This place is worth 6 stars, not 5. We came for brunch and got their blue crab Benedict, peaches and cream waffles, steak &eggs, and quiche. The service was so professional, and they maintained all the necessary Covid precautions! I've never had such delicious waffles before. The steak was cooked to perfection with a delicious chimichurri sauce and lovely crisp potatoes. The quiche was fluffy and the salad came with edible purple flowers! Holy noise! The restaurant wasn't even half full and I was almost shouting across the table to my wife (party of two) for date night, also we are in our 30's. The food was good: wife got a NY strip and I got the pheasant, both were good, wouldn't say worth the money though. This was my first experience at 1889 but all I can say is it's absolutely exceptional. From the food to the service everything was amazing, especially the crab cakes and steak. For Missoula, I'm extremely impressed with not only the atmosphere but the ability to bring such great dishes to the table. I will definitely be back! read more

Good steak but for the price I have had better. I was very disappointed that they wouldn't substitute a veggie for the potatoes and we had to pay extra for spaghetti squash. You shouldn't have to pay extra for a veggie on a $40 steak. Service was good. Drinks were good. read more

First and last visit. Ordered the simplest item on the menu. Baseball cut sirloin. Took almost an hour to get the meal. Also order the fried quail and a salad. The steak was very small and had absolutely no flavor. Could have been spam or chicken. The quail had so much breading on it you could not find the bird and it was not cooked enough. Still had blood inside. Now the grits served with the quail were very good and the Caesar salad was OK. To bad the Rib and Chop House didn't take this corner. The king crab legs were some of the best I have ever had! Very fresh and full of flavor. The Mexican Pharmacy cocktail was refreshing and delicious as well. Everything about this place is 5 stars. I highly recommend if you're looking for a date night idea or a delicious meal! read more

After waiting 45mins after our 8pm reservation. The food and service were less than satisfactory. The onion soup was way to sweet. The Quail special was tasteless and very disappointing. My friends fish was over cooked. The best part of the meal was the Brussels sprouts. Have had dinner here three times. It's pricey for the service, quality and ambiance. Walls of windows are cold and drafty. Service never quite right. Had one disastrous meal with friends, where steak overcooked, drinks and food coming at odd times, service was friendly but awkward. Came here with a good group of friends on a Saturday night. The staff was friendly. Two people ordered the prime rib steak, one ordered the steak frites, and I ordered the cob salad with a bowl of French onion soup and the crispy pork belly. They had a good selection of wine and beer. We did not order cocktails but a good list of fun drinks. Everyone enjoyed their food. This place is expensive but for a special night out I would recommend. The atmosphere and vibe of the restaurant is fun. The fire alarm did go off and we had to clear the restaurant. This did interrupt our dinner. Once we could go back inside the staff worked hard to make sure it didn't ruin our experience. read more

I read some less than stellar reviews, but I am glad I didn't take heed. I wanted to take the time to leave a review because my experience was great. I am a very discerning person (nice way of saying picky af) and come from a long line of people in the restaurant business. I started with the Malbec and my date had the Sangiovese. We went crazy on the appetizers so we just shared a filet and the brussel sprouts and everything was perfect. We ordered the Steak Tartar, oysters, the butter flight (first time seeing a butter flight on a menu!), and the Yellowtail Crudo which was a little zesty yellowtail tostada. It was all delicious. The oysters were like salty little delights of fresh ocean spray. The filet was tender and flavorful. The Tartar was incredible. We were too full to finish the brussels, but it was a crime because they were perfectly crisp little flavor bombs. We both moved to the Starmont Cab afterwords and it opened up in a beautiful bouquet. Our server was Matt, and he was very cool. He made us feel like we were all old friends. The atmosphere was a little....how do I say....cold. There is a lot of grey happening. I think tablecloths and some warm lighting might help, especially with these dreary days, but everything else was great. All in all this place deserves 5 stars. read more

Started with the oysters and crab cakes. Oysters were flown in this morning, fresh from Puget sound. Followed up with the French onion soup, which was slightly less than traditional but nothing less than delightful. For my entree I had the steelhead trout, which, when paired with the accoutrement was prepared exquisitely. I had the old fashioned with my meal and finished off with the gin fizz. We went in for our first experience. Let me first sum up my visit to they nickel and dime you for EVERYTHING! Coming to a nice restaurant I would have expected a basket of bread. Nope, not here it costs you 6.00 for bread if you want it. When they served the bread it came with three very very small pieces of butter. (Definitely not enough to put on the amount of bread it's served with). When I asked the staff if I could get some more butter, his response was, "ah, let me ask the chef to make sure that's ok." I was asking for some butter here and he made me seem like I was doing something wrong. We came to find out later that we were charged extra for that butter on top of the 6.00 we already paid for the bread. RIDICULOUS! We had the Caesar salad and French onion soup to start which were good. My husband had the steak and I had the butternut squash ravioli. The steak and ravioli were ok. The ravioli was definitely lacking seasoning. The ricotta inside and the noodles had barely any seasoning and I had to ask for salt to give it a lot more flavor. We got the lemon cake for dessert. Wouldn't get it again. Nothing special. Stingy on the raspberry sauce and the cake was very dense like a pound cake. They also don't have coke products. When my bill comes to over 100.00 I guess I just expected more and not to be charged for a little more butter. Would I return. Maybe if they got a lunch service. The French onion soup was the best part of the meal. the ambiance is nice but I think it's over priced for what it's worth. read more

First off, way over priced. Outrageously overpriced. The food was good, but not great. I might have considered a 3 star rating, but the atmosphere was a total buzz kill and something one essentially suffered through in order to get their meal. It literally was the loudest public space I've ever been to in Missoula and not what one would expect for a nice, expensive, and special occasion dinner. The acoustics are possibly the worst in the world. If, when you fork over $40 for a plate of pretty good but not great food, you expect a calm and pleasant atmosphere then this is NOT the restaurant for you. Cement flooring. Loud clanking. Staff friendly but extremely rushed. One lady takes your order and about 3 other people bring different items to the table at different times throughout the meal. We both honestly just had to get through the meal so that we could get the hell out of that loud environment. Honestly, with their prices they could afford at least some indoor outdoor carpeting or some foam blocks on the ceiling to dampen some of the noise. The ambiance and decor is very much like having an extremely overpriced and mediocre meal in an airport restaurant that's trying to get you the hell out of there as quickly as possible. Likely won't go back, unless I either bring a pair of ear plugs or have natural sensorineural hearing loss; and/or win the lottery. read more

My husband and I were excited to try 1889 and made a dinner reservation for our 10-year wedding anniversary. After being seated, we recognized the manager and said hello. She brought us drink menus and took our drink order. A good while later, our server, a guy who we don't know his name because he never actually made any sort of introduction, stopped by and said, "I see you have your drinks, cool" and walked away. Then, after another long period, he came by and asked if we were ready to order. I asked a few questions about the menu, to which he was obviously annoyed. Expectations are higher when you're paying the prices they request and at this point, he and the restaurant were not even close to meeting them. He seemed to really not be interested in waiting on us and that was putting a sour taste in our mouths, but we wanted to enjoy our anniversary so we hoped it would get better. I did not. It only got worse. A lady at a table next to us was struggling to crack open her crab leg. Our server walked up to her, took the crab leg in both of his hands, cracked it open and put it back on her plate. I was appalled! First, servers should never touch food on a guests plate. Second, I am very allergic to shellfish. I told the manager and explained my serious concern of cross-contamination and inappropriateness. She assured me "he washed his hands." Okay. But, not really. Then, after a very long time of us not getting our food, I asked for the manager again. I explained that 2 tables had come in after us and not only did they get their food before us, they were done and getting it boxed up to go - we hadn't even gotten our food. She went to check and found out that our server never even entered it into the computer. I let her know that we had a babysitter, it had been over 2 hours and we had to leave. She had our food boxed up and threw in a dessert. I don't eat dessert and neither does my husband. Plus, I wasn't expecting to pay so much money for a cold steak at home. She said she would take care of it and compensate us. She took off $18 on a $160 tab - we didn't even get served our dinner. What were we paying for? My husband has been in the restaurant business for over 30 years and has been a manager for a substantial amount it and said this experience was, by far, the worst restaurant experience he's ever had anywhere. She should have comped our entire bill, considering WE WEREN'T EVEN SERVED OUR DINNER. It's ridiculous. To say this is fine dining is a joke. If you want a better experience, go to Outback. read more
