Here is my matter of factly review of Zataar; 1.)The food here is amazing. It's always fresh and crispy. 2.)Falafels are to die for. 3.) Probably the BEST french fries in the city. They recently added an outdoor patio which is nice but (read on) 6.) I hate to take off any stars because it's so damn good BUT, it's loud as shit because it is right under the El. THE YOUNG LADY THAT TAKES YOUR ORDER OVER THE PHONE IS THE SOLE REASON AS TO WHY I WILL NEVER ORDER FROM HERE AGAIN! Originally I tried ordering thru GrubHub. I have a pretty big order because I wanted to take some food over to my neighbors house whose family isn't doing so well, so the order was larger than normal. When I tried placing the order on GH, it gave me a message saying "One of the items isn't available", but it didn't specify what item. So I went to their website directly to place the order and I filled everything out, but for some reason the website doesn't allow you to change it from "Pickup" to "Delivery". This led me to calling the order in. The young lady taking the order immediately sounded annoyed. No worries, I understand that people have a tough day and some of that emotion and energy may come across to a customer, so in order to make things smooth I go extra to ensure that I am as clear as possible and this wasn't any exception. So I'm reading the order and the entire time she is huffing and puffing over the phone (as if she wanted to get it over with), half way through my order she says "Is that it?" in this really rude tone. Ummmmm....even if I had 53 more its, this is still money coming into YOUR ESTABLISHMENT?! Do you NOT like getting money?! smh I get to my 2nd to last item and that's when I find out they don't have it anymore, but instead of hanging up and going back to GH, I just finish with her. She reads it off, and I asked a question about the first item she mentioned and she responds with, "Uh, that's what I said when I read off your whole order" with this sassy tone. Like, lady, I wasn't rude to you NOT ONE TIME during this conversation? What was the point of that? What did you gain from that? Not sure what satisfaction you got from that but I'll be sure to do you the favor and NOT spend my money there again. I try my best to be compassionate with folks especially during this time where local businesses need as much help as they can get, but when you purposely are this nasty to your customers, then I can't rock with you. Not a bad spot in a pinch or if you just want something convenient, however, the quality is just OK. I've definitely had better food at just about any Mediterranean spot in the city, including chains like IDOF. Our orders are always correct and it's a substantial amount of food, so on that level it's a solid carryout option. If it's close by and you're hungry, go for it. If you're looking for good Mediterranean, don't go out of your way for this one. read more

Just checked this place out as I literally live right around the corner... food is good, what you would expect. I think it would be priced just right if everything was a dollar cheaper or so... kinda pushing it's luck especially for a grab and go kinda atmosphere. Also, they have messed up two orders. My boyfriend and I went in - he ordered no tomatoes with his chicken plate... the girl at the register definitely heard him and acknowledged it... but then another girl came up while we were still paying, looked over her shoulder, and shouted the order to the guy in the back to make... and didn't mention the 'no tomatoes' part...we just kinda looked at each other and laughed because we knew it wouldn't be right.. and it sure wasn't. But the other girl didn't correct her either... My friend tonight just ordered take out, and he ordered an extra pita but they forgot it. He said it twice on the phone, and they repeated the order back, but they still didn't come through. Seems like they are bad with taking side orders or if you have a special request. Love Zaatar! Best chicken swarma sandwich I've ever had. It's more of a wrap than in a pita, which I love. The Greek salad with chicken kabob is also a favorite. Really everything I have tried there is great. Always ready fast and on time and super nice staff. Highly recommend. read more

Food is good BUT the "buy 1 get 1 free" chicken shawarma deal on ubereats they started doing a while back is BS. When you order the "buy 1 get 1 free" chicken shawarma they simply give you much less chicken than what they were giving you for a single order (and who knows maybe they started cutting back on that too). As far as the amount of chicken you get when you order that, it's like you're getting 1.25x or 1.5x the amount of chicken from a single order vs. actual 2x. Kind of a scumbag move so I'm not as inclined to order from there as much. If they respond to this review denying it just know they're full of sh1t. read more

Quality Mediterranean and Shawarma places are abundant in Wicker Park, but few and far between in the areas between Humboldt Park and Logan Square. This place is a GEM located near Armitage and Western. Food: 5/5 stars. Fresh and proprietary. Everything seems to be made from scratch unlike very cheap gyro places that use the same Kronos food supplier. For $20, we got 2 chicken shawarma wraps, 2 falafels, and an order or red pepper hummus. Sandwiches were on point, and maybe better than Shawarma Garden and Pita Cafe of Wicker Park. Be sure to get the chili sauce and garlic sauce on the side. Dining: Zaatar is best for pick up, delivery, or carry out with limited dining area, which is fine. Everything was made to order and took less than 10 mins. Will definitely be coming back. The only downside is they aren't a late night food option as they are only open until 11pm, but this probably doesn't have the foot traffic to justify it. read more

This is hands down the best Mediterranean food I've had in Chicago. I order takeout from here at least twice a month and every time it's perfect! The dolmas taste super fresh and are never mushy or soggy like so many places are. The tabouli is also crisp and has just the right amount of lemon juice. Oh and the babaganoush is also killer!!! I had an opportunity to check out Zaatar MedGrill. It's truly a hidden treat! It's located in the city and the food is absolutely delicious. I've tried the shawarma sandwiches and hummus and they were worth the trip. I can't wait to try their combo platters. Based on the seasoning and tenderness of the meat, I'm sure they would taste just as good as the sandwiches. If you are in the area be sure to check them out. They have a nice small little sitting area outside with about 3 tables and a small indoor area as well, great for a quick meal. Only downfall just like any other small city restaurant is the limited street parking. For someone who has tried endless amount of middle easter food, this would be in my top 10. Sometimes you just need a gyro. There's no rhyme or reason for when the craving hits but it saved myself and my husband before venturing out for the day on a Saturday to explore our new neighborhood. Zaatar hit the spot - fresh basket of fries, two gyros and a couple of sodas to wash it down. All in a matter of a half an hour! Alright as of 4/11/20 I'm going to go ahead and give them 5 stars. I'll admit I had some hiccups with them before over wait time. Maybe it's because if you order during peak times they slow down a little but let's talk food. I ordered the chicken shawarma plate. It's 5 stars. Not dry , not wet. Damn near perfect. Seasoned just right. Not overly seasoned and not underly seasoned where you find yourself looking for salt packets.Portions were generous and staff was down to earth. Want to know how to take a pretty bad situation and make it even worse? Ask this place. The short of it is that I ordered take out, found a piece of GLASS in my food, and then called to let them know. They did refund me, but called back about 30 minutes later asking me to bring the food back in so that they could "inspect" it. Obviously it makes perfect sense that I would've tossed the food in the garbage already, but they didn't seem to think that was rational or acceptable, so they proceeded to imply that I was a liar and that the presence of glass in my food was completely impossible. Fantastic food at fantastic prices! Got the falafel dinner platter, and it comes w/6 falafel on soft pilar rice and a generous salad. Definitely get the hummus appetizer too, there's plenty of pita and hummus for $3, and my friend got the chicken swarma sandwich that's also a hefty portion. I ordered from them on Ubereats, under the name Habibi Mediterranen Grill (same restaurant). My two gyro plates were supposed to come with two sides each. I didn't get any of the four sides! When I called to complain, they said they couldn't do anything about it and that I could ask for a free item on my next order. I said I wasn't planning on ordering from them again and that I wanted something to be done about this order. They still wouldn't do anything about it. The Shawarma sandwiches here are amazing! With high quality juicy meat (not dried up jerky) and crunchy pickles and a beautiful sauce, this was one of the most tastiest shawarmas I've had in Chicago!
