Zukku presents Japanese "fusion" entrees, including sushi "burritos" (rolled in nori in place of a tortilla). At the recommendation of an employee, I ordered the Godzilla burrito. Like those movies, it's a bit of a mash-up... To be clear, a sushi burrito is not traditional, clean-tasting, "pure" sushi. If that experience is what you are craving, a sushi burrito will not do it for you -- it's an amalgam of traditional and non-traditional ingredients trying to achieve harmony. The Godzilla was heavy with non-traditional sushi ingredients including edamame, tempura shrimp, and spicy mayonnaise. The Godzilla also includes greens and asparagus, neither of which added anything to the combo -- I got the feeling that they were trying to brighten up a roll that is overpowered by the heaviness of two kinds of fried crunchies and spicy mayo (Q: Why include both wonton chips AND fried tempura?). The ingredients that are listed first in the Godzilla sushi burrito description are tuna and yellowtail -- ironic and disappointing, as both are completely absent flavor-wise, a few tiny cubes of fish drowned in mayo and other distracting, more powerful flavors. My mind goes to an image of the giant lizard stomping out of the sea, crushing beautiful fresh fish under his feet, his clawed fists full of fried breading bits and a bottle of Kewpie mayo... Anyway... At $18 (!), this medium-sized burrito was an experiment I wouldn't try again but some applause for the effort. read more

Very cool food stand inside optimist hall. Their service was FAST. I was intimidated by the long line but they moved through it very quickly to order. The service was polite and prompt. The sushi burrito, the gulf I believe was delicious. It was on the smaller side compared to what I'm used to but I enjoyed the flavor and quality of the food. Finally got to go to optimist hall and out of all the amazing choices I decided on Zukku. The prices are a little high but I guess I'd say it was worth it for the unique topping combinations. I got the spicy hot Cheeto covered sushi burrito. It stood out to me because of the hot cheetos of course which made it delicious, but combined with the marinated meat it was extremely spicy-I guess that's what I asked for tho! The food took about 15 minutes to be prepared which wasn't too bad. The cashier was polite and I liked how they handled the sanitation and new covid standards. I'm giving them 4 stars because the prices aren't the best and if you order what me or my boyfriend did you're going to need a drink which are also very pricy here. You can get poke or sushi that's better and more for less but it's still worth it for because of the location and unique menu items! read more

Namesake!!! Man I love a good roll and the Zukku at Zukku didn't disappoint. Optimist hall has a little of everything and that includes sushi. Stopped in and it's pretty much no frills order, prepared to order, and buzzed when ready. Ordered the Zukku roll and honestly I'm excited to go back and try more. In my opinion it is a little pricey for sushi that I can get at some of my favorite spots but nonetheless it was worth the price. The lemon really elevated this to another level. This is the first time I've had sushi with lemon but the flavors were all very complimentary. Great cool spot to try! read more

Enjoyed a visit to Optimist Hall and stumbled across Zukku. This review is solely on the roll that I tried, the Zukku Roll. The restaurants in Optimist Hall use an "Order and Buzzer" method. My girlfriend ordered the zukku roll, while I ordered at another place. Easy to say our roll was ready in less than 10 minutes. Now the roll... I don't know who had the genius idea to add lemon to this roll but it SET IT OFF! The roll was so good! The Zukku roll has tempura shrimp, salmon, crab mix, lemon slices and your typical adornments. Had zukku today. Got a big bowl with white rice, salmon, crab, edamame, tempura crunchies, eel sauce, and added masago. Pros: -not a long line or wait -easy to use menus -got a BIG portion of crab meat Cons: -rice tasted weird. Like too much rice vinegar was used.. it was oddly sweet. The rice was also very mushy, like they had over cooked it and/or used too much water to cook it -extra for brown rice and masago while many other places in charlotte do not charge extra! -i paid extra for masago and got a teeny tiny portion of it.. -sweet eel sauce was not sweet, it was too salty -got a TINY portion of salmon. About 6-7 pieces. -more $$ than other poke bowl places -only sell bottled water I usually don't like giving bad reviews to newly opened places BUT my disappointment came from the food and not the service or flow of the restaurant which has nothing to do with how recently new a place is. The food was just underwhelming and did not taste that great. Everyone knows that in sushi making the rice is the #1 most important thing to get here but unfortunately they missed that mark. The taste of the rice ruined the whole bowl along with other downfalls. The staff was ok, but mostly busy talking amongst themselves. I stood and waited for something for awhile before anyone noticed me because they were busy chatting and joking around. This is a fun sushi concept in Optimist Hall! I was already a huge fan of Optimist Hall, so I was excited to try another one of its restaurants. This place is a great complement to the other restaurants here. You can buy sushi, sushi burritos, and poke bowls from Zukku. I split a large poke bowl with a friend and was pretty full! I'd recommend the build your own option. They have some pre-set/recommended options, but I liked picking my own proteins, veggies, and toppings. The price is very average for sushi bowls and hovers right above $10. I will say the portions aren't huge, but the size is adequate for what you're paying. In terms of flavor, I'd say it was really tasty. The fish was fresh and the vegetables were fresh and crunchy. I also really liked the grilled pineapples. I went on a busy Sunday afternoon, so the service was fairly slow. It took more than 10 minutes to get our food. In my opinion, this is not my favorite spot in Optimist Hall, but definitely a very solid option for lunch or dinner here! read more

Overall good experience, we were excited and hungry so the almost 30 min wait dulled the experience. The burrito was pretty good but it was A LOT of cucumber and lettuce, I didn't mind it but my husband wasn't impressed. The Roll was reallyyyy good! Stopped in today to check out the new place. The staff and chefs at Zukku were extremely helpful with the building of my tuna burrito. They helped me through the process of what could go in the burrito, what elements are best together and the sauces. It was exceptional. We order the chicken karaage, the spicy salmon bowl, and the Florida bowl. The chicken karaage was perfectly crunchy and the dipping sauce provided a wonderful kick to the flavor. Paid what could have amounted to a very nice sit down sushi meal for a very sad tiny sushi burrito with measly fillings and a small poke bowl that was almost entirely lettuce. I normally get a sushi burrito other places for less and they are huge and i can eat half and be full. I am pretty small and dont eat much and yet i ate this whole thing and was still hungry.
