When I walk into the Zeitgeist, I'm always magically transported to a much hipper city than I live in. The smell of good coffee, old books, brick and the slightly sweet and savory smells of the food blend into something I wish I could bottle. And then, sometimes the lingering smell of the oils from the current exhibition on the walls takes it over the top and I feel like I just have to sit down and breathe it in. Normally, this kind of coffeehouse can make me feel out of place, baristas looking down on my lowly decaf like I'm riding with training wheels in the tour de France. But not these coffeeslingers, they are kind, thorough and make my 'why bother' (decaf, non fat, sugar-free vanilla latte) like I've ordered a macchiato caldo in a bowl. read more

Zeitgeist: The spirit of the times... or at least that's what the dictionary tells me it means. And I'm not sure what that really says about this cool coffee shop down near the stadium because, well, it's not necessarily current or modern. It's more classic in the sense of the old school Seattle art-house coffee experience. I tend to hit this coffee house more than any other in the Seattle area simply because of its proximity to the Amtrak station. I go by train. A lot. And often I need to fuel up before departing for points south or upon arrival. The alternatives in the area are corporate and blah. Zeitgeist, on the other hand, makes some decent brew, has a great vibe and a lot of space to chill. Plus they offer something that most coffee houses don't - legitimate, substantial savory options (alongside plenty of sweet/pastry selections). There simply seems to be something genuine about this place, which in the era of often-pretentious single-origin-focused micro-roasters and chain coffee domination is a welcome respite. Found this place walking from the train station. It's a cute little corner place and it was crowded inside so why not. We wanted to order the soup with bread but they were out for the day. How!? Came in out of the rain after the Underground tour. We were tired from not much sleep mixed with a lot of activity that day...and some of us had to recharge for what was to come later. Walking in, the decor was just this side of breathtaking. As Ari C said, "Cafes in SF are NEVER this nice!" High ceilings, nice wood, just overall a very nice feel. And it was warm, cozy. The coffee and espresso drinks were really good, good enough for one of my companions to tell me that she would consider moving to Seattle with me for them. My first cup of coffee on our three day whirlwind Seattle adventure was at Zeitgeist. My latte was pretty solid and paired well with the salted caramel chocolate that I just had to try (what, it was my cheat weekend!) I loved the high ceilings, exposed brick and beams. Hell, I wanted to move in! And based on the large number of people working on laptops while we were there I'm not alone in that sentiment. Service was a bit discourteous, not exactly rude but would it have killed the girl behind the counter to smile? Either way, the coffee was good enough to deal with a little brusk service. Service was a bit slow, and the girl who took our order took about 45 seconds after the person infront of us moved before she took our order because she was busy chatting with the barista making the drinks about how to do his job. A little unprofessional and probably could've waited another minute until after we'd ordered, but I can't fault them too much for this because a VERY delicious latte was made. I thought it took a bit long to get our drinks. It seemed like the girl taking orders could've jumped into the bar and helped the guy making drinks, but she just stood there and chatted with him. I'd go five stars for the coffee. One of the top two best iced vanilla lattes I've ever had. Flavorful, rich and oh so smooth. but I've got to knock off one of the wait and the employee chit-chat. Thank you handy blackberry for locating you: right near the train station, full of outlets to power up my battery deprived blackberry and laptop and delicious sammies! The vibe was just right as I parked my luggage, ordered a Moroccan mint tea and devoured a tomato-basil-mozzarella sandwich. It being almost the end of the day (4ish), it didn't surprise me that they were sold out of most of their sandwiches, which I didn't mind. Especially with the laid back staff was quick to fill me in on what my choices were. Friendly people were the order of the afternoon, from the guy who let me take his table with 2 outlets to myself, to the couple next to me who gave me a great sushi recommendation (a place that they too had found on Yelp!) I wasn't in the mood for coffee today, but based on the other reviews here, looks like this is the first or last stop I'll be making on many more train trips south! read more

I found latte nirvana at a little coffee shop in Pioneer Square called Zeitgeist. I'm not kidding when I say this coffee was amazing. After going into some sort of ecstatic caffeinated state following my first drink I was determined to make the pilgrimage from our hotel to this heavenly beverage as often as possible. According to Google Maps we were walking 1.2 miles for coffee one way. It was so worth it. You have no idea how much I miss it. I think I'm ruined forever now. I need to kill time before a Yelp event one evening and needed coffee. Enter Zeitgeist. It was super close to closing time for them but the employees were still cheerful. I just wanted an Americano to go. While I was waiting for my beverage I did notice how cool the spot is. I'd definitely kill some time here during business hours if the opportunity presented itself. My Americano was delicious. One of the best I've had in a very long time. I wish there were other Zeitgeist locations closer to my usual haunts so I could enjoy their wares more often. If you're close by and need some well made coffee to make it through your day/evening/life then stop by. You won't be disappointed. I'm a huge fan! read more

This place is terrible. I used to snag coffees here on occasion because I work directly across the street, but recently had to stop. For one, the coffee really isn't that great. It's ok. Their pastries are the same. But what really killed it for me was the snotty baristas. I know I'm not "cool" or a hipster, but why must you be so rude to me? Especially when I stood for 10 mins in a long line and tried to pay with a completely legitimate $20 bill. At which point you kept waving it around and holding it up the light, only to declare loudly (for everyone including some of my coworkers in line to hear) that this is not a real bill. And I should take it to a bank. It was the only money I had, so red-faced I paid with my debit card. Then kept my head down as a shuffled away, totally mortified. Upon taking my "counterfeit" bill to the bank I was told (before they even held it themselves) that it was in fact real, just a little old is all. I understand your pen was all dried up, but seriously? What is with the attitude? For a mediocre latte? I'll pass, thanks. The Barristas at Zeitgeist know how to make a damn fine vanilla latte. When I order my slightly girly, overly complicated coffee beverage of choice from most places, it usually comes with either just a hint of vanilla flavor (which I usually prefer), or entirely too sweet (which I hate). When I visited Zeitgeist for the first time, just before the first Thursday art walk in Pioneer Square, I got to experience a sweet vanilla latte that I actually enjoyed! I don't know how they did it, but the barristas put in enough vanilla so I could really taste it, but with just the right balance so that I didn't feel like I was drinking vanilla syrup and steamed milk. A coffee shop that can reach that state of flavored coffee zen is a rarity even in a coffee town like Seattle. Zeitgeist features a set of drawers that look like an old newspaper and magazine storage rack from a public library. Each drawer is divided into a myriad of small rectangular compartments, each about the size of a movie ticket stub. Visitors are encouraged to leave interesting things they've got in their pocketses as a record of their visit. The drawers are full of foreign coins, feathers, small plastic toys, bottle caps and notes. Before I left that evening, I pulled a ticket stub for Snakes on a Plane that I found in my wallet, folded it into a paper airplane and left it in a drawer. Get it... the name of the movie and the thing I folded the ticket into are the same... see!? It's funny like in a hipster kind of way... stupid filthy hipsters... I'll stop now. read more

I've been here at least a dozen or so times per year and this was the last time. There's a Starbucks on the corner that will now get my business, which is saying a lot. I think the coffee here is pretty good,but the service is horrendous. They're pretty rude to begin with, and I got used to that because the place is convenient, has lots of seating and I like the coffee. Today, I made the mistake of ordering food. They asked if I wanted it heated up, which I did since I was staying for a bit. After waiting about 10-15 min for my coffee, the food still wasn't up. I sat down my coffee and went back to the cashier and asked if I needed a number since I saw them on tables. She looked at me blankly, muttered to the person working on the food and started helping other people again. So I stood there a bit and they kept giving me funny looks. I saw them bring out food to a table so I decided to have a seat. About 30 minutes had gone by and the line died down, so I got in line to ask about my food. While I was waiting, one of the girls with a blank stare pulled out my pretty burnt croissant from the toaster and started waiving it around asking her coworkers if they were the ones to put it in. She was snarling at it because it was obviously overdone. I spoke up and said that it must have been mine since I was waiting about a half an hour. She plopped it on a plate and shoved it and a free drink coupon at me and said "thanks for your patience" and walked away. No apologies or offer to get a different food item that wasn't burnt. The free coffee is meaningless because I won't go back. I would have asked them to make new food, but I didn't have another half hour to waste. It was basically inedible. I managed two bites. So I'm basically not eating until dinner tonight because I just don't have the time. I'm super annoyed. read more

Finally, after hearing about Zeitgest for several years now, I had the chance.. NO, 'the honor' of partaking in some of their coffee and sweets yesterday afternoon. First off.. If got to pick what my 'place of residence' resembled, rest assured it would look like either a.) the downtown Anthropolgie, or b.) Zeitgeist. Such a great space! Tall ceilings, brick, lots of light.. it's got a loft sort of feel to it, which I appreciate. The coffee was decent. I had an iced Americano and it was right on par with every other iced Americano I've had recently. Lots of great looking and tasting pastries. Not sure who makes them- they weren't sure who was doing their baking (that's a little weird). The lemon bar was monsterous and perfectly flavorful, and had a dense creamy consistency to it. Lots of nostalgic looking treats to pick from, including glass bottled sodas and 'Valomilk' candy cups candy bar, 'The Original flowing Center candy' which dates back to the 1930's (if you didn't know). Tons of tables to get your Wi- Fi fix at, and they actually serve food- freshly made sandwiches, salads, and soups.. which I thought was cool since most coffee shops these days just deal with the beans and the sweets. I struggled with the 'order shout outs' throughout our stay. Every 3- 4 minutes or so, someone would shout out a name.. loudly. I get that the kitchen needs to know who ordered what.. but there's got to be a better way to go about things.. right? The only other thing that makes this place tough for me is the location. I came in here expecting this to be like all other coffee shops with its hum drum of lattes, cafe mochas and yada yada yada but boy was I in for a surprise. Don't expect too much coz its seems like I am adding some hype. All I want is to set some stage, to rave about their whipped cream. Its homemade and has ESPRESSO in it. Its one of the best things Ive tasted in my quest for good coffee. Any my oh my, that whipped cream on top of a small mocha.. mui fantastico. That just made my day. I'm sure it was half whipped cream and half mocha in a small cup and the key here is small. Coming the next time, I got a large and it threw the proportion off and made all the whipped cream melt too fast leaving me sad and unsatisfied. This has now become one of my favorites coffee place in Seattle for a small dark mocha with lots of whipped cream. Quite unique with that coffee flavored whipped cream :) Definitely a must try. read more

I officially heart this place! I say this not only because they were great lattes, but because they shaped the white/tan foam boundary like - you guessed it - a heart. It sounds cheesy but this is what put them over the 4-star hump for me. Not only do they get an A for effort in the foam work but the coffee was delish. The way I see it, if they put that much work into making my drink look good they probably have the rest of their ducks in a row. I would say that the feinting chick killed the mood, but it wasn't Zeitgeist's fault she didn't get enough sleep last night. (ps I hope you are ok dear). Don't worry Roboto, you are still my hero!! My friends and I have a weekly meet up at a coffee shop early mornings and whoever shows up the latest would treat the entire group to breakfast and coffee. This week it was to meet at this location at 6 am in the morning. We showed up and made a mad dash to the entrance and had a good laugh over our silliness. The person opening shop saw us at the entrance and quickly came out. She blocked the door and said, "We're not open yet, I'm just here to bring the chairs out." Granted they open at 6 am and it was 5:58 am but I would expect a friendlier welcome than something so cold. Even a smile would be better. I understand it's early in the morning but if the service is going to that cold, maybe they should adjust the opening time to an hour later. So we all stood outside and waited for their opening. Obviously no one let us know that we were allow to go in once they were all finished. This left me a really bad first impression. We ordered our coffee and breakfast. The barista was not friendly at all and gave us a little attitude during the entire ordering process. I thought, hey maybe it's just her personality. However, I did noticed that she was extra friendly towards other guy customers and even did some smiles and hair flips. So then I adjusted my thought to the idea that maybe she is extra single. The place was huge and has a really relaxing atmosphere. Also the food and coffee is pretty good. I'm just not sure if the cold customer service deserves another visit. read more

The clouds part and I dance down Jackson Street to my office. This place is ok. I know, I know, there is a lot of love for this place out there....but that is part of the problem. This is a Seattle tourist destination of sorts and the bar staff is some of the most unfriendly I've experienced in Seattle. Seriously. I'm not a big Sbux fan but at least they are trained in the art of customer service. Just an FYI if you are reading this Zeitgeist folks.... You are NOT "cooler" than the clients you are serving. This place is so solid, I'm not sure what to say about it. In Pioneer Square, and the vicinity of true Seattlites, it couldn't be anything but all aces. Coffee is great and expertly executed, pastries are tasty (try the raspberry bar or Russian tea cake - paninis, soup, salads, and Boylan's soda, too), environs are sophisticated and urban-cool, with warm colors, exposed brick, wrought iron, high ceilings, etc. Everything a Seattle coffee shop could ever want to be. The demographic is professional, or at least aspiring, so the noise is low, with appropriate music over it. Belle and Sebastian seems to frequent the playlist - if you're into that. It works as background here. Very appropriate for studying, but only open until 7pm. That and street parking are really the only ick factors. read more

The baristas aren't particular friendly and they have the cooler than though vibe going on (maybe its just a sign that I'm not that cool?!?!). 2.5. This is the definition of a mediocre run of the mill coffee place in Seattle. In a different city, this could easily be the best option, but not with so many great options here. Industrial feeling interior, cold haughty staff, no out door seating, and no unique or interesting drinks to be found. They've decided to take the reductionist approach to a menu, without the increased quality to rationalize it. Came here as some redditors ask I compare their mocha to that of Chocalati: there is no comparison. The mocha here is made with bland chocolate syrup, just like you could at home, with only boring white or dark varieties. At Chocalati they use real melted chocolate, and mix it with all sorts of interesting flavors (including real peanut butter)! If you think the mocha here is good, I urge you to walk - no run - to Chocalati to see what a mocha really can be. read more

Zeitgeist and Umbria, the two shops within shouting distance, nicely complement each other. Zeitgeist is much more in the Seattle vein of coffee shops where Umbria is sleeker, more European. Zeitgeist makes a delicious latte with thick foam and toasty aroma that I dig. An 8oz will run you about $2.35 and it's well worth it. To go with your drink of choice they also offer up a variety of chocolate tastes and baked goods. Here you're more likely to find muffins, donuts, and banana bread than croissants and friands, for those you'll need to head to, yup, Umbria. Also on offer are salads and sandwiches. I haven't tried either but the mozzarella panini being chomped by the guy next to me had me seriously considering second lunch. Zeitgeist is roomy and has ample seating. If you're by yourself sit at the window bar and watch the tourists and bums go by. For groups there's tons of tables and as long as you don't bring your entire graduating class you'll probably be well accommodated. The blond wood and metal decor, illuminated by huge wall-sized windows makes this place bright and cheerful on all but the gloomiest Seattle days. read more

Is great. As if you've seen my other reviews, I used to work at Icon in Fremont. Zeitgeist was it's sister coffee shop, and I still always feel at home when I go there. The coffee is excellent. I see that someone else wrote: Great Coffee (Better than Starbucks). Ahem, is that all it takes to make it great? I think not. Their is a lot of coffee better than Starbucks, in fact I can't believe I am even writing about Starbucks, but not even some of that coffee is good. Sheesh, Zeitgeist shouldn't even be put in the same category. But yes, their coffee is excellent, and having met/known the owner, I know the standards they look for in baristas, which doesn't include Starbucks' pushing of buttons for everything to be done. The space itself, is also pretty damn awesome. Besides coffee they have lunch stuff, and even have events like movie nights, plus great taste in art! The best thing I love about this place, is there is always parking. It might be in Pioneer Square, but I can always find a spot, usually right in front. It's nice if we're out and want a good coffee, knowing it will be an easy place to run in and out of for good coffee. read more

I happened to wander around Pioneer Square with my boyfriend during our trip to Seattle, and I was first drawn to this place because of it's very clever name. I'm not a German speaker, but I am privy to its meaning: "Spirit of the Age", and coffee culture certainly embodies this idea. Indeed, it forms part of the current 'Spirit of the Age'. Zeitgeist, you don't disappoint! I ordered a very large Cappuccino and sat for several hours just reading and chatting with my guy. First, let me just state all the positive things about Zeitgeist that I like and appreciate: + Great atmosphere, cozy space, good location in Pioneer Square. + Good art and music at the cafe. It is a gallery, where artists can submit their work to be displayed on the wall. + The staff seems nice enough, friendly, not your stereotypical snobby Seattle baristas. But Zeitgeist as a coffee shop? Not for me. I keep coming back, hoping that I would have a better cup of coffee than the last. But I keep getting disappointed. On my last visit I decided to get a macchiato, to really get a taste on how they do their milk and espresso at their simplest, basic, unflavored, un-'Caramel'ed, 1:1 ratio goodness. From the moment it was presented to me, I knew it had no chance with me by its looks alone. But maybe it would have a good personality, character, and taste? No. The espresso was over-extracted, making it bitter, and it didn't have the best crema. The milk did nothing to help it. Big bubbles, instead of frothy foam, it was thin and runny. The good thing with espresso or macchiato is, when it's bad at least it'll be over in a couple sips. Maybe I've just been getting the wrong barista, at the wrong time, or maybe I expect too much out of coffee. Maybe I shouldn't have expected so much from a cafe whose website gives no information whatsoever about their coffee. I think there's only one sentence there about coffee, the rest is about art and their space, of which they do a great job. Regardless, I still like this cafe for all the positive qualities I've stated above. But I'll probably go with a different beverage next time, non-coffee beverage. read more

Your best bet for downtown coffee. Zeitgeist is the king of downtown coffee, and all of the employees know it. My experience has been that about half of the baristas on a given shift are friendly, helpful, and the kind of person that makes the Seattle coffee experience special. The other half are looking to put you in your place if you dare step out of line. Avoid the surly baristas and you'll be fine. Though it's in Pioneer Square, this place has the best coffee in the entire downtown area. I'd often wander blocks out of my way for a latte here. I'm not alone in this, either. During the daylight hours you're likely to find the place half full with Amazon.com workers trying to escape office distractions via the free wireless. Don't overlook the pastry selection, either. Though choices are limited, the quality is high and the selection seems intended to complement the coffee. It succeeds. Perhaps due to its location and clientele, Zeitgeist closes its doors fairly early. Don't count on this cafe being open past seven. read more

I enjoyed the Zeitgeist Americano so much that I choose to purchase a pound of French roast for home brew. On Saturday morning I was looking forward to brewing a great coffee for my wife and myself. I opened the bag of beans and instead of a luscious, dark and oily roast I found pale, dry beans that made my Dad's Folgers look gourmet. Brewed in my French press the result was pale and weak so I turned to my trusty Capresso and loaded the gold cone filter to the brim. This did result in a dark cup but still no aroma and no flavor except bitterness. I assumed that as with any competitive and respectable business that Zeitgeist would be willing to make this right. Boy was I wrong. I explained to the barista that I was not satisfied with the product. Unfortunately the barista said that she did not have the authority to resolve this and said that the manager would call me. Well the manager did not call so I came back to the shop to once again try to get my dissatisfaction resolved. Instead I met the owner and explained my dissatisfaction and his only words where 'no one else has returned his coffee'. After about four rounds of this he still made no offer whatsoever to do the right thing. Not even an I an apology. I gave up and said he could keep his beans and my money. I won't be back to Zeitgeist and definitely won't be recommending it to my friends. read more
