There's a reason I don't review many bars. I don't drink a whole lot and I get quite drunk easily, making me a cheap date. The 3636 is only stumbling distance from my front door, which is kind of cool because if I ever want to go on a drinking binge like I did last weekend this would be an ideal location for it. The drinks are cheap, a friend bought our first round of drink for 5, or was it 6 people? I can't remember.... for less than $30. The bathroom was decent, from what I can remember..... Do you see the pattern in this review? The last thing I clearly remember was arriving at the tiny bar, there were lots of Long Beach locals hanging around the bar, some were playing pool and there were even the obligatory scantily clad barflies. The music was playing, there was a casual comfortable vibe that you can only find in the LBC and then someone asked me what I wanted to drink. I didn't know, so I said "I'll have what Joey's having!" I was brought a tall blue drink called an "Adios" all you true alkies know the full name of this drink, don't you? 4 hours later I was calling in "sick" to work the next day. read more

I have to give the 3636 five stars... Why you might ask? (especially if you've been inside?) I met my husband here. HA HA!! I was doing laundry on a hot summer Sunday next door and would saunter over to the 36 for a blood mary while my duds got suds. Much to my amazement I met the man I would one day marry. I still giggle over this. When we get the standard question, "so how did you two meet?" I love telling them the story "doin' laundry" (which equates to drinking-while-washing, much more fun). Besides finding your life mate, this bar is, well, kinda like Holly T said, a bit run down. But if you like that Barfly feel in your pubs, this is it baby! UPDATE 12/30/2006:: We spent our 1 year wedding anniversary (or at least the beginning of it) at the 3636, and we actually met another couple, celebrating their anniversary, who met at the 3636. Since it's not within super-convenient walking distance, I've only been to the 3636 a few times--always on the way to or from somewhere, so I only stay for a couple of drinks, but I've always had a good time here. It's a no-frills local dive that serves 'em cheap and strong. They have pool tables and a juke box but all the "action" is at the bar, where people just park it and shoot the shit with other people like they should. A chill local joint--worth a stop. Such a great dive it should be in a Speedo. My wife and I went for our second time in two weeks, having moved a few blocks away. Never been here before though I've lived in LBC for 12 yrs. That's kind of like being in LBC for 12 yrs and not ever seeing a bulldog in a wagon. My opinion: 1. Servers. We met Pearl and Jason and they're both cool- good people. And if you're way into music, I recommend conversing with Jason if it's not a busy night. (Update: He's gone- but not "dead" gone). 2. Jukebox. Lame! $2 buys you 2 songs, or 1 if you're drunk and you press the wrong buttons. And the songs are limited. I hate TouchTunes. We need to get a petition going. 3. Pool Table. 2 tables. 75 cents. Not bad. That's 5 cents a ball. 4. Drinks. Stiff. People complain about Cash Only, but typically cash only places have stiffer drinks. I don't need to explain why or how. Oh I do? Well I don't wanna. 5. The people. We've only been there twice but the people I've met are friendly. I mean, they haven't yelled NORM when I entered, but that's not my name and I'd probably be insulted if they did. (One exception: the guy with neck tattoos that pouts if you beat him in pool). 6. Prices. Not horrible. 7. Size. I always thought it was double the size, but it's small. Not as tiny as Crow's, but it'd be hard to do the whole Thriller dance in there if it broke out. Came here with some friends on a Wednesday night, it started off nice as we wanted a laid back bar to settle down at for the night. However, the bartender and the type of people there like to talk behind your back out of nowhere. One instance included me telling my friend who usually pays with card that they're cash only and that we could use the atm and someone from across the bar said something along the lines of "oooh they're cash only oh nooo" and the bartender cracked a smile with them. Am I not allowed to inform my friends so you don't have to repeat the cash only stuff to them?? I was making small talk with the bartender when we walked in and got the impressions that he was a cool guy, I was already preparing my tip for him but all of that went out the window when I bought another beer and the interactions played out as such after he gave me my change: Bartender: Oh thank you. / Me: Oh yea thanks man! / bartender then waited for me to turn my back to him and says "I was being sarcastic." After that I realized that the guy was saying that because I didn't tip him but I was planning on giving him a nice tip before we left! If you want a tip that bad then you can't act like that, your loss man. So my friends and I left early without tipping because of the bartender's and patron's (supported) crappy behavior. Bartender with a blonde ugly man bun and a flannel that he probably wears 4 times a week btw. So many other bars in the area that treat their customers much better and earn their tip rather than allowing people to loudly talk crap about other customers and laugh with them and STILL expect a tip after. First and last time there, can't help but consider the thought that I would've been treated better if I was caucasian like everyone else in there and all the guys the bartender was laughing with, but that's just me. After reading some reviews too, definitely seems like the place hires the bartenders that no other places want. Definitely come here if you're the type of person to be in your mid 40's and still think/talk/act ignorantly like you haven't grown up past high school and have nothing better to do other than to go to the bar just to drink and create entertainment by talking crap about other people instead of knowing how to actually have fun and have a real personality. You can tell a lot about a place just by their regulars, let alone the bartender. By far the worst customer service I have ever experienced, locals that go to the bar on a regular basis will come up to you and question and request why you are there. I really like a lot of this bar. The vibe, the pool tables, tunes. But, the last three times my wife and I have been there, our experience has literally been ruined by the bartenders attitude. i don't know her name but she works on Sundays in the early evening and has multi colored hair. She is consistently impatient and really rude. The only people she is decent to are her friends, that are always at the end of the bar. It's oft overlooked on my cycle of LB dive bars, but it's certainly a dive, and has all of the divey things going for it: -Cheap drinks. -Cash only. -Dirty floors. -Pool. -Stroooong cocktails. And I've never noticed before, but recently there seems to be an abundance of college kids here... and bordering on some HB bros too. This bar is a pretty cool place. It does join the ranks of cash only spots in Long Beach. I'm beginning to notice there are quite a few of these, but at least they have an ATM so you can abide by their rules. Nick and I stopped here during a day of bar exploring and since it was late afternoon we were close to the only two people there. We ordered up cocktails and found they were pleasantly stiff. The bartender making the drinks was more than friendly and just the right sort of person you want slinging drinks in a dive-ish bar. If you're into bar games you can play pool, Big Buck Hunter, and the touch screen game here (hello Naked Lady Photohunt!). But, they don't play music in the background so be prepared to spend lots and lots of dollars on the Internet jukebox. My friends and I call this place Dirty Dicks, Dirty Dicks. Clever, no? I used to live right above this place, and would pass by it every weekend en route to the Reno Room. This place is cash only, which is a pain in the ass. There are no taps, so all beer is bottled. I feel like I could contract hepatitis C at any moment from the bartenders, or the stool, or the bathroom, or the rif-raf occupying the place. Let me paint the picture, I once went in there in the middle of the afternoon and found one of the patrons smoking inside. The bartender was totally cool with it. I might go to 36/36 if I was going to prison the next day and I needed 1 last hoorah! They do have a pretty awesome Simpson's pin-ball machine, which is the only reason I'd ever go in there under my own free will, but I'd bring gloves... Recommends: walking to the Reno Room read more

I can't believe that it's taken me two years to visit this bar! Anyway, I'm kinda diggin this bar for several reasons. One, the cheap drinks. Ever since I became unemployed and on summer break from school, I can't complain about the $4 Rum & Coke. Second, the people. I walked in and saw grandpa with a cowboy hat and felt like I was back in Arizona hanging out with my uncle. Besides the seasoned gentleman, there was your typical bro, the Val Kilmer look alike, the country folk, sports people, and Big Buck Hunters--which brings me to my third point. Big Buck Hunters, the shooting video game that will keep you and your friends entertained. I'm not really sure what I was watching (or trying to play), but for whatever reason we all cheered when the player scored. The downfall, the orange gun can be faulty at times. Fourth, it's in walkin distance. Yeah, that's about it. Will I come here again? Probably. I'd make this your second or third bar on your bar crawl. Oh! The downside, the ladies restroom. Although very cute in decoration, they need to put up a sign that says "In Use" "Vacant". There's curtain in lieu of a door so there can be some "Oops, I didn't know you were in there" moments. This bar is a great place to stop if you're going bar-hopping. But it is never the destination. It's dirty, cheap and sketchy. I've had a few rambunctious nights here, with girl friend and guy friends, it's an eclectic crowd. Everything from biker chicks and dudes, to hipsters to addicts to CSULB party people and stragglers from 2nd street. Not a large bar by any means, but enough room for plenty of places to sit or stand and even a pool table and a rock n roll jukebox. Not too shabby. The decor is outdated, kinda funky Las Vegas-ish in a way. But i think that's part of it's charm. Seems like it'd be the place that was breaking the rules about smoking inside for a few years. And i THINK this bar is cash-only but the liquor store next door is open late and you can use their ATM. I'd rather come prepared. It's a very chill local bar that makes it easy hanging out with friends (a la Norm from Cheers) but less Boston and more Long Beach style. For many decades Broadway Boulevard in Long Beach has been the staple of many bar haunts for the US Navy and Port of LA/LB personnel. The 36/36 Club located on Broadway and Euclid has catered to the Navy crowd until the Navy left Long Beach in early 1990's (thank you Barbara Boxer for your local support???). Recently, the 36/36 caters to the residents who live on the east side of Long Beach. These patrons tend to be a more affluent than who live in different parts of the city. With that said here are the Pro and Cons of the 36/36, The Pros. 1) Plenty of room in the club; 2) Nice store front windows that let in daylight; 3) nice clean bar, bathroom and 4) well maintained game area that provides Darts, Pool and Pinball machines. The Cons: 1) The beer price is about 1 dollar more per serving than what is offered at any of the spots on 4th street or on Broadway closer to downtown. 2) The pool table cost 75 cents per game with the cue ball measuring 2 1/4 inch in diameter. Competition pool cue ball is 2 1/8 inch diameter and has magnetic core for ball return . Most other clubs on 4th and Broadway charge 50 cents per game and have competition size cue balls; 3) Parking is on street so easy access to parking a car while enjoying the Belmont Shores area is seldom possible, 4) No happy hour drink specials or specialty pricing to attract customers. 5) No happy hour or special occasion finger food is ever offered, 6) Limited TV access for multiple events and , 7) the upscale cliental that the club wishes caters too, does not frequent the place. To the 36/36 benefit, there are plenty of good quality restaurants to frequent within a short walk. Such notable places as Café Piccolo, EJ Malloy's, and The Attic (formerly Lashers). However, these places are price for their fine quality of food offered. Low cost chain restaurants such as Taco Bell, Domino's Pizza and Hole Mole are close by but there is no food establishment that would offer quality value fare for the residents nearby. This perplexes me. For the relative high cost of libation and the lack of value priced quality food sources nearby, the 36/36 has a serious problem. Maybe they could contract a food truck to come by the club on a regular basis to solve the issue ... but then there is the parking problem! My recommendation ... Go elsewhere; there are many better priced alternatives close by. read more

I am reviewing 36/36 for a couple of reasons. One: I realized that many of my reviews have a negative slant and I have nothing negative to say about 36/36. Two: There are some negative reviews here and I feel the need to defend one of my favorite LB spots. Let's just get this out there right up front: this is a DIVE bar, folks. It does not pretend to be anything else. The bartenders are friendly and cool, but not so cool they can't bother to make you a a kick-ass drink (a few other bartenders around town could take some notes). They'll even order food for you from one of the nearby restaurants should you get hungry. The drinks are cheap (and did I mention kick-ass?), the locals are friendly, the juke box has some good tunes, and there are a couple pool tables to keep you occupied. I've been here with large groups (30-60 people) on more than one occasion and they are always happy to see us--the owner has even bought our entire group a round. Yeah, they don't take plastic. Many a dive bar does not. Come here to hang out with friends and do some serious drinking on the cheap. Otherwise, take your complaining ass and your credit card down the street to Reno Room. TIP: Hit it and quit it early in the evening, the late night crowd tends to be overloaded with drunk frat boys. read more

For years, my friends and I would drive past the 36/36, sure it was just another of the many gay bars on Broadway. Finally, my buddy Joe and I, after another dead night at the Reno Room, decided that we'd take one for the team and check it out. Wow...dark paneling, a rogue's gallery at the bar, a couple of bar hags shooting pool and no kissing guys. As the room demanded, cocktails were ordered and they were good. Last call came all too soon. When we got back to the ranch, we passed the word that the 36 wasn't gay, it wasn't lame and that we would be decamped there for the foreseeable. That was 1993. Since that time, we have drunk there at all hours. We have shot pool there, graffitied the men's room, drunk until shots of Yukon Jack sounded good and they ran out of Bud and so much more. Our friend's bands have been on the jukebox, other friends have been bar tenders, etc. Is this my favorite Long Beach bar? Depends on the day, but it's always on the list and I'm never sorry I've visited. read more

Upon entering this establishment I felt like I had just stepped into a sad 90s metal dive. Maybe it was because I'm from out of town (north and much smaller than long beach), but this just seemed like a sad cliche oldies bar that may or may not cater to the gay crowd. I mean their logo is an upside down pink triangle, right?!! Anyways, there are two pool tables, a juke box, and the bar tender was not really memorable or note worthy. The drinks were average both is price and pour so nothing special there. I wouldn't return, the crowd was very "clicked" in and oblivious to everyone, and the CASH prices weren't that great either. Good dive bar in the area. Great music and pretty cheap drinks :-). Went on a Sunday night and although there were only 6 or so people there the vibe was great! Bartender was really cool....they don't have diet Red Bull for my vodka but he said if I wanted to go to the liquor store next door he had no problem mixing it for me. My only 2 complaints are that they don't have a very good selection of beers on tap and the only decent bottled beer was Stella. Great bar. Super friendly bartenders. Kinda divey but has a real friendly atmosphere. I don't think I've had a night here where I haven't had an interesting conversation. Weekends can get a little busy. People tend to roll in and out in waves. There will be times when you notice that it seems pretty dead, and before you know it it'll be packed. Then it'll die down again. The bar is cash-only, but that usually translates to cheap drinks. If you need cash there is an ATM inside. Most well drinks will cost about $3.50 to $4 or so. As far as entertainment go there's the standard bar stuff. There's a magictouch machine, touchscreen jukebox, two pool tables, Golden Tee, and Buck Hunter. Cons: None really... Some may think that it's bit small, but it really is the perfect size for the type of place that it is. read more

Rating a dive bar is particularly self-contradictory. You can't rate a dive bar based on its beauty or menu. Rather, one must rate a dive based on its "diveyness." That includes a number of factors, such as the strength of its cheap drinks, the blue collarness of its clientele, the jutebox, the dim lighting, and the number of pool tables. Must one necessarily feel a sense of danger? Or does that not take away from its diveyness??? As a dive bar, I give the 36/36 four stars. It's in a nice part of town (although a male friend of mine got robbed by a woman while standing out front) but overall it's quite divey, chalk full of shitty locals, cheap drinks, a rock n roll jute box, and a cigarette machine. I've been on certain nights when the bartenders pour the drinks strong...and other times it's been the opposite. I guess I depends what the bartenders mood is that day.
