Snagged an early seat outdoors, and although it was a bit hot, I appreciated the staff for setting up some umbrellas and a fan for shade. We started with the Mint condition and Penicillin cocktail, both of which was quite good, though I enjoyed the penicillin a bit more. We tried the classic burger with all the fix-ins, along with the French dip. The burger was very decadent, so the French dip was a surprising favorite for me! I was hesitant to make this review---given how prestigious this restaurant is, but I am speaking only from my own experience! I have been wanting to go to 4 Charles for months, and when my sister came to visit, I figured we should try it together. We got in the walk-in line about 2.5 hours early and waited outside until they opened. We were able to dine in right at 4, and the restaurant was very cozy. It is small and dimly lit, and we were both so excited to try the burger and roast beed sandwich. We told the server our order, and the food came out soon after. They forgot our bacon addition to the burger, but we were able to get it on the side after---no big deal. The food overall was good, but when I took that first bite, I realized I may have overhyped the situation. It was a good burger, don't get me wrong. But at the end of the day, a burger is a burger. The bacon was delicious though! As for the sandwich, it was also good, but again, not necessarily outstanding. Considering the price, I realized we were mostly paying for the experience and presentation here. Now for the service, I felt like most of the attention was definitely tailored towards the parties who had a reservation or knew people there. As for my table and the other walk-in table, I noticed that we were approached to less often, and only for the standard water refill. The difference in treatment really highlights the elitist status of 4 Charles, but as someone who is not in that group, I felt less welcomed compared to others. Just getting in here is an experience itself. So we lined up on a Friday at 11:20. There were a good 15 people ahead of us. A lady comes out at 11:45 am to start taking names down for the waitlist. If you are first, you have a good chance for sitting for lunch. We end up being 7th on the waitlist for 4 people. You tell them the timeframe you are willing to come in/wait. So lucky - we ended up getting a table for 6 pm! Of course we ordered the burger and the prime rib sandwich. Those were given. (Btw, Our server was amazing. He was like the host of a private dinner party. ) The burger was great. They did some great surgery to get the egg drizzled all over the burger and split it amongst the table. 4 Charles Prime Rib -- Earned, But Not Easily To be honest, I didn't feel good about 4 Charles Prime Rib at first. Nine tables. Nine. That number alone feels almost insulting. Last Sunday, after doing our research, we showed up an hour early. It was cold, they opened at 11, and there were already about 15 people in line. We were given number nine on the waitlist. No guarantees. If no one canceled, we could be pushed into the next day--literally over 24 hours later. With only nine tables, being ninth basically means don't bother. Even showing up an hour early on a Sunday didn't matter. We waited eight hours that day. Nothing happened. No table, no miracle--just the realization that this place is brutally hard to get into. Our second attempt was Monday. Surely it would be calmer, we thought. We arrived at 2:40 PM and were surprised to see one person already waiting. That day, we barely caught a canceled 6:30 PM slot and waited another two and a half hours before finally sitting down. An exhausting wait. At that point, the question becomes unavoidable: Is anything really worth this? Everything here runs strictly on reservations, and getting one feels close to impossible. So yes, I was already annoyed. What could possibly be so special? I'd heard it's under the same management as Au Cheval--the knife-stuck-through-the-burger presentation and all. This was one stop on our year-end burger tour, and even going into 2026, we felt compelled to try it. Still, while waiting, I kept thinking: After all this, won't it just be the same? Then I noticed the price difference on the menu--$25 versus $39. Not a small gap. And it wasn't just pricing. The quality of the meat was clearly different. The menu said Wagyu burger. One bite was all it took. The flavor, texture, and overall quality were on a completely different level. There was no debate to be had. This was an exceptional burger. The hardest restaurant to get into is 4 Charles in NYC and for good reasoning. The mystic and impossibility of getting a reservation makes one wonder if it is worth it, rest assured, the hype is very much real. My hubby has been eyeing reservations for this place for about 3 months and had no luck. We decided to wait in line on a Monday which we thought was our best bet at 2:15pm to see if we can be seated at opening which was 4pm. Luckily only 1 person in line so we were able to be seated right at opening for 90 minutes. I thought we would have a later time so I felt underdressed but inside is dark, intimate and gives off a rich speakeasy vibe. Honestly it looked like a max seating for 16-20 people which makes sense why reservations are hard to come by. Once we were seated we were enthusiastically greeted by our server. He gave us recommendations on drinks and food and he really did not miss. We started off with the French dip and the corn elote. The French dip was absolutely phenomenal and recommend by all means! The elote was flavorful and had my mouth watering. My hubby ordered the infamous cheeseburger and he validated it was the best burger he ever had. To start the sizzling shrimp scampi was delicious. We split the burger which is absolutely a must and the most delicious burger anywhere. The prime rib French dip is also excellent, a close second to the burger. We also tried the roast prime rib served traditionally and it is amazing. For sides the mac and cheese, spinach and French fries are delicious. The chocolate cake and sundae with all the toppings make dessert a must as well. All the cocktails/wine selection is top notch. I ate here a few weeks ago with a friend. We split one of their famous hamburgers with bacon and an egg. It was delicious! We also split a French dip. This was very good too, but not quite the best French dip I've had. For dessert we split the lemon meringue pie, which was amazing! read more

Fantastic meal!! Came for Sunday lunch as walk in, we arrived 9:30 and were first in line, second group didn't come until just after 10 then line quickly grew. Opened 11 and they only had 1 available table for the day so we got sat immediately and everyone else were listed for any cancellations. Swanky definitely describes the restaurant and staff were so nice and personable/charismatic while incredibly efficient. We split the burger and prime rib, right amount of food for two and truffle Mac, all so delicious. Best burger I've ever had - juicy, thick but not too much, egg and bacon complimented well, and buttery bun. Truffle Mac n cheese was gooey, pasta cooked slightly al dente (very nice). Prime rib had rich flavor with seasoning accompaniment and sauces. Ended with coconut cake that was just divine, great cool temp, perfect amounts of coconut, icing and cake. Came here because it was talk of the town location. Very difficult to get a dinner rsvp so came for lunch which I recommend get there extra early as line can get long for walk ins and might not even be able to get a table. Food overall was good as well as the quality but didn't feel like it was worth the hype. Only thing I regret not getting was their burger people say is great. Service was good as expected and ambiance the indoor seating looked like a 80's speakeasy while the outdoor seating is just 1 table. Good place to try but don't think I'll be back. read more

Walked in twice before being able to get seated but it was worth the experience! The space inside is small but decorated well and I tried their famous burger and french dip. The presentation of the burger cutting the egg yolk was a fun part but I thought the french dip was the star in terms of taste!! The lemon meringue was uniquely huge but too much cream.
