After waiting in line for a half-hour for a table, I was surprised that the food was only mediocre and the prices were a bit high. Our meals were made incorrectly and we nicely sent them back to be fixed. The kitchen made it clear that they were not happy about it but our waitress was nice and handled it politely. The atmosphere was a typical diner. The restaurant could use a good cleaning, especially the ladies room! A little pricey and I'm always shocked that they only take cash......minus the star for that one. The waitresses are alittle brisk but manage to turnover the room quickly....the line is always out the door. 50s Diner has been my go to spot for years now. They consistently have an excellent breakfast and great service. Used to work in the area and got an "Ernie Burger" to go all the time. Now I live a half hour away but still make the trip here from time to time because it is so good! read more

I always drive by this diner on the weekends and I always see a long line of people outside, waiting to get in. I recently went on a weekday to avoid the lines. Overall I had a good experience. I ordered the corn beef hash & american cheese omelet which was really good. (Their corn beef hash is homemade, not from a can.) While this omelet may seem a tad pricey at $12.00 a plate, it was of a decent portion size and their corn beef hash was really good although I found the accompanying home fries plain and lacking flavor. I was amazed with how quickly my meal was served to me. (A matter of minutes.) The service was adequate. Please note, the 50's Diner does NOT accept credit cards. I think they should do MORE to advertise this fact, perhaps placing a sign on the front entrance door. The only notification I saw was a small sign near the cash register and I only noticed this sign after I was told they didn't accept credit cards and I went looking to see if this policy was something I should have noticed early on. Read prior reviews and I was in the area. The wait was long even before noon. I had a salad that seemed long on cost and short on substance. It had a couple of slices of plastic tomatoes and some slices of mushrooms. I think it cost nearly 9.00$. Extra dressing was extra money. I have had much better for this amount. I really dont understand the appeal of this place, but then i'm not a seinor citizen i guess. :) Personally I like a more updated style of decor, but its sort of cute in a way. Service will be better if you go on non-peak hours.The food is OK, but not much better, although I have been here for lunch more times than for breakfast and breakfast is more what they are known for. They do have yummy pancakes, but I dont really see pancakes as being that difficult of an item to make. My wife used to go here years ago and loved it so we took the family for the first time today. The food was average, at best, and expensive for breakfast. A greek omelet was undercooked and fairly tasteless. The pancakes were okay, also a tad on the undercooked side. The largest issue, frankly, was the manager/host who was gruff and scared our 3 year old. There are a lot of better places that are truly welcoming to toddlers/kids, where the food is tastier and less expensive. We will not be returning. read more

3.5 stars for The 50's Diner. This diner is hidden on the outskirts of the new Legacy Place in Dedham. The wait was about 15-20 minutes yesterday around 1pm. Not too bad, even if we did have to stand in line the whole time (you can't give your name to hold your spot). The decor of this place was very cute...as if it were pulled out of a scene in Grease. My 3 friends and I each ordered a sandwich which came with either fries or rippled chips. The soda glasses are HUGE and the coffee is bottomless. Our sandwiches were cooked perfectly, and the fries were piled high on our plates. Our service was friendly, attentive, and professional. The sandwiches ranged between 6 to 8 dollars each, with the beverages around 2. I also noticed some disclaimers on their menu that stated that receipts of over $45 have an automatic 18% gratuity added as well as an extra charge for people who share meals. I suspect that this place would be perfect the morning after a rough night out. They offer a varied selection for both breakfast and lunch. Great food, awesome decor, and a very friendly staff. Came right around noon but they serve lunch all day so my friend got the 50's Special Platter which is A LOT of delicious food. The Texas toast French toast was easily some of the best French toast I've ever tried. I had one of their specials, an egg salad sandwich, which was good but needed to have a bit more of the egg salad on the sandwich as it felt like there was too much bread. My wife and I were regular breakfast visitors here until we moved recently. Their frappe/milkshake is second to none, thick, inexpensive and in a double quantity. The omelets are made with fresh eggs and are substantial and the spinach is a good amount and well sauteed. Their links are also fresh and tasty and their bacon is exceptionally well done and crunchy. The juices are the usual concentrate based ones. Their coffee got a lot better off late. Their home fries are tasty without being greasy and they give a lot of them. Service is fast and friendly. The atmosphere is not exactly that of a 50s diner with shiny metal, but they do have a lot of posters and booths to get close to that idea. There is ample parking available all around. Prices have gone up off late. The times of $20 with two are over. The same now costs $28-30. Still that is not really 'big inflation' over a period of 8 years. Payment is accepted in cash only. Some people see that as a negative, but their policy is plastered everywhere, even at the door, so they are really not hiding it. I think it keeps prices a lot lower that way and the customers then benefit. read more

Staff is amazing! It was so busy, with a line literally 30ft out the door (every time I drive by there is) but they get through it quickly and courteously. Coffee was 5/5 as far as diner coffee goes. This is a great breakfast option in Dedham. Located on Route 1, it is a little hard to figure out how to get to it but once you do, it is worth It. Waitstaff is attentive and regularly fill up coffee mugs. Every time we have been for breakfast, the servers have been nice. With this, the lines of people waiting to experience the food are generally out the door. Food portions are huge. The food is tasty too. They prepare their own homemade corned beef hash and it is probably one of the best things on the menu. Their pancakes are also large. This diner has a 1950's theme. i had a very good lunch here recently. the Deluxe Burger was fabulous, the cole slaw and potato salad very home made tasting and i felt very satisfied afterward. I would have given 5 stars after that but my biggest problem has been the breakfast sandwiches i have ordered a few times now. i always ask that the eggs be cooked well, with no bleeding yolk. 8 out of 10 times it has been runny and a mess. i keep going back thinking if I ask them to cook it the way I want, they will do so. today was the last time i'll order a breakfast sandwich there. i stressed the fact that i wanted the egg cooked well. opened it up, yolk everywhere. obviously no one cared to make it the way I'd asked. I normally don't complain about things, but this last time really ticked me off. it looks like they have done a great job for other people though, so that's nice. read more
