We ended up getting: curried lamb and apricot hummus ($16), crispy brussels sprouts ($12), yemenite curry fried chicken ($19) and potato tostones ($12). The chef may be James Beard nominated but the service sure as heck wouldn't be. We arrived at 4:30 when the restaurant was empty and were seated promptly for a special birthday dinner. We had been very excited to try Zhug but our experience was a huge disappointment. As soon as we didn't order a cocktail, the quality of service and demeanor of our sever declined and only got worse as the meal went on. Despite ordering 5 dishes, we felt consistently rushed as we tried to enjoy our meal, with our server at one point grabbing a plate off the table as soon as my partner picked up her piece of bread. It was obvious to anyone who's worked in the industry that our server was more interested in turning our table, rushing us though our birthday meal, and jacking up their tips for the night than providing quality service. We were there less than an hour before our sever not so passive aggressively asked if we were done with our meal yet. The food was fine, the burnt onion hummus, and leeks and feta being the standout dishes of the evening, but for a place that specializes in "small plates" I expected each dish to be a flavor bomb and found the Kofta especially lacking. I was really excited to try Zhug, as it's been hyped on social media recently, but I walked out feeling disappointed. This is definitely a fancier place with dimmed lights and an intimate atmosphere. There is a long-tailed list of red and white wines, and for those who are not wine drinkers, there is a small menu of cocktails available. Food offerings are all very unique and nothing like any place I've dined at before. Out of the dishes that we ordered and shared, the Yemenite curry fried chicken was probably the dish we both liked, but the flavor of curry was just alright. My boyfriend and I were initially overwhelmed by the menu because it is quite large, so we actually looked through other Yelp reviews to make our decision. The Nigella seed and burnt onion hummus was fragrant and flavorful. The eggplant moussaka was packed full of flavor and texture I couldn't fully identify but thoroughly enjoyed. Outstanding! My family went here to celebrate my birthday and we were delighted. When we arrived, we put our names on the list and were told it would be about an hour/hour fifteen. It ended up being an hour forty-five and I was beginning to regret my choice to come here when we were seated. My regret was quickly dispelled when we were waited on promptly and food started rolling out of the kitchen immediately. For a table of four, we ordered 7 dishes and 1 dessert and all left full and happy. We got the lamb and apricot hummus, peanut harissa hummus, leek and feta, falafel, mejadra, pickles, and fried chicken. For dessert we got the glazed strawberries. The hummus with peanuts, the fried chicken, the pickles, and the glazed strawberries were all notable - the fried chicken was the best I've had since before the pandemic. Our server was super knowledgeable, very gracious, and not afraid to guide us in our selections. I wish I could remember her name - she deserves a shout out. They just didn't seem to like our style of ordering lots of food, which I found to be bizarre since they're a restaurant that's all about sharing, but we ordered what we wanted and it was very much worth it. The food came out as requested and despite a tiny bit of attitude all was good. The lamb and hummus is so stellar, the labneh so good, and the carrots are just flavorful and so worth it. I would keep coming back and ordering anything that shows up on the menu, but truly everything is good, and when the sauces and the proteins come together it's perfect. I don't know why they give you zhug in such small amounts if it's the namesake of the restaurant, but I always get more and it's such a tasty treat. read more

Both were fresh and delicious! Everything is served FAMILY STYLE which means you're sharing a bunch of moderate sized dishes. We got 4 which was more than enough for us two. We also had a spicy green ZHOUG dropped off at this point and I thought it was so flavorful and unexpectedly respected the note of ?cardamom? in there! Our first night in Cleveland and my wife found this place which is not too far from our hotel. We called them up and was told there is free parking in a lot right behind Bridgestone tire store across the street. Walking in, it is quite spacious with high ceiling and very modern look and feel. Not realizing what type of dishes or portion size, we were told by our waitress that it is more tapas style where each person should pick 2 selections. So dish wise, we got the grilled octopus which was nothing like what I tasted before. The texture is quite interesting yet very tender for octopus. We also got beef kofte which is comprised of 3 beef meatballs over a bed of onions. Amazing dish. Also got brussel sprouts which again didn't look like the typical brussel sprouts we get from restaurants but taste oh so fresh. Clearly it is no surprise that Zhug is exceptional; Doug Katz is a great restaurateur and Zhug has received great reviews, including from Yelp reviewers. Located at the top of Cedar Hill Zhug is an upscale Mediterranean/Israeli restaurant serving small plates in a comfortable environment. After two visits, once by myself and once with a friend, I can say that this is one of the best restaurants in the area. Parking options are abundant, but will take a short walk. There is a garage in the back with meters or you can find a spot on the side street. Located in a storefront along Cedar Road you will find a clean modern space with a large glass front. Inside is a comfortable simply decorated room; light blue walls with simple decor, wood tables and comfortable seats reflect the Mediterranean feel. The menu is a good sized list of small plates meant to be shared. I sat at the bar and ordered a couple of items. First up I had the Lutinista - spicy eggplant dip with pita. The dip was excellent, slightly sweet with just enough heat to stimulate the tastebuds and no bitterness. The pita was fresh, soft and mild and excellent base for the dip. The Harissa Peanut Hummus was a generous portion of very nice hummus with peanut pieces and harissa seasoned oil; a nice starter which is as much about the texture as it is the flavors. The smoked octopus was a revelation. A good sized portion of octopus slices are perfectly cooked and smoked is so tender, delicious and flavorful. The smoke and the spices give the octopus a pastrami like flavor profile. Served with small pieces of purple potato and saffron aioli the dish is wonderful, rich, smoky and fulfilling. The grilled eggplant moussaka is a good sized casserole of eggplant, mushrooms, lentils and béchamel; creamy, rich and full of umami this is comfort food at a whole different level. Finally the butter roasted shrimp are incredible. Perfectly cooked shrimp in a butter sauce with an overabundance of garlic with toast points to soak up some of the extra. While the shrimp were among the best I have had in a while, this dish is really just a garlic delivery system. Service was attentive and relaxed, the restaurant was doing a large amount of takeout food, yet they took great care of the in-house guests. When the place was full the noise level was a bit challenging, but the energy of the dining room is great. Zhug is an outstanding addition to the Cleveland restaurant scene. Upscale, but relaxed, on the cutting edge of Israeli/Mediterranean style food. Using high quality ingredients, great technique and bold flavors they produce small to medium sized plates of incredibly tasty food. The prices are expensive, but based on the great food and the welcoming atmosphere the value is there. If you haven't tried Zhug yet, you should make plans to go when you can. read more

We FINALLY made it to Zhug. After falling in love with its sister restaurant Amba this visit was more than due and it did not disappoint. Equally to Amba the ambiance, design, and service are top notch. Definitely more light here, but both show attention to detail and extreme care. Moving into the food very well impressed as well with everything we tried - the zhug offer is delicious and powerful, go easy on it the first time. The harissa peanut hummus is very good, but the muhammara with walnuts and goat cheese particularly outstanding. The falafel was very good as well, but the highlights were both the butter roasted shrimp (that aleppo pepper is the real deal) and the saffron and date braised lamb, with really creative crispy sweet potatoes on the side. To finish had the vegan coconut custard, also delicious. The zhug sauce they give you is also really tasty- it goes well with pretty much everything on the menu, and it had a nice kick within the herbaciousness. All of the dishes also come with unlimited naan which is nice. I will say, I'd give this restaurant a 4.5 if I could, only because the naan is not made in house- I'm pretty sure it's commercially made and reheated here. It's not bad, but I would've expected house made bread for 5 stars. When the rest of our party arrived, we sat at one of the tables to the side with a booth. They keep a bunch of pillows on the booth as well which makes the seats super cozy! We all shared the fried chicken, the octopus, the duck fat tostones, labneh, nigella seed hummus, the mejadra, and the turkish chile chocolate truffles. The fried chicken was awesome, octopus was meh, tostones were tasty and were a large portion, labneh luxurious, hummus really tasty, mejadra had great texture, and the truffles were the perfect bite at the end of the meal. Overall, the food is good and will please a variety of palates! On top of the food, service was great. Our waitress at the table was friendly and attentive without hovering, and our bartender when we sat at the bar was awesome- very attentive and had great tips about the menu. I literally keep coming back here. I'm probably here at least once a month, and if I have out-of-town visitors, I always bring them here. The place is just so cute and the perfect vibe to have good food and conversation. Service is always quick and friendly. And of course, the food is always fantastic. The dishes I order every time include the leks and feta, nigella seed burnt onion hummus, brussels sprouts, and the shrimp.
