Heard about the salt bread from the bakery and I had to stop by. I ordered the salt bread, curry bread, matcha bread, cream filled bread, and mini croissants. Salt bread was good but I had better from Seoul to DTLA. It's a good spot in OC and you don't have to travel far. The other pastries were good 4/5 . The star of show was the mini croissants for me! Service was good and quick! One confusing thing was where to start to order. Definitely a good spot for coffee and pastries, next time I'll have to grab a drink!
Nice Japanese bakery nearby! Everything tasted great for the most part. I think the sweet things were more appetizing than the savory items but it almost felt like you needed both to alternate bites. The drinks were unavailable so can't comment there and parking is right outside. I was surprised the line wasn't that long at all on a Saturday morning and even before we left there was no line at all. Worth a try if you're into Japanese baked goods.
In love with their salt breads!! At last, sma bakery with good salt breads and it's in the same vicinity for premium matcha! I'm in heaven! Staff were friendly and service was fast; however, it is a tight spot and located in The Camp so if you're not there early, it can get hectic. I say plan your day early so you will have plenty of parking and seats. Absolutely will return to try other assortments but will be returning for sure for those salt breads.
I was drawn into 1954 Egashira (Japanese bakery). I really excited to try the matcha cube bread, especially since it was $7 for a loaf with 6 slices. I thought it must be amazing!! Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing. The matcha flavor was very subtle--almost barely noticeable--and for the price, I didn't feel it was worth it. :((( Luckily, the sample of the butter toast croissant saved the day! It was so delicious--crispy, buttery, and flavorful. I ended up purchasing one bun to eat right away because I couldn't resist! The cashier was okay and was doing her job, so come for the bakery but not the service.
Super cute Japanese bakery in Costa Mesa. You could tell it's pretty popular but how many people were in there. I loved the details in the bakery, the little capybara plushies, history of the bakery, etc. overall very clean and put together well. The bread was very good as well.
O M G ...salt butter breads, cinnamon bun, and some other glorious pastry. This place is amazing. The salt bread is unlike any I've had in the area...drenched in butter but still crispy. I LOVE this place staff is friendly. Place is clean. Bathroom is outside in the larger venue.
This place is amazing, but you have to be early if you want to try most of their breads. We ordered the mini croissants, it is so good! This might be my favorite croissant. French toast, salt butter bread, cinnamon bun, chocolate stick, shokupan, iced latte and sea salt matcha. Everything taste good although it's more on the expensive side I still think it's worth it! Staffs are friendly, they are giving out samples for the mini croissant which made us buy 2 boxes! The place is nice as well, pretty aesthetic. There is an outdoor seating as well!

I had the cinnamon roll which was 3.5 stars for me because the individually baked roll had good flavor as did the cream cheesy frosting, I prefer the more classic rolls - stuck together. pulled apart, and fluffier. (In years past, my favorite was Cinnabon and surprisingly a vendor at the the OC Fair.) The almond filled roll had a tasty cream and nut filling, but was smaller and being a sweet tooth, would prefer it to be a sweeter dough. Also, it's teeny. I was tempted to try the large $10 apple turnover, but was hoping for something half that size and half the price. Make next time. There were some other breads and pastries etc. that looked interesting so maybe I'll get something more next time. Because of all the construction, I couldn't stay and see what kind of vibe. The customer service was decent but it was 10"15 AM middle of the week.
Very cute Japanese bakery at the camp. Cute and spacious seating inside and limited seating outside. Quite warm inside, not sure if there is A/C or if its to keep the bread warm, but it can definitely be uncomfortable to eat/sit inside. salt bread: 9.7/10. AMAZING. the perfect texture: crispy, soft, fluffy. Flaky salt on top to give it the right amount of saltiness. Would come back for just salt bread. french toast: 8.8/10. Delicious! crispy outside, super soft inside. very flavorful and a good amount of sweetness. I usually find french toast to be a bit bland and dense, but this one was so good! mentaiko baguette: 5.6/10. a little too much mayo for my preference and bread is hard/chewy.
Visited 1954 Egashira after lunch on a Sunday, so there was no line and they were sold out of shokupan. It was super hot inside, but somehow the staff managed to maintain a cheery attitude (I don't know how because the heat instantly made me grumpy). They were giving out samples of their mini croissants, a bite-sized crispy sugary treat. My favorite was their 1954 custard bun - I can see why this is one of their most popular items. I was going to only eat half, but it was so light and yummy that I devoured the whole thing. The chocolate stick was kind of a like a less sweet mini chocolate babka. The salt and butter bread was very salty, with large chunks of salt on top, kind of reminiscent of a salty Hawaiian roll. The custard chocolate, which resembled a pain Suisse, had no custard, just chocolate. I would not make a special trip, especially given how challenging parking can be at The Camp, but would definitely stop in if I was going to eat lunch there.
Super cute store with quality items! Upon walking in, I was offered a mini croissant sample and it was amazing! I originally came to try the salt bread but the mini croissants ended up being my absolute fave!! Can't wait to come back again!
Just tried the 1954 shokupan that ALWAYS sells out before I get there and it is so fluffy and yummy, even when toasted. And it's only $5! Service and quality has still been amazing and I've been going consistently for weeks now! LOVE this place!
The cute Japanese pastry shop was very clean with cute decor. The service was good. You wait for their server to pick up the pastry for you so there is no cross contamination. The line moved quickly. Their popular mini croissant are coated with lightly sweetener syrup. Good with coffee or matcha. The price for their pastry isn't expensive at all. Its about $3 and up. I dont eat pastry much but I will try out their other delicious looking bread next time. Its a 4.7 out of 5.

That salt and butter on first bite is delicious! Everything else I tried afterwards has the same lightness and texture as well. Both the sweet and savory breads are perfectly balanced in flavor without being overpowering. The pastries are about the right size to have a few before taking any leftovers to go. The bakery is beautifully decorated and will definitely remind you that you're at 1954. It does have its charm. I enjoyed the atmosphere, and every bread tried was excellent. read more

The bread here is SOOO delicious! Located in the camp so parking can be a nightmare. We came on a weekday around noon and it was pretty full so we had to circle around to find a spot. we ordered the butter salt bread which was SOO soft and fluffy with the perfect blend of savory and sweet. They also gave out samples of mini croissants which was nice and crispy and delicious as well so we ordered that too! Come early because even on a Tuesday around 1:30pm, many of their breads were sold out. read more
I stumbled upon 1954 Egashira while at The Camp thinking it was still the Black Market Bakery. I didn't know they ended up closing and had the chance to be at their soft opening with the owners who were really nice, as well as the staff! I didn't quite catch his name, but one of the cashiers was super positive and gave my girlfriend and I recommendations, so we ended up trying the banana cream matcha as well as a few breads I forgot to capture. First and foremost, I have to say their banana pudding matcha has probably been my favorite variation of this matcha to date. I felt like the banana cream was perfectly sweet, not too much, or not too ripe of a cream, and it complimented the matcha beautifully. As for the breads, we got 2 peperoncino's as well as a salt and butter. I really liked the peperoncino as it was a light snack to have but still filling, as it was basically like a mini sandwich. The salt and butter was okay, I'm not too into it, but it was still good to try! I'd definitely come back whenever I'm at the Camp for a matcha and a peoeroncino! I'd seen a lot about this place on Instagram and the lines made me curious. I'm also a sucker for good Japanese bread. Shokupan: 7/10. Super duper soft. Just not much flavor. It's $5 for half a loaf of shokupan and I think it's a decent amount of bread. I tried some of the buns and pastries but don't remember what they were. I just remember some of them were kind of dry. One thing was surprisingly moist though I don't remember which one. Overall, I think Brio Brio is way better but I respect what the owner was trying to do here. The staff members here are nice. One of them raved about the marble bread which I woud have gotten if I liked chocolate. My friends said it was good read more
This Japanese bakery is currently in its soft opening, and they were offering free samples of their melon pan. It was actually my first time trying melon pan, and overall, I really enjoyed it. The bread itself was good, though I would have preferred it to be a bit more moist. The creamy filling and crisp, crusty topping were the highlights for me. The cream wasn't overly sweet and even had a slight crunch to it, which added a nice contrast to the soft bread. The loaf bread was delicious--one of the best milk breads. Unfortunately, the service was subpar. I had to repeat my request multiple times for the salt and butter bread, and I still ended up paying for and taking home the wrong bread. :( read more
I came here on a Saturday morning and there was a line. I have seen this bakery on yelp and i was curious. So I stood in line when it was my turn I could not figure out when i wanted so I got a bunch of things. And my bunch of things were delicious. I would certainly come back here when its not as busy and get some treats what I can say is there bread is not too sweet. It's fluffy and yummy. read more
I've been seeing this bakery all over Instagram for months, and since I finally had to run some errands in the area, I decided to pop in. I expected a massive line, but it was surprisingly quiet. My immediate thought was, "Uh oh, did Instagram trick me again?"--especially since that's happened to me a few times before.When I walked in, they handed me a bite-sized croissant to sample. It looked cute, so I popped it right into my mouth. Maybe it was just too small to get the proper flavor, but instead of that airy, flaky crunch you want from a croissant, it felt dense, like a thick piece of pastry that had been squished together. Plus, the sugar coating on top was way too sweet. After that sample, I honestly debated just walking right out because I was so disappointed.But since I was already inside, I figured I should pick at least one thing, so I grabbed a curry bread. I will say, the prices overall were very reasonable--especially with inflation these days, the price point for their pastries is excellent.I took the curry bread back to my car, expecting absolutely nothing, and took a bite. Wow... it was actually so good! I started laughing because that free sample almost ruined it for me, yet the actual bread I bought was phenomenal. I immediately regretted not buying more varieties to try! The inside had a big piece of sausage nestled in a rich curry filling, and the pastry dough surrounding it was thin, beautifully chewy, and incredibly soft.This bakery completely won me back with just that one curry bread--even if there wasn't a line and the sample was a flop! If you haven't been yet, you should definitely check it out. They have a lot of unique pastries you won't find at standard bakeries, so it'll be fun to go back and try them all one by one. read more
Of all the shio pan (salt bread) i have had (in OC), Egashira has had the best. Because theirs are baked in small batches, this ensures fresh pastries every time! Appreciated the quick service and there is plenty of seating throughout the cafe. The vibes are so cute and aesthetically pleasing definitely will be a regular here!! read more

Tasty and worth a try! Fair warning they are still in their early phase and as a result their restock time can be longer than expected. My first visit practically 2/3rd of their goods were sold out and it wasn't being replenished quickly. My second visit I was second in line for the day so they were well stocked. Everything I tried was delicious and really reasonably priced! The panini was hands down my favorite item I tried, closely followed by the walnut bread. All the other items I tried were also good but not items I would make my way back for. I don't recommend their matcha, I wasn't a fan of the flavor but 10/10 recommend on the pastries! read more

Interestingly, the sign at the flagship store simply reads '1954', leading many visitors to wonder about the bakery's exact name. On Google Maps, the flagship store is listed as 'Stone oven bakery Kusukusu' 石窯パン工房 くすくす (Ishigama Pan Kōbō Kusukusu). Among more than 100 varieties of pastries, popular choices include mini croissants, melon bread, curry bread, and salt bread. This first U.S. location, newly opened at The CAMP opens at 9:00 AM, but a long line forms even before the doors open. I arrived around 9:05 AM, and due to the long line, it took over 30 minutes just to make my purchase. I bought Shokupan (Japanese milk bread loaf), a salt & butter roll, Matcha cube, and an iced Americano; everything was reasonably priced and delicious. The Shokupan was particularly popular and sold out quickly. On my next visit, I plan to try other popular pastries, such as the 1954 Custard cream bun and Mentai France. read more

This Japanese bakery is located in The CAMP in Costa Mesa and it's the first U.S. location straight from Japan! They had a wide variety of pastries--both savory and sweet. I ordered two items: Salt and Butter Roll (4/10): was disappointment with this one, maybe I got a bad batch? I was expecting a soft, fluffy interior with a slightly crunchy bottom--like how regular salt and butter rolls usually are. However, the piece I got had a dense, doughy interior and did not deliver on the crispy base. Also, the size was very small considering the $3 price point Mini Croissants (10/10): Got the box for $10 are am so glad I did! These are literally little bits of delight. Flaky outside, slightly chewy inside and the sugar glaze on the outside was perfect. Would pair well with coffee or tea. Perfect for sharing, or enjoying all by yourself :) I was surprised how modern the interior design looked. Great place for coffee and chatting with friends! Though, there seems to be a lack of seating besides a few towards the front. So keep that in mind. Service and staff are friendly. Parking is a little hectic. Not a lot of spots and fills up really quickly. Recommend going either early or during the weekdays. read more

Such a wonderful little bakery! Everything tastes fresh, homemade, and authentic, not overly sweet or artificial. The taiyaki was especially delicious--golden and lightly crisp on the outside, soft and fluffy inside, with a generous filling. You can really taste the care and quality that goes into their baking. read more
I came to check out the hype I saw on social media. The baked goods in the middle were all gone by 1pm when I got here! Their iced matcha latte was decent, but I finished it fast because they put lots of ice. The salted bread is delicious; beware there is a separate line for it. Otherwise, you can still get it in the main line. I loved the apple pie pastry! Good luck with parking at The Camp nowadays. Friendly staff, spacious and cute interior. read more

I went to a yelp event and this place was opened. I haven't been to the camp in a while and this was a nice surprise. I love bread. I have tried different bakeries and tried the salt and butter. When I was in line we were offered mini croissants and I'm a fan. It was sweet and super delicious. I went with the salt and butter but will definitely come back to try their other pastries and their drinks. They have sitting inside and some outside. Parking can be crazy sometimes but on a Friday morning I was able to find parking quickly. read more

Great open air space, but terrible location at the camp. There are limited parking spots, and the camp is just congested, at all hours and days. I had high hopes for this place, because of the strong social media hype. However the products themselves were just okay. Nothing mind blowing or can't live without products. This is definitely a cute experience and great vibe, as well as very thought out. I tried a different variety of products, and a drink. The prices were great and not too expensive, which was nice! The staff was nice, but didn't recommend anything or have suggestions. read more
This bakery just opened up and it is already probably in the top three bakeries in Orange County. They do fresh bread all in small batches. I've got to try the salt bread, a little crispy bread with bacon and green onions. We also saw the matcha bun come out. They had a butter cream bread that was delicious and every single one was soft, buttery, full of flavor. It didn't feel too heavy as well. They have these mini croissants that are definitely worth getting. It's currently in soft opening but I know it'll be super busy in the next few weeks so you better come enjoy it now before you have to wait in these long lines read more
The bread was decent, but nothing amazing. The staff was nice and the restaurant looked cool, but the selection was really limited. We thought the bread with the sweet butter (butter sandwich) was ok, but we didn't think the matcha stick or chocolate chip stick were that great. I also could have passed on the salt and butter bread. Hopefully they come up with some more options that we like more. read more
Friendly and decent but the pastries (salt and butter, sunrise, custard) don't rival Out of Ordi or Salted Butter. Less lines and less cost (about half) though. But the mini croissants are quite addicting. Bite size yums. read more
First time here and I passed here many times. Today I decided to stop but this parking lot is packed. For this size -too many food and cafe spots here. So I had to go around few times before I found a spot. It's great bakery I order 2 matchas , $10 box mini croissants, $4.25 each 2 panini $2.95 each 2 butter/salt bread. All employees that helped me were nice and served with a smile!! Love it !! Now to leave parking spot I was boxed in . So it took a few minutes and delivery guy helped me get out. Next time I go earlier. I was shopping when I decide to find a matcha cafe last minute. I'll be back definitel. Oh I ate my panini and salt butter bread on my way home! read more
It's still soft opening but the line was very very long and the pastries were only ok. The salt bread was heavily salted and the other pastries were nothing extraordinary but it's a decent price. The matcha was good so there's a plus! Though I would say nothing here was worth over a 10 minute wait! The employees were nice and it was bustling I will come back for plain loaves of bread which I see they sell out of quickly. read more
I am writing this review as I am slipping into a food coma after just having left the bakery. I have passed by this place a few days times before they opened. With the long Memorial Day weekend, I took this as an opportunity to stop by the bakery and get some bread. The ambiance was very cozy. You can ready about its history and see the first factory as well as faces of the founders. There were a lot of tables and seating areas. I showed up right before 12pm to see all the Shokupan loaves sold out. There were signs reading that they sold out since 10:30am. I proceeded to the pastry and bread in the display case and got the butter sandwich and 1954 sunrise with cream. All the salt and butter breads were sold out, but the female employee helping me out said they make them in small batches and the next batch should be ready in 5 minutes. I decided to pay for my pastries and matcha sea salt drink and get back in line later when the next batch comes out. I kept missing the salt and butter bread refills. It took me until the third batch to finally get three salt and butter bread because they fly off the shelf so fast. I am so glad there is a limit of 3 bread per party. Because I was already in line, I saw they restocked on paninis. I got two of them. I may have spent over $32 on breads, pastries, and matcha drink. I may have also devoured more than half of my breads and pastries before leaving the bakery. I woke up the next day and couldn't stop thinking about the salt and butter bread and the paninis. I was also curious about those Shokupan loaves that sold out so fast before I could even see how they look like. I drove back to The Camp and this time showed up before opening hours. They were supposed to open at 9:30am, but ended up opening at 10:00am. There was a long line forming from the door to the valet parking area. I understand they're in their soft opening stage so I try to give them grace. They did offer complimentary coffee and lattes to all people in line. I got the lavender latte with oat milk. It was tasty and this is coming from someone who rarely touches coffee. When they opened, I was able to secure a loaf of the Shokupan and three salt and butter breads. I did not see the paninis ready this time so I just paid for my items and proceeded to line up again and buy three paninis when they were ready. Once again, I may have eaten all the salt and butter breads and paninis before they could make it to my car. Do not carb shame me. They were addicting I had to come twice (two days in a row). read more
I visited this bakery during soft opening. I purchased the custard bun and mentai baguette. The custard bun had the perfect squishy texture. The custard cream filling was silky and tasted like vanilla essence. A custard bun from a Chinese bakery has more custard and vanilla flavor. The mentai baguette is new to me. I really enjoyed the savory flavor and crispy butter texture. I will be returning to the bakery to try more items and their shokupan. In addition, their matcha latte prices seem cheaper than other places. The cashier was really attentive and efficient grabbing the items I ordered. They also have displays holding their packaged items. read more

Got to try the hype and it delivered. Got a few items and thoroughly enjoyed them all. The salt bread was very fresh and crunchy, but a little salty. Still great though. My favorite was the mentaiko bread. Have to eat that fresh! Definitely a great try. read more
I got the mentaiko and it was so good I'm still thinking about it. It was savory and creamy without being overindulgent. With being topped on top of a baguette, it was a bit crunchy and could be a bit messy to eat but still liked it. read more

I had no idea this bakery was located at The Camp! We were there for The Taco Stand, and while walking around, I stumbled upon it. I was so happy to find it. The bakery has both indoor and outdoor seating and is very spacious. The first display of tables I saw looked like it normally holds pastries, but everything was sold out. I wish I knew what they had because it must have been popular! I asked the staff which pastries were their most popular and ended up buying all of their recommendations. I also tried the Banana Matcha, which was really good and not overly sweet. I've been on a mission to find the best banana matcha in Orange County, and this one is definitely up there. What I purchased: * 4 Salt Rolls * 2 Custard Cream * 2 Custard Chocolate * 1 Almond Fromage * 1 Sunrise My thoughts: * Salt Roll: Good, but not my favorite. * Custard Cream: A little too sweet for my taste. * Custard Chocolate: Perfect! Rich, balanced, and very tasty. The staff was friendly, helpful, and patient while I decided what to order. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely stop by again if I'm in the area. read more
SOFTEST breads ever! Love their shokupan, it is extremely soft, there are no place like this in orange county. Must try their melon bun! The staffs are nice and always helpful, they serve with speed as well. Always sells out quick so you have to go early (opens at 9am). This spot replaced the black market bakery and the inside is cozy with wall seats. Plenty of space inside. read more

new japanese cafe at the park/anti mall. i ordered the ice americano and the sunrise bread. my friends got the tea latte and matchas. i think their drinks were below average, so would not recommend. the bread was alright though, so i might go back to try more pastries. read more

Cute new Japanese bakery that just opened with unique breads! The matcha stick was my favorite but they had some of the best salt bread I've had. I love that everything was still warm. I came on a weekday afternoon and it was relatively empty but the bread was already low, so be sure to come early. read more
