We went to Zaftig's after work on my boyfriend's birthday. This place is very nice, clean, the hostess is inviting, and because it was not a weekend, there was no wait. We liked our food very much, and the waitress was friendly. Although 2 things happened: the waitress, a young lady with an outgoing personality, brought us a wrong check. When my BF told her politely about a mistake, she did not think it was a big deal. When he left her a nice tip, there was no thank you or anything. Silence. I thought it was bizarre. Only open less than a week, but I've eaten at the Natick Zaftig's twice now, and feel ready to write a review. Those familiar with Joan and Ed's deli will recognize the shape of the interior - not that much has changed, I think it was about 4-5 months since they announced that Zaftig's would be coming to Natick. With that much time, you might expect a hand-carved mahogany interior with gold leaf, complete with cherubs and turrets. But no. Even so, the new Zaftig's furnishings are much classier than their predecessor. The tables are a little close together, but it's similar to other places. And you'll still probably have more elbow room than you would at Kugel's. The Brookline Zaftig's is much larger as I recall (could be wrong!). There is now a tiny little bar area, though, which will come in handy for shoppers wanting to steel their nerves before braving the Christmas Tree Shops. Though if you ask me, having a Deli next to the Christmas Tree Shops is somewhat jarring. Other reviewers are mentioning that the prices are high. I agree. The value proposition is not the big draw. We ate breakfast and dinner, where I had stuffed French Toast and a hot corned beef sandwich, respectively. My co-diners generally agreed that the food was good, not exceptional. If the prices had been lower by 30%, I would have been delighted. On the other hand, the waitstaff and management were very friendly and attentive. Atypical of the stereotypical New York deli, to be sure. They wear Zaftig's t-shirts that say "Best of Boston" on the back, but that refers to their Brookline location. This new Zaftig's doesn't merit that designation yet, IMHO. Despite the expense, I'm giving Zaftig's 4 stars for good food, very good service, and a nice ambiance. And also because they have a nice selection of deli meats, prepared foods, and desserts to go. Again, on the pricey side. But there really isn't anything in the area to compete - we needed a deli "real bad" around here! Kugels is okay and cheaper, but not a very pleasant dining environment. Since they've only been open a week, I can only speculate how the place will change over time. I'm just guessing that the staff will become a bit less friendly, and the food will get a little better. I will second the other poster who said the chopped liver was "off". I thought the service was fake friendly to just plain off putting. I enjoyed Brooklines location so much I thought I would try this one close to home. I was a huge fan of Joan & Eds so my pallet WAS feeling nostalgic upon entering but I did have the other locations experience to let me know what I was in for. The food is good, the staff was very friendly - we just ordered takeout. The rugulah was delightful along with the potato kinishes and gravy. The meat knisish, however, has more of a pulled meat texture and it was really really dry. Not so good. Lunch today with friends, it was a throw back to old fashion classic delicatessens. Food was amazing from the pickles and coleslaw to every meal we ordered. The Israeli couscous salad and the Rueben were great. They also serve breakfast all day. On our way out we had cookies that were a nice treat. Terrible service. Absolutely garbage. She messed up my order and got pissed off at me for saying it was wrong. She slammed down the two dishes she was holding and checked her notepad to see if I was correct. Turns out that she wrote down the wrong thing and left taking the dish back. Seems like she really hated her job and should just quit. She had a nasty attitude and never apologized. The food was decent except it was always a struggle to get the food because they would always take the food to the WRONG TABLE. They really need a lot more training in customer service because they were so rude. If you're in such a terrible mood just don't GO to work or at least TRY to have a happy mood. The only time she actually smiled was when we left. I guess we pissed her off when she messed up OUR order. We should've just stayed at home and had soggy cereal because anything is better than that diner. read more

Mind you, I spent 12 bux for sandwiches before, in places like SF or NYC where things are generally expensive, but in a suburb for subpar sandwiches? I'm a big fan of Zaftig's. I live in Newton, so I used to frequent the Brookline one but the Natick location is easier in terms of parking. The prices are high, but the meals are large. I love the Empire Eggs (eggs benedict with lox over latkes), the knishes, and the mac and cheese. My toddler loves the silver dollar pancakes from the kids menu...I do, too, because I usually steal a bite or two! I'm not a huge fan of the grilled cheese (too thick for my taste) or the noodle kugel (sweeter than what I'm used to) but pretty much everything else is good. I always go home with some desserts for later. I'm usually too full to eat dessert there, but later in the day I am ready to indulge in a black and white cookie. (A REAL black and white cookie...I notice here in Massachusetts they sometimes have the wrong type of frosting) The wait can be long and they close kinda early for dinner (they closed at 8 the last time I was there for dinner) so I prefer to go during off-times. read more

I used to frequent Joan & Ed's Deli and recently have really been missing them so I decided last Saturday to take my mom to Zaftig's for breakfast. Neither of us were too happy: I ordered an EW omelet and dry english muffin and mom ordered two eggs easy over with potatos and toast. My omelet was butter-soaked. I was perturbed but felt unable to complain since I had not specified when I ordered that I didn't want my omelet prepared with fats. We both watched a server setting a table put a fork that had fallen to the floor on the table. I decided that we would give Zaftig's another try this morning. Disaster! Mom ordered oatmeal. Her oatmeal came tepid and instead of asking her the waitress had put the sides of brown sugar and yellow raisins on the oatmeal. My order was a complete and unmitigated disaster. I had decided to try again: EW omelete and dry english. This time I was very careful to tell the server that I did not want the omelet prepared with oil or butter. The thing came soaked in the stuff - when your EWs are yellow and there's a pool of yellow stuff around them that's definitely fat. I told her that wasn't acceptable and she attempted to insist that the servers needed to "spray" a little fat on the grill to keep the EWs from burning - sorry but that was not the situation here. Mom ate her oatmeal and then a few minutes later the same plate came back - they had attempted to blot unsuccessfully some of the grease. Disgusted I cut the thing up so I wouldn't have to go through this a third time. When she came back I told her that this was the same omelet, english, fruit. Come on guys get real! Finally a guy came over and offered me the opportunity to get something else so I got cottage cheese - not hungry at this point just livid. Go back? Are you kidding? read more

I love this place! Right away you are eased into a good meal with the ambience and friendliness. The place is modern, well-decorated and clean and the staff could not be more friendly! They greet you as soon as you walk in and can answer any question you have about their menu. And their menu! What diversity!!! Choose from hot dinners to classic jewish dishes to any variety of healthful and bountiful salads. I have to say their selection of salads has to be my favorite -- you will not leave this place hungry after one of their salads! As a gluten free sugar free eater, it is not easy to dine out, but the staff here is so helpful and quite a few of them are clean eaters as well so they know what to order if you're trying to eat clean! The quality of food is good and the taste delicious and satisfying. They have events in the evening for those of you wanting to meet a nice jewish boy or girl, but you will be just as welcomed if you are not jewish. My husband and I always share some challah french toast which is just fantastic and every other breakfast item we've ever had (speaking for my family as well) is always out of the park. Best jewish style deli outside of Boston. Full menu with all the traditional fare and more. Excellent sissel bread complimented a delicious corned beef pastrami and tongue sandwich. Wonderful chopped liver. Pricey but typical of a good deli sandwich in today's world. IMPORTANT NOTE: I read a review about their Falafel - my only comment - you DON'T order Falafel at a deli. That's like ordering chinese in an japanese restaurant. Yes, falafel is related to the Jewish experience but hardly fits in a traditional deli - if you order DELI and true Ashkenzi Jewish food at Zaftigs, you will be very pleased. Not a whole lot to eat on the menu that doesn't have some meat product in it; you'll end up with the hummus wrap or pancakes, both of which were OK. Not special but certainly not bad. The free bagel chips are not that enticing, I wouldn't bother. Pickles are mediocre, which was a surprise at a deli. The meat eaters seemed to appreciate it's uniqueness (there really aren't jewish deli/restaurants this far out in metro west, except for Kugels, which is probably a step down from Zaftigs.) And what is up with all of the pork on the menu; it seems more than most restaurants Why not go full kosher if it is a jewish deli? Odd. I love Jewish deli food, and I keep trying to like Zaftigs, but it's just such bad food. We've tried dozens of different items during the handful of times we've come over the years, and found the food ranges from really bad to just okay. The Matzo ball soup and potato knish are the best options on the menu, everything gets worse after that. Even the desserts are terrible. read more

Decided to try Zaftig's for a quick breakfast. When I entered the restaurant I was greeted by a super friendly hostess. I was seated at the back and ordered a juice and some water. I'm not sure where the water came from but I've never tasted such terrible water. Nothing that tastes that much like bleach could be good for you. After being told the stuffed french toast was a big seller, I decided to try it. The presentation was very nice w/ fresh strawberries and blueberries although it was incredibly tasteless. I'm not sure I even tasted bananas and it was a big mushy mess. There were hardly any customers and I basically had no service while I watched the wait staff eating in the kitchen. The french toast and juice cost about $15 w/ a tip- $18 for a breakfast that was mediocre at best and service that was entirely lacking. At least for breaskfast there are other local restaurants that far outshine Zaftig's. read more

Passover Dinner for 7 catered by Zaftig's Deli in Natick was excellent. I would recommend to everyone that if you don't have the time and energy to clean up and be ready to serve your demanding family, for you run not walk and order from Zaftig's. We ordered everything for matzah balls to you name it. Everything was great and the food was a big hit. The price was right and the quality excellent. We are definitely going to use them again. We have also eaten at both locations and they are equally as good. I prefer Natick because the parking and traffic is easier to deal with. They are my favorite local deli. read more

On a major plus, love the coffee, just wish they came around with refills more often, as I have many times sat there with an empty cup while eating my breakfast. I went to Zaftigs with only mild expectations after reading various revues which were variable in their ratings. I was pleasantly surprised to find no line and immediate seating. The waiter, Alec C., was right there to help us and patiently returned a number of times unitl we made a final decision for our dinners. The food came relatively quickly and was very tasty. We shared a Zaftig Combo and a Reuben, both of which we enjoyed. It was also the first time that I was offered "bagel chips" as a starter to hold us over until the meal arrived. When Alec found out that we were celebrating my birthday, he unexpectedly brought out a celebratory cupcake and more "bagel chips" with cream cheese which he saw that I had liked earlier. All-in-all I thought that it was a very positive experience and I would return for dinner again. read more

I need to first explain that I used to work in my family's delicatessen in Newton that we sold about 15 years ago. We went in with a group of 6 of us for dinner and most of us ordered corned beef, pastrami or Reuben Sandwiches. All of our sandwiches were just ok. Zaftig's makes them properly but the meat doesn't have enough flavor to it. I think I saw on the way out, that the Corned Beef in the case was Boston Brisket Company. I don't know if the pastrami comes from there too. The corned beef was precooked and in cryovac. I know we got our corned beef from the now defunct American Kosher which we got uncooked in big barrels and cooked ourselves. We used the Pearl Provisions black pastrami and had a trick of adding sugar when we heated it. I am guessing there is not much choice in the Boston area anymore as kosher meat companies and delis have really struggled over the last 20 years. I know that in Albany, NY, Old World Provisions makes very good tasting corned beef. I asked for the hot fatty corned beef and it was very tough and chewy. Fatty usually melts in your mouth. My daughter got the Nova plate and they were very generous with the Nova and I tasted a small piece and it was delicious. We got an order of the meat knishes and the an order of the potato and they were pretty good. The meat knish was very different from other meat knishes we have had. Instead of the usual onion and ground meat it was filled with small flakes of barbecue sauced brisket. It was surprising but everyone liked it. The potato were good. I also noticed that a lot of people were either eating smoked salmon plates or breakfast plates at dinner. If I were to go back, I would probably order one of those. read more

I love this place. It is so much of a better option for breakfast then a greasy spoon. The syrup is real, the fruit is fresh, portions are filling, food arrives quickly and the place is clean. They also serve breakfast all day. The service is always good too. They move fast and it can seem hectic at times but they are always available and friendly despite the speed at which things are moving. I went there for dinner tonight and again had a great meal. The salad was excellent and dressing homemade, the gazpacho was fresh and flavorful. My family also enjoyed their meals. My only complaint about the place is that they seem to have a disproportionate amount of peculiar customers dinning there and the tables are close together. read more

We called ahead to ask about tv's and drinks to watch and drown our sorrows on missing out.
