Just a follow up to my review. We received a response - faster than ANY response from your company. It is sad that it was a canned response showing no REAL empathy or engagement. What made me feel obligated to write a review was the painfully long hold times if you wanted to speak to someone at the company. Hold times were up to 3-5 hours at times. In the end, I didn't get my final issue resolved and I just gave up and paid the amount they asked because I couldn't wait on hold anymore. Also, the company is segregated so that it's difficult to coordinate between the shipment side and customer service side of the company. I rarely write reviews but my experience with Zippy Shell made me feel obligated to warn other movers. I hired Zippy Shell for a long distance move and also had them book me movers to load the moving container. On the day of my move, I waited for the movers during the designated arrival time but had not heard from them so I called and was told there was a forklift problem in the warehouse and that I could expect them in the next hour. Two and a half hours later, they had still not arrived nor had they called so once again I called the movers and while on the phone with them someone from Zippy Shell called to tell me the movers truck "broke down" (I've now seen this excuse in other bad reviews) and they would not be coming. I was told that I would not be able to have movers come again until 5 days later and 3 days after I needed to be out of my apartment and that the most Zippy Shell could do was provide a $200 discount due to the "short notice." After speaking with multiple people at Zippy Shell, no one was able to find a suitable solution for me to be out of my apartment by the end of the month and as a result I had to take the rest of the afternoon off of work to frantically call movers around the city in hopes someone could move me on extremely short notice. I spoke with over 15 moving companies and found one who took pity on my situation and said the only availability they could provide was for that night. As a result, I moved forward with the new moving company knowing I needed to be out of my apartment. Due to Zippy Shell company policy, I was told that my movers would not be able to drop my belongings at their facility that night due a 48 hour notice policy at their warehouse (mind you their movers cancelled on me and they were still not able to make an exception). Since this was my absolute only option to get movers to me, I had no other option but to have the new movers take all my things to my parent's garage where everything is now haphazardly stacked. By the time the entire ordeal was over it was after 1am and I had to pay a large amount of money for last minute movers. Zippy Shell customer service was incredibly unhelpful, had no back-up plans in place (they kept telling me that the truck breaking down was an "unforeseen circumstance" but as a moving company you need to have contingency plans in place) and the $200 discount was a slap in the face for the chaos that ensued and the amount of money I had to pay to get new movers. I had just lost close to $1,000 finding last minute movers and felt it was fair that Zippy Shell at least meet me in the middle and provide an additional credit and they wouldn't even entertain the idea of providing more money. It was very clear that they didn't care about the customer experience (especially after asking to speak with multiple supervisors and being told that a supervisor wouldn't be able to help). The irony is when I was shopping around for movers, I decided not to go to PODS because they were more expensive and now I've cancelled my order with Zippy Shell and will be moving forward with PODS. After telling PODS the story, they seemed completely unsurprised and basically said they tried to warn me this would happen. Lesson learned: spend the extra money and go with PODS! I could not recommend Zippy Shell any less. read more

Great customer service! I have used ZippyShell two times. I was referred originally by my realtor who has had great luck referring them in the past.She said you can move with them or just store stuff for a limited amount of time. The first time, I used them for just a week because I was having my garage floor sealed and the garage had to be empty. It was dropped of when they said, asked if it was in a good place in my drive, and picked up a week later. Both times I did not have to be home. This year,I am in the midst of an addition and had reserved another trailer to be delivered in a couple of weeks. Recently, I got a call from my hysterical son that the workers just busted through his wall into his bedroom (that wasn't supposed to happen for 2 more weeks -although, I wasn't complaining that the construction was going faster than scheduled) and that he needed to move out. I called Zippy Shell to see if I could move up the trailer delivery and Dan said that he was really sorry but they were fully booked for the at least a week. I said ok but that I had an issue because my son could now tell me the weather and I didn't mean by looking out the window. Dan was awesome and said since that was the situation, he would deliver one in two days even if it meant he would drive the trailer over himself. Well, I am glad I found these guys! We are prepping our house for showings as we are moving and since the hurricane basically shut down PODS, I needed to find a different vendor. A quick google search led me to an interesting alternative. I had not heard of Zippy shell before. I realized that they were an australian company, and I love the aussies, so I called them up and spoke to a woman named Liz who was exceptionally helpful, personable and informative. The price was a little less than Pods and we scheduled. The guys showed up this morning, and were awesome. They not only brought one shell and loaded it with a ton of stuff in an hour and a half, they were really nice, friendly, took care of our things and just generally helpful. This is a MUCH DIFFERENT experience than I've had in the past with movers. I totally recommend these guys and am looking forward to our second appointment that will be to take the rest of our stuff and pick it up after we sell our current house. read more

Zippy shell has been the single best investment I've made during my moving experience. I've moved 5 times in Chicago and nothing compared to Zippy Shell. They went above and beyond to ensure our complicated move was seamless and even made special accommodations for us at no charge - a rare thing in the moving industry. They are true professionals that go above and beyond! George oversaw our move and was, by far, the most professional, timely, helpful and enjoyable person with whom I have EVER worked. He was early for our move, hands-on (he may have moved more than the movers), courteous and friendly. He packed the Zippy Shell like a puzzle and even ran to get another shell when needed. He also took extra time to scope out our neighborhood in advance to ensure we would have ample space on the street to load or belongings. George also kept our movers in check and told them what to bring next - he has a keen eye for how to pack effectively. We genuinely enjoyed spending time with him and we were grateful for his punctuality, professionalism and insight. We will employ Zippy Shell for every move from here on out! Moving around in Chicago is a very unique and complicated process. Zippy Shell was by far the best option and company I worked during this whole process. From the first inquiry until the Zippy Shell was unloaded and hauled away I was blown away. Josh handled to emails/paperwork all of which was very informative and organized. George who delivered the shell was a major help by showing up early and taking the shell away as soon as it was loaded. He even stuck around and helped unload which was far beyond his job description. The shell itself is quite spacious, we fit a one-bedroom plus den in one 15ft shell with plenty of room to spare. It is user friendly and the company can even order "No Parking" signs and deliver them for you. All and all my experience with Zippy Shell was top notch and I look forward to using them again! read more

Worse company I have ever dealt with. The movers stole alcohol out of my fridge and stashed the empty bottles in my furniture. Caused 5k dollars in damage and refuse to replace the items. They will tell you they have the lowest claims in the industry but, it's only because once they decide on the amount they are giving you which is after a 5k dollar deductible and at a depreciated value they make you sign an agreement that you will not post anything negative about them on Social media in order to receive your money. Never ever use this company! They make you pay an extra 250 dollars to get a 1000 dollar deductible. Which means you pay them an extra 250 to allow them to do 1000 worth of damage. If you don't pay it they can do 5000 worth of damage and not give a damn about it. Stay away from this company! read more

I'm using Zippyshell to move from Chicago to the east coast and my stuff has been sitting in the warehouse in Chicago for nearly THREE WEEKS. It has not budged an inch. Every time I call their "dedicated move coordination team" they give the same canned response: "freight is working on it," "your order is first in cue," "we're working on contracting a carrier to bring it out," "the holidays are an especially busy time of year," "we're aware of your situation," etc. etc. Customers BEWARE: Zippyshell contracts their freight. They do not have their own trucks or carriers, which explains, in large part, the excessive delay in getting my stuff out. The customer care people can literally do NOTHING to expedite it or get it out. "Freight is working on it" is the extent of their help. I am beyond disappointed in how long this is taking. It was guaranteed to arrive in 8-12 business days in the warehouse destination. 12 business days is officially tomorrow and it hasn't left the origin. I took time off work anticipating it would arrive by now and was expecting to start settling in by tomorrow. When and if my stuff arrives I will be filing a complaint with the manager and request for reimbursement. Had I known I'd be receiving my stuff three a half to four weeks later (or potentially even more -- who knows??) I would've paid extra w/ a full-service carrier to avoid the headache and inconvenience. read more

I regretted that I chose Zhippyshell to assist my moving from Chicago to New Orleans, a person called Jason contacted me before my move-in date to get the exact address of my new apartment, I informed him that I'll be able to tell him he address on the 26th of the month. When this date came, I called him dozens of times but he never answers my calls. I checked out from the hotel that I was staying in, and I received the keys of my new apartment, but unfortunately, I had NO answer from Zippyshell when they'll deliver the container so I had to go to another hotel because it's weekend and there's nobody in the warehouse .. The funny thing, I could reach the warehouse and got an update from them regarding my shipment before them! New City Moving recommended Zippy Shell to us for storage of our things for a few months while waiting to close on a place. They did a great job at answering questions and providing info, so I booked them for our move. They posted "no parking" signs for our move, but delivered the pods about 3-4 hours before the no parking went into effect and had to leave the pods down the street. This happened for both our pick up and drop off 2 months later. If you decide to add the no parking signs, I would just ask Zippy to adjust the time to the earliest time they would deliver the shell and not around your move time. You don't need the no parking in effect once the shells are in place. We needed 2 pods packed to the brim for our 3 bedroom move. A few days after the shells were picked up, I was notified by Dale that they had dropped off the wrong type and needed to move all of our things into a new shell. I did not want them moving the items since New City just packed it. Dale assured me that the items would stay in the original container and not be moved. When the shell was delivered 2 months later, I find out that they had moved everything. It just sucks that they never told us. Overall, Zippy Shell clearly fills a need in Chicago. It would probably be great if you were loading it yourself and could take all day. Also, it seems like I'm the only one that didn't have a glowing review for them. They did the job, but I wouldn't use them again. I would've just hired movers to move our things into a storage unit. I thought Zippy Shell would be easier and safer than a storage unit, but at least at the storage unit i would be the only one moving my things. read more

Loved using this service. A few months storage turned into a year but not a problem with Zippy Shell! Monthly payments were smooth with no problems and scheduling pick up and delivery of my belongings were seamless. I would surly use them again and recommend to anyone. P.S. A bit more expensive then "do it yourself" storage but it's worth it. Amazing service for an amazing price. Right from the very first phone call to receive a quote, Zippy Shell was extremely helpful and professional. My girlfriend & I made the move from Chicago to Los Angeles and, like most people, were a a little overwhelmed by the thought of shipping our apartment halfway across the country, but because of Zippy Shell, it made the entire transition super smooth & easy. I interacted with different employees in each city, so I'll wanted to separate my reviews so they all get the appropriate praise... Chicago: My Zippy Shell contact was Marisabell who was super helpful with coordinating the load-in. She kept in touch and answered every question I had in a timely manner leading up to my loading date. As I mentioned, we were pretty overwhelmed with the entire move and Marisabell's professionalism calmed our nerves. Our delivery driver was George who was so amazing to work with. He arrived right on time, was extremely nice, and drove the Zippy Shell trailer like a pro. There was a miscommunication on my part regarding the trailer being dropped off in my back alley way, but George was extremely patient, super easy to work with, and totally understanding. Not transparent about cost, will not offer online quotes. After a online form, a slew of marketing emails, and a phone call, quoted me $2100 door-to-door with no moving assistance. Are you kidding me? Two UBoxes (150% of the space) for the same trip were $1200 door-to-door. One UBox (75% the space, but all I needed) $800. Read all the negative reviews! If they were lower cost than UHaul, it might be worth it. UPack also seemed a bit cheaper than UHaul (couldn't deliver door-to-door to my destination). read more

We used ZippyShell for a long distance move out of Chicago. I chose this company over several others due to the promising reviews but primarily the attractive quote. Here are the big pointers I'd give anyone looking to use Zippy: 1. Make sure you have everything in writing - if you are using them for packing, make a detailed inventory and have Zippy acknowledge it. This information is NOT on the contract you sign, so one has to send an email with the particular items so they can agree to it all. 2. Zippy oversells their containers - they are small. Compare them to a U-haul or Penske and their recommendations for the size vis-a-vis number of rooms. Yes the containers are like a cage and seemingly fit more but a large container cannot comfortably fit 2 bedrooms even if you are having it professionally packed. According to our packing/loading company, this is a routine occurrence with Zippy. I'd had a detailed walk through of my 2 bedroom condo (on my request, and after already signing the contract) but the stuff STILL DIDN'T FIT. Zippy did right by me, but you don't want the headache and the endless phone conversations arguing. This is truly the main reason I wouldn't use Zippy again. Why undersell in the first place? Just tell me I would need two containers and I can make an informed decision on who I hire for my move. 3. Don't expect constant communication/updates/check-ins from your move coordinator. I read a ton of reviews of this company across geographies so this experience may really depend on the move coordinator you are assigned but mine only responded to my requests and never really took any initiative - not even to tell me the ETA of my containers. 4. Expect to be nickle and dimed to death. The packing/loading company Zippy hired for us - New City Moving - was great, but as another reviewer mentions, the packaging material was apparently extra, and you had to pay for tape, and boxes and whatnot. I had done a thorough #1, so I just showed them the email and let Zippy and New City figure it out. Overall, looking at the bigger picture - our stuff arrived with minimal breakage and on the higher end of the moving time estimate I was given. I'm okay with that. Just work out the kinks, be honest, CONSISTENT, and transparent - and you've got yourself a company with promise. Oh one last thing, Zippy doesn't do much by way of letting you sign off when the containers are ready to be hauled out of your place. On both sides of our moves, our containers were taken out without a final sign off from us or even a notification. I didn't find that very reassuring. read more

They dropped off our container on time-even early, but the movers come separately, which we were not made aware of. We were told that we were scheduled for the morning, but the movers weren't scheduled to arrive until noon, which is decidedly not morning. They were contracted from a separate moving company (New City Movers), and they were great apart from the fact that they expected us to pay for their labor and for their materials (shrink wrap, pads) which they started using but never told us that we would be charged. It was very difficult to get ahold of anyone at Zippy Shell-all of the moving coordinators were busy when we called (several times) and we were waiting on hold. Our assigned moving coordinator was nowhere to be found; we never heard from her or could contact her after her initial contact. One of their selling points is that you get a dedicated moving coordinator. This was most unhelpful. They said we could access our container while it is in storage, but the warehouse where it is located is only open 8-4 during the week, and not on weekends. Since those are working hours, I would have to take a vacation day to get into my container?! Very inconvenient. read more

I've intended to write this review for a couple of years and shame on me for procrastinating! George from Zippy Shell is awesome. Every November he comes out to del my pod with my many many Christmas decorations. He maneuvers his way down the extremely narrow alley.....naturally I'm at the very end! He is alway smiling and happy even knowing the work that's ahead. He helps me unload all the crates and trees...he actually does most of the work. He comes back in January...usually in terrible cold and nasty snow and we start the process of reloading. Living in Lincoln Park and having limited storage I can't possibly imagine a better option for storing all my decorations. I would highly recommend Zippy Shell and depending on where you live I would definitely ask for George!!!! read more

So Far I have had a great experience with Zippy Shell. I had ordered the larger box and I was surprised on how much I was able to fit in. I like the fact that they only allow you to keep the trailer at your residence for a day, so it forces you pack faster and you don't have the thing sitting in the front of your house for weeks on end like other storage companies do. We stored our goods at the Itasca warehouse before shipping out long distance with them. Phone customer service at Corporate was very good and the people we worked with when we had to stop at the warehouse to add some items were super helpful and friendly. Kudos to manager Sherrie and to Kevin Schlutt, a driver who helped us repack our zippy shell in a much more efficient and secure manner when he saw our contents had shifted. Absolutely horrible to deal with! Has been such a Nightmare!! Wish somebody would have just contacted us instead of waiting weeks on end of countless phone calls and emails trying to reach out to Zippy Shell. We were just trying to locate where our stuff was being stored. Once we would get a hold of somebody they cannot find any records or location and we will be told that they would contact us back once they found out information about her stuff. No one knew anything and after a couple of months of finally locating the both of the shells, they still wanted to charge us hundreds of dollars. And let me tell you we already paid over $6000 pre-paid to have them shipped when we wanted. They charged us an extra couple thousand dollars and lost her stuff. It's still in dispute and we still do not have our stuff which in two days will be charged another monthly fee for there mistakes. We just want our stuff delivered to our house and have our personal belongings back. How can you store and say it's in one location and then be across the country stored in another location?? They are extremely disorganized and nothing professional about them. I am extremely dissatisfied in this company and I would look at other companies before considering zippy shell!!! George, our driver who dropped off the Zippy Shell, was fantastic. We had two Zippy Shells for our move. George organized with our third party movers to coordinate when each of the Shells would be dropped off to make sure that our movers wouldn't have to sit around waiting for the second Shell to be delivered. Zippy Shell is a great concept and George, the manager of the Chicago warehouse, was fantastic to work with but there were some basic communication problems with Zippy Shell corporate. I didn't realize that they'd do in-home estimates. This might have prompted me to get rid of more things and avoid having to enlist a second shell for my 2,100 mile move across the country. The second shell nearly doubled my cost, bringing it up to what fuller-service movers like Allied or Mayflower might charge. It was a lot of work to wrap all my furniture. I didn't hear from Zippy Shell with a definite pickup schedule until late Friday afternoon for a Saturday morning move and then all they sent was a very cryptic text message. I attempted to respond to it and to call the number from which it originated but was not able to get a living person. As a result, they showed up a good hour before I realized they were coming and I wasn't able to get my neighbor's car moved (which was reserving the 2nd-half of the parking space needed for the shell). The driver had to park down the block and the movers had extra work. Luckily they were able to complete it in the time allowed. Delivery is expected in the next 5-7 days and I'll try to update this once it happens. The biggest pro is that Zippy Shell has promised to get my belongings to me in one-third the time the fuller-service movers could (7 days vs 21). Also, my belongings are self-contained in the semi they travel in minimizing the chance of things getting lost, and I don't have to pay the state entry tariff because of the contained pod. The cons...more work for me, bad communication, unpredictability. Zippy Pod's new to Chicago and expanding rapidly. I like to think these are growing pains and will definitely contact them when I move again (within my new town) in the next 12-24 months. read more

I can't comment on the actual shell and storage because we ended up canceling last minute due to a change in circumstances, but the team at Zippy Shell couldn't have been more helpful or responsive. Due to flooding, we had to schedule movers and storage very last minute so we could get our floors redone. Zippy Shell was able to fit us in last minute AND find us movers to help move our furniture into the shell. They still offered to coordinate with the movers after we canceled the shell and storage, over the weekend no less. We're dealing with an incredible amount of stress, logistics and costs from this unexpected flooding and really appreciate kind people with good service like the team at Zippy Shell. read more

The greatest lesson I learned is to use them for the Shell only, and to arrange your own loading/unloading services. Don't use Zippy Shell if you're someone who doesn't like to have to coordinate a move FOR your move coordinator, make multiple phone calls to different people the day of (or before) your move, or pay for logistics instead of customer service. I will probably not use Zippy Shell again, but do want to make sure to give the company credit where credit is due, so here's the breakdown: PROS - You don't have to drive a UHAUL across the country -There's a guaranteed window of time in which your shell will arrive, that is shorter than for long-haul trucks. - The coordinators (and city reps) are very kind, and try to be helpful (when you reach them) - They can bring and take away the shell the same day, so you don't have to worry about a spot to keep it parked longer term. CONS - The main office is in Florida, so even with Dale, an extremely helpful Chicago rep, on our case, we had to wait until he reached someone (or our move coordinator in Florida, who was also very kind but often unavailable) to find out where our movers were, what time the shell would arrive, etc. - My move coordinator was replaced two days before my move with another coordinator I had never spoken with before. - I paid to have them coordinate the move, but "coordination" loses its meaning when I'm the one fielding phone calls from four different people the day of. And helping the movers move furniture in, because the moving company they hired is actually a TaskRabbit style service with two college guys hauling everything. - I did not receive an email the day before, and was not contacted until I initiated contact to confirm what time the Shell or movers would be arriving. This made is very hard to communicate with the building management, and to reserve a freight elevator. Hope this helps! A better option than some, but I have to say, the smoothest part of the process for us was when they were selling us on the idea of this service. read more

The first half of my Zippy Shell experience has been better than I ever expected. I was apprehensive about loading up my apartment for an 1,000 mile cross country move, but Kevin made the whole process a breeze. He was so helpful and informative about how to pack the container to maximize space and keep items from shifting. Huge disappointment. I selected Zippy after reading positive reviews about them. We booked them for a cross country move to Portland. We needed delivery on a set date and paid an extra fee to ensure delivery on that date. They confirmed it in writing. Five days after they picked up our stuff, and two days before delivery was scheduled I emailed them to ensure the time was set only to be told there was a delay. Not a day or two delay but four days. While they did indicate they would reimburse the extra fee, that will not begin to cover the extra expenses of four days of hotel charges plus meals. read more

I will give a 5 star rating when we complete our home sale. Kevin from the local office has been outstanding in communicating every step. Brian, who was the pick up driver also kept us up to date about timing. The only negative was after the original contact, I was unable to get in touch with Mark at the main office (no answer of any phone for two days). After that everything has gone great! We loved having the cage bars to hook bungee cords to to help keep our property safe! When we get a new house and get our shell back, I will review again. So far we are fans!! Added the 5th star!!! We just used Zippy and what a great experience. The customer service from the local Chicago office was great from day one. The drop off today was on time and they worked with us and our schedule as to when they were to pick it up at the end of the day. They also helped us get no parking signs from the city and given the recent huge snowfall and DIBS on stops, this was very helpful. The driver even helped shovel snow out of the spot when he arrived. I was referred by a realtor for this new service or would've used my expert moving team except they didn't do long distance moves... the move was scheduled from Chicago to the East Coast. 1- Furniture was stored for 5 months - and there was no free month since partial months are not prorated. And yes, they have open assess to charge your credit card. Getting any credits is a process. 2- Since the movers are part of the "deal", it was expected these are reputable, top notch movers. Not so. Should've got our own. Most every piece of nice quality wood furniture was scratched or gouged (as in 1/2 inch gouges from the iron bars of the cages). As damaged furniture came out of the cage, the "unloading" movers (different company than the packing movers) noted the entire unit was incorrectly wrapped and packed. Hence all the damage. Both movers showed up at the location one hour early... a bit inconvenient on moving days. Additionally, expect to pay extra fees for things like STAIRS (read your movers contract)! I don't know why the movers didn't bring and use the packing blankets for a long distance move. (Zippy actually asked us how many we would need - as if we knew. Just bring alot in case you need them.) 3- Regarding insurance (like other reviewers) we were told about global coverage - which ended up being for the pod and building. No mention of a personal property coverage ($500 plus a $500 deductible). Estimates of our damage was more than $1,000. 4- Throughout the process, we talked / emailed with about 10 different people, several which claimed to be our "personal moving coordinators". Not so. Some contacts said "I'm not the right person, talk to your coordinator." 5- The size of the cage didn't hold all items. The movers came and said "Oh, no, that's not all going to fit!! What do you want to take?" There was no good assessment of the furniture in our residence prior to the move. There was no chance of getting a second cage in time and with a condo move-out, you have dedicated hours to get your stuff out. Period. The amount of stuff thrown out was ridiculous and costly. I cannot recommend using this service. Get your own reliable movers that know how to correctly wrap and securely pack your prized belongings.
