Stayed at the Chelsea House BNB for a birthday weekend celebration and popped in here for breakfast. We got so lucky because it's just a few steps away from this place. We enjoyed their quiche (ALTHOUGH we wish they would warm it up on a toaster oven versus a microwave) the taste was delicious but the texture of the crush was mushy, and TEXTURE does matter. The lattes were 4 out of 5 and the ambiance was very lovely quaint town and nice energy. The outdoors has plenty of seating and we also enjoyed their pastries 5 out of 5. read more

Very cute and bustling cafe in downtown Chelsea! They have a variety of coffee drinks, pastries, breakfast and lunch items. I ordered a medium vanilla latte with oat milk and their lox bagel without the lox to keep it vegetarian. The space is homey and cozy and staff were very friendly! Great weekday breakfast spot with our little before school. She had a plain bagel with cc and cucumbers. Hubs had the crepe with jam and I couldn't pass up the bagel & lox. It was a beautiful plate and just as tasty. I was very happy that the lox weren't too salty. The veggies were crisp and refreshing. They opened at 7am and we were the first through the door. We weren't familiar with the menu, which is extensive but the counter person was very patient and welcoming. Excellent breakfast. We'll return without the little to try the selection of beers on tap and nice selection of wine. read more

Service was not great and unfortunately not friendly. My tea latte was so scalding hot I still could not drink it 60 minutes later and then it was only oKay, quiche was clearly microwaved (which was not great for the crust), and unfortunately the crepe was the biggest disappointment. It barely had filling (like seriously there was maybe one sliced strawberry in the entire strawberry crepe) and not sweet at all even with some powdered sugar, super disappointed as the menu looked outstanding. Sad this was my experience, but do not recommend. read more

I was in town for a meeting and had about an hour to kill so I stopped in for a bite. I got the turkey sandwich which was excellent, and I loved the all of the employees, it seemed like a very family oriented, local type place. Well known cyclist stop/meeting place. Outside dining during Spring/summer months. Great for cafe webbing. Sandwiches are premade for the day and wonderful. I've been coming to ZouZou's for about 18 years now, ever since I moved to this area from Ann Arbor. This place has always drawn me in, from its noisy interior, usually busy, authentic frenchy feel (I've never been to France), it has always been the best bet in Chelsea for non-chain, homemade stuff. The Good: * The soups here are really good! mushroom, tomato tortellini, chicken wild rice, they're all really good.. * Also the pastries, if you have a sweet tooth. I recommend the carrot cake, cinnamon rolls, and lemon tart! * The dining room is spacious and cool, though noisy. * the sandwiches, especially my favorite, the lox bagel * at least a dozen craft and artisanal libations on tap, none of which I've tried * decent, non-burnt tasting coffee The Bad: * Still serving dine-in on terrible cheap disposable paperware. What?? Come on guys. Let's get back in tune. Disposable for dine-in? You're better than this! WE'RE better than this!! * Staff is nearly always 'new on the job', which I understand, since its a small cafe, and a great place for a first job, but its always a tad annoying to deal with. (I still tip large tho‍) * Zero savory options in the pastry case. No cheddar chive scone. No ham and cheese croissant. No spinach feta pockets, or sausage rolls. So if you like pastries but staying away from sugar, stay away from ZouZou's! I get frustrated every time I come in here, for one reason or another, but I keep coming back. Its the small town feel, family-owned, community-oriented homemade vibe that brings me back. I suggest you drop in. A year later and the upgrade is still great. I recently had a lunch meeting here and was reminded of how many fantastic meal options they now have. I'm attempting the boring low-carb thing but they had several really great salads to choose from which was helpful. I went with the Cherry Chicken Salad, which is their house made chicken salad on a bed of lettuce, garnished with tomatoes, cucumbers and red onion served with their balsamic vinaigrette. YUM! Iced tea was also excellent. Plenty of comfortable seating for dining, meeting, or just getting a coffee and pastry and working. A great option in downtown Chelsea all around! read more

I ordered a large coffee and this is more than ones and they always give you a large cup and fill the cup only halfway at the most. Even though I wanted a full cup and have to pay full prices, which is actually fairly expensive. They may have good food but there price of food ratio is over expensive. It's like they're trying to have California prices for midtown amount per food. read more

The crepes here were really yummy! We ordered- AM bagel for the kids & husband, I got the ham egg and cheese crepe and the family split strawberry & cream crepe and cinnamon brown butter crepe. Hubs and I got Vietnamese coffee and the whole fam split a blueberry lemon scone. The food was decent. It wasn't like, earth shattering or the best I've ever had, but it was solid. Almost everyone here was super nice, kind and helpful. The one exception was, I'm assuming the chef. I didn't see any eggs on my crepe that was ordered with eggs and just came up to the ordering window and asked if there would be anyway to just get some scrambled eggs on the side for protein. I was super chill and polite about asking. A few minutes later the chef comes to our table and sort of accuses me and asks to see my crepe. So I'm like opening it up and showing her awkwardly and she talks down to me about how it's not scrambled eggs stuffed in, it's sort of a fat broken up within the Crepe, so you don't see it. I apologized for my mistake and the chef continues to stand there awkwardly and stare at me. She kept saying she could make me scrambled eggs if I need to, but that she did the order correctly. I had already acknowledged that I was fine, but she asked me multiple times after about the eggs, not listening to me. After I told her a third time everything was cool, she walked up to the front ordering staff and loudly talked about the situation and how I was wrong. It was extremely rude and awkward situation that was completely unnecessary and weird. The other reason for knocking the stars was the bathroom I took my son in. There were lots of splatters all over the wall like it had never been cleaned by the toilet, sink and bench. It either needed a new coat of paint or a few clean. I like the idea of Zou zous and loved the service except for the one chef. I'd love to come back again with the kids and do some school work with the kids as a treat; but it might be a while after that experience. One thing I wish they did differently was offer water refills - either the staff coming around or a public pitcher / carafe. I got thirsty eating breakfast and had already blown through two little cups they provided. read more

I ordered a pumpkin chai tea latte and a dessert. Came as black tea (or the least chai spice tea I've ever had) with milk and no pumpkin. She then added a couple drops of pumpkin syrup. Barista was holding the cup by the top which is against health code to have bare hands where my lips will be. Pecan bar was decent but again some health code issues as the person taking my order slipped with the pastry paper and had a bare finger on the bar. I'm not super picky or paranoid about pathogens but.... The cafe is cute and the staff friendly. Hopefully they get some of these things worked out. read more

I've been coming here for coffee and the atmosphere for years but rarely venture onto the menu, in the past week I've tried two different things: the cherry chicken salad and the veggie chili. If you're passing through Chelsea, you just might see a cute little cafe on the corner. This happened to me on Sunday as I went out to hike around Green Lake on the DTE trail. As luck would have it, I was ready for hot tea and a bathroom break by the end of the hike, meaning a trip to Zou Zou's would be just the thing. Easy to find in downtown Chelsea, I popped into Zou Zou's and immediately felt the chill of the afternoon walk start to melt away. Tables and couches are scattered around the room, which boasts hardwood floors and high old ceilings. Wanting something decaf, the barista steered me towards a selection of teas, and I found a minty one that was very refreshing. I also visited the restroom before heading out, and found it to be a nice size and well kept. My quick trip to Zou Zou's had me wanting to visit Chelsea more often, and I have a feeling that it won't be long before I'm back there! read more

If you like noisy, loud venues (due to the wooden floors & tin ceiling) then you'll love it. What I don't care for... is what was supposed to be one of the signature sandwiches (MI cherry chicken) was disappointingly flavorless. A few large chunks of chicken & an unripened hothouse tomato slice made this inedible as a sandwich, it was largely a $12. (1/2 sandwich with small salad Zou Zou's Special) mess as it fell apart right away. I guess I'll stick with just coffee & dessert next time as the lemon bar & carrot cake I shared with a friend was delicious! read more

This is a nice little coffee shop at the main intersection of downtown Chelsea. The vintage interior is very nicely done and provides an attractive, roomy space to enjoy a hot beverage (or a cold one, I suppose) and perhaps a treat. There is a reasonable number of indoor tables and also outdoor seating. That's a great option for nice weather days, as was the case when I was there. The staff were very efficient and attentive when I visited. I opted for an Americano, which was decent. Quite honestly, it was not as strong as I was expecting, and strong coffee is generally my preference. So I'm giving this rating more on the exceptional ambiance. I don't want to penalize too much for one visit trying one item. Next time, I'll go with a Redeye now that I've calibrated their offerings relative to my taste. But overall, this is a very enjoyable spot for a few relaxing moments when you're out and about. To make things more convenient, it's a one block walk or so from the closest city parking area. read more

A hidden gem I many regards. First of all the beer menu is actually really really good. Not what I was expecting at all. Not quite as extensive as the Alehouse, but usually has different selections of some harder to find taps. Definitely stop in to check out what's on tap. The coffee selection is excellent and every one we have tried has been terrific. Desserts galore to choose from muffins to cookies. The s'mores bar was amazing! Nice little place. The food was acceptable. I liked the Fancy Cowboy; the accompanying Zou Zou Special chicken noodle soup was rather plain. My wife and our friend enjoyed the Manhattan Kingpin; my wife was unfortunately not a fan of the chai latte. I did find it rather pricey for what we got though. What an adorable café! It offers literally everrrrything you could possibly want: delicious sandwiches, crepes, desserts, biscotti, an impressive beer menu, seasonal beverages (their fall options looked incredible), etc. We grabbed some coffees, and the breve was our favorite. The café au lait was a little less impressive: you pour your own coffee, and the one I chose (butterscotch) tasted stale and plastic-y. It was somehow still good, but I'd recommend the breve. If you're looking for a drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), this is the perfect spot to meet a friend. There is a great bar with fixins for your drinks, as well. You can enjoy a meal or snack in a cozy spot, too. I'm not sure the exact schedule, but they had live music from 8-10 on the Friday we visited, which is awesome. It came without it and then was told they had been out of it for a few days when I told them it was missing. Would have been nice to know! I would have changed my order! This place is so hit or miss. Sometimes I go there and get a decent cup of coffee while I get work done- But easily as often, the juvenile staff screw up my order or arrange their social distance precautions in such a way that only 6 people can sit in the place even though if I sat at any of the closed tables I'd still be 10 feet from the next person... and they're rude when you question them about either. I really tried over the years to find a way to overlook all the flaws of this place, but they just never seem to care or grow out of their low standards for customer service and lack of barista skill. read more
