The amazing Zuni shoestring potatoes, with homemade aioli if you like !
Mauricio R.

For a more detailed experience of our feast at Zuni look up a prior review posted by me on this platform. These are new photos of my ongoing love affair with the venerable Zuni. I'd been going there before I turned 30 , I'm 68 years old young, you do the math.

Some major service misses, a wobbly table, and tables packed on top of each other, made this a disappointing experience. The appetizers were good (the salad was excellent, fried broccoli/onions/squash were a bit over-fried and oily, but very good; scallops, however, were drenched in a sauce that didn't quite match the sweetness of scallops). The fries were fantastic. So was an impressive squash dish. But because one member of the party had celiac, we had to order the chicken without bread - and were told it wouldn't be a problem. But the kitchen messed up, and by the time they caught the error, it was a bit too late... so no chicken. Not sure I'd go back, though... The restaurant is jam-packed with tables, making what is meant to be a nice meal akin to dining in a military mess hall. The table next to us was having an incredibly-raunchy conversation and my partner's mother didn't really need to learn that much detail about a stranger's sex life. But because it's so jam packed, we could hear them more clearly than we could each other. I understand that the restaurant industry operates on very tight margins, so every table matters. But waiting 75 minutes to find out what we were more excited about wasn't going to happen was incredibly disappointing, and the experience itself meant maybe the chicken just isn't worth it.

It's just great if a waiter asks you if you are going to a show and what time curtain is so he can help you plan your meal. We did not have time to order their famous roast chicken, but he told us how long it would take if we decided to order it. My friend and I each ordered salads that were fresh and I could taste the olive oil sprinkled on top. And we had stuffed squid in a delectable sauce. My husband has never been here. He was jealous. Now maybe he'll come with me.

Delicious food. Super cozy seating; rustic feel. Great wine selection by the glass too. Will be back.

Zuni Roast Chicken for Two with Bread Salad and the risotto

Zuni is a San Francisco staple. Been around forever. It's fancy yet appproachable. It's Michelin Flava yet still you can go with kids and not be jeered at. The food menu hasn't varied much over the last ten years I've gone, but it's high quality and consistent. The staff makes you feel special. Anyone that comes to your table will help you and not refer you to "your waiter". Try the oven Zuni Roast Chicken for Two with Bread Salad (it Fed 5 of us with many left over) with pine nuts and breading at the base it's totally worth it. It takes 90 min so order ahead or bring extra wine. The risotto was a little oilier than I like and the polenta was good. Deserts were all winners They have a nice wine menu. Make reservations far in advance. They do single tables all the way up to big party's and have a private room.

My first time at Zuni, I had this poetic squash blossom that used salmon as its canvas. It was so thin it appeared to be painted on. And a light, fresh corn summer cream sauce. My comadre chef friend, Lauren, could better describe our appetizer and her dish but the former was some sort of yellow and red tomato paradise with a toasted crumb fabulosity and her entree àn impeccably handled eggplant, tomato, tzaziki, seasoned and prepared at the edge of the Milky Way and brought back with a basil-baptized couscous. Who raves about couscous?!! I do! The eggplant made me question all of my life's choices as it was a dish prepared for saints (which is why Lauren ordered it, I believe)... They sat us in a loft as we would be eating heavenly things. Oh, and I also had a dirty vodka martini with extra olives which I thoroughly needed, deserved and enjoyed, as I do not often imbibe. Lauren had a Pretty in Pink mocktail which may have been kind of more Meh in Mauve but the impeccable, warm service and ambrosial fare replaced the trace of imperfection and all was right in the world. The only bad part was having to leave our little heavenly perch.

Zuni Roast Chicken for Two with Bread Salad

Celebrated my partner's birthday here and honestly... it felt like the perfect place for it. There's something about Zuni Café that immediately makes you slow down and settle in. The natural light, the buzzing conversations, the smell of good food floating through the air--it has that classic San Francisco charm that feels both lively and intimate at the same time. The staff were wonderful too: attentive, welcoming, and genuinely kind without ever feeling rushed. Of course, we came with one mission: the legendary Zuni Roast Chicken for Two with Bread Salad. Yes, the one that takes about 75 minutes. And now I understand the hype. That chicken arrives golden, crisp, and unbelievably fragrant. The skin shatters just slightly when you cut into it, while the meat stays juicy and tender. And the bread salad underneath? Warm, savory, and soaking up all those beautiful chicken drippings with bits of greens and toasted bread that somehow taste both rustic and elegant. It's one of those dishes where every bite makes you pause for a second. Then there were the Shoestring Potatoes. Dangerously addictive. Thin, crispy, salty little threads of happiness that you keep grabbing without realizing how fast they disappear. You tell yourself "just one more," and suddenly the plate is empty. Dinner here felt like a celebration in the truest sense--great food, great atmosphere, and the kind of meal that turns a simple birthday into a memory. We left full, happy, and already talking about coming back.

This was more for the ambience and service since my son and I only tried two dishes. He had a kids meal pasta with Parmesan and I had mushroom polenta (it was delicious). We arrive Friday night without a reservation. We grabbed next to the last table available. The service was polite and very attentive. There were at least two ther families close by. Zuni has been a SF institution since the 90s. I highly recommend it if you want to come here for good food and fun times. All kinds of crowds were there!

So happy we snagged a reservation here. Old school classy spot. Love the open windows and large ceilings. We shared the famous roast chicken and a side of fries. We asked for both to come out together and sipped on our martinis as we waited the 75 min - yes 75 min but SO WORTH IT! This is THE best roast chicken I've ever had. The bread salad in the middle of the chicken is refreshing and has great dressing with raisins / seeds. The shoe string fries were so delicious and addictive. YUM!!!

This place is a classic. The roast chicken is the best you will ever have!! It's consistent every single time. It's so good I bought their cookbook. The vibe is so cute too, you will feel like you are in Paris. Highly recommend this gem of a place.

Finally made it to try the roast chicken with panzanela and have to admit it was worth it!! Legit the best chicken I've had!! Just incredibly tender throughout. At the price point, I probably won't be ordering the chicken again any time soon but it's definitely worth a try to see what all the hype's about. Oh and note that the chicken can take some time (took about an hour for us) so order as soon as you're seated, and have some drinks and apps while you wait. The meringue for dessert was also amazing!! Seating however was not the most comfortable..there's lots of communal bench seating without back support and I had to get in my neighbor's personal space to slide back into my seat.

I wanted to be wowed, and I was not. I loved the burrata with melon, but that was kind of where it ended for me. The chardonnay selection was good, acme bread was good, but the chicken was a little overcooked and not exceptional, service was not great. Server made no effort to to connect with us but borough food and took orders, I saw her yawning some so maybe she was tired but it was disappointing. After waiting over an hour for a whole chicken I really wanted it to be exceptional and it was about a 6 on a 10 scale, overall I was left wondering why it was so highly recommended. The chocolate flourless cake they are known for was good but again not exceptional, I found it very crumbly, the bites were tough to get but once you scrounged it up and added some fresh whipped cream it was good, but not great.

I came here for my birthday and had an excellent time. The service here is always so good that it is memorable. Either our waitress gave the best recommendations to us or all of their food is on point. Unfortunately, I can't have wine at the moment because I'm pregnant, so the waitress put my apple juice in a wine glass which was so thoughtful! We got the stuffed squid for our appetizer and the chicken for two for the main. I almost got a bread for appetizer as well, but we were advised that what we ordered would be enough food. Turns out that that was great advise because without ordering the appetizer bread, I had more space in my belly to devour the tasty chicken and delicious bread salad! We ended up with some leftovers too and am thankful we didn't order too much. The stuffed squid was very tasty with the seasonings and the hint of lemon. The chicken was cooked to perfection, but what really stood out was the bread salad that came with it. I loved the currants and pine nuts and the crispy texture of the bread soaked in chicken drippings. For dessert, we ordered the apple pie and had a candle on it for my birthday. Since there's some alcohol in the sauce, the waitress put the sauce on the side and warned me about the alcohol in it. So thoughtful! Everything was so tasty that I can't wait to come back!

Ask the Community - Zuni Café

What is the wait time and/or will it be very hard for me to walk-in for a bar seat for only me on a Thursday (today or any Thursday) for dinner? Will I wait a very long time bc this is a popular restaurant?

Bar is standing only

Is the outside dining area dog friendly?

The outside seating is on the sidewalk adjacent to a fairly busy street stretch of Market St with lots of pedestrian traffic. Some of the pedestrian traffic can be sketchy and not the most ideal way to enjoy Zuni. (Sit inside for terrific ambiance.)…

What is the wait time like around 5pm on a weekday?

Always easy to get into Zuni Cafe. Plenty of tables and room.

What is the attire?

Casual attire is fine, but some folks are dressed up, just coming from the theater and such. You'll be fine either way.

I would like a reservation tonight for 2?

Who wouldn't! They only take reservations for seating after 6pm.

The inside of the restaurant is charming, with plentiful bar seating to watch as dishes are prepared in front of you in an open kitchen. The menu itself is constantly evolving and may be different with every visit. That being said, the main menu is a prix fixe 4-course meal with the option to add on 2-3 additional dishes to share. The meal starts with a amuse-bouche, generally a cold soup. For us it was a chilled golden beet soup, which tasted a bit like a nice, creamy sweet corn. One of the add-ons was the pâté de campagne, a blend of pork and fatty liver. Paired with a dijon mustard and fresh sourdough bread, it was surprisingly elevated for such a simple dish. Next were a pair of fish dishes that were the highlights of the meal, including sierra mackerel with fennel and peach, and monkfish and smoked butter. The monkfish was a particular standout as it was coated with a dill sauce, and complimented with the sweetness of diced rhubarb and earthiness of hazelnuts. The monkfish featured a smoky and lightly spiced flavor. The dish was extremely well-balanced and paired sweet, savory, sour, spicy, and smoky to a tee. Really excellent. The octopus and yukon potato was an add-on - the octopus was extremely tender, not rubbery at all, and the potatoes were perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and soft like a mashed potato on the inside. The meal ended with a hanger steak which was solid, but compared to the other dishes, less extravagant. The dessert featured a rose sorbet, with milk foam and strawberries. As a whole, Mijoté dishes are simple, layered and extremely satisfying to eat. While presentationally may not blow you away, the taste will leave you feeling satisfied. The blend of French and Japanese culinary tradition and cuisine, Mijoté is comforting, elevated, and balanced. Very rare to find fine-dining that tastes so great while also feeling homey at the same time. If in SF, absolutely worth a visit.

Now it's sixteen years later. After an early start to a Sunday Valkyries game, my friend brought us here for a post game dinner. After finding a parking space a block away, we walked up a little after 6:30 pm. When I reached the entrance, I noticed the sketch board and wrote my name below the names and guest numbers already there. When I asked the hostess, she told me it was likely a twenty to thirty minute wait. The dining room was packed as well as the sidewalk tables and outdoor dining structure. Being hungry and antsy, I walked the various tables to observe the service progression to estimate when we'd be seated. About 35 minutes later, we were seated at the sidewalk table next to the entrance and given menus. It's been a while so a menu study was needed. After some discussion, we decided on our meals and agreed to share bites of each other's food. First came the Acme French baguette and butter (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=b_xeRM764lejQiCnELp7OA), a necessary vehicle to sop any gravy or sauce. Two of us had the French onion soup (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=rJ9tQeC9Al9A0yCiHnA3Fw); it was as I remember, hearty broth chocked with tasty onions with gooey stretchy cheese underneath a nicely browned top. Their staple is consistent with what I remember. My friend ordered the Les Moules 24, poulette (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=ZgxJSrYmiEuwipp8uvkJHA), garlic, shallots, bacon, white wine, cream, parsley; the mussels were good, most if not all opened shells in a variety of sizes. The sauce or broth is the key especially with the baguette slices to enjoy the delicious flavors. For my main meal, i had the pork chop (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=tk0gypyufB2AL0olq-KPHA), Brussels sprouts, bacon, apple cider mustard sauce, suggested and cooked medium; I really enjoyed this as it had a nice outside sear while the meat was tender and still juicy after I cut in. The flavors from the accompaniments paired well and the portions were generous. In fact, a fellow diner mostly ate the accompaniments as our shared format in trying the other dishes filled my tummy. I tried a few bites of my friend's roasted duck confit, French fries (subbed from potatoes gratin), haricot vert, port reduction; sorry, no photo as this disappeared relatively quickly; the duck was tender and fork tender with a smoky flavor as it came right off the bone. I also tried another diner's fettucine, creamy white wine sauce, mushrooms (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=X5em6PctUtXUbiuM7uLmPg); the balance of sauce to pasta was perfect and you know me and mushrooms. It was tasty and is definitely hearty, portions and taste wise. As we dined, more diners added their names to the wait list until there were only two names left when we left around 8:30 pm. The guests were a mix of neighborhood locals and sports fans who came from events since Chase Center and Oracle Park are nearby. I saw a table with guys wearing Giants and Braves jerseys. Thanks to J. Garen who waited on our table and the bus staff who cleared empty plates and bowls and refilled out water glasses. Big thanks for Naomi, the hostess, who kept all waiting guests updated and kept a watchful eye to make sure the tables turn efficiently. As we left, we greeted waiting guests in Valkyries jerseys and we briefly talked about the game and, of course, gave our "Go Valks" cheer. Looking forward to our next meal here.

As everyone knows, we're foodies, and we thought that coming to Gary Danko would be a very special memorable meal here in the city, and while there were certainly positive moments of our two hour dinner, overall, I would not return. We arrived a bit early for our 6pm reservation, and we were seated promptly at a deuce in the side, dimly lit dining room. The decor was all mirrors and dark abstract paintings - heavy, and a tad depressing. My mom sat in the booth and I took the chair. I could see my mom, and a door to the street that was diagonally to my left, and it was a bit off-putting because at one point a pedestrian used the door as a mirror, and she was picking her teeth. A curtain to shield this vestibule from the dining area would be a welcome addition. Additionally, GD's flowers are lovely, and I appreciate the attention to detail there, but the extremely tall arrangement next to our table was all vase and the pretty flower arrangement was so close to the ceiling that all I could see was water unless I craned my neck upwards to peer at the blooms. Anyway, the dining experience commenced as soon as we sat down, when the spring pea gazpacho amuse bouche was brought to the table. It was refreshing, but nothing overwhelming. It really felt rushed, and this too, set the tenor for the evening. Despite my reservations, we took a few minutes to peruse the menu, and then decided on the four course option. I ordered: Glazed Oysters - Deliciously buttery, extremely buttery - in fact, butter is the primary ingredient in the majority of the dishes. If you don't like butter, don't come here! Lobster Risotto -tasty & generous portion-size Roast Maine Lobster - Also buttery, I did not need the shells to be on the plate as they did not add anything to the dish, and instead got in the way of enjoying the buttery potato puree. Shells are not a garnish. Chocolate Souffle - with dark chocolate and vanilla sauce - I wanted top layer to be a little crispier, and it was a little too soupy - it needed more time in the oven. Mom ordered: Tuna Carpaccio - Fresh and simple - her favorite dish. Scallops - Too salty and there were only two scallops, disappointing. Duck - Very salty, unattractive plate - Duck was prepared well but the crust it was smothered in took away the fine flavor of the duck itself. She could not finish the sides due to the saltiness. I told one of the servers about this, and nothing was done. No apology, nada. Chocolate Souffle - Same notes as me, too soupy and crust not crisp enough. We each had a glass of Prosecco to accompany the meal, and it was fine. Gill was our lead server and he did a good job of taking care of us. Overall, the service was very good, and I do want to recognize the folks working on the floor for their attentiveness. My bread plate and water glass were always full, and I appreciate that I did not want for anything while in this restaurant. Gill even showed me the way to the ladies room, and opened the door for me, which was a first. The little pastries that were given to us after the souffle were cute, but we had no room for them, so we had to have them boxed. We also appreciated the little pineapple cream cakes that were given to us as a parting gift. I really had high hopes for this restaurant, but upon reflection, Gary Danko did not deliver the experience that I expected from an establishment with this price point. I have had absolutely perfect meals before at places like 11 Madison Park, Gramercy Tavern, Le Cirque, and the former La Grenouille in NYC, and the Ritz in Paris among others, where attention is paid to absolutely very detail of the dining experience from start to finish and even beyond. I guess I should have known better to come here when they lost their Michelin star, but again, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. I will not make this mistake again.

I came here for lunch with colleagues on a Wednesday afternoon. We were a group of 10 and they had…read moreus seated against the wall with the booth seating and combined tables. The decor was minimal and nice, and definitely felt like a more upscale lunch spot. A majority of the group ordered the chicken sandwich which everyone said was delicious! The duck and steak frites were also a highlight for the group. I got the BLT croissant sandwich, which was tasty but I honestly didn't love their fries. The portions were huge and overall we were happy with our lunch! Service was phenomenal and they navigated serving a large party well. Even on a random Wednesday there were a ton of customers. I definitely want to come back for dinner and to try more of their menu items.

This is such a cute place in San Francisco. It had the perfect Paris vibe - great food, amazing…read morebread, excellent wines. The waiters don't rush you (just like in France). The lady servicing water kept coming to do refills - without me asking - that's incredible service for a small place with limited staff. The duck confit exceeded my expectations. I loved the bread and butter. The Salmon was rare and very tasty . The cauliflower was well flavored and mixed very well with the other ingredients. We didn't have enough room for dessert - I will come back to try the French onion soup and mussels in white wine.
