I came here for happy hour with a few coworkers on a Tuesday. The small parking lot was mostly full but I was able to get a close spot. We ordered the guacamole, fish tacos, nachos, and carnitas tacos to share off the happy hour menu. We also shared the empanadas which were my personal favorite. My party ordered a variety of cocktails which seemed to be great because I heard no complaints and the orders kept flowing. My Zocalo Michelada was the perfect amount of sour. I was actually planning to bring my family to Zócalo for a special dinner because it's one of the nicer and more well-known restaurants in Sacramento. The location itself is beautiful, upscale, and honestly looked like the perfect place for a graduation dinner. But before making the reservation, I noticed the giant "Conditional Pass" sign posted on the door. Of course I stopped to read it. The listed issues included: * improper employee handwashing * improper food holding temperatures And honestly... that completely changed my mind. I understand restaurants can have off days and inspections happen all the time, but seeing those specific violations at a place considered "higher end" immediately made me uncomfortable about spending that kind of money there, especially when I was planning to bring my kids. The restaurant itself LOOKS gorgeous. I even took photos because the atmosphere and exterior are beautiful. But personally, cleanliness and food safety matter more to me than aesthetics, and seeing those violations posted publicly made me decide to hold off on making reservations until those issues are fully corrected. I like to describe Zocalo as "upscale" Mexican food. Some of the most consistent things about Zocalo are their atmosphere and their top-notch margaritas. Seriously some of my favorite margaritas I've ever had. I love how they incorporate seasonal flavors in them as well. I've been to this Zocalo location many times over the years and have had mixed experiences with their service. Usually they're pretty attentive and on-top of things. Post-Covid in the QR menu only era we had some really bad service that left a bad taste in our mouth and kept us away for a while. We've since been back, and it's been much better. Glad that they're back to offering paper menus as well. My favorites here are the enchiladas and the fish tacos. They're always great! I love their chips, salsa, and bean dip as well. They are on the higher end of the price spectrum for Mexican food, partly why I describe them as "upscale." The food and drink quality seem to be pretty consistently good between locations as well. Overall, this a solid Sacramento go-to restaurant. read more

Out of all the Zócalo locations in Sacramento area this one is easily my favorite. The decor, the energy, the layout, the architecture, every detail is just beautifully done. I've been here several times, and every visit is consistently a great experience. On our most recent visit with my family, we had Katie as our server, and she was amazing! So warm, attentive, and genuinely made us feel taken care of. It was one of my colleague's first time there, and she really made it a memorable experience for them. The food never disappoints! I had the wet burrito with their habanero salsa (a "secret" you have to ask for), and it was incredible. The drinks are just as good, strong, well made, and always on point. Decided to swing by for their Happy Hour recently for the first time and boy was I pleasantly surprised. My partner n I order a nice spread with a couple of margaritas... 9.5/10! Zocalo has always been one of my favorite spots in Sacramento for Happy Hour (HH). I received a coupon for a free entree in the mail, so I went ahead and planned a solo date for myself. Of course I went during Happy Hour to sweeten the deal. I started off with their Ceviche de Guaymas - Shrimp ($12 HH) and Mango Fresco Margarita ($10 HH). The ceviche was very fresh and flavorful, but difficult to eat with the chips served so I ended up using the ones that are served with their complimentary black beans and salsa. Next I ordered the En Mole Enchilada ($26), which is one of my favorites! It comes with either 2 or 3 enchiladas ($2 difference) and rice/black beans. Also ordered the Blackberry Margarita ($10 HH)... never disappoints. I decided to end the night with the Siete Leguas Anejo ($12 HH). The host came to check to see how the service was. My waiter was friendly and attentive, so there were no complaints from me. I was later surprised with a small tasting of their flan, which was the icing on the cake. I've been to Zocalo a number of times and I wanted to give the mole enchilada a second chance. Maybe at the time I didn't understand & appreciate the complex flavors of mole well enough. Being Indian myself, I regularly eat a cuisine that has complex flavors. The mole was a bit sweet but very complex. It somewhat reminded me of tamarind used in Indian food. I appreciated how the mole complemented the flavorful chicken within the enchilada. It was a great flavor and I really liked it this time around. In addition to the mole, I tried the other two sauces- Rojas and Guanajuato. They also had their unique complex flavors that were delicious. I would like to say I have been here a few times and my fiance favors the other location better. We signed up for their Casamigos event while having dinner and the Opentable reservation was not working and with a few back and fort the manager, we figured it out. This is a beautifully decorated restaurant with great food and drinks! We immediately got seated for the 3 of us. We were given water and some delicious chips and salsa with beans to begin with... delicious!!!!!! The texture and flavor of the chips is everything I love!!! I got three different chicken enchiladas and I honestly couldn't tell you which one I liked more!!! The tacos are delicious (although my friend said it was too saucy... that's what I liked most about it) everything was fresh and the service was great. It was our first time there and when the servers found out they went out of their way to welcome us and bring us a sample to try -- mini conchinita pibils which were so yummy. Our server doesn't know the ingredients since I am allergic to jalapeños and he told me there want any in the guacamole but my son told me it was listed on the menu. Thank goodness I didn't eat them. It is also in the salsa and I have a feeling it was in the black bean dip. I tasted a kick so I just stop since my throat was feeling it after a few bites. If you have allergies to jalapeños be careful. I got the carnitas tostada and it was like a crispy taco I thought it would have more lettuce but it's just like a hard taco flat.
