I came in with a friend after a long day, just wanting some good sushi. We ordered a California roll and a salmon roll. The California roll was made with packaged imitation crab instead of a proper crab mix, which was disappointing and not what we expected quality-wise. The overall environment also wasn't great. Being downtown, there was a lot of people constantly going in and out, which made it feel a bit chaotic and honestly a little unsafe at times. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this spot. There are definitely better options nearby.

If we were rich we would have doubled that order. Each piece was treasured. We finished with the Okinawa Sweet Potato Butter Cake which was recommended for a cold day. Fantastic! Really nice variety, and everything was super fresh, rice was nice texture. My favorite was the scallops, which were sliced perfectly. Also got to try two of the rolls, the unicorn and the sunset. Usually I don't prefer these really complicated rolls, but weirdly found the spicy oil on the unicorn really good. Lastly, got the uni nigiri, which was big and appropriately stinky, really enjoyed the shreds of wasabi that came with it too. Service was really good, chill setting, made for a nice dinner out even with a baby in tow. Glad we got to come here while we were in town!

I also had a sunshine roll, which was great. I could taste literally every single ingredient of the roll in every single bite, through every second of chewing. The baked green mussels were delicious as well. The Kodama was pretty good, a little sweet, but still good. Service was quick, staff was very friendly and helpful, it was very quiet, clean, and the vibe was very relaxed. If I'm back in Portland again, this is one of the first places I'm coming back to. 5/5, if there was a gold star 5/5 I would give it to Kaizen.

With a combined 115 years of experience this restaurant shines with what feels like authentic sushi. We were there with a group of four and were seated promptly for our reservation at 5:45 PM. But now to the meat of the review or should I say fish? Service was average, but the food more than made up for it. Because of that first experience, we decided to place a fairly large takeout order for a family dinner last night. Big mistake. We were told the order would be ready in 30 minutes. We arrived on time only to discover they had not even started preparing it yet. The explanation was "a computer issue," but nobody called us to let us know there would be a delay, and no real apology was offered. By the time we finally got the food, we were already late for dinner and had to head straight home. When we opened the bag, the nigiri had been packed so poorly that everything was jumbled together in a heap. We literally spent 10 minutes trying to reassemble the sushi ourselves. What disappointed us most was the way management handled the situation afterward. We called expecting that a restaurant positioning itself as upscale would want to make things right. Instead, the manager argued with us, reviewed security footage, and claimed that because we briefly checked the bag at pickup, the order must have been fine when it left the restaurant. We checked that the boxes were there -- we did not open every container because we trusted the restaurant to package the food properly. The bottom line: the dine-in experience may still be worth it because the food itself is genuinely very good, but based on our experience, order takeout at your own risk.
