I first tried Zareen's in Palo Alto a few years ago and really enjoyed it, but that location is a bit out of the way for me. I was delighted to hear they now have a South Bay location in the heart of historic downtown Sunnyvale. There's plenty of outdoor seating, which makes it a great spot for a casual summer lunch. We ordered the lamb gosht thali and grilled chicken boti thali, one with garlic naan and the other with rice. The menu notes that the food is prepared "medium spicy," but I'd categorize it as fairly mild. That said, everything was flavorful, satisfying, and cooked perfectly. The lamb was tender, the chicken was juicy, and all the sides complemented the meats well. No notes. The garlic naan was especially noteworthy. It arrived fresh, warm, and incredibly pliable, with the perfect texture for scooping up every last bit of curry. The service had the same blunt, curt energy I remembered from Palo Alto, so don't expect much warmth or hand-holding. Thankfully, the food is excellent enough to speak for itself. I went to Zareen's Sunnyvale on a Thursday afternoon at an odd hour, but it was open and there were still quite a few people dining. I got the chicken sizzler, which was cooked well and tasted good, but the spices felt a bit lacking for some reason. The palak aloo was good too, with a nice creamy texture and aloo that was so tender it kind of melted in my mouth. It paired really well with the garlic naan, and the two tasted really nice together. I've been to Zareen's other locations, and those have tasted a lot better. The last two times I've been to this one, it was a bit lacking in comparison. Service was okay. We ordered a side of raita, and the waiter forgot to bring it over twice when we asked, which was a little annoying, though they were good about refilling our waters. I love Zareen's food! From MV to Palo Alto to Redwood City and now Sunnyvale! Yay getting closer for me :) Their silver spoon wraps are my fav go to - for any beach picnic or party at home. They have such happy and helpful servers - always smiling and providing solutions. We had every little time and we said, can you bring our food fast - oh wow! Fast and tasty with highest quality! The ambiance is incredible- books hanging on the ceilings - outdoor seating on Murphy street. I have not tried their chaat - pani puri / papdi chaat etc. have to save something for next time! This was a family referral and it's Pakastani and Indian Cuisine. The level of heat spice can be mild, so fret not those who fear spices. The service staff are friendly. This spot is the currently most popular restaurant in Downtown Sunnyvale and the non-transit corridor has many restaurants, a lot with sparse support of customers, but we went here for dinner and waited 30 minutes for a table for 2, could have walked into almost every other restaurant with a "no wait" immediate seating, some Indian and Asian cuisine too... so the fact that many are opting to wait for a seat at Zareen's is a testament to their popularity. read more

Got there ~6PM Thursday night and it was bustling with people, both at Zareen's and the other restaurants along Murphy street! We got seated fairly quickly for a party of 2 outdoors. We ordered pani puri (solid), chicken samosas (only comes with 2 pieces, but a must order!! Sooo good!!), and thalis for each of us. I love their daal so much. Garlic naan is light and fluffy too. This was my first time trying Zareen's and my first time having Indian food in a really long time since it's not my typical go-to, but I definitely could see why this place is so popular. We ordered 2 Garlic Naans, 1 fries, 1 chicken tikka masala, and 1 lamb curry and it was good but too much food for 2 people, as the only thing we were able to finish was the naan. In my opinion, comparing the two curries, I liked the lamb as it was spicier, but the chicken in the tikka masala had a nice charred taste to it under the sauce that felt like it came right off the grill. The total came out to $80 with tax and tip, so a bit on the pricier side to be honest. 3.5 stars! read more

We came here late at around 8:30PM and it was quite crowded inside and outside, despite having just recently opened. We were pleasantly surprised by how fast we were seated and served. I did enjoy the thali set, but I think next time I would go for the full entree rather than the thali set (which comes with a smaller entree) The staff came by often to check on us, but it did feel like we were being a bit rushed to leave. We asked for cups & ice. I thought one of the servers was going to spill the lamb & spinach dish on us and the table but they saved it. Whew! They must have been excited to be doing something. It was great that they were very well staffed. It seemed like they had 9 servers/front people and 6 kitchen staff but they were all a bit unorganized. Two were cooking , on the phone, or watching. They all moved back and forth like they were working or just looking busy. I only say this because I was trying to find someone to flag down for boxes and I would watch workers walk by like they were busy, go to the back of the restaurant just to turn around and walk back to the front of the restaurant or they were also busy looking at their black phones, orders? With so many workers, I should have had a good number to choose from but they also didn't look up. But as soon as food was ready in the kitchen, a few would grab them and take them out. Normally, I don't care but we sat close to the kitchen and it wasn't a relaxing area. This place recently opened and it was one of my first times eating Indian food. Samosa (5/5); Super solid to eat with it being packed will filling. The outer part is crunchy so it good balance between texture. Chicken Tiki Masla (5/5): I loved the tomato based sauce as it reminds me of a tomato soup. The place was super crowded on a weekday night at 6PM! Speaks volumes about their consistency in taste over the years. Super happy that Zareen's is now opened in Sunnyvale! Came here on Thursday for dinner and sat inside the restaurant, and it was quite warm with no AC (outside was cooler actually!). However, the food is amazing. We started off with the chicken samosas and it came out hot and crispy. Two toes of chutney were provided to go with it, super yummy. The chicken samosas had a ton of spices and were quite spicy. They were a bit smaller than I remembered these to be though. Still, good! Ordered the grilled chicken boti thali with Garlic Naan instead of rice, and everything in the plate was phenomenal. The curry was so flavorful and creamy. Garlic naan came out crispy and warm and super garlicky! Lentils and salad were great. And the star of the dish, the grilled chicken boti itself, was so tender, juicy, and flavorful. I also got their Mango Lassi - it's not very tart here which I like, but some might prefer it to be more tart. Service was fast and attentive. Our plates were immediately taken away when we finished. Waters were replenished when we were low as well. Definitely would be coming back again! They can get quite busy and they only seat full parties! read more

I was disappointed with our experience at Zareens. The food was extremely oily(especially the puri was over roasted and oily) , to the point that it felt quite heavy and unhealthy. The naan was also unusually thick and dense rather than light and soft. We were hoping for flavorful Indian/Pakistani food, but the excessive oil and heaviness really took away from the overall experience. My kids and my husband also felt the same. I hope the restaurant considers using less oil( yes can be done) and making the naan lighter, as the food could be much more enjoyable that way. This is my second visit( wanted to give it to second chance) and felt the same Both times! The curry is also not that great. I think this restaurant caters to More non desi folks. Very happy to have Zareen's in the neighborhood now! After hearing lots of great reviews, my husband and I checked it out this evening. We asked to be seated near the window and the host was very accommodating. We loved the décor and interior of the restaurant. Prashna was our server and she was wonderful! We appreciated how attentive and friendly she was; we never felt like we had been forgotten with her other tables or that we had to get her attention. She gave us great recommendations and we both enjoyed our meals thanks to her guidance. We each ordered a thali and they were very different but equally good. My husband ordered a lamb thali and I opted for the beef kebab one. We got a 1/2 naan on the side (love that they let you do just a little bit to round things out) and the special chicken samosas as an appetizer (apparently these received Michelin recognition--very good but just be aware you get one per person so order more if you have a larger group!) We also loved the pickle salad that comes on the side and enjoyed it so much that we asked for more! It is a really unique and delicious salad with zucchini, tomatoes, red onions, green apple, and chickpeas. Yum! It would have been nice to enjoy a cold beer, cocktail, or glass of wine with our meal, but we were happy with our mango lassi that we split. I am so happy that a new Zareen's opened in my area. I typically go to Palo Alto if I am meeting up with friends for lunch/dinner or Mountain View if I am just ordering takeout. The atmosphere at Murphy is great for outdoor dining. They have a second hostess stand right outside the restaurant for pickup orders, which I appreciate because it eliminates confusion. The staff at this location are super friendly and can manage the large volume of customers well. Zareen's has the best chicken tikka masala around and it is still a good portion, despite some price increases over the years. My typical order is 1 chicken tikka masala à la carte ($20), basmati rice ($5), and garlic naan ($5). I usually can get two meals out of this order. I like how there is an option to order garlic naan without cilantro on top. Definitely will continue to be one of my regular spots in downtown Sunnyvale. read more

We sat at the back of the restaurant under their newly installed, white-covered shading rooftop, which was a nice touch. Simply amazing. The quality, the service has not been compromised despite her having 3 locations. Today went to the Sunnyvale location for a take away. My 1st time at this location...I was able to easily locate it, because her restaurant was fully packed...during lunch time and the rest of the restaurants had basically no one. Despite my just doing a takeaway, at least 5 waiters and waitresses stopped and asked if I needed anything and did small talk, which was so refreshing, including Zareen herself. I was highly disappointed with the quantity of food we received in our delivery order yesterday. We ordered the grilled chicken boti sizzler, chicken tikka masala, paneer tikka masala, and garlic naan. As you can see in the picture, the small container is the full order of paneer tikka masala, while the larger container is the full order of chicken tikka masala. The paneer portion was barely enough for one person, and the chicken would serve, at most, two people. The portion sizes were far below what we expected for the price. I've always enjoyed Zareen's in the past and have dined multiple times at your Palo Alto and Mountain View locations, so this experience was especially disappointing. The grilled chicken boti sizzler was the only dish that met expectations--it was generous in quantity and tasted great. Unfortunately, both the paneer tikka masala and chicken tikka masala were quite average in taste. To top it off, the garlic naan was sent loose in a paper bag instead of proper packaging, which affected its freshness and presentation. read more

I went with a group of friends on a Thursday evening, and it was expectedly busy. Fan of Zareen's, so this rating is just for Sunnyvale location mainly due to service, kid unfriendly menu and portion sizes. This is an overcrowded under served location. Expect to sit at the table for long even for simple orders. They have a small kitchen thaf seems preoccupied with deliveries and in-house dining takes the back seat. There are other smaller issue too. Also, the prices are similar to other locations but dahi poori plate was served with just 4 puris (see attached pic). This could also be shrinkflation in action as I haven't been to their other location recently. The already short kids menu has been trimmed down further and they carry just one item for kids--maybe it's intentional to deter family with kids. But if your kids have eaten cheese naan at other locations they will be super disappointed. Edit: downgrading it to 1-star since the only thing the waiters double checked on was the payment. After we had already paid and we were waiting for part of the order (takeout ), a different waiter came to try and close out the tab. They didn't care to ask or update on the delayed order. I just left Zareens and watched as a staff member dropped a whole bottle container on the floor, stepped on it and then picked it up and served it to a table without even wiping it or anything. You're not going to take that top off the bottle container and send it through the wash ? You're just going to serve it like that to a customer at the front of the house ??? This was done right in front of the owner and/or manager and they did and said nothing about it. Absolutely disgusting. I'm sorry, but Zareens really needs to train their staff to follow hygiene protocols. This is a new location. We pick up a cup and it's got dark dirty marks on it. We order the fries with spicy dip, we have to ask for the spicy dip. Why when we are supposed to receive service is it this low in standards ? Not good. 1 star for the food but I'm going to stop supporting Zareens. The service is lacking always, and the attitudes of the staff are not good. I'm also afraid of getting sick here.
