This place is fabulous! We love their turkey and meatball subs! My husband and I were planning a Flag Day party for today and had placed a catering order for subs a few days ago. We ended up not needing the catering order because the parade was cancelled due to storms but since the parade didn't get cancelled until the morning of we didn't bother calling and cancelling the catering order (holding out hope). Nonetheless when we went to pick it up the owner gave us 1/2 off the price for our troubles which was not expected and I really appreciated! Salem Food Market is more expensive than their 5 or 6 competitors in Dedham for their sandwiches, subs. wraps, panini, burgers, pasta and dinners. Probably worth the extra money. The older gentleman who answers the phone is rude beyond belief. Salem used to have a $15 minimum for delivery then supposedly changed it to $10. Truth be told, that's baloney as they refused $15 to $20 orders. I tried to meet or exceed the minimum despite my elderly mother who lives in Dedham not eating much. This man sounded like the owner. He's a crook whose prices are substantially higher than their website prices. Substantially. I asked how much it was for a few items and was quoted $25 for a $15 order, etc etc. I really tried to order from this rude guy. When I told him I had to check with my 94 year old mother who lives in Dedham, the rude jerk said he would have to check with his father about my order. All I was trying to do was place an order for delivery above his minimum. Clearly Salem Food Market's minimum for delivery is false. They only want larger orders. Then why doesn't he have a $25 or $30 minimum? Why ridicule paying customers? The smart aleck didn't realize my mother lives in a huge senior citizen complex in Dedham with maybe 1000 residents. Great sandwiches, poor service in May 2019. There was a line to order food. It was my turn to order a woman (30s-ish) looks at me like I just cut in line. The people around me said said "nope" indicating it was my turn to order. I feel stupid. She looks at me like "WTF do you want". I order a turkey sub and am am specific about what I want on it. She doesn't break eye contact with her WTF look in her eyes. She writes nothing down. I say "did you get that?" Now she really gives me the stink eye and says "yes". Five minutes later my order is up. She rings me up at the register and I decide to turn the tables and check to see if the sub has everything I asked for. She looks like she wants to kill me now. Sure enough... no tomatoes and no mayo. I say in a vindicated voice.. "No tomatoes. I asked for tomatoes." She swipes it from me and the nice dude making the sandwich puts them on. I ask about mayo.. He said "I didn't put any on. I only put on what the slip tells me to." I look at the woman who looks like she wants to kick me in the teeth. I say "I asked for tomatoes and mayo. When I ordered I was concerned you weren't listening." She snarls back fast "You were confused and undecided about what you wanted to order." I say "Nope. I was 100 percent sure." She rings me up. An older guy who made the sandwich says loudly... "Ring 'em up. Keep it moving." No apology? No, customer is always right. Just bad vibes. They make AWESOME sandwiches. The place that reminds you of that little family joint that your father took you to that had the ultimate Italian sub. Well, I found it. Actually, I found it a few years ago, I just hadn't shared it with anyone yet. Yup. This is the place! Great Italian Sub. And, although that is my go to, I have tried several others. I have been looking for a good sub market that actually listens to the wants in a sandwich from customers. We have ordered turkey sandwiches and we ask for extra turkey and we do get the extra we requested and it is delicious. Have gone to 4 in the area with disappointment on each and now we found the right one. Real veal, not patties, and lightly breaded eggplant. Nice sauce, real Italian, not too sweet. The real bakery sub rolls made this my new reason to forget D'Angelos. The fries are just wonderful. The oil had to be very clean, and they are normal French fry size. A small order will feed three normal folks. The owner and staff were very nice making the limited street parking the only drawback. Long story short: -Sub-par food -Rude owners/cooks that mistreat their employees -cute place that I want to like but now never can I watched the very polite girl working the register (Brittany?) write down my order perfectly and pass it to the kitchen (a few minutes after hearing them yell at her for giving them a comment and not writing it down on a slip). Some ridiculously long amount of time for a sandwich and a small order of fries later, a cold sandwich is brought out with, like, a tiny cube of cheese added to it, no fries and none of the spicy sauce i asked for and watched the girl write down. While waiting and eating my cold sandwich, I also got to hear the owners continue to berate the girl whenever they got a chance while also chit-chatting with people they knew inside the restaurant. With Salem, we hit the jackpot. Our sandwiches are fresh and delicious every week. The coldcuts are top quality. Our orders almost always arrive on time, and if Salem is very busy, they inform us on the phone so we know our food might take longer than usual. Because I am so impressed with Salem, I stop in to buy dinner on nights I am too busy to cook. One night, I bought spaghetti carbonara on impulse. I am not a spaghetti lover, but it looked tasty. This turned out to be one of the best meals I have had in my life. It was absolutely delicious. Usually I get sandwiches or paninis which are always great but today I picked up some eggplant parm with bow ties and it was hands down the best eggplant I have ever had. I hired Fred, the owner, to cater a recent cookout for my girlfriends graduation and couldn't be happier with how things turned out. Somehow I originally told him the party was on Saturday when it was actually on the Sunday. I called few days in advance, and even though they aren't open on Sunday's, he made it happen. Aside from the food being incredible and very reasonably priced, Fred is the type of business owner that "gets it," and always puts his customers first. As a fellow business owner myself, it is refreshing to deal with someone who takes such pride in their work. Well, let me start off with a disclosure: the owner/manager/CEO Fred has been a close friend of mine for over 20 years (my God). I know the guy to be among the hardest working, most loyal, and trustworthy people I have ever been around. There is no question as to who I support in the ongoing blood feud between Salem Food Market and the evil Deli After Dark. That being said, I wouldn't besmirch the esteemed reputation of my Yelp page with a good review if I did not fully endorse the food here. My lunch time at work is tight and Salem Food Market keeps me (and often co-workers) nourished once or twice a week with timely lunch time deliveries. My favorites: chicken Caesar salad, chicken tip sub with veggies, BBQ steak tip sub. But be sure to ask about and sample the rotating pasta entrees that are made fresh daily like chicken cacciatore, chicken ziti broccoli, and several others which are always tasty and filling. Let us not forget the time I was able to feed the entire Mullin clan (six-footers, all of them) with the help of Fred's catered order of a tray of eggplant parm. The abundant extra sauce he threw in was also crucial in adding to the pasta I bought from him and made to go alongside. That eggplant parm was basically a PED for the Mullins and I as we all successfully completed a triathalon the next day. A trusted source also informed me the other night that he and his domestic partner loved the new buffalo wings, so I will have to check those out soon. read more
