Great food - I had a few sushi rolls that were well-designed and very tasty. The chicken teriyaki was fresh and the sauce was delightful. So food gets 4+ stars. But the service - slow and awkward. We waited a long time in between drink orders and food orders, and the server was hard to find for our check, etc. The country music was reminiscent of a Texas dive bar but made for a quirk atmosphere. We decided to cancel it and ask for a our check. Although the older woman apologized, our waitress didn't say a word when she delivered our check. I opened it to find that they charged us for the soup for four (8.95) and not soup for two (4.95). Considering we waited about 10 minutes for the waitress to come pick up our check, while she was on the phone, I walked it up to the register and just wanted to leave. I paid and left no tip. My last time going and ever ordering for delivery. I've never once written a review of a restaurant...until now. I've eaten Chinese food across the four corners of the earth, being a professional who travels the world for 30 years, and this was without a doubt the worst Chinese food I've ever eaten. I ordered the Crispy Szechuan Crispy Chicken and the Spareribs Shanghai Style and all I got was 2 plastic containers of over-cooked, dried out meat with no sauce on a bed of cold mushrooms. Chicken McNuggets from McDonalds would've been a better dinner and would've only cost me $5.00. This cost $30.00 and I want to feed to the dogs. I only ordered from them because they're 3 minutes from where I live. If it weren't for the fact that my car is on the blink, I would drive this crap back to them and demand a refund. It's that bad. Since they reopened I'm not sure what has happened. Ordered dinner for Christmas Eve delivery. While the person who delivered the food was pleasant and on time I'm not sure why the food was only lukewarm. Nothing like getting your food only to have to heat it up. Hopefully this was simply because they had a rush but I would expect my food to be hot. Only giving three stars for the person who delivered the food. Last night, a Saturday, wifey wanted sushi and I wanted Chinese so we tried Zen for the first time. We used to eat here on a regular basis when it was just a Chinese restaurant but about 7 years ago it shut down and was remodeled into a Chinese/sushi place. You don't see many of those restaurants. It doesn't look like much from the outside but it's quite nice inside with a full bar, T.V's and a nice looking sushi bar plus a place for banquets in the bar area. While not too busy for dine in on a Saturday night they had plenty of staff working there. Lots of phone in/pick up orders plus they deliver locally. Wifey loved her catapillar roll and I enjoyed my spicy shredded pork. All of the food eaten and they had Sapporo on tap. Service good. The place looked clean. They do a Happy hour 3-6 Mon-Thurs so gonna have to give this a try. No Issues. read more

This has been the worst experience of my sushi eating life!!.. came in for lunch and there was maybe 2 other customers sitting.. it took 15 minutes to take our order.. then after 20 minutes of waiting we noticed that there was no one behind the counter working.. then we asked the waitress and she went and got the chef. Turns out the chef was buying phones from a salesperson while we were sitting and waiting.. then after 45 minutes our sushi came and they messed up the order... the host was extremely appologetic and nice but the rest of the crew were not very friendly... after we got the food it tasted like crap.. Read this whole review before you go to this restaurant. We've lived in the area for around 7 years, and were absolutely thrilled when we discovered that the Chinese food was so good here when they re-opened. And the sushi turned out to be not so bad, as well. A strange combination, but the sushi chefs were native Japanese and they made an effort to get fresh fish. But what was really superlative was the good ol' basic Chinese food - almost as good as a place you might find in NYC. Shrimp in Garlic Sauce, Mushu (some of the best I've had anywhere, period). My Dad loved the mongolian beef, and my brother told me the chicken dishes were excellent, too. Also found the Singapore noodles and the lo mien to be outstanding as well. The soups, quite satisfactory. The sauces delicious - maybe a bit greasy overall, but what do you expect from NYC style Chinese. We started to eat lunch here on weekends, and dinner a couple of times a week. Often coming 3 times a week, while my other family members at least once. And then it happened.... apparently management changed again, two weeks ago. The last two times we went, including last night for dinner, were less than spectacular. The service had been slowly going downhill, but now it is the point of ridiculous. You wait forever for a table, even when they AREN'T BUSY. Seems like they don't want to spend money on a host(ess) so whomever notices you first will seat you - usually the bus boys. The waitresses are always turning over, so even if you go 3 times a week, they don't know you. Last night a new one brought us our soup bowls by holding them with her fingers on the INSIDE of the bowls. She was setting them down that way and I was just hoping my wife wouldn't notice - but she did, and let her know that it was unsanitary to hold them that way. The waitress gave her a look that said "I hate you." and walked away. We asked for some chili oil and an extra bowl for our 4 year old son to have some soup. She came back with the chili oil and I said, "Can we have that extra bowl" to which she responded while walking away "YEAH, YEAH - I can only do one thing at a time!" When I ordered my standard "iced green tea", they told me that they don't make that anymore. They can bring a hot green tea and some ice cubes. (If you have ever had iced green tea, you know that you don't make it that way. Iced green tea is a different kind of concentration than hot.) As we ate, we felt bad for the people still standing up by the door, without being served. The cooks had to bring the dishes out from the kitchen themselves, as they were short-handed, or the wait staff was incompetent. And the sushi chefs had to twice come out from around the sushi bar with towels, to wipe off the tables for customers, because they weren't done properly and were greasy. Yes, a nice relaxing meal.... (that's NY sarcasm, just in case it doesn't come across). The food turned out to be pretty bad, too. Too greasy, and WATERY. Just not as good as it was. And we found ourselves very sad and disappointed - the last thing we want to see is our new neighborhood Chinese place disintegrate. I decided to write this review in the hopes that it will help motivate them to take care of their management issues. We'll wait a while, and try them again - maybe after a few weeks. And I'll update this if I find that they've take care of the problems. -- Update 8/27/10: We've been back 3 times since the review, and the although the most recent time just yesterday wasn't so great, and the service a bit... weird... the previous two times were like night and day, and the quality of the food had vastly improved. I've upgraded from 1 star to 2 and will go back once more to see if I can upgrade further - which I would love to be able to do! -- Update 2012: Place has now pretty much gone downhill. This is my favorite sushi place for many reasons. For one, it is only a few minutes from where I live. Second, it has amazing food and service. Everyone is very nice and the food is nothing like the other sushi places I've gone to. Ummm where to begin? The wonton soup : super salty! I am not kidding our tongues had a salt film that lasted the rest of the meal. Then we ordered orange chicken which was spicy and no where near sweet, and on top of that inedible made with chili paste, chili flakes, and red chili peppers... why?!? Then my father asked for chow mein with three meats and they gave him Kung pao without chow mein .. and once again super spicy. The bathroom stank something awful and had no hot water and a malfunctioning toilet. This is a Chinese Restaurant. Their menu has every single Asian cuisine under the sun but make no mistake this is Chinese. It's important to understand because dishes like Ja Jang Myon are on the menu but it not like when you have it at Korean-owned Chinese restaurants. I only get to visit here when I go to my dentist, who is across the driveway from them, but it actually makes me look forward to a dentist appointment! Their food is fresh and tasty (their to-go service can be hit or miss, but the last couple of times it's been great). I get baked mussels (delish; beautifully prepared), usually an order of dumplings, a sushi roll or two, and/or shrimp in lobster sauce (or some other meal). I'm set for a few meals this way! Came here with a friend and I was very surprised by this hidden sushi gem in the La Canada -Montrose area. Who would have thought?! Stopped in for lunch and very disappointed in the quality of the food. Spicy tuna and the salmon rolls had a strong fishy taste and did not taste fresh at all. The hot and sour soup was gelatinous, lumpy, and not properly heated and the orange chicken was tough to chew. It's been an hour since eating there and I feel nauseous. This place's service is horrible. I've come here countless times with my friends and almost EVERY time they have messed up our order. One time we got delivery. We specifically asked them to NOT mess up our order. What happened 30 minutes later? They messed up our order completely. We asked for extra spicy mayo. Instead they brought extra ginger. Does the word GINGER and MAYO have any resemblance? NO! AND they charged us extra for it. They also did not even give us chopsticks or soy sauce. It was a delivery. The teriyaki chicken had no teriyaki sauce on it. The chicken was dry. We asked for the haneda combination. It comes with 5 pieces of crispy rice spicy tuna and each a piece of salmon sushi, yellowtail sushi, albacore sushi, tuna sushi, and white tuna sushi. Instead of putting yellowtail sushi they put a shrimp sushi. Once again. I don't understand. Prices are way too overpriced for the sushi too. I should preface this review with saying that I am not the type of person to complain to this nature, but this has become inexcusable. I know most people won't read this entire review.. but we just hope that at least the management/ownership will see this and reevaluate some of their staffing choices at the very least. I have been to Zen 3 times now and had very different experiences each time, but each were bad. In general, the place is always empty- we have always been either the only ones there, or maybe 1-3 other tables. The waiters are unfriendly, and unaccommodating. They do not come to check how we are doing, and we have to ask multiple times to be able to get a refill on water. The first time I went here, I called first to see if they had happy hour that day and what time (it was about 4:15 on a Friday). First the guy told me they didn't have it. And when I asked him what days they do have it and what times, he responded with, "Well we do have it today but it's almost over." I asked him what time and he told me 30 minutes. Which was kinda odd since that would put it at 4:45, so I clarified, "5:00?" And he said yes. Keep in mind, I only live about 10 minutes away so we had plenty of time to get there and still order before 5:00. My boyfriend and I weren't sure about what some of the sushi rolls were so we asked the waiter. He didn't even know so he went back to ask somebody. He came back, explained the difference, and we order the one we wanted. **See below Okay the second time there wasn't anything horrible to report. We had the same waiter as before. We ordered the same sushi roll we liked from before, and an order of orange chicken. The waiter asked us if we wanted the regular or large size and we chose regular. The third time we came it was AGAIN empty. We were the only ones this time. This time we had a different waiter than the first two times, and ordered the roll that we wanted. However, they bring us back a totally different role. **We clarified with the waiter that this wasn't what we ordered, so it became clear that the first waiter we had got the different types of rolls mixed up and we were ordering wrong from the beginning. My boyfriend also ordered a sweet and sour chicken, and this time it came with white rice. We thought that was odd considering he did not get that with the orange chicken before. Then we realize the waiter probably gave us the large portion, but never asked us what size we wanted. When the bill came, we were charged for all of the rolls, including the one that was incorrect. When the waiter came over, he said right away "Oh did I charge you for the other role?" He clearly knew from the beginning he had made a mistake and thought he could get away with it. I ordered a cup of hot and hour soup that was shown on the menu as $4.95. It was tiiiiny, and noticed that we were charged $2.95. Not complaining about the cheaper price, but I don't believe that's the size I should have gotten. My boyfriend also asked him about the size of the chicken, and the waiter said that the dinner portions always come with a large (which wasn't stated by the previous waiter) and that WE DIDN'T specify. Like that's up to us?? The one star review is solely to credit the food. The sushi is good, but they are wrapped pretty poorly and fall apart. The orange and sweet and sour chicken were definitely not fresh, but still taste okay. I wouldn't order it again though. Like I said earlier, my boyfriend and I are not the types of people to complain about things. If we like the food we will keep coming back. But I work in the service industry, and even people who don't realize that you should never blame the customer for something- ESPECIALLY when it was your fault. Delicious food! I've been in bed sick all day so I decided to order delivery. Pretty good time frame and the food was nice and HOT. The honey walnut shrimp was the most recommended so I ordered that and it was GREAT. Also wanted some soup for my cold so I ordered the seafood chowder. Delicious, hot and tastes like Asian gumbo! So far they have 5 stars from me food-wise, I'll have to reevaluate when I actually dine inside the restaurant. (Also, pretty good price for a 2 person meal) read more

The food looked like it was cooked the night before and then reheated for our meal today. So dry and hard. Sun Palace in Montrose is much better than this place. This place has a more fun vibe than others in the area because the employees are young, but the food is not consistent. It is really really good sometimes, but ok others. Definitely a good place for a last minute sushi craving, but not my number one go to spot. The best part about the place is that it is close by. If you want to try it out and see for yourself, it is definitely worth it. The hand rolls with soy paper are pretty good. Hopefully you enjoy it and it is more consistent with you!
