I was questioning my friend's decission to try another Mediterranean restaurant (I love Mediterranean food) but the last few places I've been left a bad taste in my mouth. Here it goes! Friday night, a bit busy of course, there was a wait but the turnover was quick. We were greeted and seated promptly. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Our server was great; got us drinks right away, answered any questions we had and delivered our food at a timely manner. Portions were big for its price which ranges from $12 to $14. Fresh and delicious Mediterranean food, in my opinion, best in Tucson! The plates are amazing, especially the Gyro Plate. Can serve one, but enough to share. They moved a couple years ago from a smaller location because they were expanding since the were becoming very popular. The only thing is, it's in an old Mexican restaurant so it has the old decor. The old spot was super cute and cozy, but not much has changed. The food has always been amazing & I will always recommend this little hole in the wall whenever anyone asks for a place to eat. It's a calm environment and the waitresses/waiters have been there for years so you get that comfortable atmosphere. Super friendly staff, amazing fries. Definitely try their tabouli! read more

Being from the Middle East, I alway like to try Mediterranean restaurants when I get a chance. Zayna was a little bit difficult to find but eventually made it. I was pretty hungry and came in solo so decided to go for the grill sampler with the lamb kafta! I was pretty excited for this dishes, comes with the proteins, a salad, green beans, a cucumber yogurt salad, rice and some pita bread. Well the salad came first and it was pretty good. The platter came afterwards and I would rate the dish 7.5/10. The lamb kafta was delicious complimented by the yogurt. The chicken tawwouk and the chicken shawarma were disappointing. The tawwook was a perfectly seasoned grilled chicken breast, I would have expected grilled chicken cubes. The shawarma didn't feel like it was the proper shawarma more like chicken breast cut into tenderloins with heavy seasoning, that in particular was fairly salty but you can compliment them with their hot sauce! No rice is ever like Moms', but this rice was actually pretty good, Kudos! Shirley was my server and she provided exceptional customer service! On my most recent dinner here, December 2019, the food was disappointing: zaatar bread so salty my friends were scraping the spices off the bread and eating just the bread. Their zaatar used to be so much better. When I mentioned the inedibly- salty zaatar bread to the waiter, he said they recently got a new cook. My friend's chicken and mujadara was disappointing. The baklava was dry and stale. The lentil soup was good, however. Downgrading to 3 stars. Has Zayna gone downhill? (My earlier five-star review based on two visits in January 2019: Try the zaatar bread, it's phenomenal! I had the vegetarian plate and enjoyed it a lot. The zaatar bread and felafel were excellent. Had an early supper after touring the Tucson Botanical Gardens. We decided to have some appetizers only, but decided on an early lite supper. Yelp helped us find a healthy place nearby - Zayna Mediterranean. The rating are well deserved. The atmosphere, service, and food were all well above average. The modestly decorated place was teaming with revealing pictures taken by the owner's of his homeland - Damascus, Syria. Our server, Corrina?, was also a delight. Lets get on with the food. We ordered the following, Baba Ghannuj, two combo plates with lamb skewers, and a grill sampler also with lamb skewers, along with beverages and pistachio and walnut baklava for dessert - all for $65 bucks. What a bargain since every dish was very large and full of unique flavors. The Baba was some of the best I ever had - creamy and smoky. The two combo plates had 2 very tasty lamb kifta skewers, 2 falafels (best ever - lite with a little crunch), 2 dolmas, hummus (creamy and tasty), pita and taziki along with a mediterranean salad. My grill sampler also had 2 lamb skewers, chicken shawarma, and chicken shish tawook, some garlic flavored stewed green beans, lightly flavored curry rice, and some pita and a med green salad. The lamb was very good, chicken shawarma was also very good, but the chicken tawook was very dry and lacked very much flavor. The green beans were soft and nice and rice was okay, and the pita bread was a weak point - I have had much better pita. But whose to comment on a place due to its pita? If you are looking for a healthy alternative to American food, I think you will like this place and keep coming back. read more

Very yummy food. I loved the hummus it was very creamy and full of flavor. The Gyro plate was very good from the salad with feta cheese and the rice to the Gyro itself. I have eaten food in the middle East quite a bit spending much time there. This place didn't come close. Bad service, cold unflavored food. I ate pita bread on the ground with locals outside of Baghdad and it was warm and fluffy and light. Here it tasted like it came from a Costco bag. I would not recommend this dinning establishment to anyone. You get tea from a bag. In the middle East your cup comes with a screen and tea leaves of your choice. read more

This hidden little gem is tucked away in the back of a strip mall but they serve up some amazing Mediterranean food! Our favorites include fried cauliflower, chicken schwarma, and lamb kofta. I had high hopes for this place because of all the high ratings, but I wasn't as impressed as I expected. I had a French Chardonnay, which is incredibly rare for me to have, and it was pretty good. I did enjoy the hummus (especially with the pickles it came with). It was slightly too salty and not enough tahini for my taste, but still good enough. I wasn't impressed with the falafels and thought there could be more herbs and flavor in them. To be fair, it is hard to make falafels to be perfectly seasoned and I tend to be super critical since I had some good Middle Eastern food in Boston. I got the gyro sandwich and thought it was pretty tasty, but after I ate it my tongue was incredibly tingly and almost burned like the spices made my tongue hurt. I was going to get dessert but decided against it since my tongue could no longer taste after the meal. read more

First time here for lunch. First let me start with I love Mediterranean and have been to dozens of Mediterranean restaurants all over the states. Tucson is not the Mecca of Mediterranean restaurants and Zayna is pretty good. I had the Chicken salad and my Hub had the combo plate. We started with the grape leaves, they were good but a bit bland. I like mine with more spices and lemon flavor. The Chicken in my salad was very good! It was flavorful and moist. I really liked the home made dressing with the salad! I think the dressing was the best part! My husbands combo plate had Falafel, beef skewers and hummus. The beef was a bit dry but the hummus was good! All and all the restaurant was cute and the food was tasty. I would definitely give it another try. read more

This was my second visit to this restaurant the services good ambience is OK. The place is clean. The food is terrible. The chicken was over cooked and dry. The rice and lentils was like mush. The only thing that I enjoyed was the one falafel I had instead of green beans. My dining companion had the green beans and they look like they've been cooked for a week. I don't understand why so many people say this food is good but I want good Mediterranean I'll go to the place over on Prince and Campbell. read more

This restaurant is a local favorite with plenty of parking and dining space. I thought the food was good decent serving size plates with typical middle eastern food ,Syrian style. The skewer lamb was good and juicy although it was minced and not squared as is the norm in some middle eastern countries, I wish the food was spiced up more it lacked the traditional flavor and spices. Mmmm one of my new favorite restaurant in Tucson. I had the combination plate , my husband had the Giro. The french fries served with the Gyro are more like potato wedges with a spicy zaatar seasoning on them. On my combination plate was the chicken shawarma ,beef kofta, rice, string beans , salad (delicious). We also ordered the cauliflower(fried) appetizer that was served with Tsiziki sauce.The entire meal was tasty filled with flavor and the meats were grilled with perfection still succulent! The salad had a light lemon olive oil dressing which really accented the savory meal. Comfortable family style setting, waitresses familiar with menu and were helpful. Prices moderate. Hidden little gem. Well not exactly little, in fact it's a good size with plenty of seating areas. I love the decor and layout. The staff here is super friendly. This place makes the best Chicken Shawarma sandwich. Everything about it is terrific-the well-seasoned chicken, fresh vegetables, soft pita bread, and garlic sauce. Not many restaurants put garlic sauce on their shawarma and it makes all the difference! It binds all the wonderful flavors together!
