400 Conejos | 400 Rabbits I had seen this place a while ago and wanted to try it; I didn't realize until omw there that it's actually part of Alamo Drafthouse (in the same building) but not really associated otherwise. We sat at the bar to wait for our movie, hoping we'd enjoy some drinks beforehand. I was immediately confused about my chair [high stool] and noticed that the seat itself was lopsided forward, tipping me out! An [older] menu showed they had mezcal flights so I was looking forward to that but when we got there they said they had discontinued it. They only had 1-2 mezcals so that was also disappointing so I just got a neat of each of them. Their food also seemed a bit lackluster, but the place itself is fairly nice so it's a shame that other aspects of it aren't up to par. read more

I love their chicken tenders and Mexican vanilla shake. Very tasty. The Mexican vanilla shake is pretty addictive for me, whenever I had a stressful day from the work, I just wanna come over here and order the Mexican vanilla shake for carry out. The downside is the pricing is a bit over priced. But not too much. It is bearable. It's a restaurant next to the Allamo drafthouse, I used to eat their food while watching some movie. Then I fell in love with their Mexican Vanilla Milkshake. I came here for trivia and it was packed to the gills. Not sure if this is the standard but when we got there about half the tables were reserved for people who come to trivia each week. I get honoring loyalty, but this was a big turnoff for newcomers or people visiting Austin. The biggest perk of this place is the ability to order off the Alamo full food menu for the chocolate chip cookies or bottomless popcorn. Otherwise, it's nothing you couldn't miss for another nearby bar. Perhaps I just hit people on an off night, but that's my opinion. read more

400 Rabbits Bar lives up to it's name serving an impressive list of Mezcal and tequila. The decor is swanky with black plush booths lining the wall, black walls with gold accents and dimly lit (well, at least after sunset). The place is pretty small but there is some room for patrons to stand. The menu items are on the expensive side. We ordered the senoran hot dog which is bacon wrapped dog, grilled with green Chile salsa, beans, pickled onions, jicama, tomato, cilantro mayo, cotija cheese on a bolilo bun. The bacon could have been crisper but overall I enjoyed the flavors of chilies and cilantro mayo but in my opinion not worth $9. The senoran dog was served with a generous portion of chips with delicious warm salsa. The draw here is the Mezcal and tequila which can be purchased by itself or as flights with a small glass of I believe sangrita or tomato juice. Note that the Mezcal flight is $30 and consists of 3 - 3/4 ounce servings. When I consume tequila or Mezcal, my evil twin tends to make an appearance. And no one likes her, I promise. With that said I tried one of their specialty cocktails, the Lester Burnham. This light refreshing drink is definitely an acquired taste. It consists of gin, San Pelegrino Limonita, rose water, prosecco and candied rose petals. Jesse ordered the Manhattan. Although the drinks were pricey they were STRONG making it justifiable. After a couple drinks here you will leave a drunken rabbit. Besides the drinks we enjoyed, they have an extensive specialty cocktail list along with beer and wine. I would definitely grab a drink here before/after watching a movie at this Alamo but I will likely skip the food next time. read more

Really a 3 plus...400 Rabbits is not just a place to grab a drink while waiting for your movie to begin, it's a destination bar for us. It also happens to be in our hood, which makes it very convenient indeed. We have frequented the bar a few times now without so much as wanting to see a movie. What we like? We love the decor and retro feel of the bar itself. We like sitting in the middle of the bar so we can watch the black and white silent movies on the screen in the lobby of Alamo. We like a certain blonde, bubbly waitress who always seems to be happier than my Suzie, which is quite a feat in itself. The Grilled Elotes are really yummy, but incredibly messy. They need to have a couple of corn stabby handle things so you don't have to cover your fingers with butter/mayo and spice. Having just said that, what the hell is wrong with having butter/mayo/spice hands? At least give us an option please. What is average? Service can be a challenge at times. If our blondie is not working, you can sit around for awhile with an empty drink in front of you.. even at the bar. If you are there for Happy Hour, it would be really refreshing if they would come by the table and ask if you would like another drink before HH ends. When movies are cycling in and out, you can be left a little abandoned while the hustle of getting new drinks out to folks ensues. I am not totally convinced that the Bartenders really know a great deal about all the Tequilas they serve, which as a Tequila Themed bar, they really should know how one differs from the other. We enjoy 400 Rabbits and can see how it could be really awesome destination for drinks and munchies for the neighborhood. Wait staff extremely frustrated, understandable if people called in on a Friday night, but to take it out on newly arriving customers that have no clue as to your current staffing situation is straight up rude and unacceptable. We had to figure out whether to seat ourselves or wait, by asking. No eye contact from either waiter/waitress. Annoyed the waitress told us to sit anywhere and someone will be with us. We sat at a dirty table didn't see a better option. After 5 minutes we were approached but after a hufff and a puff the fat winded waiter walked off without saying a word then came back with a towel and aggressively began to wipe the table. Mid-wipe I told the waiter we are just going to go somewhere else and he condescendingly responded "Oh! Perfect! Thank you ladies!" I have to hand it to any bar attached to a movie theater that doesn't jack up their prices. All the craft beer varied from $4-6. That's incredible considering a $4 pint is unheard of in ATX. Alamo had gotten a lot of grief in the past couple of years, but they keep raising the bar. We've all have just gotten complacent. read more

Just ate here and a few problems: 1) service was absolute garbage, seriously atrocious. 2) food took over 40 minutes to arrive, in that time the server didn't think to put a set of cutlery on our table. 3) I think my dish was actually someone's leftovers from Alamo, some of the spinach had fork holes in it and the dismal amount chicken looked old (another reason I think it was someone else's dish, there was almost no chicken.) 4) I'm currently on the toilet in my apartment blasting the bowl, leftover chicken is even worse coming out. I won't be coming to this bar, or Alamo ever again. I hope this place gets shut down before they give food poisoning to someone who can get seriously ill. read more

I should have posted this months ago but didn't because it kinda broke my heart. We've been Alamo Drafthouse fans for 20+ years so I really want to love and appreciate this location -- but the food is awful and the service at 400 Rabbits is unpredictable. It hasn't always been that way. But the last year or so, I've met friends on several occasions for drinks and snacks. Chewy nuts, flat drinks. My last visit was the final straw: I couldn't even get a glass of water and the two dishes we ordered were terrible. Chili fries and pumpkin dip. Overly complicated food ideas and poorly executed. The pumpkin dip was bland and unappetizing. The fries were almost inedible but it came with a dip that made them bearable. Please managers, fix this place. We love having an Alamo in 78739. We don't want some chain to come in and sweep us off our feet. But it wouldn't take much. read more

I love coming here for happy hour . The drinks are yummy and only about $5 for a rather large, quality cocktail. I always get the buffalo cauliflower with vegan ranch. SO GOOD!! I highly recommend if you are about to see a flick or maybe after your film. Obviously you can eat in the Alamo that's connected but I personally don't fully enjoy my meal in the dark and my mind is occupied on the film. The staff is friendly but if you sit outside you might need to go let them know what you want if the bar is busy (depending on the time you go) bathrooms are super clean ! Enjoy ! read more

400 Rabbits has about 400 awesome things about it. I can't name them all but I can name a few, at least. The drinks. Oh, the drinks. Not being much of a tequila fan in a tequila-concept bar, I found there were a lot of options on non-tequila drinks. Straying from the usual open-bar choices, I got a variety of their specialty cocktails and every one was SO GOOD. I particularly liked the Lotus and the Bloody Mary cocktail (like a bloody mary but served in a martini glass with olive oil - olive oil! weird, right? nope. awesome). We sat at the bar and all of the staff were really friendly and really knew the menu well. Anyway, it's a pretty small bar, but has a lot of seating inside and out and the specialty food items were really good as well. Coming to the new Alamo for a movie? Stop in here for a pre-movie drink or bite - it'll be well worth your wait. read more

This bar is connected to the Slaughter Lane Alamo Drafthouse, making it a nice way to kill time while waiting for your movie to start. We had about half an hour to spare and lucky for us, got to partake in the happy hour specials. Happy hour is Monday-Friday 4-7 and all day on Sunday's. They have a Mexican inspired menu so there are a lot of tequila drinks (they even do flights) as well as dishes like queso con chorizo and grilled elotes which are corn on the cob with mayo, queso cotija, lime, and chili. We had tickets to what they call a 'feast', where dinner is included with the movie, so we only wanted drinks. They have a lot of fun ones here and one called the Love Bug caught my eye which I think was made with sparkling wine, strawberry, lemon, and honey? I can't remember but I do know it was like $9. Gut punch! I instead went with the more pocket friendly option of the happy hour Austin Eastciders Original Cider for $5. I'd never tried it before and it was really good! My husband got a Karbach Sympathy for the lager for $3 which he also enjoyed. The inside is small but there are both sit down and stand at tables, as well as bar seating. They also have games you can borrow and play while you are there which I think is awesome. And bonus! If you haven't finished your drink by the time your theater opens, they are cool with you taking it in there. read more

Nice bar. Love the Afinidad which consists of mezcal, sweet vermouth and dry vermouth. It starts out with a strong bite then a refreshing light finish. I've had the Sonoran hot dog twice now. This is a hefty dog with a lot of toppings. It doesn't really look like the Sonoran dogs i've seen in pictures that look like a cheap traditional hot dog wrapped in bacon, sprinkled with cheese and drizzled with spicy mayo. Not saying the 400 Rabbits take is bad. It's not. I just still desire to finally eat one of the cheap ones! This version is pretty messy. Have the napkin ready. I might ask for extra cilantro mayo next time. The "oh so bad for you that I haven't eaten them in 25 years" pork rinds taste amazing. They stayed hot for half an hour! Definitely home made. My only fault with them is they are small and not really suitable for dipping into the supplied salsa. Staff is friendly and happily make suggestions. The Highball meets Circle C class. Stopped in to see what the hype was about and found some eager bartenders and an interesting cocktail menu. Yes, they've got plenty of tequila, mezcal, and sotol. This place would be great for a date night, but not my type of place to hang out at on a normal basis. The 400 rabbits concept seems a little elitist to me, which might be fitting for the Circle C crowd. However, I am not an elitist, nor do I wish to be one of the select few in the club. The fact that I can find a real bar serving real vintage cocktails INSIDE of a movie theatre makes me love Austin all that much more. No longer do I have to rely on beer when I go to the Alamo to see a movie, now I can have a real drink, not some gross nonsense that people call a "drink." 400 Rabbits has gorgeous leather chairs to use when you're waiting for the line for your movie to queue up. You can also order inside of the theatre from the 400 Rabbits menu, which has better food and better drinks. Perhaps the best part about 400 rabbits is you can order a drink from their bar and then wait in line with it while you wait for the theatre to open. The drinks are great, but I was not impressed by the Sonoran hot dog I ordered off the bar menu. The hot dog part of it was pretty good, but I didn't care for the toppings or the bun. There was a green, thick sauce which was either hot guacamole or green chili, tasteless refried beans, lettuce, tomato, and red onion in a botillo (aka hoagie bun). Apparently there was also supposed to be cilantro mayo on there but I barely got a hint of that. It also came with chips and hot tomato sauce (NOT salsa). Although the portions were generous, I favor quality over quantity. You can actually order anything off the Drafthouse menu, but I did not know that at the time. Our waiter did a decent job until it came time to split the check. There were 5 people in our group, and we asked him to split the check by seat. He left off a couple of items we had ordered and lumped 2 people's tabs together. Despite an inauspicious beginning, I'm willing to give 400 Rabbits the benefit of the doubt. They host a Geeks Who Drink trivia on Monday nights and I like their drinks. They make a good brandy old fashioned. read more

I went here for the grand opening of the new drafthouse. And I am well acquainted with their reputation for classy eats and drinks, so my expectations were high. They were easily exceeded. I love the decor and the ambiance of this place. I tried a variety of the cocktails, and they were *just* right(the Aviator and Corpse Reviver#2 were the ones I had here-plus some more in the theater). Is it pricey? Yes. But it's not like the prices aren't justified. The only real concern I have is that it's relatively small. I feel like this will be really crowded in the near future, leaving many to find somewhere else to get an after-movie drink. read more

Stopped in here before Magic Mike to try it out. My friend and I were planning on actually eating dinner here. This is more of a cocktail and appetizer bar. The decor is nice (think Highball), the service was good, but I wasn't really impressed with the menu. Another reviewer said that you could order full dinner here. I didn't see that menu if that's true. What I saw had about 5 items and they were more appetizers. I'm having trouble getting to the menu but we had the queso (which is really fried cheese). I'm not sure if it's supposed to be burnt-ish, because cheese does that when fried but it was very greasy and I don't think I'd order it again. We also had chips and the three dips. Mr. Smidgens has always been a supporter of the Alamo Drafthouse and it's other ventures. Heck I even rented out a theater once for my friends to watch a special screening. Finally making my way to the newest location off of Slaughter lane, I picked up tickets for Robynn G. and myself and decided the Smidge needed to try out this 400 Rabbits. Walking distance from inside the lobby of the Drafthouse I sat down at the bar and enjoyed the sight of all the tequilas they had to offer. I was a little disappointed they did not have the Puro Verde One Ten uncut tequila. I decided to try the El Diablo. It consisted of a mix of reposado tequila, lime, ginger beer, and Casis 89. It was thirst quenching. Whilst I enjoyed my tasty libation I ordered the Alambres. These wonderful grilled skewers of succulent NY strip, bacon, and pablano peppers on avocado tomatillo hatch with cotija cheese. I have to say, not only was I impressed with the plating and presentation of this mouth watering treat, but I was actually brought to an eye closing, mouth salivating, sound making moment as I took bite after bite of this OUTSTANDING dish!! This is the ideal place to wait before they start seating for your movies. I like this Drafthouse, but it's a bit far from my apartment, so it's nice to have a place to wait attached to the theater. The interior's a bit small, but the patio is fairly expansive. The food is, well, Drafthouse food. Most of it's pretty tasty. They have a few more drinks on the menu over here than they do in the main theater. My favorite's the Corpse Reviver. Gin, absinthe and a few other tasty treats mixed together in a martini glass. It tastes a bit like a lemon drop. What's not to like? I like the name, too. They have a giant bunny for a sign. I like bunnies. Me gusta. read more

[Note I have only been here before or after a movie, never as a standalone destination] When I come to Alamo Slaughter I will often hang for a beverage here before, during (see below!), or after the movie. The cocktails are excellent! They do classics like a Moscow Mule or Corpse Reviver, have a variety of margaritas (on the rocks, no frozen mix here), and their signature cocktails - all crafted from tequila or mezcal - are something special. Examples: LA MANZANA DE FUMAR - Reposado mezcal, apple liquer, tamarind-arbol chile syrup. PASADO DE MODA - Silver tequila, mezcal, honey, mole bitters, orange peel Goodness. The cocktails aren't cheap (all about $8-10), but these b-tenders know what they are doing and these tasty bevies pack a punch. (Admission: first time I've ever used b-tender in a sentence, not sure if I can get away with it. But I just saw that hysterical episode of Parks & Rec where John Ralfio says- wait, I'll just post the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5uoNFQEotQ Hysterical.) They also have some Mexican munchies like chili lime "cerveza nuts" and tostadas with grilled shrimp (and it seems like the menu is different each time?) There is outdoor seating with patio furniture and fancy cocktails inside. Kyle helped us, and was very helpful when we were choosing beverages. If I had come for just the drinks and sat at the bar, I think I would have rated this much higher. I tried the Paloma and it was very refreshing and packed a punch. My husband and I ordered a bunch of the food-queso (delish!), elote (delish!) and tacos (almost delish...the tortillas were dried out and they put a slice of cheese in there...it's really not hard to switch that out to some nice cotija, is it? Chicken and salsa were tasty). The food wasn't spectacular, but solid enough. The main reason this is a low rating was due to the service!! Our server was inattentive not only to us, but the other tables too. One couple just got up and left after waiting some time to even be acknowledged. The server's attitude was one, not of rudeness, but of really not caring about serving the customer even at the most basic level. She really looked and acted like she'd rather be doing pretty much anything else. We are a pretty easy table with few questions, no "special" requests and made a pretty large order (and were ready to tip accordingly!). Perhaps she was having a bad day, I don't know, but she really killed the vibe of what could have been a pretty spiffy experience. I frequent the alamo regularly. If the service had even been normal, I'd consider revisiting 400 rabbits for a pre movie beverage. As my experience stands, I'll just stick with the alamo. So the drink menu was designed by the same guy that does the drinks at Haddington's. I LOVE HADDINGTONS. Great drinks and well worth the prices. The bar tenders there know their stuff. So for me the bar is set. Well 400 rabbits cocktails are terrible compared to Haddingtons. Maybe it is because they just opened, but they didn't know how to make the drinks and I could see the bar tender in front of me reading off a piece of paper trying to make them. I asked them if the drinks taste like the ones at Haddingtons. The guy is like "what is Haddingtons?" Sazerac at Haddingtons: 10/10. Here 5/10. Completely watery, full of ice. NOT worth 8 dollars. Manhattan here: 6/10 The staff for food here are not good either. 3 times they forgot to bring out things for the order. I hope all these issues are just b/c they are new. Otherwise, I'm not gonna go here for drinks (not movies) even though they are right in my backyard. Guess South Austin suburbia will never get a decent bar. Came here for drinks and food pre-movie with some friends last week. Service was so unfortunately slow but just for our table. 2 groups of people came after us and sat down at other tables, and already had menus, ordered drinks and received their drinks before we even had a waiter come to our table to give us menus. Once a waiter noticed us, we ordered drinks and food and it was all delicious. I ordered off the full menu which takes much longer than ordering from the bar menu - which I was fine with. I got the squash mac n cheese - A+ would order again! I had their Moscow Mule which was delicious.
