Been eating Zachary's since they first opened on Solano in Berkeley in the late 80's. Best Chicago pizza I've ever had! My go to has always been a large stuffed Zachary's special. I always get a thin pep and sausage for the kids. This time however, my daughter went alone and found herself near lake Merritt and decided to try it. Wonderful venue! So serene and peaceful. The staff here is extremely attentive and friendly. Her waitress guided my daughter to her section. The waitress went above and beyond my daughters expectations! She ordered a thin Zack's special and added the pep to it. The waitress pointed out that it was her favorite as well. My daughter was by herself and only ate two slices. When she asked the rest to go, the awesome waitress brought her the pizza in their famous cardboard box. But she drew the most lovely caricature with a simple "have a nice day" written on top with a sharpie! This made my daughter (because my daughter has the same style with her own art) so happy. To the point that from now on my daughter will visit the Grand location more often! She forgot the waitresses name but my daughter wanted me to share what she drew. Please visit this location. Zachary's stuffed crust pizzas never disappoint. This was my second visit to the Grand Lake restaurant within the past year. Its atmosphere is very welcoming and calm. Even when my uncle and I felt the background music was too loud for us to hear each other interact, the staff were happy to accommodate by lowering the volume. The arugula salad was simple but very fresh and not overbearing with the vinaigrette dressing. I felt that the Rustic Italian pizza had a soft texture but its filling of whole roasted garlic cloves gave it that needed "bite." Unfortunately, I could barely taste the Italian sausage due to being smothered in the tomato sauce. However, the mozzarella cheese amount was perfect. What was more frustrating, I could tell that the person I was speaking with was the person who took my order and he didn't own the mistake. I love the pizza, but the service really has an opportunity. And now that everything costs more , aka $50+ for one pizza, you can't have mistakes like that. We're at Zachary's Chicago Pizza in Oakland. Oakland. Let me tell you how I think about Oakland. I think Oakland is one of the great sports cities in the country when they get things going. The Black Hole with the Raiders -- they don't have them. Oracle with the Warriors -- they lost them. Even the Oakland A's -- you think Reggie Jackson back -- it sucks that Oakland doesn't have professional sports teams because they have some of the best crowds, best homes. So, I hate that. Now, this was the second most requested place in all the Bay Area. We don't know why. Chicago pizza -- Super Bowl order -- plenty of Super Bowl, pick it a few days in advance. Now, it looks good. I did go back and get napkins because it's so hard to eat this in the one-style review, but that looks really good. One bite. Everybody knows the rules. Don't want to burn my face off. Zachary's deep dish, Oakland. Face burned off. This is a different scale, by the way. I don't know how you can compare a deep dish with any other type of pizza. It's in a different category. I like deep dish. It's just -- how much can you eat? It's like a sit-down 45-minute meal. But it's rare you have this good a deep dish that isn't a chain like Uno's or Lou Malnati's or something that relocated. This is not a chain. They do have more than one location here -- a few of them -- but you don't see a pure Chicago-style place like this outside of Chicago very often. This is very good. I'm going to go for a deep dish. Went to Zachary's to meet a friend on my way home from a long weekend. He asked me if wanted pan pizza and of course I took the opportunity, as I enjoy a good deep dish. I was not disappointed as the sauce and crust were very flavorful. The other plus was the staff. The service was excellent. Food: got the deep dish chicken special which was my favorite, Idk why the table was complaining there wasn't enough chicken I thought there was and got the Zachary special deep dish which was a big let down because it was barely deep dish. Because they go so light on the filling ur eating mostly crust. If I'm coming for deep dish I want a real deep dish, quite unsatisfying. They have the full capabilities to do it but they skimp on the filling. The Caesar salad was really good I could eat a family size one by myself. Service: meh, not bad but not good. As my bf's birthday tradition we have Zachary's pizza. This time we visited the Grand Ave restaurant in Oakland. We ordered the medium deep dish pizza with Pepperoni, Sausage, Mushroom and spinach. It was delicious, as usual. The pizzas are so thick and meaty, I can only eat one slice at a time, but we love to have some to take home. We also shared the Arugula salad which was huge (family size) Our server, Morse, was very friendly and professional. He even added a little drawing to our To-go box when he packed up our leftovers. I will say everything was good but fair warning, like most restaurants these days, the prices have gone up. Dinner with one beer each was $77 before tip. They do 2 different things extremely well, IMHO. 1. Deep dish "stuffed," whole wheat crust, pizza, with 1-3 toppings. The crust and sauce and cheese is so delish, that too many toppings just spoil the flavor. My faves are mushrooms, spinach, roasted garlic, and pepperoni. Pick 2-3 of the above, and I am in heaven. The whole wheat crust just tastes better. 2. Their thin crust, ricotta cheese, white pizza with a pesto spiral on top. This is something between dinner and dessert. It is rich, savory, and sweet. I love Zachary's. My mom started taking us to the one in Rockridge in the early 80's. The location by the lake is the closest to my home. The consistency across the chain is amazing. I never get the deep dish that everyone loves because I appreciate the ratio of cheese ( tons of it) to crust on the "thin" crust pizza. The pepperoni is high quality and always plentiful. I also love the thick chunks of tomato in the sauce and the herbs. Takes a little time for them to make a pie but definitely worth the time and money...and trying to find a parking space. Came by with 30 minutes to eat a fast lunch yesterday before a 1pm appt nearby. CJ, the server was on top of it with friendly and prompt service. I ordered an entree size Caesar salad with minimal shredded cheese. I love that it comes in a CHILLED bowl and the portion is so big. Total was $17.36 and I was full the rest of the day. The croutons are toasted and garlic flavored and so crunchy. The dressing is made in house and it's delicious. The romaine lettuce is always cold and fresh and very crunchy. I always come for the deep dish pies but the salad really hit the spot for me and I was grateful to be able to eat a healthy large size salad in the 30 min window I had and still made it to my appointment on time, thanks to CJ's efficient service. As someone who grew up in the Midwest eating deep dish Chicago pizza - I have to give a shout out to Zachary's. I've been living in the Bay Area for over 10 years, and this is by far the best deep dish pizza west of the Mississippi. I like this location in particular because I feel like parking is easier and it's generally less busy. My go-to order is the deep dish pizza with Spinach. It's nice to not over-complicate it with too many toppings, as the cheese is the main star here. Be prepared to leave full and take a box home with you for leftovers. I'd also recommend grabbing a glass of wine while you're at it. read more

Love this pizza joint. It's casual but provides high-quality pizza and a friendly, old-school environment. We got the deep dish and a thin crust and found ourselves commenting on how delicious the tomato sauce was. Veggies were perfectly cooked. Non-pizza food: Salad, although not spectacular, was massive and got the job done. Standard selection of beer and wine. Staff was bustling on a Sunday evening. It's clearly a popular neighborhood spot! They were friendly and did their best. They serve the first slice for you, which is a nice touch if service. There's a cute stool next to each table. Functional (for your pizza) but also adds a bit of quirky charm. We came away very satisfied and with plenty of delicious leftovers. Well, the food is pretty amazing there I have to say the freshness and flavors are really fantastic. Kudos to the kitchen keeping it real - real delicious. We had a server, young girl who got our order wrong, and the issue with getting an order wrong is you gotta wait another 30 minutes for them to make the new pizza and we were starved! The manager who delivered our pizza confirmed it was incorrect when I questioned about the order, was apologetic and kept checking back on us including providing us the ingredient that was missed that we put on top of the pizza, but let me tell you the flavor is much better when it's cooked into the pie. Apparently the correct order was never entered in the computer, and I even had the initial server repeat it back to me-confirmed with her The manager did let us know he would discount our order for the mistake - we had to remind them of the discount when we got the check because it never got entered in the computer, which was slightly awkward. I don't know what the deal is with computer entry and this location but it's kind of a thing I guess. Back to the particular server that didn't enter our order correctly , they never came back to our table, never provided any check ins. Walked by us about 15 times. I have to say either the training is bad or this server just didn't care - that was the most disappointing part. Are my expectations too to high? It seems like every other person working there was an attentive except the person who served our table. Ugh! This was at the grand Avenue location. I usually go to the college Avenue location. It seems to me the college ave location has a different way of managing or should I say they all have the same standard ...where it's obviously very different or unmanaged at the grand Avenue location l. However, when a new girl came on her shift before we left, who did pay attention to us, we were able to get more water and our check - and then a second check after reminding them of the Discount the manager told to us. All I can say to Zachary's, like in my company, everyone who works their represents you, if they're not up to the task, you either train them correctly or replace them with someone who is willing to do the right thing and represent you appropriately. Ordered a half cheese/half pepperoni because I am vegetarian and was sharing with a meat eater - they put pepperoni on 6 out of 8 slices and covered all the pepperoni in cheese, so I had to peel up all the cheese to find the ones without pepperoni. This was my first time at this pizzeria. We went to celebrate my daughter 's Birthday and her mother-in-law's birthday. We had The deep dish Mediterranean and the Zachary special. Both pieces were delicious. We also ordered an arugula salad that everyone said was delicious. My only comment was on the deep dish. There was just a bit too much tomato sauce on the top but all in all it was delicious. But that's only my opinion because I personally don't care for too much tomato sauce on my pizzas. The flavours for both pizzas were absolutely fabulous. My daughter and son in law live nearby and they wanted to take us to their favourite pizza place. We live in Sebastopol so it was a treat for us to try something in their neighborhood. We will be back and if you go you too will enjoy your experience. Called in an order for dine in and in order to get started on the 45 mins it takes for the pizza. We normally just order for pick up and have almost no complaints. For father's day we wanted to enjoy a sit down experience. The person on the phone said they were full and would not be guaranteed a table. We found it odd, considering the last 8 times we have picked up pizza there it has never been more than half full and said we were ok with them starting the order and we would take a chance. We got there and were greeted by what seemed one of the managers and had a table right away ( being that at least 10 tables were available ) It took or waitress about 15 mins to come and greet us. Then we let her know we had already ordered our food and ordered our drinks. She was not happy at all or even lively. Everyone in our table noticed the lack luster. ( If you are working on a holiday, why would you have that attitude ?) it is not the customer's fault and all they want is to have a nice experience. A table came about 25 mins after us and sat close by. We observed the same waitress take drinks to them and brought their food out within 20 mins. We still didn't have our beers. And not once did she come and ask how we were doing and or letting us know what the progress of our pizza was. I really think said person needs some training and if they are having a bad day, they need to let management know right away for someone else to pick up their slack. Plenty of waitresses were available. A woman who seemed to be another manager was back there too, so someone could have taken over. No one wants to go out and celebrate a special day, then have an employee ruin the experience with their poor attitude and work ethic. read more

I personally think the sauce is a little bit too heavy but overall, I would definitely recommend this piece, especially for someone who never had it before. Nice ambience, but it went downhill fast. First, a hair was stuck to the inside of my salad bowl. Then the Salad didn't have the dressing I've ordered. The two pizzas came in the same sizes even though we ordered one small, one medium. The pizza itself was underwhelming, I've never had such a bad crust--it tasted like frozen supermarket pizza. I enjoyed the stuffed pizza here at Zachary's, but I thought it could've been saucier and wasn't as thick as a true deep dish pizza. They have happy hour every weekday between 3-5:30, with hh deals for both drinks and snacks but not for pizza unfortunately. When we arrived at 5, the restaurant was completely empty, though it quickly filled up and was completely full when we left at 6:30. The space is very large and is great for big groups. We saw a party of 12 getting seated while we were there. They can do half half for a stuffed pizza, so we did a small 10" stuffed pizza with half Carne and half Super Veggie for $28.26. The menu clearly states that it takes 30-40 minutes for a stuffed pizza, and I'd say that's pretty accurate. We were one of the first tables to order and didn't have our pizza until 40 minutes later. Don't come here if you're hungry! They really load the stuffed pizza up with toppings but I felt that it wasn't saucy enough. Also, the Carne pizza was quite salty since all the meats it came with (sausage, pepperoni, salami, chopped bacon) are fairly salty on their own. My friend really liked his veggie pizza, but I thought mine was just okay. I'm glad we got a small, as I wanted to minimize the amount of leftovers. I was only able to finish 2/3 Carne slices.
