The first time I came to 1201, it was for a diagnostic which they did but then asked if I would be interested in buying a custom built computer from them. I wasn't. For the second time I went asked if they can do a simple hard drive data transfer and re-install of the OS. Alan then tries to sell me again on buying a new computer, which I still did not want. After that he tells me that my computer is too old and that "it's our standard policy to avoid work on systems over ten years old." Even though on the site it states, "We work on all Windows 7 era and newer PCs and laptops." It seems to me that Alan was reacting to being insulted that I rejected his attempted selling of a new computer system. It annoyed me that he tried to do that again when all I wanted was a simple data transfer job done. So for being a little petty and unprofessional, I can't recommend 1201. read more

I'm pretty hard to impress with computer repairs. My dad was an HP computer engineer for 30+ years, so I'm used to getting expert help for free, no strings attached. Sadly, when I moved up to Portland, my computer-whiz father stayed down in CA. Where to go when phone advice isn't enough? My lack of enthusiasm for computer repair places was enough for me to keep an ill computer in a closet for months until my dad came up for the holidays and could take a look at it in person. He gave me his recommendation and explained his reasoning, but I never felt pressured in making my decision. These guys are the best in town. My laptop is the lifeblood of my business, when my computer went dead I thought I lost everything. They cloned my hard drive saving all my data and re installed a new hard drive with all my files included. I had a small problem with outlook and a few days after getting my laptop back they fixed it for free. The owner took it upon on himself to get my outlook back, even though it took him countless hours to manually reprogram. The front desk guy Blake is very knowledgeable and helps you go over your options making you feel comfortable. When you go into the Geek squad or whatever corporate computer repair place you feel like your getting ripped of every time. These guys are the shit. There is no comparison to any other computer repair shop I've ever been to. They don't hustle you or treat you like an idiot, they don't up-sell you and the prices are fair. I had an issue with a computer and they fixed it. I got home and a different issue popped up. I took the computer back to see if the two things were related. It didn't seem that they were: a mere coincidence. It turned out the second problem was tough to fix. The tech at 1201 put a huge amount of effort into getting it fixed. When I picked the computer back up the charge was: $0. The Tech said "We can't be totally sure we didn't cause this, so it's on the house." That's the sort of thing that keeps you coming back. Justin was brilliant. A friend of ours just passed away, and her husband found he was suddenly password locked out of her computer. The anti-virus software had rebooted the computer automatically, and after it restarted he was locked out. I cold called the top four companies off Yelp with good reviews, and Justin was the first to return my call (only two did at all). Justin let me bring in the computer the same day, and removed the password lock-out it in a few minutes. He then attempted not to charge me because of our friend's bereavement, even though this was the first time we had ever met (I insisted on paying though). Quick, competent, ethical, and obviously a damn good person. What more could you ask for? read more

The Newtonian law of universal gravitation should be expanded from simply two objects attracting one another to also include that water is attracted to fragile electronics, most notably mine when air drumming becomes too frantic. A splash of water that had clearly undergone years of ninja training for just this moment spilled onto the keyboard of my 2-year-old MacBook Pro, shorting some connections on its logic board and number keys. The folks at Apple, after trying a few things, said I should buy a new computer rather than attempt to have it repaired. Apple's estimate for the repair if I left it with them was between $500 and $700, with a lead-time of 2 to 4 weeks. I decided to see if anyone else in the Portland area could do better, and I'm glad I did! (Thanks, fellow Yelpers, for the reviews of 12:01). The good folks at 12:01 were very friendly, helpful, and upfront every step of the way, from the initial email, to dropping off my computer, to picking it up. The repairs cost only around $200 and took just over a week, meaning 12:01 saved me hundreds of bucks and weeks of waiting compared to Apple -- and I didn't need to buy a new computer. Eddie at 12:01 took care of some miscellaneous repairs while he worked on my logic board and keyboard, so my computer is now better than it was even before the spill. The Genius Bar might be okay for simple software issues and diagnoses, but remember their job is to balance customer loyalty with getting some people to buy new computers too soon. If I ever know someone who spills something on their computer, I'll tell them to skip Apple and go straight to 12:01. I've also been recommending them to my friends who have had to sit through my story of my computer's Phoenix-like rebirth as a fully functional devourer of my precious time. And now I'm recommending 12:01 to you, anonymous Yelp reader who is likely freaking out about your recently broken computer. (Side note: if you want to graduate from anonymous Yelp reader to my friend, I can be plied with ale.) Anyway, I don't want to understate how enjoyable Eddie and Blake at 12:01 were to deal with. I took my 2008 Macbook to these guys, and I'm super impressed with the results. My computer is old and acted like it. It ran *very* slowly and the battery was shot. I was about to throw in the towel and drop major dinero on a new Mac, but I decided to give these guys a try. I just got my computer back, and it's running like a charm! After my screen randomly went black, I tried everything I could to fix it myself. The internet recommended holding down the power button while unplugged and the battery was out. That worked for a while, but the screen went black again. I ran my Norton scan and nothing. Once it completely stopped working, I ran Norton's rebootable recovery tool and still nothing. So I got online and this place had great reviews, so I brought my laptop into their store. The guys were super friendly and let me know they'd call before doing any repairs. Got a call a few days later to let me know my computer ran for 2 straight days without black-screening and was ready to pick up. They charged me $65 and let me know that if it did it again, I could bring it back free of charge. I brought it home and within an hour the screen went black on me again. I called them and they told me to bring it back in. When I got there, the guy asked if I put it on my lap (yes I did) and mentioned that my laptop has crappy fans. I decided to buy a cooling fan and give that a shot. It ran for almost two hours and the screen went black again. So I brought it back to the store and dropped it off. A few days later I got a message with the bad news - something on my motherboard had gone bad and would cost $250 to repair (which, from other people's experiences that I read online, is a great price - sounds like Geek Squad tries to charge close to $800!). But I decided it was not worth it on an almost 4 year old laptop. On my last visit to pick up my laptop, they knew me by name. My laptop had given them a run for their money and it sounded like they enjoyed the challenge of figuring out what was wrong with it. You can tell they like their jobs there. :) read more

I've used 12:01 twice in the last 18 months, and both times Justin was fast, accurate and well-priced. The first time I had a virus on my PC laptop, and another local repair place couldn't fix it. When I got my computer back from that other company it was worse off than when I got it. Justin repaired my damaged software in just a few hours and the computer was back in shape. A few weeks ago I wanted to reinstall Windows and wipe my hard drive. IBM sent me a boot disk that didn't work, then they re-sent it, and it still didn't work. Justin took a look at the computer and had it fixed by that afternoon, in addition to reinstalling a new hard drive that was about to go out. I like to think of myself as computer literate but when I get a computer problem that I can't figure out I just call up 1201 and they usually get it fixed right away using remote service. They were able to fix a virus infection my system had when none of the off the shelf products would work. Justin was also able to get data off a hard drive that my system would no longer read. I would highly recommend them to anyone. UPDATE: I recently wanted to build a computer for my work that could be accessed by my customers. I didn't want to worry about Viruses or people installing strange applications on the system. Left these people my HP 840 G3 computer to fix a cracked screen. They said they could fix it. However, they returned it the next day, broken, shorted out RAM and motherboard, with the screen removed. They told me they couldn't fix it. Completely unsatisfactory. My computer was at least usable when I gave it to them the day before. I had to search Portland for another shop to fix their mistakes. A complete hassle and waste of my valuable time. I will never use them again and will tell my friends to not even consider them. read more

Very impressive! It all started off a bit rocky because I loaded up my giant and very heavy super tower desktop and braved nasty rush hour traffic to go clear across town because of the good reviews. When I showed up they were closed at least 20 min early and it was all for naught. I was frustrated! But Justin called me back an hour later, apologized and offered to knock a few bucks off service. He had left early for a service call, so I recommend calling ahead. Honestly, the apologetic call made all the difference, and impressed me. I dropped it off with them, agreed to pay the very reasonable $50 rush fee (trust me, it was a bargain) and they got it back to me all fixed in less than 24 hours. Business trip salvaged! All this despite the fact that I had given them the wrong password. They called me, checked several passwords I tried and helped me reset it. Not only are they great at what they do, they are extremely nice and helpful. Allow me to join the chorus...12:01 deserves all the stars. My friend (who is an elder) had some sort of yearly contract with a "PC Care" place (based in India). Apparently, whenever things went wrong he could call them and they could fix things remotely. Last week my friend's computer froze up, he called PC Care and after many hours of "tinkering" around they finally managed to screw up his computer completely and totally, resulting in a black screen.
