CHECK YOUR BILL!!. I recently dined at Elyse in San Jose and wanted to share a mixed experience. First, the positives -- the food was genuinely very good. The dishes were well-prepared, flavorful, and thoughtfully presented. The overall ambiance was also enjoyable, making it a nice spot for a dinner out. Unfortunately, the experience took a concerning turn at the end of the meal. Our bill came out to $86.42, and I handed my credit card to the waiter. Within seconds (thanks to my card alerts), I received a notification that $103.92 had been charged. When the waiter returned with the receipt, there was no mention of any discrepancy. After waiting a few minutes to see if it would be addressed, I brought it up myself. The waiter appeared flustered and then claimed he had accidentally charged me for someone else's food. That explanation didn't align with the itemized bill I was given, which made the situation feel questionable. He assured me that it would be corrected and that I should see the adjustment in a few days, which I'll be watching closely. Mistakes can happen, but the lack of transparency and the fact that it wasn't proactively disclosed is what left a bad impression. Being overcharged without explanation -- and having to catch it myself -- is not something I expect when dining out. I'd consider coming back for the food, but I'd definitely be more cautious when it comes to the bill. read more

Final Thoughts: 2.50/5 My girlies and I went here for a simple dinner and to try it out. Very Asian fusion, specifically French-Vietnamese. Seems fine-ish dining vibes with the dim lights and modern interior that they have. While the whole experience itself was quite nice, the food is not the best and perhaps should still be in the works. It leans so much on trying to be Asian fusion, but the execution isn't there yet for me. Will push the 3 star today given the overall experience we had. Food: Prime Rib Phở (NO MSG): 3.0/5 This was the entrée that we shared. They give around 3 to 5 pieces of meat, which isn't the most ideal thing to see. The meat is tender though, so that's a plus. Given the cut of it, I really wouldn't expect anything less of this though. Speaking of see though, the presentation lacks a lot for me. There wasn't too much color in the bowl. Really just broth, the noodles, and the meat placed on top. Essentially that's all it is, but there's no pop of anything to it. The flavor of the broth is quite good though. It's a lighter, but deep flavor. Will attribute this to some kind of bone meat that they used versus loading it with MSG. The noodles were overcooked and more on the soft side for me. Not much of a bite overall. Grilled Pork Spring Rolls: 1.5/5 This was really underwhelming for me. The grilled pork was nothing extravagant. Crispy eggroll wrapper roll inside was stale. Lacking in body and shape. Each of the rolls were really small and thin and lacking a lot of the filling. Usually I find that other places will overstuff it with vermicelli and vegetables because those are the more inexpensive ingredients in the roll. Here, the proportions were balanced in a sense, but lacking in size. Their sauce is what gets me. I can understand the experimentation, but I do prefer the typical sauce that is used. Perhaps doing a variation of this sauce may be better versus changing it to a completely different sauce. This sauce was a spicy kaffir lime leaf sauce and the tartness and sour flavor just overwhelmed the whole dish, so it became less appetizing for me. Belgian Fries: 3.5/5 These were honestly my favorite item here. Umm...I can't say they're anything extravagant. They were super crispy and the right size for me. Some potato without being too starchy on the inside. The sauce is a truffle aioli and that was truly the star of the show. Most of the rating will be regarding the dipping sauce. It was very rich and the flavors were very balanced. The combination of the truffle with the garlic flavor contributes really well to the dish. Honestly comparable to Cajun fries. Shrimp Mango Ceviche: 2.0/5 Fourth item was also not my favorite at all. The curing sauce was just so tart and sour that it took so much away from the dish itself. Aesthetic wise, was very underwhelming. In my opinion, this would have looked better served inside of a rounder bowl?? versus a shallow plate. The plate just makes it look half eaten given the serving size. The chips were just chips, so nothing extravagant. Balance of shrimp to vegetables appears appropriate though. --------- Quality: Fresh The food items did come out hot. The fries were crispy. They claim their pho broth takes hours to make and I can only take their word from that. Waiters and waitresses seem genuine, so I shall trust them on that. Food appears to be fresh, so no concerns here. Price: Quite steep; $$$ The prices here are quite steep. With what I was served, the prices seem to lean more on the expensive side. I can understand that some ingredients are more pretentious, but I really can't say I would pay this much for what was served. Range is around $8 to $16 for smaller dishes and $20 to $40 for the entrees. Service: Amazing; A+ The service that we were provided today was amazing. The waitress and waiters are very nice and super attentive. They checked on us a few times after all the foods came out and refilled our waters as needed. When we were deciding what foods to order, they were also really patient in going through some of the food choices with us. Ambiance: Fine dining vibes The space really isn't that big and there are really only a few tables inside. The space is big and the ceilings are high, which again, leads me to feel that this place has the fine dining vibes. Interior is quite dim lit and has this calming and warm vibe to it. Location/Parking: Downtown Area/Parking Downtown San Jose is probably all I need to say for people to understand what I mean. IFKYK kind of a deal. I can't say the location is in a bad place per se because it is around this line of other restaurants and stores. The parking is terrible though and perhaps you will find yourself paring at the parking structures for a more affordable cost or a closer one for a more expensive price. The parking lot I chose is free for the first 90 minutes and then they start charging. For one of the closest parking lots, my friend paid $20+ for her ticket. read more

My husband and I came in for an early Valentine's Day dinner on Friday, February 13. We were greeted immediately by the host and shown to our table (we had a reservation). A few minutes later, our server came, apologizing profusely for our wait. We really didn't have a wait at all, just enough time to start browsing the menu, but I took this as a sign that they take pride in prompt service. We started with a generous serving of the mussels. They do not skimp here! The broth was very tasty with the lemongrass giving it the Vietnamese flair. Kind of odd that there was no bread to soak up the broth (even our server commented on this before we had a chance to, "especially at a French restaurant!"), but I am not a bread person so it didn't negatively affect my experience. I ordered the wagyu and my husband had the lamb. I had made a mental note to ask for the chimichurri (choice between mushroom sauce and chimichurri) but when placing my order, I completely forgot that detail. It seems the mushroom sauce is the default. The server didn't ask which I wanted and that was what I was given. The portion size was fairly small, which was fine for me. Unfortunately both my steak and my husband's lamb were overcooked, but overall we were satisfied with our entrees. There were several different servers/staff who came to our table throughout our visit. I can understand why this makes sense especially on a night where the house was full. The only challenge with this for me was I felt like I needed to wait for our "main" server to check on us to order a second drink, but unfortunately she did not come until we were almost done with our meal. Everyone else was either dropping off or clearing plates from our table. The ambiance was lively and what I would consider to be elevated casual. Our table was a bit off to the side which gave us privacy, but my only view was an exit door (and my handsome husband of course). If the table had been shifted 90 degrees, it would have been a nice view of the dining room and kitchen. When leaving, the host/owner(?) opened the door for us and wished us a happy Valentine's Day. It was a great date night out and I would definitely recommend this restaurant, despite the somewhat nitpicky things I discussed in my review. read more

December 18th 2024 came here on a Wednesday night a little after 5:00 p.m. using an Open table reservation. Turned out it didn't have to have a reservation as a place was empty. The $13 potato onion vichyssoise was a very thick and Rich soup full of flavor and very filling. Haven't had soup this tasty in years. The $39 glaze sea bass was soft and deliciously flaky textured white fish with a very sweet sauce to add flavor to an otherwise bland whitefish. The only drawback was that the portion size was about 4 oz the tops and would have left me starving for more. My $41 beef bourguignon was rich and tender beef on bone in a wine sauce and was exceptionally tasty. This place was not too far from the now vacated back a yard Jamaican chicken. Great ambience with a statue of the Eiffel Tower along with pictures at night of the structure in Paris. Overall, a solid place in spite of some culinary inflation in the menu descriptions. The mains while good, didn't blow me away but the fries... the fries... + belgian fries / $8 A tad oversalted but very addictive. Aioli was good but was actually fancy mayo rather than the real stuff which packs a garlic punch. + wagyu picanha champignon / $45 Australian grading so don't expect Japanese wagyu. It was extremely beefy and tender, cooked perfectly to the requested medium rare. Mushroom demi was good but should've gotten the chimmi. Broccolini and pomme puree were also good, but the pomme should have been way richer. You're supposed to feel guilt while eating it. It was more like fancy, smoother mashed potatoes than real pomme puree. + short rib bourguignon / $43 Likely prepared well but just tasted like beef stew to me from tasting my friend's dish. We tried this place for the first time on a recent trip to San Jose. We weren't really sure what to expect but wanted something upscale-ish with great food but not quite, fine dining with an overly formal or stuffy atmosphere. I think this place was pretty perfect. We made a reservation but it was not necessary as there was only not one other table when we arrived. Other than that, it was empty. Everyone we interacted with here was so friendly. The hostess, our server and the bartender provided great service and helped make our evening special. The food was very good. Especially the short rib! Although not really a tart, the mushroom tartlet was tasty. It's more of a puff pastry with a delicious mushroom sauce. I also really enjoyed the steak with chimichurri. It was a little small but I wasn't super hungry so it worked out. The spring rolls were fantastic. Little flavor bombs. The cocktails here were very good and they have a pretty solid wine list. Oh my! Just say that they're temporarily closed until the end of May 2026, so we lucked out having the chance to eat here last Friday 05-01-2026 for the first time. First off, great service! Upon arriving the hostess greeted us and asked if we had a reservation. When we told her yes and gave our first name, she immediately said our last name without looking down and seated us. Within moments our server, wish I remembered his name because he was awesome!, also greeted us and introduced himself. He didn't rush us or anything but politely asked if we wanted something to drink other than water. Then he took our order and everything came out in good time. The food was yum with great flavor and the space had a lively scene without it being crowded. So fun to see the double bar that has an opening to the dining room. Everyone was super friendly and wait staff totally professional and helpful. We look forward to come back and to maybe even host a private event since the have a room that can fit about 24 people. read more

My cousins invited me here to celebrate my engagement. The restaurant was located downtown near the VTA lightrail, which is convenient even though my fiancé drove us down and we walked to the restaurant from a nearby parking garage on 3rd street. We were greeted as soon as we got in and seated with my cousins. The waitress gave us our menus and asked if she could start us off with an appetizer or some drinks, but we asked for a few more minutes to decide. We eventually settled on garlic noodles and their Brussel sprout salad. We saw good things about their garlic noodles in previous yelp reviews, and they were excellent: good garlic flavor, some heat from the extra jalapeños they gave us on the side, and a good portion size for sharing. The Brussel sprout salad was amazing. I'd never eaten Brussel sprouts that I actually liked before, and these knocked me out of the park. They were a little crispy on the outside and had a sweet and savory glaze. My fiancé ordered a bowl of pho which he enjoyed. The portion size was incredibly massive and the quantity of meat was good. I thought the pho was just okay and pho of similar quality could be found at other establishments around SJ. I decided on the roasted lamb, medium. The vegetables on the side were roasted to perfection, he mashed potatoes were soft and fluffy, and the lamb was succulent. We finished with some Belgian dark chocolate lava cake. It's actually not sharing size, but the whole table just took a few bites anyway. It came out fresh and I took a piping hot mouthful but it was delicious. The flavor profile was excellent with the bitterness of the dark chocolate and the tartness of the raspberry coulis paired with the sweetness of the vanilla ice cream. The service was good and the waitress would come by periodically to check how we were doing and refill our waters. I wasn't a huge fan of how the paper menus were just left on our table as more and more dishes were brought out and the menus just ended up being coasters. We eventually just set them on a barrel nearby to keep our table from getting too cluttered. The decor was simple with most of their influences from France (including a huge mural of the Eiffel Tower on a wall). Amazing food and interior. From the moment you step in past the bamboo painted windows, you feel that you are walking into luxury. There is a beautiful decor on the wall with the Eiffel tower, making you feel that you are in Paris. The service was very kind and the food came out quickly. Truffled potato and onion vichysoisse - 2/5 thought this would taste like French onion soup but was nothing like it, tasted almost like water to be honest but surprisingly the picky toddler was a fan Coq au vin - 5++/5 AMAZING!! You can really taste the wine and the chicken tears so easily in the mouth with flavor. Would totally come back here just for this dish. Wagyu picanha champignon - 5+/5 also a solid winner, meat we asked for medium well and it was the right texture without being overly chewy and the sauce paired well with the meat. Appreciated the mashed potatoes and the broccolini. Prime rib pho - 5/5 great tasting broth that is more flavorful than regular Vietnamese restaurants, with plenty of noodles. We paid overall ~$130. Parking nearby is difficult, would recommend the Wells fargo parking garage nearby that was $12 on a weekend day, compared to $20 or $30 for other nearby parking spots. We ordered drinks, the mushroom tartlette pastry, short ribs, and black cod. Everything was delicious. I would have liked more of the sides but the main entrees were filling. And as mentioned DELICIOUS! A chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream was brought out with a candle - a lovely surprise. Thank you, baby! I would got a 4.5 star rating. We made reservations for a party of 6 people for dinner and got seated right away even though 2 of our party wasn't there yet. Staff were nice and refilled water quickly. Food came out slow but i think it was because they were waiting for the whole party to be seated. Food was good, nothing life changing but good. Pho was kinda too sweet for my taste. Had a great experience here this evening. I wanted to treat my coworkers to dinner so made a reservation for a large group a few weeks prior. Making the reservation was a tad difficult since the my did not respond to my email or inquiry from their website and had to call. We arrived for our early dinner and was seated promptly. The place slowly filled up as the night went on. We ordered an assortment of appetizers and entrees. Raved about dishes were their Belgium fries, mussels, and the chicken dish. Most of my coworkers ordered the shaken filet and rice. I had the short rib. Everyone throughly enjoyed their food. They also have a nice cocktail menu. I don't drink but all of my coworkers had a drink and they all seemed to enjoy their drinks. Service was prompt and courteous. We all had a great time. Service was attentive and super friendly they went out of their way to make me feel welcome. Started with a Sicilian red which was nice and light. Bar man told me that in Italy, the further south you go, the lighter the reds. With white wine it is the opposite. Started with mushroom tartlet which was delicate and delicious. Super good I could had two! Followed with coq a vin which I think is a tough dish to cook. It was perfectly executed and I really liked it. Excellent service and amazing quality food. The Brussel Sprouts were huge in portion for it being an appetizer! Delicious, crispy, and packed with acidic and savory flavor. The Shrimp Mango Ceviche was fresh and refreshing after how savory the Brussel Sprouts were. The Coq Au Vin was tender, pulled apart easily, juicy, and the mashed potatoes and vegetables complimented the dish beautifully! The Red Wine Reduction sauce was a little too potent for my liking but was still a great addition to the dish! Went here for a late Mother's Day and we were pretty impressed! The inside is nice, modern, and spacious. The servers were friendly and attentive and the food was pretty good! We got these things: Mushroom tartlette (5/5)- my absolute favorite of the night. Flaky puff pastry with creamy umami mushroom topping Mussels (5/5)- my brother and boyfriend's favorite of the night! Here's what I got: 1) mushroom tarlette: 7/10, nice and flaky with mushroom cream sauce. Presentation was beautiful. Flavor was good, I just wish it was warm. 2) Waygu Pichana: 9/10, the waygu was wonderful! Buttery, melt in your mouth! The sauce on top is well seasoned. Broccolini standard and garlic noodles were really good just a tad bit dry. 3) Black Sesame Panna Cotta: 8/10, mellow flavor, not too sweet. 4) Pear Elder flower: 8/10, slightly sweet and very strong. Went to Elyse on a Friday night date night. It's been on my list to try for a while and we chose to bite the bullet this time around. We got the Brussels, lamb chop (ribs), short ribs, and a chocolate lava cake. The Brussels were delicious. So good. The lamb was ok. I felt like it lacked flavor and salt. My partner liked her short ribs. The lava cake was good and a nice treat to cap the meal. The layout of the place is a bit strange. I don't mean it in a bad way, I mean I that it confused me. It's almost like the kitchen was and wasn't a focus. However, it's spacious, and cute. The service was good. We didn't want for anything and the staff was friendly. Since their "newer" space move, the service is seamless, cocktails inventive and well balanced, nice selection of interesting wines, and the food was flavorful and savory. The black cod was delicate and moist, with a llght but savory broth, and filet mignon Pho' and mushroom tartelette all excellent. This is the new location of the restaurant. You can't see what the restaurant looks like from the outside since the windows are covered. We also had trouble finding the entrance. Inside, there's a bar side and the dining room. The dining room is spacious but not too many tables. We enjoyed our meal here. The menu is French-Vietnamese but more French with some dishes with Vietnamese ingredients. We ordered the mussels to start that had Vietnamese herbs and fish sauce. It was really good. I've been wanting to try Élyse for a long time, even when it was formerly located on 2nd street. I finally got around to trying the restaurant when one of my really good friends was in town for the weekend. I made dinner reservations for a party of 3 at 6:15pm on a Saturday. We were running late ~15 minutes, but my husband notified the restaurant. The receptionist was cool about us being behind schedule and assured us that our table wouldn't be relinquished. When we finally got to the restaurant, I was surprised to find out different this new establishment was compared to its previous location. I remember it being small and intimate, but this new spot on 1st street was very open and spacious. I honestly didn't get the vibe. The place didn't really have much character to it. I felt like I was eating at a pop-up restaurant in a warehouse. That being said, I felt like the service and food made up for it. Overall service was great. Friendly and helpful staff members all around. Food came out in a timely manner. I enjoyed mostly everything I ate. We had two appetizers: mussels and side of fries with truffle aioli. The mussels had a unique sweetness and strong lemon grass flavor. The fries were excellent. I loved how crispy they were, and they must've been fried in a different kind of animal fat. The aioli had a great balance of truffle flavor that wasn't overpowering. My friend's prime pho was OK. I thought the broth had a heavy flavor like anise that I wasn't feeling. My and my husband's entrees were awesome though. My husband got the beef bourguignon, which was incredibly tender and fall off the bone. I lucked out and got the last wagyu picanha of the night, and it was THE BEST dish. The meat was fatty, flavorful, and perfectly medium rare. Great location! I was downtown SJ for a comedy show at Improv. We didn't have a reservation. We were able to walk in and got a table for 2 people at 5 pm when they opened. Looking for a GNO, I found this on yelp and lucky for us able to squeeze us 3 in on a Friday night. Anything Viet and French-fusion always stands out for me to try and I heard they moved locations. Since I haven't been to the new location this was fun to experience. Here's what we ordered to share: Appetizers: Shrimp Mango Ceviche ($17) This was refreshing to eat, the citrusy shrimp mixed on top of a crunchy shrimp cracker.. (wish there were more crackers) Mussels meuniere ($19) The mussels were packed with tons of herby flavors, this was really tasty. Braised Short Ribs Bourguignon ($41) The beef was super tender in a deep red wine sauce and veggies. This did not come with the Belgian style fries, so - one star. Glazed Seabass ($39) The fish was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. Veggies were on point. Garlic Noodles ($8) If i can just eat noodles all day it probably would be these. The noodles were the super flavorful and not too oily, topped with parmesan. Overall service was amazing, ambiance was beautiful, and this was plenty of food for us. The staff are all very friendly and welcoming. We ordered a couple of drinks, a strawberry mule and a signature cocktail. Both drinks were delicious and refreshing! My only note was that my mule was served in a tall glass instead of the usual "mule cup", but it was still good! For food, we ordered the pho and coq au vin. Both dishes were perfection. Had a fun girls brunch for Galentines. We loved everything on the menu so we decided to do a family style meal. Crabs Benedict- crab was fresh, English muffin soft and hollandaise sauce was perfect not too rich or heavy like many others. Steak n eggs - steak perfectly cooked medium rare. We asked for scrambled eggs (best I've ever had). Although eggs seem simple, it really takes a talented chef to make them perfect and they did! Loco Moco - perfect hangover dish! Food was ok. 1. Truffle fries. 3 stars. Basically, slightly crispy steak fries with a truffle aioli. 2. Jackfruit salad. 5 stars. Refreshing and delicious. 3. vichyssoise soup. 3 stars. Tasted good. Pricey for a purely liquid soup. 4. Rack of lamb. 3 stars. Tasty, but small portions on the lamb and not enough sides to go with it (smear of potatoes) 5. Coq. Au vin. 2 stars. Wife wasn't too happy with it. Not much potatoes and sides. 6. A9 Australian steak. 4 stars. Tasty, but fattiness level didn't match with an A9 rating that would be equivalent to A5 Japanese rating. We visited Élyse for a celebration - the food + service were both sooo good! I'd recommend making a reservation in advance; it was pretty busy on a Friday night. They serve French and Vietnamese fusion cuisine. We had a party of 4, so I was able to try a few items: + Mushroom Tartelette (4/5) ($14): The flavor profile on this was craaazy good. I felt like it needed a bit more filling vs. puff pastry though, but either way the mushrooms were delicious! + Mussels Meuniere (5/5) ($19): One of my fav items! The mussels tasted fresh and the hints of nuoc mam / fish sauce definitely shined through. + Jackfruit Salad (5/5) ($17): Super refreshing, the way the jackfruit and all of the herbs came together was great! + Braised Short Ribs Bourguignon (4/5) ($41): This definitely tasted like a spin on Vietnamese bo kho to me lol - the short ribs were fall off the bone tender, and I loved how rich the sauce tasted! It came with a side of fries that were just okay. + Black Sesame Pannacotta (5/5): SOOO good. The pannacotta was addicting and the black sesame flavor was very fragrant. The restaurant gave dark, intimate vibes good for a date or special occasion. They're located in DTSJ, so parking can be difficult. Visiting San Jose for an AI conference, I found Elyse by searching Yelp for a nearby restaurant. The food and ambiance were great. I really enjoyed the roasted lamb. Elyse had their soft opening at their new location. We almost didn't go because there is still no signage on the door and all the windows had grey covering as if it was closed. If we didn't notice the lights on we would have gone someplace else, but so glad we didn't. The server was very friendly. For now they don't have their liquor license but if you bring your own bottle of wine there is no corking fee. They even offered a complementary non alcoholic wine since they couldn't serve wine yet. As for the food, it excellent. We started with the MUSHROOM TARTELETTE Baked puff pastry topped with creamy mushroom, onion confit, salsa verde, and parmesan cheese. It was so light, crunchy, and savory. WOW what a way to start my meal. I ordered COQ AU VIN. Slow-cooked chicken quarters with red wine, mushroom, and onion confit. Served with garlic mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables. It was full of flavor and yummy!! My husband had the BRAISED SHORT RIBS BOURGUIGNON. Bone-in braised Angus beef short ribs served in red wine sauce with onion, carrot, garlic, herbs, and a side of Belgian style fries and was very happy with it. It was very tender and melted in your mouth. For dessert we shared the blackened sesame penna cotta with strawberries. It was very light and with a hint of sweetness. The sesames added a nice toasted crunch. I enjoyed it. The only reason I don't give Elyse 5 stars is it wasn't easy to find and when you walk in there is a smell. It could be left over from whatever was in the space before or the wood. I don't know. They could probably change the soap dispenser in the ladies room too instead of using a bottle that looks like something from the Dollar Tree. I wish the owners much success at the new location.
