This review is for lunch/daytime. This was the first I'd been to Zinc at the Shade Hotel. I've avoided this place in the evening because I know the scene can crossover to douchy and cheesey. I met a sales rep here for a lunch meeting and apparently it was lunch meeting central during the day. I was happy for that because I really wanted to get some solid work done without going to the usual coffee house. ATMOSPHERE We decided to eat inside (lounge area) because it was a too cold to sit outside. The decor was really nice and seemed to be maintained considering the wear and tear I imagine from people drinking night after night. FOOD The food is pretty good here. I settled on the 3 course preset lunch. My sales rep ordered a salad. We were both pleased and would definitely come back for lunch. Tomato bisque soup - one of the better versions I've had in a long time Fish Tacos - again, one of the better fish tacos. moist and flaky. Fish was cooked perfectly. Its just a bit too messy to eat during a lunch meeting. It was the slaw that made it messy. Maybe, next time, I'll have to get it on the side. Salmon Cesar Salad was great. Again, fish done well. Not overcooked. Pot DE Creme - portion size was perfect for such a big meal SERVICE Our waitress was so awesome. She didn't interrupt too much as we were having a meeting. One of our vendors hosts happy hours here for my team... so needless to say I have been here a few times. The place never disappoints... they make good drinks and have a few good beers on tap as well. The food is pretty good too. You definitely cannot go wrong here... except if you expect a lively place with a young crowd. I was the Maid of Honour at a wedding at the Shade Hotel. The wedding sight was beautiful and the reception area was comfy and cozy. The Manager Brandon took great care of us. He was polite, knowledgeable and professional. Great place for dinner and drinks. read more

Haven't been here in a minute. Hours suck, with it being open only till midnight, but that is the cost of doing business here. Zinc is a solid spot for a night out when u don't want to be at the club scene. Not dooshy, can get a drink. Overall, could do much worse than Zinc. Here's my beef on this particular night, Saturday. Was told by manager and server that the new DJ was off the charts. HE WAS ABYSMAL! Our group is not a music snob group by any means, but this was horrendous. Very 2005 with his MJ Accapela Rock WIth Me mash-up. Spun awful 80's and house w/very little hip hop. I know, I know, you don't come to Zinc to dance. But will argue when I'm told "You're in luck, this new DJ is fantastic", I get my hopes up. Music is in the eye of the beholder, and in our group's eye, this DJ blew! A great place for interesting food, impeccable service, well-crafted drinks, and a good atmosphere (especially outside). Not long ago, Zinc brought on a new chef who was formerly the might behind Mucho's amazing plates (now that he's left Mucho, Mucho has gone very far downhill, btw), so Zinc's menu is always changing and adding new ideas. This keeps things fresh. Crab sliders, poke tacos, and ice wine cocktails are definitely worth a try. The wine list is good too. read more

We came here to try the manhattan beach margarita, apparently some locally mixed mixer...pretty underwhelming. We each had one and all 4 were a different color and taste. Happy hour menu is ok. Mini grilled cheese sandwiches are good, but stay away from the artichokes, they tasted horrible... read more

Here to review the Mother's Day Sunday brunch. Honestly it was a bit weak. "Monitored kids section" was just crayons and papers spread onto the lobby table. Food was decent. Champagne included, but not mimosas, so was a little surprised the bill was double of what I expected. Melting ice sculpture was dripping onto the shrimp. But overall I can't knock it too much. It's a beautiful hotel in a peaceful environment, and the people working there are great. They can do better. read more

Just came here for DineLA & was totally impressed! The menu is so worth it and everything was perfect. The zinc salad is a must get, I didn't think a salad could be so good! The ribeye steak was cooked perfectly and had great flavor to it. I've eaten at a lot of places and zinc@shade by far wins me over by not only it's food, but also the service. My server was so attentive and Joe, the general manager, is really the best! Will definitely come back for drinks in the future! read more

I can not recommend this place more! Went to Zinc with some friends for Shade Hour and was blown away. The aesthetic of the restaurant was very hip and fit the young professional vibe we were hoping for. The manager, Erin, was beyond helpful with drink recommendations and most of us ended up trying the Shade Signature drink. We also were very impressed by their wine selection and decided to get a bottle. Lots of California wines that pair really well with their food. The staff is very knowledgeable when it come to pairings and finding just the right wine for you. Over all great service, atmosphere, food, and drinks. Came for Mother's Day Brunch. The food was good and they had a diverse selection of options but definitely not worth the price for a brunch buffet, plus the additional $20/person we spend on drinks. The bill was indicative of much better food and service than we got here. I waited in a long ling to get my mom her 1 glass of complimentary champagne (to say it was half-full would be generous) and also had to ask for coffee three times before it was brought to the table. This restaurant is great. I come here every time I'm in LA to eat breakfast and the food is delicious. Everything is extremely high quality including all the gluten-free options which is not easy to find. The service is also really good and the staff very friendly. My first time visiting, It looked like a cool spot, the server gave us a choice of seating which was on the patio terrace or down on the sidewalk extra seating area and we chose the patio terrace. As we were seated and given silverware the server went inside and came back out and ask my niece and I if we could sit at another table in down on the extra seating area which his voice was so loud that the other people dining looked up to see what was going on, I was so embarrassed. I politely got up and left. I called the hotel manager to make a complaint and he was as rude. I would never recommend or ever come back. read more

Come here if you're not quite a cougar, but don't want to admit that you're close to 40, single, still shop at Bebe, and date swarmy men. Come here especially if you like to pay for pricey drinks that are fortunately made strongly. This place is depressing. Sure, it's pretty... but what happened to aging with class? No, 35,40 isn't old...but you're not 20 anymore, so let go of those times, ladies and gentlemen. Women who dress like their daughters aren't fooling anyone. And neither are the men with Kenny G hair tied back into ponytails. A leather jacket isn't going to help matters. Come here if you're still in your 20's and want to be leered at by older men who are delighted to see you because you're still pre-menopausal. It's a nice location, nice decor, the bar is easy enough to order from even though the place is too crowded to navigate without getting stepped on. To sum it up, it's the kind of place that isn't at capacity, but will make the only 2 people waiting to get inside wait in line outside. That should tell you everything you need to know. read more

The place seemed pretty empty when we arrived for our reservation time on Valentines Day. The staff weren't friendly to us but seemed very friendly to the other couples that were there. After seating there for 30mins without any of the wait staff coming to our table to take our order we decided to leave. I joined Yelp simply to post this review. Awesome stay at Shade and a great time at Zinc. The best things about Zinc and Shade...1) Perfect drinks, 2) Elyse the attentive bartender, 3) Incredible Food, 4) Elyse the creative mixologist, 5) Immaculate hotel room [Deluxe Spa], 6) Elyse with the "you complete me" smile, 7) Eric [an everywhere do everything for customer service manager-type] and 8) Honestly...the whole crew was top notch. It started out with a very romantically-oriented room. Even though I was just there with my Bro to check out the beach for the next couple days since I was in LA anyway, the effort and setup wasn't lost me in regards to the potential for future stays with a significant other...if you get what I mean :). Zinc itself felt sophisticated and trendy (in a good way). The patio had tables with little fireplaces in the middle which was cool. You can totally see why ladies choose this place for outings and ladies-only parties. Guys, this is a good thing. Friday night had a DJ spinning a good range of music and there was a bit of dancing going on here and there. It was busy, but with just the right balance of action, people watching, and everyone having a good time. We sat at the bar about 5pm (yes, I know, early) while waiting for dinner reservations (at another place on the beach unfortunately) and began to explore the drink menu from top to bottom along with a few apps. All of the well-crafted drinks on the menu were well thought out when pairing with food and were really refreshing and tasty. Eric was helping us out with food selections and some drinks early on...then an hour or so later, Elyse walked in and my life will never be the same. Ok, I'm sure it's just my "having fun in LA life", but you get the idea. She not only delivered expertly mixed drinks from the menu and interesting conversation (when she could cuz it was busy), but also had some of her own special twists on flavors that matched our drinking mood and desire for experimentation. I can't say enough about her...go see her Wed-Sat. We actually came back after Dinner and stayed til close, lol. The other impressive thing (to me about the bar, sorry) was the selection of spirits. Not only were luxardo cherries in use, but a special Old Fashioned with a relatively hard to find Angel's Envy Rye was made for us. Put zinc@shade on your list if you're anywhere near LA. My husband and I are regulars at this bar on the weekends and we love it like no other! The service here is amazing, and all of the staff are so friendly and professional. The manager Samantha is very accommodating and helpful to the guests and the staff. The DJs here play fun music, the drink selection is great, the lounge seats are very comfortable, and the bar is busy, but not stuffed with too many people. This is a very fun place to hang out at with your friends or significant other. I definitely recommend it, but remember on Fridays and Saturdays they close down around 11:15-11:30pm. read more

This hotel bar isn't bad at all, the DJ is good and it is packed as it gets later, quite crowded on a Saturday night. A little surprising with the Hollywood club like atmosphere even though it is close to the beach. Sort of weird that it closes at 11:00 pm , and they turn up the lights. There is another bar with dance where ever you fit place a block away that gets the overflow. Crowd is 30's and up. Street parking easy to find. 3.5 rounded down. read more

A few friends and I attended the Tim Hollingsworth pop-up restaurant event at Zinc at Shade yesterday and it was a great way to spend a Sunday evening. The salads, tacos and salsa's were plentiful and incredibly tasty as well as the baja-inspired cocktails. The picante margarita was by far my favorite, you had me at cilantro syrup! The ambiance was beautiful and relaxing, as well as the music which was played at the perfect level to accommodate conversation. The staff was super helpful and in very good spirits and that is MAJOR in the hospitality industry. The food, service and ambiance is fantastic at Zinc Lounge. It has the trendy feeling of a West La or New York hotel lobby, but with all the elements that you would expect from a beach hotel including a very warm and efficient staff. The food is fantastic and it is a great place to relax with a group of friends. I have attended several charity and special events hosted by Zinc and I am amazed at how seamless everything seems to be even when catering to larger crowds. It was my first time here for a b-day get together. I enjoy its laid back feel. Very friendly service. Actually, they were very accomodating. We didn't make any reservations. We all just kinda showed up. But they were very cool about the whole thing anyway! The place is smaller than I thought it would be and it can be LOUD! But the bar food was muy delicioso! I was starving when we got there and it was great to have food that satisfies the palate, as well as soak up the booze. We had the grilled cheese sandwich, scallops, the mini burgers, the trio french fries, and the soufle. Yup, I totally ate and drank (a mojito and pomegranate martini) while enjoying a ring side seat watching the mating rituals of real life Mrs. Robinsons. Love it! True to its form, it is a cougar den. No way folks, at least not for Sunday brunch. While friendly, our waitress lacked the "gene" that a good server requires. Let's see what we had to ask for more than once: Water for the table: Three times Two set-ups: Two times, once after the food arrived. A bagel: Twice - and it arrived with nothing to put on it. I ate it plain. Tea cup filled with hot water had Cafe Latte residue stuck to the inside. Food was OK, but nothing like the multitude of other breakfast joints within a stone's throw. The 20% tip was included because she knew she would have gotten MUCH less. Aside from the earsplitting sirens from the Fire Department located next door, the ambiance is nothing special. read more
