Very clean and modern place, minimalistic in decor but clean and refreshing. We opted for the Banh Min sandwiches, I did chicken and hubby did meatball. The chicken was far superior flavor profile to the meatball. I asked for 1/2 the amount of carrots which may have helped. Very generous in portion sizes, everything we saw was very worth the price. The Banh was great, though I would have liked my bread much more crusty. (think toasted subway instead of Oh Mai!). The organic soda was a unique experience, fits with the vibe of the place. Zao has quickly become one of my favorite lunch options! I order the salad with rice noodles and half chicken half steak. I do ask for jalapeños and extra cilantro on the side, but they add those for no cost. There food taste so fresh, they do have options to dress your salad with, but I don't, because it has so much flavor without dressing. Went here on a whim with my boyfriend after an afternoon of ice skating. Now I can't get him to go anywhere else to eat when we're out and about! It's set up in the style of Chipotle or Cafe Rio where you decide if you want a bowl, salad, or taco then choose your meat (or tofu!), sauces and toppings. The offerings are very fresh - I saw the container of green beans being unpacked in the kitchen. (They have the perfect amount of crunch!) The portions are big enough to make 1 1/2-2 meals and come in recycled paper bowls! One of my favorite things is their selection of organic cane sugar sodas. Yummm. As I watched the woman put two, three, three-and-a-half heaping scoops of brown rice into the bowl, I thought to myself "this will make a great second lunch." Then, the man next to her asked if I wanted veggies or tofu, to which I replied "both", of course. They have so many different sauces that I had to get a mixture of three, then added the carrots, daikon, cripsy fried onions, peanuts, cilantro, extra jalapenos, and grilled corn. Add an original canned iced coffee with milk and lunch was still under ten bucks. Now, as I shovel the last few bites into my mouth and completely dismissing the idea of breaking it into two meals, I realize I've hardly chewed this whole time. We've been coming to Zao's for a long time and usually enjoy it thoroughly, however tonight was a little disappointing. The employee who took our order was very unfriendly and appeared to be insulted by our presence in their store, (7:30pm) as we were the only two people in there. Our orders are simple and we try to make the most of it but her attitude kept us feeling like we were unwanted and that she'd be happier without us there, as if we interrupted her shift at work. I've never felt so hated in a restaurant for absolutely no fault of my own. Maybe she was having a bad day and that's understandable but it really made our experience a negative one that we talked about all night. I always get the rice noodle bowl with half chicken and half steak, green beans and corn, carrots and daikon, extra cilantro and peanuts, some scallions and jalapeño, and green curry sauce. MAN! The flavors create the most amazing and sophisticated taste on my tongue. It's really a fresh and invigorating flavor and texture combo that I crave on the regular. The spice and mild heat of the curry cause, the crunch and tang of the pickled carrots and daikon, the mild sweetness of the corn, crunch of the green beans, topped with more spice from the jalapeño, freshness of cilantro, and boldness of the peanuts....mmmmmm! Throw in the freshly cooked, tender and juicy steak and chicken, both of which are perfectly seasoned... it's really just a lot for me to even take in lol. The 4 of us have never heard of a joint like this so our interest was piqued. It's basically the Chipotle of Asian food- pick your rice/noodle, meat, veggies & sauce. We each got different things & were all very satisfied with our choices. I'm weird about meat so I tried everyone's (quality control, if I'm going to review) & it was all yummy. If I could give them no stars I would have. We placed 6 orders and they forgot my soup. I get it that happens sometimes. When my mom called them because it was on her credit card she asked for a refund for the soup only. They said they couldn't do it over the phone. She said if she has to come all the way back she wants them to refund and still give her the soup. They told her they couldn't do it. If they refund her card they can't give her a soup. After arguing with her for 10 min they said "what are you deaf". She asked for the Manager number and they gave her the number she had just called. For a $7.00 soup they have now lost all of my families business and I promise you I will tell every single person I know to never go there. Zao is my favorite place to eat! How can a place be so good and yet healthy at the same time? Everything is fresh and flavorful. Every time I go there, it's hard for me to choose what to get because I love it all. Sometimes I'll get a child size bowl just so I can get a couple Asian tacos too! ;) I'm addicted to their Vietnamese coffee! Their fountain drinks are good too, all made with organic cane sugar. The biggest thing is I was not greeted when I walked up to the counter and 2 people were standing there talking to each other. Finally a 3rd person came and actually greeted me. After that things were better. Just a "hi, we will be with you in a minute" would have gone a long way. Otherwise I just stood they confused as why I was not being taken care of/being ignored when there were no other customers. It's pretty darn cool when you post a meaningful review and the brand listens. In this case the brand is Zao Asian Cafe. I've had some up and down experiences with the servers in the past and I complained via Yelp. Since then I've been back to Zao twice (the downtown SLC location on 400) and happily I've can report the food was fresh and the serving sizes were quite ample with the servers actually caring if you are satisfied. I have been to this occasion multiple times, and have always been impressed. The service is always fast and the employees are always friendly. I have also used them for large catering orders. The catering director was fantastic to work with. She was attentive, made sure to repeat my order multiple times to ensure she had it correct, and even called me the morning of pick up to make sure I didn't need to make any changes. she was very thorough and helpful. And to top it off she contacted me a few hours after pick up to make sure everything went well and everyone enjoyed the food. I'll definitely use them for my future catering orders. read more

Today was my first time eating at this Murray location and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had been to one up in Cottonwood Heights before and I was miserably displeased (the staff was rude and couldn't stop talking to each other enough to even get my order right). I almost didn't want to try it again! But today my girlfriends were feeling Asian food so we ended up coming here. I was definitely thrilled. It was a lot better than I had expected due to my last experience! The over all presentation of the food was beautiful. I got the veggie tacos and the tall girl who made it did an excellent job. Not only was the food delicious but the customer service was a step above. The Asian lady (I'm assuming the owner, maybe?) was super nice and complimented my appearance. It was really genuine and it made my day. The previously mentioned girl told me all about the drinks and I fell in love with the vanilla creme! I am really considering coming here more often.
