I just wanted to share my wonderful experience at Zak Dental here in Downey. After searching high and low for a dental practice that accepts my mom's insurance, we found the perfect place. My mom had been suffering from intense pain that affected her ears and all the way up to her brain. She needed to see a specialist, and her regular dentist referred us to one nearby in Lakewood. Unfortunately, they didn't accept her insurance, so we had to look elsewhere. She had to undergo three root canals and get three crowns repaired, and although we paid out of pocket, it was such a relief to see her pain finally easing. (Insurance also covered high amount) My mom truly loved her endodontist, Dr. Toosi. He did an incredible job and was very gentle and caring with her. His assistant, Kim, was also incredibly sweet, showing lots of grace, patience, and care. Isabel was also very helpful and welcoming, making us feel genuinely cared for. I really appreciate the whole staff for their kindness. I'm giving this place four stars because, after my mom's treatment, we were told by the front desk that she still needed to see Dr. Toosi next month for one more tooth. We also scheduled another appt for her cavity repairs in a couple of days. However, when we returned for the crown repair, we found out it was already done by Dr. Toosi. I wish they had let us know beforehand so we wouldn't have made an unnecessary trip. (My fault as well, I should have spoken to Dr. Toosi after we left) Overall 5/5 at the excellent work. 4/5 for the inconvenience. read more

My first appointment was virtual and I was a bit reluctant to proceed, but I'm glad I did because everything was accurate and precise. My X-ray exam was really cool in the new digital technology they use at this office! If I could give this 0 stars I would. The service is terrible. The front staff is rude and unhelpful. Very impersonable and have horrible bedside manner. They charged my insurance for services that were not even given to me. They using bullying tactics to pressure you in getting extra work done and charging your insurance for things that are not even needed. When I asked for a refund they initially denied it and it took over a month for a refund after I had to make a formal complaint with my insurance company. Stay away from this location. Even then here's the kicker I had gone here and they told me I had about 9 cavities and needed two root canals and would I would need to pay about $5,000 in dental work AFTER my insurance. I'm so glad I got a second opinion and I was informed that I did not have those cavities and all of the work needed to be done was fully covered by my insurance and I had to pay little to nothing. This place charges you just to make an appointment -- $90 for a basic cleaning. I came in today and dealt with rude attitudes and disrespect from almost every staff member I encountered, except the one who did my X-rays. The dentist couldn't even bother showing up in person and only did FaceTime, and they still charge you a "$90 refundable" fee upfront for a basic cleaning appointment. Whether they actually refund you seems to depend on their mercy. Nobody explained anything properly, plus there's barely ever a dentist physically in this office. Before this visit, the dentist refused to take care of my fallen crown only because it was done at another place. It honestly felt like they were more focused on squeezing every bit of money out of patients than actually helping them. This place has gone completely downhill since my last visit before 2020. The service is terrible, the communication is awful, and it feels like profit matters more than patient care. Please never go to this place if you want better service. read more

Update: I was finally able to get a second opinion. I'm glad my intuition was on point. Being "up to date" with technology means absolutely nothing. My care and "check up" shouldn't come from a man that's not physically in the office or examining me. All the "issues" he claimed I had, including multiple cavities and pushing me to pay $300+ up front was BS. I have healthy teeth and gums. If I had paid upfront and went back to have the work done with someone in person, was I going to be refunded for an incorrect diagnosis? Or were they going to pick and choose random teeth that "have cavities" to just get my money. read more

This place doesn't respect patients time. It doesn't matter whether you have early or late afternoon appointment. One time I had to leave and rebook an appointment because they were running late and didn't have enough time for my kids scheduled checkup. For this instance my only request to this office would be to inform patients in advance, so they don't leave work early for an appointment that ends up not happening! read more

Alguien ha escuchado eso? Es el primer lugar donde te hacen una limpieza en la mitad de la boca y te programan una cita para la otra mitad!! Llamamos al seguro y nos dicen que es mentira que tenemos de derecho a 2 limpiezas al año de TODA LA BOCA OBVIO!!! Son unos ladrones abusivos y mentirosos. Adicional a ello nos están cobrando más de 400 usd. Está bien que ponga mis comentarios de años anteriores, lo que le demuestra a uds y a los clientes que el servio a cambiado. Como aplaudí en el pasado su buen servicio ahora repudio y denunció el robo, la deshonestidad y el mal servicio de ahora. Uds nos están tratando como ignorantes y no supiéramos que carece de sentido que un seguro o aseguradora como dicen acá cubra la mitad o un cuarto de la limpieza de la boca del paciente. Por que en lugar de postear los comentarios positivos que hice en el pasado, nos explica o me llama para aclarar lo que uds están haciendo????? Si respuesta es aún más irrespetuosa con el paciente. Quiero que nos devuelvan el dinero como l conformamos con la aseguradora puesto que el cobro sería por una limpieza profunda y según la aseguradora eso ocurre cuando le duermen la encía a uno, cosa que no ocurrió ayer con la limpieza de media boca. Today I went for my cleaning and Cynthia was my hygienist and she did a great job. I was pleased.

This place has never been the same since COVID. The staff is constantly changing, and it feels like the DDS is cutting costs by doing visits over Teams. They put you in a small room with a TV monitor and camera pointed at you while you wait for the dentist to appear on screen, it honestly feels like an interrogation setup. I specifically scheduled a 6-month teeth cleaning and repeated that multiple times on the phone and again when I arrived. Long story short, they only took X-rays and then told me I'd have to schedule another appointment for the actual cleaning. I can't understand who thought separating these into two visits was a good idea. I won't be returning. Waste of my time. read more

Brought my elderly mother here for teeth extractions and we couldn't be happier with the results. The office staff were all very nice and accommodating (especially Angie!) and can't say enough about Dr. Shalabi! His skills, knowledge and patient care details are outstanding! Single most worst dental office for customer service. This office does not care if you sit in their waiting room one to five hours. After siting in the waiting room for over an hour, and not being appraised, of how much long I would have to wait, i simply walked out. The reception seemed to be more pre-occupied with her personal phone call than to gave me an update on my appointment. If I were to charge them for my time waiting, they would end up owing me money. There is a reason for the appointments or for common curtesy about keeping your clients informed. Our experience at this office was absolutely unacceptable. Last year, the check up and cleaning experience was great. This year was the absolute opposite. We had a total of three appointment just for a cleaning and for a couple of molars to be sealed. They asked us for full payment upfront (which is very uncommon and I've never had to do that, we negotiated only 50%) every appointment was an excuse of why something couldn't get done. They were either understaffed, the notes were not correct and us. The patient are the ones who had to do all the back-and-forth.. Our third and final appointment the experience my five-year-old had was absolutely horrendous. She kept on choking during a procedure due to water and saliva collecting in the back of her throat and no suction was provided. My wife asked medical provider for sometime for my five year-old to recover and was not acknowledged. As my 5 year old kept on choking my wife finally said you need to give her some time at the medical provider threw her tools down and told s staff member give her a referral to another dentist. If we cannot have patience and understanding for a five-year-old, you shouldn't offer services to them. We had a major battle even to try to get the office manager to return our phone call and emails. Emails went unacknowledged every phone call was either she was in a meeting or she's busy. The procedure was not done and we wanted a refund. It took over three weeks to get my refund that I paid upfront. Nobody gave two cents about our experience or the fact that they had a five-year-old that went through the bad experience. W ended up taking our business to a different dentist which the experience was a lot better and the total for the same procedure was half of the cost. Some words of advice if you have children do not bring them here and I wouldn't pay any money upfront for any services, our new dentist didn't ask for any money upfront. read more

Updated review years later. This office has become a scammy money grabbing business. I waited a long time during my appointment to have a virtual appointment over a video call with the treatment planning person, office manager, and the dentist. The dentist went over my X-rays and photos without even being present in the room. How insane is that? Then he put a gum irritation on my treatment plan. This is a service I do not need. It's never covered by insurance, so I would have to pay something like $150 out of pocket for it. When I raised a concern about this, the treatment planning person said that "my condition" necessitated a gum irrigation. What condition? My teeth and gums are fine! They would receive this payment in addition to whatever they get from billing my insurance for the X-rays, exam, etc. I'm going to complain to the insurance commissioner about this scammy scammy place. read more

I am a new patient. Here are the reasons why I won't return. 1. Waited over an hour to get xrays. I had to return next day to get the results, otherwise, i would had waited for another 40min. 2. The next day i was immediately taken to the examination room. But waited for an hour,as i saw my reflection on a huge t.v. after that hour the dentist comes on, virtually. (Why didnt they tell me that it was going to be virtual consult) I could've taken that call at home. Then I was informed by the biller that they were busy and they couldn't do my cleaning on that day. But I was asked to pay $345 for the filling as my insurance doesn't cover it. The biller walked me to the front desk to pay. As a business owner myself, I was giving them, grace. 3. Returned to get my cleaning and fill one cavity. Everything was "done" so I was sent home within 30 minutes. 4. Got home went on with my day and I noticed my cavity was not filled. 5. Call the office and I said when is my appointment for the cavity filled. They said, you don't have a follow up appointment. I mentioned that my cavity was not filled. They replied only the dentist can do that. Which I replied, I know and I specifically asked for my cleaning and cavity to be done on the same day. They apologize. I didn't I went with another provider and now I'm on the hook for $2000. I have been going to Zak Dental since at least 2021. Since then, I hace not noticed a huge turnover in staff - everytime I go in, it is a completely different staff. Today, I walked out after arriving to my appointment 10 minutes early, and waiting 30 minutes past when my appointment was to begin. A person ahead of me also walked out after they did not have her dental appliance ready for pick up. It was supposed to have been ready Friday and was not ready then. Then today Tuesday she came back to pick it up and after at least 20 minutes or more, they could not even find it. Asked her to come back to do another molding. I over heard the staff, the finally found the mold but it was never sent to have the dental device made. This lady also just walked out. This place has not respect for patients time and it was obviously terribly unorganized. Huge red flag when the staff wont stay. read more

April 22,2025 was the best day of the year 2025. Less than a month ago I misplaced my dentures and upon my first appointment I received a cleaning and impressions for replacement dentures, today I completed the final fitting and I was very well pleased with the fantastic service from the staff and Dr. Toossi.
