Let's start by saying I usually go to the one in Stockbridge so I was excited when they opened in Mcdonough. This establishment needs to work on a lot of things. Service and food - hit or miss. The waitresses are nice, so no complaints about them. The food is saltyyyyy! The quality has gone down just since it opened. The prices are ridiculous for what you get. I won't even go into the drinks. I understand everything has gone up but if you are charging you should be delivering. I love the fact that they have a dj and are trying to bring a lounge to the square but they need to do better! I am disappointed and they don't seem to listen to their customers. The location was fantastic, decor was quaint and the wait staff truly delightful. I wish I could say the same for the food, but unfortunately, I can't. My first letdown was the extended breakfast hours until 3 PM--who really wants breakfast after 1:30? The grits were quite bland, and the meal itself was just a very basic breakfast, something you could easily whip up at home in no time. Perhaps the dinner is better. The menu looks great for dinner. My Wife and I are new residents of McDonough and we decided to have a meal, after working to set up our home, and not attempt to cook. We had been to the Square in McDonough and had food at one of the local restaurants, which was okay, but we decided to try a restaurant that seemed to have great patronage, "1942 on the Square", "BIG MISTAKE/NEVER AGAIN". We asked for seating on the inside, because outside customers are allowed to smoke, it took about 10 minutes to get a seat, and once inside, the service was slow and we had to wait for another 10 before being served. Finally we got a server whom took our order, and I gave explicit detaili about my order, which was wrong, we did not get anyone to address the order for 15 minutes, my Wife had eaten her entree, and I was told that "ALL SALES ARE FINAL", after asking for my wrongly prepared order to be taken off the bill. Spoke with the owner a few days later, and was told "IT'S A LEARNING EXPERIENCE". I am a media consultant, who hears complaints about "POOR BUSINESS PRACTICES", daily, never thinking I would be one getting treated "UNSATISFACTORY", and getting snide goodbyes. read more

Had dinner here with family and friends last night, we had a wonderful time. From the moment we entered, we felt welcomed and at ease. The staff (Briah and Josh especially) were so sweet and attentive. The appetizers (spring rolls, firecracker shrimp, and calamari) were yummy! We all had the Grouper plate...mmmm so good!! The food was delicious (one suggestion on the Mac-n-cheese was to add in other cheeses). Michael, the Manager, came over and was kind checking on our experience. The reason there aren't any pictures was that we were having such a wonderful, laid-back time, eating wonderfully delicious food and enjoying each others company within 1942 On The Square's welcoming and friendly atmosphere, that we forgot to take pictures!! Service was friendly and attentive. They gave me the best seat to watch the game. Food was AMAZING, way better than expected. I had the salmon BLT fried with honey glaze sauce instead of the jalapeno ranch sauce, with sweet potato fries. The best salmon sandwich I've ever had, hands down!! I have been to this establishment several times- I initially started with the location in Stockbridge however, when I was informed, they were opening a new location in the old "Starshine" restaurant, I was excited. This was closer to where I reside. Now to move forward the last two times I went I was in complete shock! The first encounter we arrived at around 9:45pm on a Saturday, in which they indicated that they do not close until 1 am- so we were happy, we were seated by the hostess, ordered our drinks-received them and we were waiting to order food only to be told by our waitress (after being there for over 30 minutes) that the kitchen was closed- because they were backed up. But here's the clincher when the waitress returned with our check for the two drinks, we ordered the tab was $60.00-- two drinks- now I know we ordered a double but..... 18% gratuity charge and there are no prices listed for the drinks unless it's a special.. Fast forward to this weekend which just also happened to be my birthday- I went to try again- because I understand that sometimes things happen.. We arrived and were seated immediately, we ordered everything all at once-- Shots for the birthday girl along with our food with more drinks.. It started raining so we asked to be moved under the awning or under one of the other covered tables. We were initially told that we had to see the hostess to be reseated- Okay, did not understand but okay- let's just say we played musical tables- only to be told we would not be able to be seated because they were seating customers currently arriving. We had been there for more than an hour, and although we had been given a glass of water and one drink (shots), we were still waiting for the remaining items we had ordered, which confused me. Now here is the next clincher, when the waitress returned, she apologized for the inconvenience as it related to the service and gave us our tab was $44- TWO SHOTS.. My husband and I rented a cabana order #10382468519 for 9/14/24 from 6-9 to celebrate our anniversary with friends and family. As soon as we arrived and started to set up, our server came over introduced himself and told us that the Manager wanted him to let us kow that they had another party at 9:30 and we would have to be out by 9. I advised him that we knew we our rental time was 6-9 and we would be our by 9. Our friends arrived and we commenced to orering drinks and food and the server again reminded everyone around 7:45 PM of the time we had to leave. At this point I was becoming a little perturbed because we are responsible profressionals and we don't need to be constantly reminded of this. Then at 8:30 my party stepped outside of the cabana to take a group photo and when we returned my guests started to get ready to leave. The Male Manager, (whom we have been gracious enough to give cake to), stepped in front of the Cabane and looked at his watch at about 8:40. At around 8:43 PM all our guests had departed and my husband went to the bathroom and while in there he heard a female tell our server that he needed to let us know we needed to leave soon and he advised them that we knew and were already leaving. While I sat there on my walker waiting on my husband to return, a young lady came into the cabana and started cleaning as if I wasn't there and it was 8:51 PM at this point. I am apalled that we thought enought to celebrate our event at your establishment and we were treated in such a manner. Our money spent the same as the party that was coming in at 9:30, (which by the way is a co-worker of mine that I suggested he rent the cabana to celebrate his birthday). We live near McDonough quare and have frequented 1942 on several occasions even celebrating my husband's birthday there last month with 12 in attendance and we have told a number of people about the business. However the way in which we were treated on Saturday is unacceptable and a clear indication that we need to look for another establishment to support. Not to mention the food was salty. Where do I begin? On a typical weekday, my companion and I were craving a meal and a few drinks, so we decided to give this establishment a try. The hostess informed us that we could order drinks and dinner at the bar, and our food would be brought out to us, allowing us to bypass the wait list. Perfect, or so I thought. We stood in line at the bar for about 40 minutes--and no, I'm not exaggerating--only to be told we could only order drinks there. After finally placing our drink orders, we found seating. It took over an hour to receive our two drinks, and nearly an hour and a half for our food order to be taken, during which time I ordered another drink. While the food arrived fairly quickly after ordering, the quality left much to be desired. We ordered lemon pepper salmon, which was so oversalted that I started to do the Harlem Shake and needed a blood pressure cuff to make sure my pressure wasn't climbing Mt Everest. The burger was as dry as a man's throat after wandering in the desert for days.I won't even comment on the young ladies dancing atop chairs as if they were bull riding at a rodeo. The last drink I ordered arrived when we asked for the check, and it was absolutely horrible. If I didn't know better, I would have thought it was a science experiment gone wrong. It definitely didn't taste right, nor did the water. Informed the manager only to be told he would not remove the drink for our tab. I am not one to complain or leave negative reviews unless absolutely warranted, but this experience was truly disappointing. If I could give a -5 review, I would. But the good was decent so I'll rate this place a 1 star simply because the customer service effing SUCKS. We arrived with a party of 10 for a birthday party last evening on Wednesday 11/13. We were going to sit inside but there was the stench of dirty mop water as soon as we hit the door. In top of that, there was no music playing inside like it was outside. The temperature last night was every bit of 60 degrees and we noticed heaters that were not in use, so after we were seated we asked our waitress if they could bring 1 or 2 over to our table. The heaters had wheels on the bottom so they're obviously mobile. The waitress told us that the heaters could not be moved per the owner...??? We asked for the manager and she stated the same thing. She said the only accommodation she could make was moving us inside. But the table next to us that was reserved for associates of the owner (per the on site manager) had a heater pulled right up to it and was on full blast. The manager pointed out that there were heaters above us but they were pointed away from us. Aside from us being cold, we also had to yell out order down to the waitress because she didn't walk around the table to take them. I guess when 18% gratuity is added to every order you can treat the patrons however you please. the bartenders, waitresses and manager watched us shiver outside while the owner's guests sat next to us comfortably and listened to us complain about how cold it was until we collectively decided to move inside. It smelled like dirty mop water and there were both gnats and flies flying around our food. Our waitress was a little better but not much. Personally I was disgusted at the attitude of the staff and so was everyone else in my party. To add insult to injury, I drove past there tonight 11/14 and what do I see? The same outside area that we froze in was enclosed with the tarp walls and the 3 patrons looked real warm and cozy. Ain't that something. To the owner of this establishment: this is why black owned restaurants get a bad reputation. You do not value your customers that come spend their money at all, but you value and accommodate your people to a fault. You may own the business, but your customers are who keep you in business and you need to remember that the next time they make simple requests like heat on a cold patio. If your suggestion is that we eat inside then make it a more pleasant experience. Your grass wall isn't enough for ppl to not notice the odd smell, the flies, lack of music or the stank attitudes of your staff. Your waitress could have walked away with a couple of hundred dollars in tips on top of the ridiculous 18% that's included in the bill but y'all blew it. I should have known I would have a bad experience based on the other countless reviews about your poor customer service but we gave y'all a shot anyway. Never again. That was my first and last time at either location. Do better for your other customers because you lost 10 last night. read more
