I've been to a lot of mexican restaurants in my lifetime, and this one is not worth writing home. Let's run through the experience. The hostesses do not greet you when you walk in. They have a table for guests right next to the front door that we thought was the host stand at first. I could get super detailed and picky, but just trust me, the hostesses suck at their jobs. The food is not all that great in terms of seasoning, presentation, and timeliness of delivery. My wife ordered fajitas and they brought out her beans and rice 20 minutes before our entree arrived, which was super weird. They don't carry draft beer. NO. DRAFT. BEER. I don't even want to waste more of my time writing a long detailed review about this place, because frankly, I feel like I'm reviewing a fast food joint or something. You'd be better off going to Taco Bell for Mexican food, eating your grilled stuffed burrito in the car in the Zapata parking lot, then going in for drinks only. You know it's bad when the salsa doent even have any flavor. usually, We're all asking for more and more salsa because we eat it all, but this stuff tasted like the stuff they give you in high school. No flavor. No Spice or heat to it. No Saltiness on the chips or anything. Unless you want to eat nursing home food and pay premium prices for bottled beers you can buy around the corner for the quarter of the price, STAY AWAY. Outrageously overpriced borderline mediocre Tex Mex grub! My cost for a forgettable four item combo dinner with beans & rice and "imported" beer was $25.15. The combo dinner was the #4 "DEL RIO" which for $15.00 gets you one "beef" soft taco which is blandly seasoned hamburger served in a not freshly made flour tortilla, two "beef" enchiladas that are made with same blandly seasoned hamburger, one small not fresh tv dinner-like tamale made with some sort of meat substance, and a small serving of blandly seasoned rice & beans. The $4.75 "imported" beer was a 12oz bottle of Yuengling Lager, a domestic beer "imported" all the way from the foreign land of Pennsylvania. Arkansas sales tax was $1.84, and $3.56 was assessed for mandatory 18% gratuity because I was seated with eight other folks. Obviously restaurant goers in Texarkana Arkansas who voted Zapata's the numero uno Mexican cuisine in town don't know the difference between good Tex Mex and the stuff served at this joint, which is located in seedy decaying downtown Texarkana where you'd better have your head on a swivel when the sun goes down given the number of transients from a nearby homeless shelter that roam the streets after dark. The borderline mediocre Tex Mex grub at gourmet Mexican cuisine prices made my 1st and last visit to Zapata's an unfortunate, depressing, and EXPENSIVE dining experience. read more

This restaurant came highly recommended so we were excited to try it! I was impressed by the size of the restaurant. There are three different dining areas and three bars within. This place is massive! The food here was fantastic! For starters the chips are warm and perfectly seasoned. Salsa is served in a carafe and each person is given a salsa bowl. This is the way to do it as the salsa is excellent and you will surely want to double dip :). We had top notch service which is pretty phenomenal considering the size of this place. I ordered a combination plate with an enchilada, tamale, and chile relleno. Each item was so flavorful and delicious. My friend ordered shrimp tacos and loved them as well. Well, here's what I should've done. Should've just continues down Stateline Boulevard and went to this place instead of going to El Chico. It's located across from City Hall in Texarkana, Arkansas, and is located in an old bank building, which makes it one of the more interesting buildings that I've ever discovered a Mexican restaurant to be residing within. Theming and ambience is nice, coupled with a nice musical soundtrack, and lots of dividers to create different atmospheres in regions inside the building, it's a little adventure waiting to be discovered. Chips came out quickly; salsa was pretty good. Margaritas come in one size: beer stein. Very good, but someone's missing the boat on options here. I ordered Crawfish Enchiladas with rice and beans; so delicioso! The mudbug's flavor popped in to the center of the traditional ingredients. Rice and beans were superb. What more to say? Excellent experience! Let's start with desserts: you want traditional flan, forget it. It was rich and flavorful unlike many flans I have had before. The shrimp brochettes was very good. The shrimp were huge. The San Antonio fajitas were tender and tasty. My husband could have done without the shells on but it was still very good. Most of all, our waitress, Erica, was very attentive.we all scoffed when she didn't write any of our orders down. We were a party of 10. She only basically messed up once and that was bringing a sour cream set up as opposed to a guacamole set up. That was simple and easy to resolve based on all the orders. She cleared plates and drinks quickly and everything showed up in good time. After reading some of the reviews on yelp on the way here, our expectations were clearly exceeded. We went here on a Friday night based on the recommendations from several friends. We are new to the area. The place was packed so I thought it would be great! Unfortunately since it was our first time there we didn't know anything about the menu. Normally that's not a big deal but our waiter was horrible! He acted like it was a burden for him to wait on our table. He was definitely not the type of person you could ask questions of. My husband and I both ended up getting something we were familiar with instead of being adventurous. It was okay but definitely nothing to Rave about and highly overpriced for what we got. Good may be one of the best Texarkana has to offer but overall it is just decent. Small food portions at a high price. No drink menu and margaritas served in styrofoam cups. This is an amazing place to enjoy nursing home/hospital food. I have given it plenty of chances and repeatedly have been served cold stale food. This establishment appeals to individuals that think they need to be "seen". In reality nobody cares where you eat. If you like good food stay far away. This is a local Mexican restaurant -- not a chain. It seems popular with the locals, at least in my 3 visits in the past 18 months it seemed busy, but didn't require a wait to be seated. Chips and salsa arrived quickly and the service has always been fast and friendly. The food is traditional Tex-Mex, but also includes several fish dishes as well. They seem to serve a lot of fajitas, not surprising because they do a good job! One good indicator -- they use fresh avocado for their guacamole. The portion size is good too. The only negative point I noticed -- the salsa seems to be made with canned tomatoes instead of fresh. But it still tastes better than what you usually find. I originally listed my last meal on earth as the Steak Asiago from this Restaurant however...all that changed in one night. The steak was tough with a big grizzle in it...overcooked...and they had the audacity to bring it to the table with NO cilantro on top. Failed to mention they were OUT of this ingredient? This is the signature of this dish...the fresh cilantro. The side dish was sub-standard as well...cold mashed potatoes. I've never had bad service at this restaurant before, however, it was bad enough that I haven't driven the 30 miles in the past few months to check and see if things are better. Good if you like roaches. First review ever. I'm sitting at the table waiting for my over priced food and I start to feel something crawl up my leg. We are new to town and went to Zapata for lunch on a recommendation of a friend. And we're so glad we did! The service was fast and friendly - plenty of smiles to go around - which is always nice. We each had the tortilla soup and split a chicken quesadilla, which was plenty of food. And it was delicious and fresh! Texarkana has many restaurants whose menus come with pictures but hubby and I are busy tracking down as many independent eateries as we can. I'm pretty sure Zapata will become a favorite as we continue to eat our way around the town. Two thumbs up! read more

Best Mexican restaurant I've ever been to!! It's huge, always backed, great service, and the food is always fresh. Every time I go, the owner takes time to personally come over an check on us. Salsa is delicious. Personal favorites are: loco steak, black quesadillas, and the cheeseburger (even though it is a Mexican restaurant- it is the best burger I've ever had. Big and with real cheese. Place was AWESOME!!!! First, the food was exquisite! Crawfish quesadillas were incredibly savory and plentiful. The queso was remarkably unique due to it being made from goat cheese. The overall quality of the food was unparalleled and to top it all off, our bartender Bob was superior!!!! Top notch service and a likeable guy.
