Zippy's feels like the Hawaiian equivalent to what we (I) in the Mainland (Continental United States) see as a chain diner restaurant (like Denny's, iHop, Norm's, etc.) specializing in breakfast and comfort food dishes. It feels like a known quality type place for convenience. If it opens late or early it becomes a reliable place as well. I didn't try their famous "Chili" dish, but I think I did over 2 decades ago on a visit. I can't recall if it was good or great or not, but the fact that I can't remember made it not memorable for me back then so I opted to try other things here. Their food was good, except like other places who have gender non-conforming bathrooms, there are no gender non-conforming bathrooms here, which makes me feel disgusted having to go in gendered bathrooms as a nonbinary agender person myself. Came here straight from the airport since they were open until midnight. Food definitely hit the spot. Zippy's is a chain, I would say it's the equivalent of Dennys in Oahu. So many choices on the menu and I appreciate that they have mini and regular portions. My go to is normally the loco moco and it didn't disappoint. The fried noodles was a pretty large portion so we all had some and it was very good too. The Korean fried chicken was super crispy with a sweet flavor. It always good to go with several people and hopefully they share so you can taste a little bit of everything. Horrible customer service. Waited in take out line for over 10 minutes, I was 3rd person. Cashier/counter person walked away and later walked out with her handbag, guess she finished work. Other cashier came out did some tasks with 2 of us waited in line. Could see cook person just standing around. We left went next door to Liliha Bakery. Got seated as soon as we entered, ordered within 5 minutes, 5 minutes later got our food. Time at Liliha bakery 10 minutes to get our food. Time wasted at Zippy's standing around 10 minutes. Picked up some lunch via their mobile app since I was close by on Saturday, 10/07/23. The Zippy's app is easy to use. The one thing they need to improve on is adding a special instructions line. Since the app is about a year old, hopefully down the road they'll improve on this. App indicated the pick-up time was 15 minutes. Didn't realize I was really close to this location Iocation, like 2 minutes away by GPS. It didn't take me long because it was also a Saturday afternoon, just after 1PM, minimum traffic heading west on Nimitz. This was my 1st time going to this location so did not know where the designated spots were for mobile/online pickups. As I turned left into their parking lot, I saw the orange signs right away to my right. In fact, it's the 1st 2 spots on the right. I was surprised that there were only 2 spots unless there were more by the disabled parking spots. Other Zippy's I've been to have at least 4+ spots. Also the signs weren't numbered so on the app I just typed in mobile since they already got your car descrip when you order. I knew I was early but right before I pulled in, I had received a text from Zippy's letting me know they were ahead of schedule & that my order would be ready at 1:23PM, perfect! I waited not even 5 minutes & a nice young Filipino gal brought my order out. I was impressed with the quick service I ordered a mini fried chicken plate with brown rice & mac salad along with a large Portuguese bean soup which came with 2 pkgs of Diamond Bakery crackers. The soup is my go-to & I always order it at Zippy's. Their soup was ONO It was probably the best tasting one of all the different Zippy's I've been to over the years. It had chunks of meat - smoked ham & Portuguese sausage, & lots of veggies with each spoonful. Broth was tasty & not over seasoned. Some Zippy's have given me a few pieces of Portuguese sausage, less veggies, ton of soup. Not here. There was a perfect balance of meat/veggies/soup & I felt I got what I paid for. Mini fried chicken - ONO! Cooked perfectly, juicy, not dried out or burnt. Good sized thighs, tasty & simply fried chicken, the kind I grew up at home before KFC came along. Zippy's fried chicken is hit or miss. When it's fresh out of the fryer, it's a 10, when it's been sitting under the heat lamps it's a 0. Theirs was a 10. This is my one of my FAVORITE spots whenever I travel to Oahu. I always look forward to getting the breakfast plate (karaage chicken, scrambled eggs, and fried rice). OMG! Coming from California I was very pleased that they're checking vaccine cards and temperatures for sit down dining. Due to a two hour flight delay, I picked up my friend at the airport at 11:15pm. He had initially had plans of eating a dinner in Waikiki but with restaurants closing at 11 or 11:30pm, that plan was out the door. He started check for restaurants on Yelp and directed my to this Zippy's location, which closed at midnight. Driving into the parking lot, there was two cars so we weren't sure if they were still open. But two guys standing next to a car said the restaurant was open. We walked to the dining area and the waitress sat us at a table. There was one other party there, but they were about ready to leave. My friend checked out the menu and wanted the Hawaiian stew, but it was sold out. He opted for the Zip Pac Deluxe, which was a large combination plate consisting of a piece of fried chicken, spam, beef teriyaki, fried fish, a fried egg, rice, chili and macaroni salad. The food looked good and the variety that was in this order! The food came out fairly quickly and my friend finished most of it and packed some to go. Since I had dinner, I just ordered a cup of coffee, which was pretty good and not watered down like coffee at some diners. Since we were the only customers in the restaurant, we chatted with waitress about travels and her plans to fly to Arizona to visit family. There's one thing I hate doing when going to a restaurant which is showing up thirty minutes or less from their closing time. With my flight delayed two hours due to a plane tire issue, I arrived shortly before 11 pm and had to get my luggage. With most if not all restaurants in Waikiki closing by 11 pm, my choices were limited. I Yelped for 24-hour restaurants and two of the top four choices were Zippy's. With this being the closest to the airport, we pulled into the parking lot and I asked two guys whether they were still open and they confirmed yes. When we walked in, the bakery to the left was dark (it was 11:30 pm) and only the right side of the place was lit. There was a table of four guests at a booth by the greeting podium as we waited to be seated. We were led to a booth to the left across from the counter. The menu is a two-sided sheet with breakfast on one side and lunch/dinner items on the other. After deciding on the latter, I asked about a specials item which was Hawaiian stew on that Wednesday. I ordered this but our waitress checked the kitchen and told me that they were out. Being that it was 11:45 pm (1:45 am PST), I knew better than to try to finish that plate. I finished the chili, the spam slice, and half of everything else, savings the rest for breakfast two mornings later. I am glad that I am a speedy eater so we were able to pay the bill and leave the restaurant before their midnight close time. I was a bit apprehensive when we walked in, given the time. The vibe was matter-of-factly until I struck a conversation up with our waitress Raydine. Before you knew it, we were talking about travel plans, family, and vacations with chuckles and smiles until we walked out the door. If not for the second poorest steak I've ever had I would give them three stars. The waitress was the saving grace for this place. I ordered the $24 garlic rib steak. It was basically a 12oz ribeye steak and take a look at the picture because the cook obviously was not educated on how to cook a proper steak. The fat wasn't rendered and the meat color was gray when I asked for medium rare. It was chewy and bland. The only other steak which I had that was worse is Sizzler's sirloin steak. That's the toughest steak out there. You can do better like Liliha Bakery next door. read more

A few days ago, I felt like eating really good fried rice and remembered I used to order it from here almost every Friday's on my way to work prior to COVID. I ordered Chili Frank for my husband (one of his many favorites) and ordered a side order of fried rice for myself which consists of 2 scoops. My husband liked his plate lunch as always...you can never go wrong with this selection. As for my fried rice, it wasn't the same. It hardly had any meat...just look at my picture of it. Ever since this Zippys has reopened they have improved drastically and it has become my go to Zippys when I have that Zippys craving. The place is cleaner and managed so much better. They have hand sanitizer and practice and enforce safe distancing. The staff are always polite and helpful and do a great job in getting orders out quickly. All my orders, knock on wood have been perfect. The Zippys take out service during COVID19 has been so convenient and providing a vital service to the community, I so appreciate them. I always order the Chili of course as well as the Chicken Katsu Sandwich, Korean Fried chicken plate and the Zippys Saimin. I have never been disappointed and my order has always been perfect. Another place I have to stop at while I'm in Hawaii is Zippys. Their fried chicken and chili are so good. We stopped by this Nimitz location after arriving from the airport and I was a bit disappointed. The fried chicken was still good, but it took over an hour for us to get our food. We were there with my sister and her husband and although we all ordered at the same time, they got their food 30-40 minutes before we did. Before you ask, we ordered the same thing as them too! Turns out the location was short staffed, and they only had one chef. There were so many people just waiting around. If you're gonna try Zippys, maybe try another location. This is the first time I encountered a cashier that don't know English or how to serve customers. Needs to listen more as to what the customer wants. Frequent Zippy's a lot. Tonight my service is way below service level. Please assist in training this individual for better service to your clients. I will think about returning due to the type of service I received. We had a zippys gift card that we wanted to use, so after going to the beach we got in the car and I checked their website. It was super easy to preorder everything! And even better their daily special was Turkey Neck soup which is basically oxtail soup but with turkey necks. Oh boy oh boy I love me some turkey neck soup! They also had a roast turkey plate which we also got plus a surf pack which is two teri beef, two fried chicken, spam, and rice. This review is for today 5/4/22 I was craving Zippy's today so I went to this Zippy's and ordered myself the zippac deluxe sub.. teri beef for xtra chicken. And an order of jin dui. I got home to satisfy my craving but was met with utter disappoint. The chicken was dry like it has been sitting for awhile, and was just thrown in the fryer to make it seem fresh. That's why the coloration of it looks so dark and the same thing with the Jin dui....just throw it the fryer for a couple of minutes and act like it was just made. See photos for reference!!! I went to zippys yesterday, and was very disappointed with the food there. I don't understand how you can screw up omelette, especially with there babe on it. It looked like a burnt pizza, with dried fried rice. The server was nice and friendly, and tried the remedied the situation.
