I hate leaving negative reviews, but after a few consistently poor experiences I think it's time. This used to be our go to sushi place, but in the last year or so it's really gone downhill and the price has gone up. This visit, we made a reservation for our group of 10 to celebrate two birthdays. They acted completely surprised when we walked in, and we waited about 15-20 minutes to be seated. Annoying, but not the end of the world. Once we were seated, it took another chunk of time and we had to flag someone down for our AYCE slips to be picked up. Again, not a huge deal but added to the reservation thing, the annoyance builds. The real downer though, is that the quality of fish has just slipped. The last three times the scallop sushi has been really off, and this time the tuna was as well. Like, sprouts sushi tasted fresher. My husband got sick after eating the mussels too with food poisoning-like symptoms. Our whole party also felt they're too liberal with the sauces that go on the rolls -- every roll has sriracha or like an eel sauce drenching it. What are we trying to hide? This place used to be packed in the evenings, but based on the amount of people I saw during peak hours this visit, we may not be the only ones having this experience. The entire experience was average. First thing I noticed. No Asians eating? Place was a little busy. Second thing I noticed. Where's the Asian chefs? Miso soup wasn't good. Like somebody made it but didn't taste it. Very bland. Sushi tasted fresh. Rice tasted like it was under cooked. I don't know any other way to put it but it wasn't good. It's just rice. Mixed seafood roll with vegan roll on the same plate? My family has food allergies. Should've been separated. I wasn't the worst I've ever had, but not the best. Overall very average. The inside looked nice but the menus were dirty and pages stuck together. This was a one time stop for us. Will go to our normal spot again. I don't get how you can mess up rice and miso soup at a sushi restaurant. It's basic. Start fixing that first. read more

Now, I am not a sushi eater. This was my first time trying sushi so I can't speak much to it but my whole family thought it was good!! First off, this place was BUSY. We went on a Friday night and had to wait an hour plus for a table. I also had to park across the street because there were no open spots!! We had drinks and waited in their banquet room for our table. Once seated, we were brought waters very quickly! The waiter was super nice and tentative despite how busy it was. Appetizers came out fairly quickly and sushi followed quick behind that. My chicken dish took a little longer but it was tasty! And a generous serving. I didn't even finish it all! I tried two rolls and my favorite out of the two was the summergasm. It was YUMMY! It was on the sweeter side and had a piece of apple in it but I loved it!! The Almost Man Child always chooses sushi for his bday dinner, so we naturally had to find sushi, even out of town. Thanks to COVID rules and regulations, we waited outside in our car for about 30 minutes for a table. This was our first time there, so I feel like our waitress could have explained how things worked. We figured it out tho. You just write down how many of what you want and they come grab your order form. Pretty simple - EXCEPT we didn't know the difference between a long roll and a hand roll. We figured it out, tho. Granted, we could have asked, but it kind of felt like our waitress couldn't be bothered with the questions. She wasn't rude or anything, just maybe like we should know how to do this already? I'm going to chalk up my experience to the fact that we got there around 7:30, and weren't seated until about 7:45pm, so it was towards the end of the evening since they close at 9pm. We were still getting rolls that we ordered up to about 8:45pm, at that point there was the last call. Since the rolls came out in an uneven pattern, not everyone was able to eat at the same time. The rice seemed like it had been sitting out for awhile, and the seaweed was ultra chewy. The fish was okay, and on the fresh cuts, it was a thick and generous portion. The rolls didn't pop for me, though. It seemed like the majority of menu items automatically came with a spicy heat element to it. If it wasn't desired, you pretty much have to special order/request for the spicy items to be left off. It felt more like California fusion of sushi. It wasn't bad, but I doubt that if I was in the area again that I'd revisit. read more

The first time I tried Tha Joint in Sparks I had a bad experience so when a friend suggested this spot I was reluctant. I put aside my hesitation and it paid off. The service my friends and I had was amazing. The food was delicious and brought out at a steady rate so that there wasn't much in the way of downtime between orders. The only suggestion I'd make is for the servers to introduce the rolls a little slower when reading them off. The woman we had yesterday read things so fast the first couple of times that our table had to ask her to repeat herself a few times. We're not slow. We were just curious as to what was presented. Outside of that, I will definitely go back for more food. Next time, I'll take a seat at the bar in lieu of sitting at a table. Not sure what is going on in Reno with the Sushi scene. I have gone to three different places now and have been extremely disappointed with the quality and cut of sushi. I came here with a friend that recommended this. I had the mussels that were very good and tender. The appetizers were excellent. I mostly eat nigiri and ordered quite a few different types. I asked for some ponzu sauce for the hamachi, but it tasted like water. The nigiri all tasted the same, except for the salmon. The rolls were good, but I eat them like dessert, because they usually have some unagi or sweet soy on them. The sushi was ok. The service was lacking and really not that friendly. I'm going to give one more place another try and if that doesn't cut it, I am just going to stick to ordering poke bowls. read more

I brought a friend from San Francisco here yesterday and I was shocked how bad the sushi was. It was very embarrassing and I felt so bad because he drove all the way here. The roles are honestly really bad. They put way too many fish in there and each fish is razor thin and then they put this pretty gross sauce on it. There's too much stuff in each roll with bad sauce and they just really don't really taste like anything it's just like vaguely fishy.. several of the fish tasted too fishy, especially the scallop, and honestly, that is very rare and Reno usually we have really fresh fish in the city because of the casinos. Furthermore, today is the following day after that meal, and I have had the grossest upset, stomach and bad digestion , it's extremely uncomfortable and very embarrassing. I had to excuse myself to the bathroom like 20 times today hanging out with these other people. I'm pretty bummed that I wasted my night out with my friend here and that I probably ate some bad fish . I don't want fully food poisoning, but it really really messed up my digestion in an embarrassing way that I don't want to describe in more detail. The only halfway decent things were the Nigri , but one of them was horrendously bad, the seared ahi. It was completely dried out and disgusting, the seared bits were actually hard - as if it had been sitting in there display case for like a week. And again the scallops were totally fishy. I am not surprised that I got an upset stomach from this place. I have no idea it has such good reviews!! Skippy, fish, taste fishy fish, and upset stomach. I still had a good night because my friend is awesome, but I had to apologize over and over again for how bad it was . bummer. read more

For how many people were there on a Saturday night I was surprised it wasn't louder! Seating is always good they have a large area with a large bar and plenty of tables. I rarely have to wait when I come here which is nice. The menu is great with a wide variety and honestly I have never disliked anything they have made! All you can eat is such a good deal when you know you can eat your weight in sushi. Beer selection is good for a sushi bar and of course they have sake. I settled for an 805. Nice and cold! I have been to almost every sushi restaurant in Reno and I find myself coming back to this one. This is the second one. The original is located in Spanish springs. They are both jail themed which is quite an interesting concept. It makes the ambience quite unique and dare I say a little spooky due to the black decor and walls but it is different in a good way. Now if you're not a sushi fan, don't worry because they have an a la carte menu with various Asian dishes to choose from which include main courses, appetizers, and desserts! The reason why this is one of my favorite sushi joints is because of their food. The sushi is consistently delicious. Their nigiri is always fresh and the rice to fish portion is perfectly balanced. Same goes for their long/hand rolls. My favorites are the epic high, hitman, and tha joint. The menu has a lot of variety including raw, cooked, half cooked half raw, and even vegetarian rolls! But wait, there's more. The appetizers are also amazing. If you go to sushi and don't get yakiton, you're missing out. I also love the calamari rings. And of course who doesn't love to end their meal with dessert? They have a variety of desserts from both mochi and ice cream. My go to is green tea or tempura banana ice cream. The service is okay but it could be better. The servers are always friendly but not the most attentive. They tend to disappear until it's time to give the bill. The lunch and dinner menu are exactly the same so if you're expecting more options for dinner you won't find any even though the dinner price is more. Unlike other sushi restaurants in Reno, lunch ends at 4pm whiles others end at 3pm. Lunch is $18.95 and dinner is $24.95. They also have a 10% off for students and military Monday-Thursday. What can I say about this place. Excellent AYCE selection. I couldn't even make up my mind about which I wanted to eat. The sushi tasted amazing and being from Hawai'i we love our sushi. We took our entire baseball team to their establishment and they were so accommodating, kind, and didn't freak out or treat us poorly because we were rolling 25 deep with kids and adults. We recommend this spot to anyone who wants amazing service and sushi quality. read more

Had a challenge choosing from all the sushi places in Reno. This one was close to the hotel with good reviews. I came in after lunch hour and was immediately seated at the bar. All the employees were super attentive and I had everything that I ordered within a few minutes. I liked that the rolls were a little on the thinner side without too much rice. Nigiri was good. My first impression was go back again. My second impression was NOT! My first visit the chef was generous and didn't pack on the rice, my second visit was the opposite, way too much rice! How or why would I do that or even give 20% if am being stuffed with rice? Unfortunately there are many who are skimpy wither tips so the chefs Pack Dat Rice On! Well, you misjudged me and made me keep looking for a better sushi joint and I found one TO MY LIKING! The options this place has are good, if you are not a novice sushi eater and have been to 40 different AYCE Sushi joints, then this one probably suits you fine....just not me. They are really attentive when you sit at the bar which I like doing. This place gives me the impression that it's Hispanic Owned which in no way affects their food. This is my favorite place . Unfortunately, my last experience with service was so bad . I took some friends of mine here on December 31st around 12. We sat down . Put in our order . Well it took a very long time to get our food . They don't bring half of what we ordered . They also got one of the rolls wrong . When I finally flagged down our server after a very long time , we explained how we believe we got the wrong roll and didn't receive other orders . She said well there is nothing up there and cooks said they don't have an order .she made us put in another order. We waiting long period of time once again and I had to flag a different server down . The cooks gave her a hard time and made a game out of it while we sat waiting for a second time for our food . We finally got what we ordered but never got the correct roll we wanted . Very disappointed. They were not that busy ether . It's a shame because I really do enjoy the shush here . Do you ever have those days when the food looks/smells/tastes so good you're on your last bite before you remember to take a photo? That was my experience at 2 Tha Joint. I dined in with a group of 3 for all you can eat around lunch time. We made a reservation ahead of time that was quick and easy. When arriving, the host offered us an open room with no other guests. Definitely a distanced option that made the experience that much better. All you can eat sushi is rather easy to find in Reno but 2 Tha Joint has always been top tier. Each bite tastes fresh and distinct from the last. I wish I could remember the roll shown in the photo but let's just say whatever it was went down very quick! Friday night at 2 Tha Joint with my daughter and friends, and the place was hoppin'. Despite being busy, the table service was friendly and the hot sake hot ($6, large). Food orders hit the table remarkably fast, and we were never lacking for attention. In a town with so many all-you-can-eat sushi options ($18.95 lunch, $24.95 dinner), exceptional service really stands out. We ordered nearly all the available appetizers, including yakiton, gyoza, miso soup, baked mussels, fried calamari, and Angry Bird. The fried wonton wrappers of cream cheese with hint of seafood were adequate, the potstickers crispy, the soup hot and full of tofu/scallion, albeit a bit watery. The mussels were on the diminutive side--though tasty and spicy--and the squid wasn't overcooked. Angry Bird was tempura deep-fried chicken nuggets doused in hot sauce, which we completely enjoyed. For nigiri I went with maguro (tuna), tataki (marinated seared tuna), hamachi (yellowtail), cooked scallop, salmon, cajun salmon, smoked salmon, tai (red snapper), unagi (cooked freshwater eel), mackerel, tako (octopus), and upside down shrimp. The cuts were very nice with a perfect amount of rice, and all tasted fresh. The tataki was very good, the tako tender, and the mackerel was exceptional. The octopus and mackerel were so good, I had to have more of each. The scallop slices were on the large side, perfectly seared, buttery and beautiful. Like their sister location "Tha Joint" in Sparks, the menu has a prison theme. Make of that what you will. My friends ordered a collection of long rolls, starting with Tha Death Row's mix of spicy tuna, onion, spicy crab, asparagus, cajun salmon, avocado, habanero masago (omelet), and chili sauce. I noted a lot of spicy elements in much of the menu, so perhaps that's the punishment aspect? This roll had a lot going on, with something of a beefy flavor. My daughter called it, "Sunday dinner ala sushi". Tha Whole Nine Yards combined fried calamari, spicy crab, shrimp, avocado, cream cheese, pepper powder, and "joint mix", whatever that is. It was crunchy, smooth, and spicy. A Spider roll of soft shell crab, cucumber, and avocado was pretty standard, with less presentation of big pokey bits than some, but long on crab flavor and texture. Tha Only's use of unagi, asparagus, crab, spicy tuna, and fried sweet potato was interesting, coming in second on sweetness to Tha Misfits' tempura shrimp, mango, seared salmon, spicy crab, and lemon sauce combo. I'm not going to say much more about "Tha Jail Bait" and its tempura crab, tempura scallion, seared tuna, avocado, garlic pepper sauce, and tempura crunch, other than it was a pretty tempting morsel. Oddly for me, Tha Wing Man's inclusion of cream cheese with salmon, cucumber, fried jalapeno, lemon sauce, and hot sauce worked. I'm not generally a fan of cream cheese in rolls, but the other items covered for it and kept it from being a nuisance. Crystal shrimp, cucumber, sliced lemon, salmon, scallion, and hot sauce completed Tha Frisco. I thought the ingredients were a bit overcome by the heat, though the friend who ordered it said it was her favorite. My last minute order of a Tha Joint hand roll turned out to be one of my favorites for the evening, loaded with crystal shrimp, spicy crab, cooked scallop, avocado, pepper powder, and hot sauce. Here the heat made sense, and the nori was easy to bite through. We ended the meal with more drinks and a taste of green tea ice cream, because it just wouldn't be a Reno sushi night out otherwise. If you've gotta do some time, 2 Tha Joint is a pretty pleasant place to spend it. read more

Ahhhh. It's so romantic. Two lovers, just getting to know each other. The honeymoon phase of a relationship is almost always the best. You want to see them even if they are across town. And that's what we have here. A great budding romance of the Sushi kind. Have you eaten at tha Joint? Then you will know what to expect. I hadn't been to tha Joint in Sparks in awhile because there are just so many good places to choose from between there and my home. But now..I have one a bit closer, and also nearer to where I find myself more often. The layout of the place is nice. Lots of bar space and enough bar seating. (if you ever were in Hamdogs (RIP), the layout hasn't been messed with much. But the quality of service even on the "first minute officially open" holds no ghosts from tenants past. The owners know what they are doing. Putting out great quality sushi and good prices is something they always strive to do. And being the first through the door and the first customers today the Owner treated us to a couple of their higher level desserts! Really cool of him to do that. I liked the Banana Mousse a lot. The green tea creme brulee is full of flavor and uniquely presented. Both are totally worth getting. And some day I am gonna go in for a meal that isn't AYCE sushi. They have some great dinner combos that look awesome. $25 for an app, a main and a dessert! Add some of that unfiltered Sake I had today and we are good 2 go. Anyway. The 13 Of us Went to Tha Joint for AYCE sushi. The waitress let us get individual checks which was really nice. Dinner was about $26. I ordered a bunch of appetizers, nigiris, quail egg shooter and a salmon skin hand roll. The mussels were small and came three to an order. We went to town on them. The angry chicken had a little spicy sauce over fried boneless chicken. I didn't care for the ceviche that came with 3 tortilla chips - there was a lot of bell peppers with cooked salmon/shrimp. The yakiton was nothing to write home about - it was a rolled small toritilla stuffed with cream cheese. The nigiris were like small size nigiris with rice. You can over order and still finish it. I loved the scallop, makerel, hamachi, unagi, salmon, flying fish eggs with quail egg , seared tuna nigiris. They could have been fresher but was good for an AYCE. I loved my salmon skin hand roll. Lots of crispy salmon skin with small portion of rice. The quail egg shooter had too much fluid in it. I would have liked more flying fish eggs in it. The service here was excellent. Everything we ordered we got. It's too bad there is only one helping of dessert Per person for an AYCE which I don't understand since I would have liked multiple flavors of Mochi ice cream - mango, strawberry etc. read more

OK, this was my first visit to Tha Joint... heard lots of good things about it and it's practically around the corner from my sister's house. So we thought we'd give it a try, and are gad we did. Love the stark black & white decor... something about this combo that's simply timeless, and modern looking at the same time. Service was great. We were seating right away and the waitress was there immediately. All you can eat at tables as well as the sushi bar. Few things that didn't scream sushi to me... Angry Bird Spicy Chicken... and appetizer offered that was excellent.. but spicy as it says. Also tried their Gyoza... which were a bit more like dumplings (too big for Gyoza, and fried). They were OK, but they were dumplings. Their sushi fish was fresh and plated nicely... not just rolls on a plate, but presented differently. Looked great, tasted great. I've become a big fan of The Rim at the Grand Sierra, but this place will definitely see me again. Love to try some of he dinner combos offered. read more
