for lunch, especially considering the food quality. The queso arrived cold, the chile relleno lacked flavor, and the salmon was overcooked. The jerk chicken pasta had potential, but it was served in such a small bowl that it was hard to mix and enjoy the flavors properly. Place was nearly emptied we did go right after lunch time. Again, we really appreciated the service, but the overall dining experience especially at that price point was underwhelming. Sadly, we won't be returning. read more

We were looking forward to trying this place out but then we saw the mural. Y'all can represent Texans without mocking an entire religion. So the ambiance is lacking and we didn't get a chance to experience the service or the food. Disappointing because we've been wanting to try this spot. I recommend visiting this establishment for happy hour because they have some really good options, but was not impressed with my food outside of that time frame. In my opinion, the value and pricing does not match my expectations. The meal started off with some complementary cornbread which was very tasty but is the serving size is for one person and we were a party of two. I had the salmon with grilled veggies. The salmon had a garlic butter sauce that was a bit too buttery and I didn't care for the flavors of the veggies. Also my salmon was overcooked and had a burnt flavor due to the char marks from the grill. This is a large establishment that is capable of fitting large parties. The chefs are experimenting with their unique twist to my typical Mexican or Texan food. Don't go here and assume this is what Mexican food tastes like. Is the food edible? Yes. I will begin by describing my tortilla soup. It tasted great, for mole sauce rather than tortilla soup. It was the taste, consistency, and color of mole. It had very little shredded chicken. The beef fajitas were not as tender as we' d like them to be; however, they had good flavor. Great modern ambience in Kyle. We definitely needed a place like this! A few comments I did have was their chaotic check in process (especially if you don't have a reservation). There were multiple people that went ahead of the line even if they too didn't have a reservation. We ended up getting a reservation while waiting (and surprise surprise we got seated right away). My recommendation is to always sign up for a reservation because their check in process is chaotic for those without a reservation. The food was good but they were backed up in the kitchen during the Friday night we had dined. The food was good but not something remarkable. They had barbacoa street tacos but didn't serve any salsa with it. The beef barbacoa was not tender. The corn bread was a nice touch as their complementary bread. The overall meal and experience was "alright". We would probably come back and visit during a non Friday evening. That is to give it another analysis on experience. Amazing happy hour deals! We arrived around 3/3:30 for a small appetizer and drinks. The yuca fires are unique but not my favorite item, if you are feeling curious try them why not! The margaritas here are awesome for the $6 price! Would recommend to all Margarita happy hour lovers! First one down and we were feeling so happy go lucky! Server was laid back and very friendly. To be perfectly honest I had no idea what Z-Tejas was when it just finished being built. I drove by several times thinking well that's jewelry store of something of the like. Not giving it much more thought, my girlfriend and I were out and about and decided to stop by as she said it was a restaurant. Well, game on! Located right off I-35 with plenty of parking in a very safe spot Z-Tejas is worth the time to drop by for tasty and creative beverages or really good Tex Mex with flair. Opening the huge door which I thought was going to be extremely heavy, yet it was perfectly balanced thus I knew this was going to be a great experience. For those who're reading, yes, I did compliment a door design.... Walking in the place has tall ceilings thus a higher decibel tolerance in terms of hearing a conversation. The floor plan is wide open with "garage doors" open to a deck area and various fireplaces sprinkled about. The tables are comfy and the bar is smack tab in the middle with all it's adult beverage majesty and big tv screens above the alcohol as well as on the walls. I do have questions about the huge and interesting mural but that's another topic. My waiter was awesome; he knew the menu backwards and forwards offering great suggestions and substitutions. For example, he said he would know what level of heat to recommend to us after we ate the salsa. He was phenomenal and really did set the table, pun intended, of great things to come. Now, I'm not a big day time drinker however my girlfriend got a cocktail and went on and on how great it was in terms of balance with tropical fruits and alcohol levels. Our chips and salsa were perfect and I believe I saw some charring of the tomatoes. Moreover, I can't eat spicy food for health reasons so I was happy I could indulge in America's favorite condiment with perfectly crispy chips that gave me a salty kiss. Now I don't dig on queso dip very much but this version was outstanding as it wasn't like that Velveeta crap a lot of restaurants pass off as dip but a good cheese blend. Moreover, there chipotle adobo offered such a perfect earthy but tolerable heat I found myself "double dipping", but hey if my female friend can kiss me, she can deal with my used chip going for another skinny dip in the gooey cheese. They said it has Pico de Gallo but it's just a sprinkle; not an issue just a note. Finally the cornbread was an unexpected but lovely addition. It's pretty basic, but hey, I'm from Charleston SC so I'm not complaining and at it up with a bunch of the butter. For the main course, the lady ordered the shrimp ceviche. It was an extremely light and refreshing dish with a barley discernable note of heat. The citrus perfectly macerated (to cook without heat but with acid, hence how ceviche is "cooked") shrimp. The avocado mango relish provided a sharp sweetness and a soft creamy texture to balance the crunch and dull heat of the pickled red onions. The cilantro pesto was fresh, habanero and tomato played their backup parts beautifully. As for my dish I ordered the mushroom enchiladas. As I was making my order, my waiter suggested adding in chicken and spinach and so I figured it was time to negotiate. I retorted with shrimp and spinach? My waiter was all over it, complimenting me on my desires. This is a prime example of being extremely customer oriented and I "ate it all up," pun intended. The corn tortillas were perfectly cooked but gave way to the earthy mushrooms and I believe my shrimp provided a good resistance to the mouth as I chewed. The mole which a stable of central American cooking comprising of over 30 intricate ingredients were balanced and elevated the dish to levels that brought a tear to my eye. The Mango relish was as I previously stated while the sour cream really brought the dish together. I don't dig on beans but my girlfriend ate roughly 5 bites so that's a good sign. That said the rice was phenomenal as it wasn't a traditional red rice with a dominate lard flavor from being sautéed yet more grounded as it tasted like it was cooked in a mushroom stock. Be prepared it's a great interpretation of the staple of the Mexican themed experience. Overall, I was blown away by my experience b/c to quote Simon Cowell from America's Got Talent, "I wasn't expecting that." The atmosphere, the waiter, the adult beverages and the food, everything worked in harmony to provide an upscale adventure at a modest cost. Fourth times not the charm. We have tried again and again for a GOOD experience here. The first few times, service was slow, food was lackluster. Today we went for Father's Day after receiving several marketing texts to book. We paid $100 for a few drinks and a late meal, and eventually asking to box up our food as it was taking too long. It took us 1.5 hours to receive food, after a quick beignet appetizer. Our plates have never been cleaned up in advance. (I was tempted to clear the table on my own) Drinks come, but only after you've finished your first. This is not a server issue, it's a business strategy issue and perhaps slow chefs in back. I would love a call from management and a refund for our missed Father's Day meal. We are eating it at home now out of plastic boxes. And it ain't pretty. We had Aji Tuna salad and Buffalo wings, which should have taken less than 15 minutes. The servers here are always sweet. Went here for brunch recently, I got the barbacoa egg omelet with potatoes. I don't think they have a sub for the potatoes they were very large and just very plan not even any salt. The omelet was good just very simple. Kinda pricey and only had the few brunch menu other than the buffet. (Note: I write Facebook reviews for residents of Turner's Crossing, a new development in Buda, as we all learn about good places to dine in Austin.) ------------- I think wife Karen and I have just found a splendid replacement for one of the top three restaurants in our growing list of Austin area favorites. It's only about 10 minutes south on I-35, at the southwest corner of the Kyle Crossing area. Let me tell you up front that I am going to run out of superlatives to describe this fine eatery. It is an upscale, sort of sophisticated fusion of Tex-Mex with Southern cooking. These are not your standard Tex-Mex dishes either, but you'll realize that very quickly in glancing through the menu. Z'Tejas is a comfortable, spacious, contemporary place with some dishes I have never seen on a restaurant menu. It's a small chain of four establishments -- two in Arizona, and two in Texas. Turner's Crossing residents are lucky to have one so close. Our server, Grant, was friendly, efficient and professional, answering questions about the unusual dishes without hesitation. As soon as we were seated, he brought out some of the place's signature cornbread, served in small metal skillets on wooden coasters. Without question, the best cornbread I have ever had. If an adult beverage is your favorite way to kick off a good meal, be aware that the place has a long list of unusual, specialty margaritas, along with other libations. Without doubt, the menu had Karen and me salivating as we looked at it for the first time. Prices, by the way, are moderate. Our two dining companions had been here a few times before, so they knew what to expect. We had made reservations at 5 on a Wednesday afternoon, but they weren't necessary because the place didn't start to fill up until about 6-6:30. Still, it wasn't crowded even after 7, so we didn't mind lingering until nearly 7:30. I suspect we would not have had that luxury on a weekend night, when reservations are highly advised. If you are adventurous when it comes to dining out, then this is the place for you. It's not that the entrées themselves are so unusual, but that the sometimes surprising pairings of sauces, spices and ingredients lift them out of the merely good category. Consider, for example, the Chicken Tinga Chile Relleno. First, the poblano pepper was the largest we had ever seen. It was packed with cotija cheese, pecans, raisins, apricot, green and red sauces, and sour cream. Karen said it was delicious, not too spicy, but could only finish half of it, considering it came with hefty sides of rice and borracho beans.The rest came home with us. I chose the grilled salmon, a good-size filet anointed with a succulent tequila/pineapple glaze. Definitely not your ordinary salmon dish. It was served with a perfectly cooked order of broccoli and carrots, plus a side of tasty rice. Needless to say, I did not need a doggy box. Our friend Kim ordered the nachos, which were beautifully presented with a cotija cheese blend, borracho beans, sour cream, guacamole, and pico de gallo. Her husband Rick opted for the fried snapper, adorned with crab meat, cilantro pesto, herb butter and pico de gallo. The fish fillet was substantial and accompanied by a mix of carrots and broccoli with a side of rice. The place doesn't skimp on portions, and the dishes are plated to look as good as they taste. My wife and I were in a mood for something different and we never been to Z-Tejas before. We had heard some good word of mouth compliments for the service and food, so we decided why not. After it had first opened, l had read some mixed reviews from diners. Some were not favorable but others defended the restaurant, so l was a little leary and now wished I had listened to my instinct. The place was beautiful and the atmosphere was warm and delightful especially with the 2 open fire pits giving off a warm and inviting glow. Our waiter (sorry l forgot his name) met us at the door and promptly sat us. His mannerism was fantastic ( only reason l gave 2 stars) . He was very attentive but not pushy. He made suggestions for the beverages and appetizer. The tea was tasty, the Queso and chips were mediocre. The cheese was thick, clumpy and grainy. The adobo sauce was overly sweet. The cheese was burnt on top around the edges giving the overly concoction a bitter taste. The corn bread was hard (over cooked) cold. My wife ordered the grilled Salmon classic style (their words) and I had the Chicken Tinga Chili Renano. Like I said the waiter was very attentive constantly refilling our teas, so off the the men's room. After spending thousands on the creation of a great atmosphere, the restroom was under- whelming. The pipes looked cheep and not well installed showing signs of rust already and one of the wash basins had a broken water spigot being held up by a very dirty looking bottle of something. My wife's grilled salmon had very little flavor except for the flavor given off from a less than fresh piece of fish. My dish was also undesirable with the chicken being very sweet to point l couldn't taste chicken. The filling looked like chicken salad (overly blended with the pineapple, raisins and pecan). I could not distinguish any of the ingredients from the mush that comprised the filling. Well we tried something new, not really happy that we did, but the waiter made our visit pleasant, sorry I can't say the same for the food. read more
