This pizza is deep dish style, and the cornmeal flavor and texture is something unique that sets it apart from other pizza joints. It's a bit crispy, crunchy, and meal-y. Served by the slice, half, or whole pizza- our party felt like two slices were very filling. They have some slices that catered to our vegetarian and vegan friends, namely the spinach pesto pizza and the Della salute, which is Zelo's veggie pizza without cheese. We have a mixed-preference friend group and these offerings helped us select this location for our dinner meetup. Fresh ingredients all around for the sausage pizza, as well, really substantial marinated peppers, eggplant, onions, and mushrooms decorated each slice. Zelo was recommended to us as we were trying to get away from our normal routine and so happy we did, we will be back soon! After seeing one of the first review include each of our favorite things (beet salad and pepperoni pizza), we thought our order was set. Once we arrived, we changed the pizza to a corn sausage 1/2 pizza which was amazing! The crust was unique and loaded with sausage. The salad was loaded with beets, yum! The cornmeal crust gives it that extra little texture and I especially enjoy the fact that you can order by the slice and pick and choose what flavors you want to either eat in store or take home and reheat. Ive been coming here for a couple of years now: I have never been disappointed. I abhor beets, frankly I feel like they taste like dirt. That being said, the beet salad is divine. Literally one of the most delicious salads I've had. The corn bread crust, is so savory perfectly cooked, and just amazing. I feel crust is 80% of the delight of any pizza. This crust crushes it. I have had nothing but praise for Zelo's over the years. But today something happened that was disappointing.Last year, our family ordered several of the half baked crusts. They were very good. So this year, my family wanted to do the same thing. So around 1 PM today. I called to put in my order to pick up later in the evening. Whoever helped me, convinced me to call later. Reasoning they could make them quickly. I didn't need to call ahead. So I decided to take him up on his advice, and call later in the evening around 7 PM. When I called at 7 PM, the same person, perhaps, or someone different, I couldn't tell, answered the phone. So after trying to order the half baked crust again, I was now told that they couldn't do that. He said that his boss doesn't want to do that anymore. Even though on their website, there is clearly an option to purchase the half baked crust, suddenly that is no longer an option. It takes a lot from me to write a negative review, especially regarding customer service, which I sympathize their responsibilities greatly. I can understand why they may not want to sell these items anymore. But it was so sudden, this decision. Believe me, I am mature enough to understand the reasoning, But this sudden change in their policy without notice is intellectually dishonest. Zelo's has updates constantly on their Instagram page. But they could not communicate basic policy change clearly and effectively, to their detriment. read more

A local gem in the heart of Arcadia. It was highly recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint. Their pizzas are unique and delicious. The thickness of the pizza crust tasted like it was between thin crust and regular crust. My mom lives up the street, I've driven by so many times but never tried it. My mom always raves about it and tonight we got it for take out. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Beware first timers, the pizza isn't your typical pizza crust. They are cornmeal based so it's hard and crunchy. I think you either love it or hate it. Personally I think it's pretty good but it can be pretty heavy. The beet salad is pretty good too. The beet is nice and tender, pairs together nicely with the leaf, nuts, and blue cheese. Half is definitely big enough size to share if you're eating with pizza. The highlight of the meal is definitely the zucotto cake. It's really smooth and the cake part is really moist. It's pretty pricey though, $10 for a slice. But it is a big slice soooo. The staff is nice and friendly. This place have a few seats outside so you can enjoy the breeze under umbrella, or sit inside with ac and watch outside thru the window. Old school vibe. I wouldn't say I'm a regular, but I've been going to zelos 5-6 times per year for the last 7 years. We live in downtown LA, so it's a bit of trek, but a fun destination. The last trip was kind of disaster. We always go for the half pizza which would more than feed us. But this time the "half" was about 40%. We both looked at each other puzzled when the food arrived. This on its own is no big deal, But the pizza also went from something semi resembling deep dish to more of a thin crust. Shrinkflation? I totally respect prices going up, we will happily pay, But when your go-to meal significantly shrinks??? It's kind of annoying. In fact this was the first time we both left still hungry. This alone wouldn't be a huge deal, but there was also a plump cockroach skittering across the floor which definitely became the deal breaker of the night. I wish it would have been on the other side of the joint, because I'm pretty good at looking the other way on a critter, but my lady definitely made an experience out of our new prehistoric friend... All the way up until someone ran up and squished it giving a nice juicy crunch sound to the end of our meal. Yeah... it's a shame. I hate leaving a bad review on a place I've always loved, but a restaurant owner friend of mine told me that often times the owner doesn't even know that a place is changing, and it's good to leave a review so they have a chance to make some needed changes. The ceasar salad was not a traditional ceasar salad. The dressing was more of a lemon vinaigrette and the croutons used were REALLY SMALL. The vinaigrette was tasty but it just was not what we expected. The pizza, the dough was very hard. Usually deep dish pizza is crispy on the outside and still fluffy at the same time. This dough was just hard and way over cooked. The sauce and toppings were tasty. Our server knew we were in between the pesto so she was kind enough to add a slice of the pesto there for us. Shockingly Hostile and Unprofessional Service This was, without a doubt, the most unprofessional and hostile service I have ever experienced. We came in hoping for a simple meal and a beer. When we looked at the menu, we had a simple question about the cheese on a pizza. We asked our waitress what fontina cheese was like, and her only response was, "It's cheese." She refused to describe it further. We then politely asked if it would be possible to leave it off. This seemed to be a major issue, and she had to get the kitchen involved. A man came from the kitchen, not to help, but to try and convince us to eat a pizza we didn't want. When we decided to simply finish our beers and leave rather than cause more trouble, he responded with "F--- okay" and stormed back to the kitchen. We were then shocked to clearly overhear him and other staff loudly complaining about us, calling us "motherf---ers" for simply not ordering a pizza. The issue isn't an inflexible menu; the issue is the staff's appalling attitude and outright aggression. We left feeling completely disrespected. Avoid this establishment. High prices but overall good flavor from Zelo. We ordered 3 things to go: the corn pizza, spaghetti with the works, and beet salad. I would order the first two items again but will definitely pass on the beet salad. The lettuce leaves were too huge. A knife could have passed through each piece at least 3 more times. The spaghetti sauce on the other hand was so good and I would order this again and again. The ground sausage had a ton of fennel and the fresh basil was so good. My husband thought that the portion of pasta was too little, but I think that it was just too much sauce. In fact there was so much, I boiled some more pasta and was able stretch it into an extra meal. The corn pizza is definitely unique but I don't know if it's for everyone. Firstly it was $33, which is probably the most I've ever spent on a pizza. Secondly it is very sweet from the corn and the roasted red onions. Zelo is a small pizza establishment located off the beaten path in Arcadia. They have a small parking lot off foothill for customers as well as indoor/outdoor seating. They have close to 20 tables at this restaurant and have a fair amount of take out business. The manager / server / chef was incredibly friendly and made it feel like a small family owned business that catered to locals. Don't be fooled by the humble looks of this place-- it has been reviewed and recognized by various outlets around LA including Jonathan Gold himself. My first time here was on a Friday evening around 630. The restaurant was pretty busy with both in person dining and take out so our food took about 20+ min to make. We ordered Caesar salad (has anchovies), pancetta pizza (special) and pepperoni pizza. I would not recommend the Caesar but who comes to a pizza joint for salad anyways? I would however recommend the pizza. The pizzas are pretty filling-- I'd imagine a person would only eat 2-3 slices in a sitting since the corn meal crust is very filling. We got the slices of spinach pesto and the grilled vegetables pizza. Both were outstanding simply because the cornmeal crust was crunchy & well-seasoned. We also ordered the home style vegetable lasagna and by golly, it's the kind of stuff you want to produce at home but it's so nice to have someone else do it! Prices are reasonable for the quality! This is innovative yet homey plating. That's the test of well-honed specialized craft....it feels old, traditional, and yet is surprising in the mouth. It made me genuinely happy. I can't wow their chocolate dessert enough. One of the group got an extra plate boxed up for the next day. It is not sickly sweet. A sophisticated chocolate mousse encased in gorgeous biscuit. Out door seating is roadside but the mountain views are to be appreciated. I feel sad this place isn't situated on an Italian plaza with people watching, but in terms of menu, ingredients, and salad combinations there's nothing in Italy (with their restricted and tradition-bound palate) that could top this. It has a friendly small-town feel without being conservative. Here the authentic warmth of waitstaff is a refreshing change from the commonplace, faux-familiarity of harried waiters. When a hyperactive child came in with a single mother, the lengths the staff went to, to keep him amused and give the exhausted lady a break was commendable. You don't see this humanity, sensitivity, and care--across the spectrum of the modern U.S. social scene--so big props to the waitstaff. The Jonathan Gold review of this place (LA Times reviewer of note whose article is framed and wall-hung inside) is well worth reading. I noticed the art show poster featuring Basquiat he mentioned.
