First I'd like to share my findings as an out-of-towner on how to secure a table: - A Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday is your best shot at a seat or a cancellation. - Arrive 1.5 ~2 hours before doors open. Reddit will tell you an hour is sufficient. Reddit is wrong. We arrived an hour and ten minutes early and were tenth in line. Perhaps due to bad luck. But if you want to improve your odds I'd recommend coming earlier. - Only the first two to five parties are likely to be seated at opening. We were tenth in line, which made us fifth on the waitlist. We wandered the West Village, checked back at 7:30, and were told that the list hadn't moved and our odds were slim. We gave up and rode the subway back to Brooklyn. At 8:15, the moment we surfaced, a text arrived telling us our table was ready. We hurried back as fast as we could. I walked in carrying sky-high expectations that no restaurant should be able to survive. 4 Charles cleared them. The dining room has a kind of old-school New-York luxury. Our cancellation had us sit outside instead, which turned out to be its own pleasure. The West Village makes for an excellent place to people watch. Our server deserves his own paragraph. Personable, charming, and confident. He pulled up a chair to take our order, dispensing menu advice and anecdotes like a friend who happens to know everything. The 10oz Double Wagyu Cheeseburger I am not easily impressed. One bite in, I understood I was holding the finest burger of my life. I devoured it in minutes, though it would be truer to say it devoured me. The closest affordable reference point I can offer is a Wendy's Baconator, rich and unapologetically meaty but elevated to the most extreme heights. Truffle Mac & Cheese Mac and cheese has never been my favorite side. This may be the version that converts me. A sauce of silky decadence, the truffle present but never overbearing. Prime Rib French Dip I have loved many a French dip, but 4 Charles has innovated on the sandwich. The jus is infused with pepper oils, a small intervention that transforms a simple sandwich into something layered and complete. Each dripping bite demands the next. Chocolate Cream Pie & Coconut Cake We debated between the two and ordered the coconut cake. The kitchen accidentally sent the chocolate cream pie as well, on the house, so we tried both. If chocolate dessert is your religion, this pie is the cathedral. The coconut cake matches it. My only critique is that both desserts read as too sweet and one-dimensional compared to the savory courses. But our server offered a tip, take a bite of pie and cake together. The combination was electric. Finally, as we finished our meal, we asked the doorman to add us to the Resy Crown list (letting you book through resy) and he happily obliged. But from our table on the patio, we watched a couple approach and simply ask to be put on the list. He put them on the list all the same. So it seems a meal is not strictly the price of admission. Snagged an early seat outdoors, and although it was a bit hot, I appreciated the staff for setting up some umbrellas and a fan for shade. We started with the Mint condition and Penicillin cocktail, both of which was quite good, though I enjoyed the penicillin a bit more. We tried the classic burger with all the fix-ins, along with the French dip. The burger was very decadent, so the French dip was a surprising favorite for me! Once in a lifetime Mediocre Experience. As you will soon find out, this restaurant is one of the most sought after reservations in NYC. Forget about reservations as, they are gone within seconds of opening up two week out. Your only hope, getting there at least 3 hours before opening and waiting for the coveted walk in as only the first 1-3 parties in line will typically get a guaranteed table (Try your best to get the indoor sitting as the ambiance is part of the whole experience). Food wise, there was much to be desired. While their Wagyu double cheeseburger was phenomenal, there was little difference in terms of taste and quality to the Au Cheval Double cheeseburger (The sister restaurant). With a cheaper price point, and much easier walk in availability, save yourself the heartache and just head over to Au Cheval for the same experience. Truffle Mac n Cheese was meh. Similar in quality to your childhood Kraft Mac n Cheese with perhaps a truffle under tone. Prime Rib was okay. Nothing to write home about. Certainly not worth the hype of being the main menu item at NYCs most coveted restaurant. While the meat had an excellent crust on the outside, there was much that wasleft to be desired. The horseradish was bland and at least a quarter of the meat felt as if you were chewing on a truck tire. Overall I would give this restaurant a 6/10 for food and 7/10 for ambience. Just getting in here is an experience itself. So we lined up on a Friday at 11:20. There were a good 15 people ahead of us. A lady comes out at 11:45 am to start taking names down for the waitlist. If you are first, you have a good chance for sitting for lunch. We end up being 7th on the waitlist for 4 people. You tell them the timeframe you are willing to come in/wait. So lucky - we ended up getting a table for 6 pm! Of course we ordered the burger and the prime rib sandwich. Those were given. (Btw, Our server was amazing. He was like the host of a private dinner party. ) The burger was great. They did some great surgery to get the egg drizzled all over the burger and split it amongst the table. The prime rib with the au jus was *chefs kiss*. That sandwich was the best thing I had in a long time. Brussel sprouts were crisp and fresh. Mushrooms were great. I have been wanting to go to 4 Charles for months, and when my sister came to visit, I figured we should try it together. We got in the walk-in line about 2.5 hours early and waited outside until they opened. We were able to dine in right at 4, and the restaurant was very cozy. It is small and dimly lit, and we were both so excited to try the burger and roast beed sandwich. We told the server our order, and the food came out soon after. They forgot our bacon addition to the burger, but we were able to get it on the side after---no big deal. The food overall was good, but when I took that first bite, I realized I may have overhyped the situation. It was a good burger, don't get me wrong. But at the end of the day, a burger is a burger. The bacon was delicious though! As for the sandwich, it was also good, but again, not necessarily outstanding. Considering the price, I realized we were mostly paying for the experience and presentation here. Now for the service, I felt like most of the attention was definitely tailored towards the parties who had a reservation or knew people there. As for my table and the other walk-in table, I noticed that we were approached to less often, and only for the standard water refill. 4 Charles Prime Rib -- Earned, But Not Easily To be honest, I didn't feel good about 4 Charles Prime Rib at first. Nine tables. Nine. That number alone feels almost insulting. Last Sunday, after doing our research, we showed up an hour early. It was cold, they opened at 11, and there were already about 15 people in line. We were given number nine on the waitlist. No guarantees. If no one canceled, we could be pushed into the next day--literally over 24 hours later. With only nine tables, being ninth basically means don't bother. Even showing up an hour early on a Sunday didn't matter. We waited eight hours that day. Nothing happened. No table, no miracle--just the realization that this place is brutally hard to get into. Our second attempt was Monday. Surely it would be calmer, we thought. We arrived at 2:40 PM and were surprised to see one person already waiting. That day, we barely caught a canceled 6:30 PM slot and waited another two and a half hours before finally sitting down. An exhausting wait. At that point, the question becomes unavoidable: Is anything really worth this? Everything here runs strictly on reservations, and getting one feels close to impossible. So yes, I was already annoyed. What could possibly be so special? I'd heard it's under the same management as Au Cheval--the knife-stuck-through-the-burger presentation and all. This was one stop on our year-end burger tour, and even going into 2026, we felt compelled to try it. Still, while waiting, I kept thinking: After all this, won't it just be the same? Then I noticed the price difference on the menu--$25 versus $39. Not a small gap. And it wasn't just pricing. The quality of the meat was clearly different. The menu said Wagyu burger. One bite was all it took. The flavor, texture, and overall quality were on a completely different level. There was no debate to be had. This was an exceptional burger. Honestly it looked like a max seating for 16-20 people which makes sense why reservations are hard to come by. Once we were seated we were enthusiastically greeted by our server. He gave us recommendations on drinks and food and he really did not miss. We started off with the French dip and the corn elote. The French dip was absolutely phenomenal and recommend by all means! Finally ended up getting a resy here - late night 10pm but place was packed. 4 Charles 100% lives up to the hype. Waiters are super attentive. The 2 double cheeseburgers with the egg and thick cut bacon are SO GOOD. Don't skip the side of fries that they come with. We also overindulged and got the bone marrow, shrimp scampi, rib eye steak, elote, and mashed potatoes. Got the chocolate pie for dessert. Martinis are 10/10. My favorite dishes were the burger + fried egg + bacon; bone marrow; French dip ; and elote. The lamb choos were great too. Oddly enough, the prime rib was my least favorite entree. We definitely ordered a lot of dishes to share, but standouts would have to be the Cheeseburger, Little Gem Salad, and the Sizzling Shrimp Scampi. The Cheeseburger was perfectly juicy and a little bit on the saltier end, in which the Little Gem Salad cut in perfectly with a fresh, citrus after taste. Tested our luck on a cold and rainy Tuesday and showed up at 3:25pm to see if they could accommodate a walk-in. We were ecstatic to find there was only one person waiting outside before us! At 3:45pm they started letting people in who had 4:00pm reservations as well as a few of the walk-ins. Everyone who works here is lovely, but Daniel is probably the best server I have ever encountered. He truly made the experience better than we could even have imagined. We started with the Sizzling Shrimp Scampi which was definitely the best I've had. It's loaded with butter, chilies, garlic, and so much flavor. Paired with their golden toasted garlic bread, it's a delicious start. And of course, I wasn't going to leave without trying the Double Wagyu Cheeseburger with Farm Egg & the Prime Rib French Dip. Both were tremendous! The meat quality is undeniably good, the layers of flavor in the burger are so rich and decadent, and the prime rib jus and horseradish cream elevated every bite. The Elote Style Corn was cheesy, creamy, and tasty. Our waiter was nice enough to throw in some Golden Fries for us because in his words "it's a crime to have a burger without fries" and I agree! We ended off with the Lemon Meringue Pie which I usually would never get but I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed the meringue!
