My wallet was almost stolen but caught the man trying to pull it from my purse at this location. My friend and I were sitting at a table and my purse was hanging on the chair and luckily touching my leg; I did not want to set it on the ground and the tables were too small. Luckily, my purse kept getting knocked which drew my attention to and saw the man sitting at the table behind ours had unzipped it and my wallet was halfway out! Fantastic, affordable, filling lunch option in the loop. The restaurant offers 12 soups on a daily basis, which you can look up on Zoup's online menu. (Be warned that sometimes they sell out of a soup, so the offerings you see might be slightly different by the time you get to the restaurant.) I write as a vegan who works downtown, because Zoup offers at least one (usually two) vegan soups for its customers. They are clearly labeled (look for the vegetarian and dairy-free soups). Only once--when I went to the restaurant within an hour of closing--had they run out of all vegan soups. I can't fault them for that. The best vegan soup is the Singapore Squash. It's rich (thanks to coconut milk) and delicious, with a little bit of kick. Really, my only complaint is that they offer it so rarely. (Sometimes I walk to the Zoup on West Washington to get my Singapore Squash fix... even though this is half a mile away from my office.) Also, Zoup employee Tasha is super welcoming, as are all the other Zoup employees. They even offer free samples--as many as you'd like. So, bottom line, thumbs up!! read more

After eating here a few times during lunch I have to say that it's a decent place to quickly get some soup. I haven't found one in particular that really stands out but I ate and enjoyed the Lobster Bisque and Creamy Chicken Wild Rice. Unfortunately for Zoup! I'm comparing them against the two SoupBox locations that pump out *excellent* soup... but Zoup! is cheaper so they have that going for them. We ztopped by this restaurant for a quick lunch, and we were impressed with the quality and variety of zoups! My partner loves zoup, so she enjoyed all of the zoup zamples! We ended up getting two big bowls of zoup - one was chicken noodle, and the other was lobster bisque. Some of these reviews are just ridiculous, really... I thought this place was great! The soup was delicious (OMG, vegetarian split pea??? YUMMY!), the staff was friendly and working SO HARD. I thought management was doing a fantastic job keeping it all together. It's a brand new restaurant in a huge city atmosphere. I commend these folks for just getting through the day in downtown Chicago! I had the pleasure of meeting Ryan and Joe, and I think Zoup has found the right guys. Great people people here. On that note, I have one question: What the H is WRONG with these other yelpers? I've been in restaurants for years and years and it still boggles my mind that people let onions or the layout of an entire establishment bother them so much that they have to take it out on others and/or write crappy reviews on Yelp to feel good about themselves. Like I said, the place was great, the soup was hot, fresh, and delicious, and the staff was warm and welcoming. Come on! What more could you ask for out of a 7-8 dollar meal??? I mean...it's ok. A couple of the soups that I tried had a distinctly flour-y taste and texture in it, like perhaps the base was thickened with roux or flour vs the good stuff like pure cream or broth. You can fool me! The lobster bisque did have several large lobster chunks in it, but again, less creamy, more doughy to me. When you're freezing and soup is the only remedy, Zoup will certainly do. read more

This place was pretty fantastic. It was a hot day so you know that's how much I love soup. It had a great selection of what I love best, soups! Probably had at least a dozen ready made soups, yours for the trying. I tried the chicken and dumpling and lobster bisque. After the small samplings, I decided to go with the lobster bisque. It was so creamy with a tinge of sherry, and the lobster was plentiful, delicate and sweet. I got the cup of soup with a half of a Southwest turkey. The Southwestern turkey sandwich was great too, melty, cheesy and perfect accompainment. You can also get some good looking sandwiches.But the real star of this place is the soups. The place is small and fills up pretty quickly but we were able to grab a table. And the staff was very pleasant and quick even though it got busy. I have been sick, and this soup spot was perfect! I had the half sandwich and soup combo. The half portion was small for me and my boss' salad was small too. I did upgrade the soup to the cup size an extra $1, but I think I should have gone for the bowl size as that was an extra $2. I got the shrimp and crawfish etouffe, and it was delicious. You can sample the soups before you decide on one. Apparently, they ran out of the cheeseburger soup - so that might be a popular one and we were there maybe quarter to noon. The staff is friendly and happy to offer suggestions for what you have a taste for. I have to say that I paid close to $11 and wasn't necessarily full. I did eat something else. If Zoup soup didn't cost $6.50 for a bowl of soup + a small baguette, I'd give them 4 stars. Zoup has tons of options, there is something for everyone... and it's more than just soup, they have sandwiches & salads as well. A big bonus is that they let you taste-test the soups, so you can get something you know you'll like. I love the chicken pot pie soup, it's so creamy & great on a cold day. Overall the soup is pretty good, but I just can't justify broth mixed with veggies/chicken costing so much. I also wish the baguettes were better (crustier or something, it's kind of like getting a chunk of white sandwich bread). Zoup will do in a pinch, but if I have my choice I'd pick Soupbox or Au Bon Pain first. read more

Tried this place for lunch one work day, and although it was quick, I found it to be too expensive for what I got. They let you try their soups which is nice, but they ran out of the Mac and cheese which all the workers said was their favorite...the other ones really didn't sound that appealing so I ended up getting a pretty regular baked potato soup. I also got the maple ham and bacon sandwich. With the half sandwich and the smallest size soup, the combo costs $12... that's pretty expensive. The sandwich was pretty good, but the soup was just okay. I've had better baked potato soup. Overall the experience was fine, but not really worthy of trying again unless there are limited options. Yummy soup. In the middle of winter. Can't go wrong! Also, they have a good system to get people moving quickly through the line (important when you don't really have time for lunch). Everyone was very courteous. My only complaint is that allergy info is buried in a binder that you have to ask for at the restaurant. My husband and I love going to Zoup. They have the best soup. The variety is amazing too. But recently the fresh bread that they provide with the soup has changed. You used to be able to pick between French or grain. And it was delicious. I personally loved the French. Recently they changed that. Now there is no choice . This place is going downhill fast. I have been going to this location for over 2 years now and the past 3 times have been terrible experiences. The soup is great, don't get me wrong, but this location is having a lot of issues lately. Started about 2 months ago, went in and ordered seafood etouffee, which had 2 small pieces of craw fish and the rest rice. Was upset, but didn't think too much of it. Next go in and get a bowl of mexican chicken and only filled it up to about 2/3 full. Fast forward to today, thought I would give them another try. Ordered the french onion soup and they didn't put any cheese in the soup. For $8-$10 a bowl, they need to be doing it better. Service has really gone down and I'm really disappointed. I was very underwhelmed with my purchase at Zoup. Maybe it was my own fault? Who knows. I fell ill one morning at work and by lunch time, I wanted soup for my belly. I ordered the potato cheddar thinking the chunks of potatoes would fill me (since I had not eaten in several hours). The soup was literally just a cup of melted cheese. It reminded me of that Velveeta crap in a pouch from my youth. I also ordered the turkey club. Shame on me for not reading the description, but I assumed a club sandwich would include lettuce, tomato, onion etc. The sandwich was so bland with only turkey, cheese, bacon, and mayo. I had the half of tuna and half of greek salad. The tuna was good, but I'm not a fan of flatbread (I didn't see that when I ordered.) Its tough to find good tuna in the loop but this was good, I just might request a different bread if I can! Good place for lunch. I like soup and salad for lunch and this is just over 1 block from my work place, so it's the most convenient for me to go here. Zoup has never disappointed me. I have tried different kinds of veggie soups - lentil soup, gazpacho, tomato basil all of which are great tasting. I ususally get the loco burrito salad with no meat and all veggie toppings, some times grilled chicken which is okay. When you walk in, it looks like it might be set-up like a Chipotle with the options on display for you to choose from and customize your meal. This is not the case. The only thing you can see are the soups, but that's okay because they offer free samples of the soup before you place your order at the cash register. And everyone loves a free sample, right?! I decided to go with the combo - Soup and Sandwich. For the price, I absolutely recommend this option. The soup I had (Shrimp and Asparagus with Dill) was creamy and delicious! My godson recommended that his mom, he and I have lunch at Zoup! in Chicago so we stopped for lunch today. I had a chicken pot pie soup with bread and a small iced tea (all delicious), and the total was just over $8.00 - not bad! Sandwiches and chips are also sold. The soups may be tasted should you wish to test for spice content. Gluten-free and vegetarian soups are available, and clearly marked on the menu. The seating area's a bit small and could use a bit of expansion. It's open Monday-Saturday, and is definitely recommended. read more

I ordered Zoup! for the first time today. The soup is great. I used the online ordering and picking it up took less than 30 seconds. I can definitely see myself ordering a lot of Zoup! in the future. The service and soup was good but the problem was I paid almost $10 for a soup bread bowl, received a whole lot of bread and hardly any soup. The point of a bread bowl is to eat the soup out of the bread bowl, right?
