Diners,Drive ins & Dives O Boy! That's what my wonderful wife and I did.We proceeded to Drive to this Iconic Zips Diner and then we eagerly proceeded to Dive into some Classic timeless meals! My Better Half enjoyed a Broccoli and cheese Omelette with home fries and an English muffin that cooked to perfection.Breakfast Is served all day,seeing how we were there at 4:30 in the afternoon. Nice option. I went for the gusto and had the Zip's Half pound bacon burger,fries and a side of onion rings. I washed that down with a classic vanilla frappe that was Outstanding!Its like stepping into a Time Machine And going back 30 years . This place is a staple to this area. Straight away, not a fan. The instant feel is that 50's era diner. That's all fine and good, but beyond that it's average at best. The hash is from a can. The food is subpar. In fact, we both left with a bit of an upset stomach. Maybe too much grease on the griddle? They messed up the oatmeal...legit, the oatmeal! Lol ohhhhh the humanity. The service was really good. Our waitress was beyond friendly and attentive. She would skip too and fro through the establishment. That offered some comic relief to the abysmal meal. Dayville has an enormous shopping center on one side of its highway exit. On the other side: Zip's. Or as some may recognize it "EAT." Zip's is a classic diner with plenty of seating space, speedy service, and a decent menu. I love how they class it up by slapping a suit on their Maitre'D. I can't tell you if I fell in love with the place because it was just that awesome or if it was because I was in a scary, dirty, sh*hole of a motel the night before and anything is a sight from heaven compared to it. But what I can tell you is that Zip's worked wonders on my wedding hangover by searing canned corned beef to a crispy finish and serving it with the most beautiful poached eggs with a side of tender potato hash. Mmm... and the hot chocolate topped with whipped cream reminded me of childhood as it slowly oozed into my empty belly. Driving through Dayville on my daily commute from school had me feeling some sort of way. Looked up dinner food and I'm glad I stopped at Zips. Grabbed a normal BLT which was great and Onion Rings that were excellent. What sold me was the kindness from each staff member, greeted the moment I walked in, kind face ringing me up. I've been a fan of Zip's from back when their Neon "EAT" sign was the tallest sign off the highway. Now even though Dunkin Donuts and McDonald's have moved in with their bigger signs - Zip's is still my choice. It's a great classic diner, lovingly preserved from its shiny quilted chrome to the red vinyl stools at the counter. The menu is traditional comfort food soups, burgers, open-face sandwiches, meatloaf and great breakfast choices all at reasonable prices. For dessert there's an impressive selection of pies with lots of hot coffee to wash it down. Today I had a slice of coconut creme pie with coffee as I took in the whole Zip's atmosphere. As usual there was a great cross section of folks there for lunch - families with small kids, truckers, college kids, locals and a couple of nuns in a booth. As diners go, you're looking at one of the best around. We come from Worcester (arguablyk the home of the diner universe) and around us are like 15 within 5 miles. Breakfast all day, great choices for lunch, their club sandwiches are to die for. We love the sausage that comes with a well made breakfast; 2 eggs, toast, home fries and sausage is around $8. All items can be added a la cart. Ham instead of sausage no problem. French toast, home fries all are delicious. Usually we stop around lunchtime so can't speak to dinners. I just had the worst experience at this place today. We were a party of two and got seated pretty quickly but we've watched other people who came after us get helped first, get their food and actually finish eating meanwhile our order still has not arrived. When I finally asked our server what's going on she told me the food is coming so we waited some more. At this point it has been over an hour wait. The server comes back saying there was a mix up in the kitchen which was fine okay I can understand that but expressed that it's a bit frustrating especially that we're sitting under the sun (at this point). Immediately greeted with a sign on the door informing you of a 4% surcharge on all menu items and a 4% discount for paying cash. Whatever, I don't mind paying a little more for a convenience of not having to carry cash. I just thought it a little strange that they don't just raise the prices on their menu and say, HEY! 4% discount for cash. Guy that greeted us, presumably the manager was nice, seemed friendly. Waitress was decent but seemed busy. The breakfasts we ordered were okay and came out pretty quickly. The coffee wasn't great, but sometimes you just need the caffeine so I choked down a cup and a half. Prices were a tad high for what you get, portion-wise. Stopped in after driving back from conference in Wooster. Exactly what I expected and wanted. Pretty darn good diner food in a cozy restaurant. Fast efficient service and friendly waitresses. I got the BLT and I really thought it was very good. The food came out ridiculously fast like in less that 10 minutes. I wish it was closer to where I live because I would stop in there to get a sandwich or breakfast often. Nonetheless I definitely will stop if I am driving up that way again. Now I absolutely love a good cheap diner. But this place is a drag. A diner to me means food thats made in house, just good homecooked simple dishes. Clearly this is not the case here. I've been here a few times and everytime I was extremely disappointed. It just seems that everything I tried came from a can or bag or something. Everything is always extremely salty and that usually means one thing..preservatives...from a can. That's not homecooking to me. Ain't got no soul. Sorry Zips...you got great potential but get back to your roots in the kitchen. Your grandma would give u a licking with her spoon if she tasted the food going out of that kitchen. What a weird place. So many inconsistencies here. Its a cool old dining car and I like that they serve breakfast all day. My girlfriend had the hot turkey dinner and I had the chicken fried steak dinner. Both came with a salad or soup and choice of veggie for a reasonable price. The salads were both pretty good. My chicken fried steak arrived and I was surprised to get what I'm pretty sure was a house breaded steak. It was covered with a nice house made gravy and other than being a tad on the salty side it was excellent. Unfortunately the gravy was brown and I definitely prefer a white gravy on a CFS. I was pretty pleased (and surprised) to see a homemade gravy. Here is where it gets weird. They go through all that trouble and then serve me boxed mashed potatoes. Seriously, you're a restaurant. How hard is it to make mashed potatoes? It just shows massive indifference. It's not hard to do folks. You can even get a variety of potato you dont have to peel. Dont do this. The canned cranberry sauce (weird accompaniment to a CFS) and canned creamed corn were fine...kinda. My girlfriend had the hot turkey dinner. Fresh turkey with a mix of white and dark meat from a clearly house roasted bird. That must be a lot of work and the meat looked very good. Again, boxed mashed potatoes. Seriously this is just weird. You're gonna roast turkeys in house but cant make mashed potatoes? The turkey was served on top of a charred beyond belief house stuffing. Like blackened, crunchy and disgusting. She said it made everything on the plate taste burnt. Gross. She barely ate any of it. So you get two stars. There is a lot of promise in a place serving house roasted turkey and homemade gravy. The cool old dining car has a very authentic feel to it too. If you have cooks who care so little that they will put charred blackened stuffing on a customers plate and are too damn lazy to make a real mashed potato you arent gonna get much love here. I've been dating, betrothed to, and now married to a boy from this area for oh, 11 years now, and I only went to Zip's for the first time this weekend. As mentioned in other reviews, the giant "EAT" sign assured me this place would be 100% diner-tastic before I even set foot inside. And the promise of the sign was totally delivered - this the epitome of classic diner. It's a greasy spoon but definitely does not leave you smelling like bacon when you leave, which I was actually quite surprised by. My party of 5 sampled the BLT, tuna club, pot roast sandwich and some good old eggs and toast, fries, onion rings...you get it. And it was all great - no complaints here. So this is three stars for a first visit, all though I am tempted to give it 4. But I will need to go back to confirm...just in case. Because I am kind of a diner guy and lots of locals from CT and RI know my passion, they pointed me here. Most, if not all of the places I have eaten a CFS at outside of Texas use a frozen version. Then they usually slop brown gravy on it. So, given the reviews and personal prodding, we were off. Here is the deal: Daughter had foot long hotdog. According to her, it was the bestest ever. I had the CFS breakfast, (CFS, 2 eggs, toast and home-fries) Wife had Biscuits and sausage gravy So here is the run down. Biscuits and gravy. Gravy is made on site and is really good. The wife is a bit of a B&G snob and has not been really happy with the effort up here in New England. Southern women, go figure. Anyway, she thinks this is the best B&G around (north of the Mason Dixon). CFS. Well, it does start off frozen. But, as you can tell from other comments, it is slightly difficult to tell. I felt it was, all though I did like it, and confirmed with the staff. I will say, short of getting one hand made, this one was really good. Meat was nice and flavorful, the crust was crisp and it was covered in their sausage gravy (white with sausage). This is a little unusual but it works. Eggs were cooked to order and the rest was pretty good. To close it off, we have a strawberry short cake. This was fantastic. From where I am from, it is served on a sponge cake, this was on a sweet biscuit topped with nice whipped cream. Awesome (and worth the trip all by itself). We will be returning, mainly for the other two passions. 1st, the corned-beef hash. NE has this down, when it is made on sight. I did confirm that it is homemade and will be back to try. The wife wants the Turkey. They bake 2 fresh every day. I know there was mention of boxed potatoes, which I hate, but oddly enough, the wife likes them. Makes me wonder why I married her.
