I almost went 4 stars for Zen for pure convenience, proximity, the fact that they deliver. I did, however, have to pull down that fourth start as i would like more consistancy out of the sushi itself. Everything on the hot food menu will come as expected. Not blow your mind outstanding, but pleasing, and plentiful. Their specialties are worth trying (Honey Walnut shrimp, Steamed Fish...) and they are one of the few places that understands that if you order "Spicy please" you really mean it. The sushi menu has a nice creative touch, but lacks a consistency in product quality. (Personal aside: If you can't get your hands on quality fish just 86 the dish that day, i promise i may be disappointed, but grateful for the care.) They will accommodate large parties and families with kids are no problem here (i have been an accessory to both...and to the staff, sorry about the rice of the floor he's only 3 and kinda messy) Overall Zen hits the spot. If you're looking for exceptional sushi, this is the spot. If you're looking for Chinese cuisine, look elsewhere. This review will be about the sushi since the Chinese food sub-par. From the outside, Zen looks like a diner with nothing special to offer. Once you're in, you'll be greeted by the friendly host or hostess along with the very talented sushi chefs. Try to take a seat to your right in the darker area of the restaurant if you want to dine in a bit of a private ambiance away from families with kids, who usually prefer to sit on the left side... in most cases. When you sit, ask to see the special menu. These menus are written daily and the fish served are fresh caught. You'll find Japanese scallops, toro, albacore, and many other delights on this menu on a regular basis. Try them, you won't be disappointed. From the general menu, the rolls I must order during every visit to Zen is the heart attack roll. It consists of albacore, spicy tuna, cucumber, garlic, and a thin slice of fresh jalapeno on top to seal the deal. If you can take the heat, this is the deal. On a side note, their seaweed salad is also something to remember. All in all, one of my favorite places to enjoy sushi in my back yard without having to drive over to the fancy snob places on the West Side. read more

All i have to say is "meh.." Stopped by after work with my sister. She's a huge sushi fan so we've probably tried out every sushi restaurant in our tiny La Crescenta and the neighboring town of La Canada. She kept saying she wanted to check out the new restaurant that opened in front of Ralphs. Specialty: sushi/chinese fusion. Inneresting.... This place hasn't been around long.. which is evident upon parking. Part of the building still looks as though it is under construction however once you step in, the decors pretty nice. There were several booths next to the windows but we came during the dinner rush and so got a table in the center. Didnt really like it but what can we do.. The waiters are super nice, the guys behind the sushi counters are talkative and friendly, I really have no quips about the service. The menu is huge.. there are the sushi, rolls, and bento boxes. And then 3 pages more dedicated to chinese cuisine. Really wish we came with more people, then at least we could have tried one of everything. But anyway, sister and I go the safe route and order a bento box and a sushi roll. They were edible... not blown away but edible none the less. Would i come back? Of course. We had eaten here last year and really enjoyed our visit. This past weekend we enjoyed a fun dinner on Friday. The place was hopping and we sat in the adorable bar and were able to see some of our favorite sports teams too. My bf liked the crispy Szechuan chicken and I really enjoyed the salmon combo bento meal. Saki was hot and comforting on a cold night. Staff was attentive. We did wait a few minutes for our food as the kitchen appeared to be backed up (most tables were full though) but it was well worth the wait. This is a family and friends favorite in the local area and we will return with excitement! read more

Beef and shrimp dishes were tasty, in particular the honey walnut shrimp, but stay away from chicken dishes. The chicken tasted like it could been old. The egg rolls were delicious. My kids and I wanted sushi so we came here since our other spot was not doing dine in. I'm so happy we did! The Bento combination plate is delicious and the edamame is so good! I've been here soo many times and tried both their sushi and Chinese food. Their sushi is pretty big in size (I have to take 2 bites for each piece), and the number of pieces is standard for Japanese restaurants. Their sushi is okay, but I love their Chinese food better. I always order their Honey Walnut Shrimp. It's different than the standard because they add chunks of pineapple and pieces of white crispy noodles. The pineapple gives the dish a slightly sweeter taste, and the crispy white noodles give it a slightly crunchier texture. The shrimp is also pretty big, and the portion size (also pretty big) itself is decent for its price. The Fried Rice and Chow Mein is pretty standard but tastes really good. The ambiance is great. They have a pretty big selection of sake. Parking is quite easy to find. CON: Service is a hit or miss. Sometimes we get great service. Other times, it's slow (even when there's no one else dining), and the wait for the food can take awhile sometimes. read more

This place is amazing! Some items on the menu are pretty pricey, but some are also not. My mother would usually order a plate of Lo Mein with Egg Rolls and a small order of assorted Wonton Soup. And along with that I would order the Sunset Roll that has spicy tuna and crab inside, then to be lightly deep-fried and topped with fish eggs, eel sauce, and secret sauce (Sriracha/Mayo mixture). This is my go-to sushi roll, it's incredibly delicious and I can't get enough of it! All of these items would total to about a little over 25 dollars for the two of us, which I feel is not bad at all, especially since the Lo Mein can serve 3 people. So overall, this place is the best for clean, refreshing, and palatable food! read more

Why are the yelp ratings so low when this is some of the best sushi in the area? Go on a quiet night and get omikase at the bar....most of the guys there are creative enough to have fun with it and not rip you off. I have had some great sushi experiences there. The Chinese food is alright too. Worthwhile. The one consistent issue I have are the actor/waiter wait staff. They are pretty lazy. My husband and I drove around a while trying to find something to eat before going to go see the Rise of the Jack o'Lanterns last night. We eventually settled on Zen because at this point I was a stark raving zombie from hunger. Best decision ever! I love sushi, and frequent many sushi places in my area, Santa Clarita, but I would willingly drive from here to eat at Zen again. First off, your greeters are sweet and friendly and told us we could sit anywhere and we jumped on the chance of a nice corner booth (also points for comfy seating!) Second, your waitress was so helpful! Since we had never been there before we both asked what sort of sushi she would recommend for us since we have particular tastes. She was able to narrow many choices down to four we knew we wanted. The sushi was amazing. We both enjoyed it so much we kept commenting how we should come back for another date night in the future. I'm already imagining my 31st birthday dinner here! The ambiance in the restaurant is nice too. Not too much fuss, but I was impressed with the menus, thick and not sticky like some places can be. Plentiful choices of both food and drinks. The noise isn't bad either. We were able to have a conversation and not raise our voices to be heard. What other Chinese food place has Chinese, sushi, and Thai food all under one roof? The best of all three worlds. Although eating all three foods at the restaurant is an interesting experience. 99 percent of the time I order take out. Inside its almost like there's three different vibes going on at once which is good or bad. There's the sushi bar area, then the dining room, and over in the corner it looks like a night club. My family and I love it here. My brother always get the orange chicken. I've tried their sushi, it's on the expensive side but is very good. You can sit at the sushi bar and where they make it right in front of you. We have dined in and gotten take out, both experiences were great and they've never messed up our orders. First of all, I love the food and I love that its consistent. The sushi is creative, fun, beautiful and delicious. The entrée selection is varied - from your standard chinese american fare, to more unique and exciting menu options. I've never had a complaint. The staff is excellent. Whoever does the hiring has great judgement - every waiter we've had has been engaging and entertaining. The sushi is just ok, just blends in with many other mediocre sushi places, nothing stands out nor does it make me want to go back....but the one redeeming quality of this place is the online ordering. Kid at the register says, "This could take a long time because it's all sushi, oh except for the soup and the edamame and the salads." Gee, I was under the impression it WAS a sushi restaurant. Then the kid argues with me when I ask for extra wasabi and ginger. Long story short: just shy of 30 minutes to get our food with the restaurant not even half full. Won't be back. Zen is back, remodeled, nicely (for the most part) and is feeding the local population tasty Chinese treats. I only go to Zen for Chinese food, so this will not be a sushi review. My absolute favorite here is the Garlic Chicken and I ask for water chestnuts to be added, because, well they are goooooood. The lunch specials did go up in price, but they did actually reduce them again as well. Not as cheap as before, but sorry, prices can't be $9.99 forever and if you can't afford an extra $2 then maybe stay home and make some $1 ramen? We order delivery every other week or so from here and it's always on point. The food is delivered quickly and accurately, and their staff is always courteous. Tonight, however, they forgot a Thai Tea ordered, so I gave them a buzz and immediately the gal apologized and offered either a driver to come out or a refund for it. I opted for the refund, it was just a tea after all, and thanked her. Well, 5 minutes later there's a knock at my door and they're stands the driver, apologizing again and they comped a future order as well. First time here and I must say the sushi was far better than expected after reading some of these foolish reviews. Service was great, the fish was fresh and not at all smelly or old, the dining area was tidy and clean and since it was 2pm on a Monday afternoon not too busy. I only had sushi. The tuna was off the charts and I will definitely try again, the yellow tail was sweet and fresh not fishy at all, the albacore with the ponzu sauce was tasty AF, and the Spicy scallop nigiri was on point. I finished my lunch with an order of Seared Toro and I've never had seared toro that tasted so good. All in all I give this place 5 stars. I will definitely come again! read more

It is always 50/50 when I go here. Sometimes its a great experience and the food is awesome, and other times is not as awesome. I have to say that their customer service is awesome. Friendly, and always willing to help. I just think they are short staffed often. The other thing is that they have sushi, Chinese food and Thai food. While some people might like that, I feel like some of their dishes are not awesome. I think they should focus. They could be an AWESOME sushi restaurant (have never had a bad roll), but they spread themselves thin with all of these different varieties. I have had a not so great dish twice (which is not a lot considering we work close by and go in often), but in both cases they have offered to take it off the bill - without me even having to complain or ask. There is something to be said about great customer service- that is what keeps me coming back read more
