The food is great and the service is fast. We usually do takeout, so not sure about the ambience, but you should check it out.

Ordered take out on a whim because I had some Uber Eats credits. Prices are excellent, but portions are perhaps a tad smaller than other places. I like that they used mostly non plastic packing material, and that the Thai teas came with a drink tray to prevent spilling on the ride over. Utensils only to request. Everything was delicious. Tom yum got the signature tang, and an ok amount of mushrooms in it. The pad Thai actually came with 2 toppings, so I ordered veggie and chicken, and the amount in relation to noodles was a pleasant surprise. Tasted excellent too, and spicier than most other places just like I wanted. Drunken noodles also perfectly cooked, but not really spicy even though I ordered hot. The massa man chicken curry was to die for. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The Thai tea with boba could not get any better. Not too sweet for the tea, and perfectly iced to keep chilled. The boba had the perfect chew even at the end of the meal when most other boba in iced or frozen drinks always get too hard and unpleasant. I think I've found my new go to Thai delivery and might one day visit in person too! read more

I've only eating here once, and I ordered the ginger stirfry. I've had this dish and other Thai restaurants, and I've certainly ordered it a lot throughout my life. it has been flavorful and zingy at other thai establishments. This dish was neither. I went to Trader Joe's and picked up some Thai curry sauce to add to make it taste like what you're finding a normal restaurant. I don't know if that Ginger dish blandness was just a one time mistake or if that's just their style. I hope they get better. read more

I love 55 Thai! This one was located inside a convenience store which was kind of cool actually! I always get the yellow curry with chicken and a Thai tea or Thai iced coffee. Their yellow curry is absolutely so delicious and a little spicy! I've gotten it a handful of times and the quality is great every time. They make the food relatively fast too, but I usually order online and it's ready when I get there! Some seating outside which is nice too! read more

maybe i should have read the yelp reviews before heading over... I was so confused, couldn't find it. it's because it's inside the liqour store on the corner. There are a few tables outside that you can eat at. Also a few tables inside but there's little to no AC and its HOT back there since it's an open kitchen. I don't think they bring the food out to you if you're sitting outside so you need to go in periodically to check. The gai tod (their version of fried chicken / popcorn chicken / chicken nuggets?) was AMAZING basically juicy nuggets of chicken... I'm pretty sure its mixed with something else to get that more meatball like consistency. Makes it more springy / tender. Everytime someone mentions Thai food, I just crave pad thai. Though I love tom yum, pad see ew, curry... ect. I just always want pad thai. So I got it. Pretty good. This off shoot is located in the back of the corner mart and honestly, that was my first indication of how good it would be. Had also been told by neighbors that it was the place to go. I wasn't too hungry, but wanted something comforting, warm and to remind me of home. Tom Kha soup with chicken and a spring roll did the trick! The OG location of 55 Thai Kitchen is nestled in the back of a liquor store in the Golden Hill neighborhood. It's not the first place to come to mind for Thai cuisine, but it has worked out over the years. There's very limited seating (i.e. a few small tables) so the take-out business is perfect for these times. The menu is not as extensive compared to similar eateries which makes sense given their small kitchen preparation area. What I ordered during my visit was the drunken noodles with beef and a mango green tea with boba. The portion size of the noodle dish was very good for the charged price while the flavoring and spiciness were better than I had expected. The boba tea was the weakness as it tasted bland. The total for my order was $16 including tax and tip. The value for the food and drink was the reason why I elevated my rating from three stars to four stars. read more

For the past couple years, Thai 55 has been my go to spot for Thai in San Diego. This was because the taste and quality of their food was top notch. We took a few months off ordering from Thai 55 and was really excited to grab some takeout tonight. When we got home we couldn't believe the change in the meats that they serve with their dishes. Previously, the meat was high quality beef and chicken. It wasn't your normal robot beef/chicken you see from some Asian spots. This meat tonight was flavorless, flat, and chewy. Not the robust slices of meat we have been accustomed to for years. This is such a shame because Thai 55 really had a good thing going. The quality of your product is that drives business your way. It's when you begin cutting corners to save some $$ is when you begin losing customers. I really hope this message makes it to the right people and Thai 55 can bring back that good good. read more

55 Thai is sooooo good! Very reasonably priced and fast too. Some of my personal favorites are the tom kha (with or without noodles), the drunken noodles and pad see ew, and the yellow curry! I generally get them all with tofu, but you can choose from several other proteins too. Definitely don't think it's the healthiest, but wow is it delicious. read more

Located in the back of a corner market you're welcomed as you enter with the whiff of Thai food. For the price, it's a good value to the portion size. I ordered a shrimp tom yum, shrimp tom kha, beef fried rice, and chicken pad thai for all under $30. So it's fairly reasonable in price. Their food is flavorful from the noodles to soup to rice. Although their tom yum was a little sweeter than I'm used too. Pad thai a little on the sweeter side too. Not bad. Just different. The beef in their fried rice. I'm not sure what cut it was. Wish it had more of a sear/char to it. Their food is far from bland. Give them a try! The staff is extremely friendly too. read more

I regret to say that my recent takeout experience was disappointing. The quality of the food was simply unacceptable. It's evident that the kitchen took significant shortcuts with their preparation methods. To my surprise, the potatoes in the curry were undercooked and the size of two large kiwis. We ordered the yellow curry (pretty mid in flavor and their white rice was mushy), Thai fried rice with chicken (extremely dry), and drunken noodle (poorly executed, lacked the usual flavor notes you would expect eating real drunken noodles). I think the food was good overall. I tried the tom yum soup and got the special curry. But I took a point off for the meat that was in the curry. Over cooked. The chicken fell apart while eating, like crumbled apart. I guess it's one way to eat chicken, but I don't know. I would take another approach if I was to cook the same thing. When I cook curry, I cook the meat independently, mix with curry and leave it in the fridge overnight to let the flavor mix well to avoid overcooking. Honestly, I was massively creeped when I noted that the restaurant was in a 7/11 type store. In any case, looks can be deceiving, because this was some of the most authentic Thai food I've ever tasted. The food was made fresh, and for all these rains we were having in San Diego at the time, the soup hit the spot! The seating is limited, and the menu is not extremely extensive, but I think that's why this place really works. They're great at what they do. It may be simple to the naked eye, but the nuances of the dishes - the freshness of the vegetables (man, that broccoli was the best I've had), the perfectly cooked chicken, the perfectly spiced food - the rating really earns itself! Food: I've ordered lots of items from here and all of it is delicious. More of a matter of preference. On this visit, I tried a newer item: their friend chicken appetizer. The chicken is fresh, crispy, and has a unique flavor. The dressing it comes with works well to cut through some of the heaviness of fried chicken. Definitely worth sharing, the portion is generous. It's sort of hipstery Thai food served out of the back of a liquor store in Golden Hill. What's not to like? Big fan of the Tom Kha noodles. I've gone to several different 55 Thai locations many times and have finally accepted the fact that the food is just alright. Nothing more, nothing less. I typically get the drunken noodles with fried tofu made vegan (no fish sauce). Unfortunately, I'm fairly certain they just withhold the fish sauce, rather than subbing in vegan fish sauce. This leads to drunken noodles that are disappointingly bland... Today I got the pad see ew made vegan in hopes that I could find a new menu item that I like. There was definitely more flavor than the drunken noodles (likely due to the garlic), but they were still just bland and there were none of the veggies found in the drunken noodles. The noodles were also dry and all stuck together in blobs which made eating it difficult. Best part of 55 Thai is the convenience and cheap prices. If I for some reason can't hit up my usual Thai spots, I'll get 55 Thai in a pinch. I'm just prepared to not be wowed... read more
