I have been to zhug before 2 years ago when I first moved here but recently went and was super impressed! The peanut hummus blew my mind, not too strong of a flavor and easily finishable with the unlimited naans (you just have to ask :)) The chicken curry was deceiving, and looked dry but was surprisingly moist and full of flavor! We were fighting over those chicken pieces near the end. The carrots were delicious if you love soft and steamed vegetables like i do. The cod also was a light addition with good flavor to the dinner. The service was speedy- we got lucky and didn't have to wait but normally they don't take reservations so you can end up waiting a while. The place itself is dim and has high ceilings and perfect for a date night or just with family/friends, but definitely on the classier side. There is also bar seating. read more

The sprouts were amazing - they had the perfect balance of sweet and savory. It was also a great portion for sharing or for leftovers! The mejadra was also really flavorful. The crispy onions were delicious - well flavored but a little soggy but maybe that wouldn't be the case if it was eaten immediately. I have mixed feelings about Zhug and here is why: a lot of people LOVE it here and I understand why - the ambiance is great and if you are a fan of Mediterranean food, the Mediterranean-inspired menu offers a fun and unique small plates experience. However, most of the dishes I have tried from Zhug have only been so-so. This might be my own fault - I know I don't love Mediterranean food as much as others, but I do still enjoy it a fair amount, and I haven't expected to be so disappointed. I have been a few times with a friend and we've ordered a variety of dishes, but there's always something that is off. For example, when I got the smoked octopus, it was incredibly oily and felt uncomfortable in my stomach. The lamb in the saffron and date braised lamb was cooked nicely but it was way too sweet. The drinks were unique but almost weird (?), to the point where I couldn't tell if I enjoyed them or not. With all that being said, Zhug has a saving grace: the nigella seed and burnt onion hummus. This is literally the best hummus I have ever eaten. I have ordered it to go just on its own before, despite being $13 for a pretty small portion because it is that good. I could eat it on its own just with a spoon (and with the amount that I will scoop onto a small piece of bread, I basically do). This hummus bumps Zhug up from a 3 to a 4 for me, and honestly if someone asked me to go with them to Zhug I probably would say yes even though I don't love it, just for this hummus. I have also heard that the tahini ice cream sundae is one of the stars of Zhug but the only time I tried to order it their freezer was broken so they couldn't serve any ice cream. Zhug is beautiful and worth visiting if you think you will like the flavors of the menu. Zhug is a great addition to the Cedar Fairmount Business district! While it looks deceivingly small through the glass windows, they are able to seat a decent number of people here. It's a cozy vibe here, with all the throw pillows along the wall seating. The candlelit tables and the light background noise makes it easy to forget that there are other people around (*hint hint GREAT date night/first date spot). As I was looking around the restaurant, the minimal decor really works for the space. You almost feel like you're in someone's living room. There were elements that I'd love to take for decorating my own place. You can and should try one of their cocktails. There is something about their drink menu "zhug no.1, zhug no.2, etc." that feels almost experimental, as if they'll be switching up the cocktails soon so try it now. That, or they're so confident in their cocktail menu that they don't feel the need to label them with some pun just to get a chuckle - hey, I appreciate it. I got the zhug no.1 since it had all the ingredients that I love. It was definitely more on the carrot side, but it was refreshing in a way that I felt like I had a fresh pressed juice, not a rum cocktail. The best way to experience Zhug is to order a lot and share. If you're on a budget, going with 3 - 4 people and ordering a drink and 4-5 plates will be satisfying enough, without breaking the bank. Or let's just make it all about the food and forget the drink and order more plates. I spent about $30, with my group of 4. Zhug features a variety of Middle Eastern food, in smaller plates, that encourages a family style of sharing everything (Middle Eastern tapas? If that can be a thing). In line with the name of the restaurant, they offer zhug at the tables - this "green hot sauce" is made from serrano peppers and A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY. It adds a nice kick to the dishes. They have a great selection of vegetarian plates, but also offer a few meat and seafood options for more substance. Don't be afraid to try their vegetarian options though! My favorite was the nigella seed hummus - I always think about just going to the bar to order that and a drink. Everything we had was amazingly delicious - it makes you think twice about quality vs quantity when dining. They don't have reservations, so plan accordingly and be ready for a wait. You can always grab a drink at Parnells, Nighttown, or the Fairmount if it ends up being a long wait. I'd even plan to arrive even 10 min before you want to get here so that you can find parking. I think they offer valet right in front, but the street parking is iffy in the area unless you park in one of the metered lots (across from Dave's, one behind Starbucks, one next to Nighttown, and also one near Bruggers. I'd probably just cave and pay for one of the meters for a Friday night because it might not be worth the effort to find street parking. I got really excited to see photos of this place and had it starred for my next trip to Cle! First meal i had in Cleveland and it was such a disappointment. I was expecting authentic Mediterranean mezes & flavors but it wasnt the right fit. Pictures are great , the ambiance is lovely and staff is super nice but this is not true Mediterranean food. I have had better options before (Doya Miami or Zaytinya DC) Octopus is like sausage we didnt like it after first bite and the servers reaction was yea its not an easy taste for everyone. I love octopus just not cooked sausage like. The only way to describe Zhug is "exceptional." A friend & I finally went in-person a week ago, & it was the magical sort of meal - & dining experience - that transported us back to those more carefree pre-pandemic times, when nice dinners were a frequent & fun experience. My friend is a vegetarian, & Zhug is a mezze spot, so we split five vegetarian small plates, which I would say was probably one too many. Everything was so good that we ate it all, which meant we were brutally full afterward! We couldn't leave anything behind, though. Her favorite was the peanut harissa hummus, which is an original & unexpected flavor combination for hummus. Also, she lived in Lebanon & I've traveled multiple times to Israel, & we both agreed this was some of the most authentic hummus we've had outside the Middle East. To my surprise, my favorite dish was the muhammara, a chunky, slightly sweet dip of roasted red peppers with local goat cheese, walnuts, & mint. The puffy laffa bread was perfect for both it & the hummus, allowing the dips to shine while providing a low-key delicious base. We were wowed by the honey roasted beet salad, with spiced labneh on the bottom & fried quinoa atop. The fried quinoa was a really unusual addition that gave the dish some texture & visual interest, & a little bit of mint & onion pulled the whole thing together. The beets were cooked so well that they tasted like sweet fruit. The falafel, too, was a work of art, a small, composed dish topped with ribboned carrots, cucumbers, golden tahini, cilantro, & sesame seed. They were crispy on the outside & perfectly soft inside, not dry like falafal sometimes it. The insides were bright green, flecked with herbs, & the accompaniments made for the perfect complement. Understated but no less delicious was the mejadra, made with basmati and forbidden rice and black lentils and topped with crispy onions. I'm not usually much of a rice person - I could take it or leave it - but I would've destroyed this by the spoonful had I not been in a public place, sharing it with a friend. Something about the flavor profile was just SO right. We topped it all off with a cocktail for her & a mocktail for me, both fresh & colorful with thoughtful garnishes, & the tahini ice cream sundae with chocolate sauce & pistachios, a delightful & slightly weird base flavor that transported me to Tel Aviv in summer. I came here excited to try a new place and support a local business. Since they do not take reservations, expect for a very long wait. On a Friday evening I put my name on the list just before 6pm and we were seated close to 7:30pm. You cannot call in to reserve. You must go to the restaurant and add your name to the list. The restaurant will text you a link to monitor how long you have been waiting and your place in line. You will eventually get a text indicating the table is ready. It is extremely packed inside from the bar to all the table around. Since it is cold outside, those waiting for a table tend to hover around the door adding to the crowd. There is no parking lot. So, expect to drive around to find street parking (rare) or pay for a meter. We ended up parking in a lot behind the building just on the corder of Surrey & Cedar. Meters were 25 cents per hour (so not bad, but just keep track of time and avoid a ticket). We finally got seated and were pretty hungry by then. The waitress wasn't friendly nor attentive. We saw a list of vegetarian items on the menu and asked what the most popular items were or if she had any suggestions. The response was a cold 'um, these are the vegetarian items. Yea.' Looks like good help is hard to find. lol Anyway, with no help from the server I decided to check out photos on yelp. Thanks yelpers! Settled on the peanut harrisa hummus and crispy brussel sprouts. The hummus comes with just one large pita. Surprised this isn't sliced into pieces. For a restaurant that promotes 'shareable' plates, they didn't do a good job of making the pita shareable. We were left tearing the pita apart to share. Taste wise the hummus was okay. Maybe the burnt onion hummus would have been a better option with more flavor. Sadly the brussel sprouts are not crispy as advertised on the menu. Bland and needed to be cooked/charred longer. I would not order these again. I took leftovers home and ended up air frying them myself! We also ordered the cauliflower. Again, another disappointment. Imagine steamed cauliflower with some tumeric dusted on it and mixed up. Zero flavor or crisp. Each order comes with the zhug (green chutney). This is probably the most (or only) item with flavor. A bit spicy, but just enough to add to the other bland items we ordered and spice it up. Finally, dessert time came and we got the chocolate chili pepper balls. Do not get these. It is a waste of $8! The waitress slammed the bowl down on our table and walked away. (also off-putting) There is no taste of chili flakes. Comes in a bowl with three tiny balls. Overall, the stars are for the ambiance of the place. The drinks looked pretty. Maybe this is a place only to grab a drink because the food was bland. The decor is chic and sophisticated, but the lighting is too dark during dinner time. The place has potential, but needs some improvements. Tips for diners: - Bring a flashlight so you can read the menu - Do not expect the servers to provide recommendations on food or drink. I've never observed a more jarring mismatch between food and ambience than Zhug. Zhug does not take reservations so if you come on a Saturday night, even at 5:30, be prepared to wait 90 minutes for a table as my partner and I did. Luckily, there's a Starbucks with a fireplace and plush seating just a few doors down. The food is wonderful. My partner and I loved the honey-roasted beets with fried quinoa (satisfying crunch to accompany the juiciness of the beets), lamb and apricot hummus (HUGE serving), grilled octopus with purple potatoes, Yemeni curry chicken (tender and the curry adds a tantalizing, tangy heat), and tahini ice cream that was so thick and rich it was like slicing into a pie. (My only complaint about the food is you're given only one pita for a large bowl of hummus, so you have to ask for more when you manage to flag down your server. Would giving diners two or three pitas at the same time be too much to ask?) Despite the stellar menu, I don't plan to return to Zhug because of its overpowering noise. It forces diners to raise their voices to be heard by their companions, which in turn prompts the restaurant's staff to increase the volume of the stereo, thereby resulting in an obnoxious cacophony that interferes with your dining experience. Combined with our server handing us our check before we'd even finished our meal, you can understand why our patience was worn thin. I'm not going to wait 90 minutes to then be subjected to loud, terrible music and rude service. You shouldn't either. read more

This was one of my first times having tapas, so I was unfamiliar with the concept but enjoyed my experience eating here at Zhug. For those who aren't familiar, tapas is a style of eating that combines many small plates (like snacks or appetizers) into a meal. It can be hard to determine serving sizes from the menu and pictures so, for reference, we chose a total of five plates, finished everything and were very full and satisfied by the end. We also tried three of the cocktails (2 of which were non-alcoholic) and they were all very tasty and delicious. From all the menu items we ordered, my favorite by far was the nigella seed hummus. I wasn't expecting much from just bread and hummus, but the hummus had a smooth texture and the mix of ingredients worked well together. I am unashamed to say that I polished off more than my fare share of the dish. The potato tostones also exceeded my expectations, with the duck fat providing a nice savory flavor. The smoked octopus was underwhelming for me - didn't taste as well-seasoned as the other dishes. It was visually very appealing, and i appreciated the whimsical plating, but it didn't feel like a cohesive dish as a result. The fried chicken and beef kofte were also absolutely delicious. After hearing people rave about Zhug for months since they first opened, we decided it was finally time. I went in expecting small portions and high quality, tasty dishes for the price. The mejadra has a good flavor, but was heavier on the rice and fried onion pieces than the lentils, so it wasn't a very protein-y main if that's what you're going for. The lutenista was yummy but also kind of on the oily side and not mind blowing. The pita it came with was good, though. Zhug sauce itself is also great. Wish they had more options for "main" type dishes to build into a meal, but understand this is a small plates type of place. For COVID, ordering online is easy and they bring it out to the car. We only had a 30ish minute wait time for a 4 person order, which was a pleasant surprise for a Saturday night and the food was ready when they said it would be! My favorite hummus and falafel, it never disappoints. This place is very pretty, chill, and has amazing food. Any kind of hummus you get will be the best you've ever had, the falafel are crispy and seasoned perfectly, the yemenite curry fried chicken was crispy and juicy, served with sweet and spicy harissa honey which was a great contrast to the savory chicken. But the star of the show was the smoked octopus, yes there hummus is the best but the octopus is extremely good, the octopus is super tender and has a great smoky flavor, the purple potatoes were cooked perfectly and soaked up the oil from the bottom of the plate to create a flavor bomb, and the saffron aioli was creamy and floral, which tied the whole dish together. read more

we got take out dinner from here and first off, the ordering- pick up process was seamless!! ordered online with an estimated prep time of 30-35 min, we pulled up to the curb right in front and an employee walked out within the minute and asked for our order, we were on the way home in barely 2 minutes! we received the food super warm and smelling sooooo good! upon unpackaging, all the food was plated neatly even in their to go containers. The rice is topped with crispy onions, so if the drive to wherever you're eating is far, I would suggest popping open the corner of the container to let out the steam to prevent sogginess! My one qualm would be that the eggplant skin in the moussaka was a bit tough/ thick, perhaps unluckily just got an over aged vegetable. Otherwise, the portions were very decent! I think whether you will enjoy Zhug is highly dependent on your personality and what you are looking for in a restaurant. As a relatively introverted person hoping to spend some quality time and have conversation with family, I found it hard to believe how noisy and generally distracting the restaurant was. Most seating is within extremely close proximity of other guests and the music is very loud. I am not hard of hearing in the least and found it very difficult to carry on a conversation at all. To me when going out for an expensive meal, I am generally looking for good food and a relaxing atmosphere where I can enjoy time with friends/family. Nothing about this restaurant is relaxing. The food was generally good, albeit extremely fatty/oily. We ordered 5 or 6 different plates and while they were all pretty good, in my opinion, making food taste good is not particularly notable when you are dumping huge amounts of oil on it. Eating the Brussels sprouts, a dish one might reasonably expect to be a relatively healthy option, felt like drinking canola oil out of the jug. Frankly, Zhug was not for me. I know people with a certain personality who I could see very much enjoying it. The atmosphere is lively and the food generally tastes good. If you are looking for a fun place to have dinner with a big group before heading out for a night of partying, I get it, Zhug is a fun place to start. However if you are hoping to have a relaxing meal and enjoy some conversation with family, I don't think it's the right place. I am not out to disparage the restaurant and I see the appeal in the right circumstances, however I think personalities and expectations will play a big part in whether you enjoy Zhug. read more

Generally good Mediterranean fare, but honestly nothing jumped out at me as particularly unexpected, delicious, or memorable. The space is overall comfortable but quite noisy and very dimly lit, so I can't say I'd return specifically for the ambiance. To be honest, I think the lighting did a disservice to the plating and any visual speak of the god. I ordered 1 beer and 3 dishes which was an ample amount for a moderately big eater like me and the bill was right at $50, so again reasonable without being notably affordable or extravagant. Thoughts on the dishes I had: Zhug - this was brought to the table without a specific order as the signature of the restaurant. It's quite good. The cardamom is the star and a nice texture lens it's application to all of the dishes I tried. Personally I'd expect a bit more punch in terms of spice, but the flavors are lovely. Burnt onion hummus - this was essentially very good hummus. The flavors were nothing extraordinary but they all did work nicely with one another. Occasionally a particularly piquant bit of onion would shine through, and that was welcome. Overall I'd say the texture was the stand out element of the dish. The hummus was smooth and light and the seeds were pleasantly crunchy in the mouth. Served with one flat bread which was soft and pleasant but overall quite neutral. The serving size was generous and the presentation somewhat simple but visually pleasant. Probably could have used a touch more seasoning for my taste. Smoked Octopus - this one is nice. The octopus was very well prepared and had a delicate texture; no rubbery bites here for those concerned. The smoking process imparts a complex, almost porky taste to the dish that recalls other great pairings (e.g. mussels and chorizo). The saffron aioli is good but nothing more and the purple potatoes are a very welcome addition. I did find the octopus to be cut slightly more fine then I'd prefer, and honestly the same with the potatoes. I don't think the serving size necessarily needed to be larger, but some of the bites did. The zhug went a MILE in pairing with this one, and again a bit more seasoning would have been welcome. Pickles - really nice dish that complimented much of the rest of the meal especially well in terms of texture. Crunchy yet tender, these were a welcome break from soft, soft, and soft. The tangy flavors were also a nice addition to the overall composition. Plus, don't miss the tahini sauce served on the side. I nearly did, only really appreciating it apart from the pickles it's actually served with, but it is delicious! Overall this was a pleasant not not notable dining experience. What an odd experience. Heard this was an excellent restaurant. We knew they did not take reservations so we headed over early to put our name in for a party of 6. Told us 1 hr, mayyybe 90 minutes just to be safe. No worries! Came back after 60 minutes, no one else was waiting, four or five empty tables in the restaurant. They told us it would be a few minutes (ten) until they could join two tables to accommodate our party. Half an hour later they then refused to join two tables for "balance". We asked why and they said they wanted to use them for parties of 4 or 2 instead of us. Again, we were the only party present and waiting. Another 20 minutes went by, new parties came in and were immediately seated! They then told us we would have to wait for a party of 8 to leave and they were still enjoying dinner so we again asked them to join 2 adjacent tables. They refused. We would have gone elsewhere if they had been upfront about the wait and hadn't themselves suggested joining tables. 2+ hrs in we eventually left. Four or five open tables still there. Can't say I plan to return. read more

While we were excited to dine with you, we were disappointed with the wait time, especially considering there were many open tables available. We were told the wait would be one hour and we waited greater than an hour and a half. When we asked why we couldn't be seated in the open tables, we were told they needed to hold off for other guests despite how much longer we'd been waiting than others. To add to the challenge, one of our party members was 9 months pregnant, which made the extended wait particularly uncomfortable. We understand that busy periods can be challenging to manage, but we hope you can consider prioritizing guests in such circumstances in the future. read more

The way the flavors are combined at this Mediterranean inspired small plates restaurant is fantastic. Sooo many options for meat eaters and vegetarians/vegans and all of the dishes are handcrafted to perfection. I've been here twice and both times the food was consistent, reliable, flavorful, and fresh. Cocktails are also delicious! Flew into Cleveland for my son's graduation at Penn State. This restaurant was recommended by my seating partner on the plane. Very good food. We started with the burnt onion hummus. Great flavor. It came so fast! Our other plates took forever. There was probably a 30 minute gap between them. Ordered the smoked octopus which was good. Deep flavor. The curry fried chicken was pretty bland. It was hard to taste the curry and was soggy. I expected a crunch. And there was no harissa honey on the plate. We ahead to get in the road so we didn't say anything. I think this could be a good place. We probably hit it on an off night. read more
