Can an unpretentious neighborhood restaurant in Pawtucket really be worthy of a 5-star review? In the case of 579 Benefit Street, absolutely! This used to be the Checker Club, a classic old-school fine dining restaurant that had gotten a bit shabby in its latter years. The renovation/transformation is astounding. The interior is beautiful & immaculate. My dining companion & I went for Restaurant Week, when they offered a 3-course meal (appetizer, entree or pasta & dessert) for $29.95. I've been to many different places for previous Restaurant Weeks & find that usually there aren't an abundance of choices and/or the servings are a bit smaller than usual. Not the case here! The choices are plentiful & the servings are full-sized. I chose the Clams Casino (3) for my appetizer, which were tasty but a bit dry. They definitely would have benefited from a little more butter in the crumb topping, but a squeeze of lemon made them quite delectable. My entree was 1/2 rack of BBQ Baby Back Ribs. Fall-off-the-bone tender with a nice char, there was the perfect amount of heat & sweet in the sauce. The coleslaw was fine & the sweet potato fries were probably the best I've ever had. Super creamy interior with just a hint of exterior crunch & lightly seasoned... yum! And there were plenty of leftovers to bring home. The absolute best part of the meal, though, was dessert. An Espresso Martini was one of their offerings. Full-size & full-strength, I'd expect to pay $15-$18 elsewhere for this drink alone. Delicious & the perfect ending to our excellent meal. Our server was pleasant & attentive. The real rock star, though, was the Manager, Brett. Such fun watching him work the room, comping small glasses of bubbly to the 4-top next to us as someone was celebrating a birthday, snapping photos & cooing at infants. He stopped to chat at each table, something I really appreciate. 579 has many weekly specials including buck-a-shuck, 50¢ wings, half priced apps & the like. It is Providence restaurant week and on this occasion we decided to go with our daughter to a new place where we had not previously been. The restaurant was a bit out of our way but their prefix menu looked good and was well priced for dinner at $30 per head. The place itself was very uninspiring and we entered somewhat with trepidation. The bar area was reasonably full but we opted for the dining area which was much quieter. It was also bland unappealing. Anyway we ordered beers and a Prosecco and studied the menu offerings. For starters we had the 4 shrimp cocktail, the 2 mini tacos and I had the 3 Zippy shrimp - all of which were delicious. The main courses were two of the peachy salmon and with some trepidation the 7oz sirloin steak and we were all pleasantly surprised as to how good they all were. We ended the meal with two mini lava chocolate cakes and the cheesecake. Again, they were very good. With everything the check came to $137, (reasonable for the quality of the meal) for three not including the tip. The young server seemed inexperienced but amicable. The restaurant deserves 4**** for the food but only 2** stars for the decor and ambience. I've dined here many times and have generally enjoyed the food, which is why this experience was so disappointing. I ordered the Chicken Francaise, described as "flour breaded, egg-dipped, sautéed chicken cutlets with a lemon-butter and white wine sauce, served with jasmine rice and greens." Unfortunately, the dish delivered bore little resemblance to that description. The "greens" appeared to be little more than a handful of bagged grocery store salad mix dumped onto the plate, complete with brown, wilted lettuce. It was unappetizing to look at and ultimately inedible. The chicken itself was bland and flavorless. Rather than the bright, balanced lemon flavor that Chicken Francaise is known for, the overwhelming taste was simply butter. The sauce lacked the smooth, velvety texture traditionally associated with a good francaise sauce and seemed hastily prepared. The jasmine rice was equally disappointing. It had none of the fragrant, floral qualities that distinguish jasmine rice from ordinary white rice. It tasted like plain boiled rice with no seasoning or character. At nearly $24, I expected a much higher-quality meal. This was, without question, the worst dish I've had here and felt like a complete miss from the kitchen. The one bright spot of the evening was the cocktail. I ordered the Pear Flower Martini, and it was absolutely excellent--perfectly balanced, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The bar program continues to impress and was easily the highlight of the meal. One additional disappointment was learning that the restaurant adds a 3% surcharge for credit card payments. While I understand businesses have the right to offset processing costs, this was not pointed out when the check was presented. I only learned about it because I specifically asked. I was told the charge is removed if you pay with cash or a debit card. Transparency matters, and this should be clearly disclosed when guests receive their bill rather than requiring them to notice and question it themselves. I hope this was simply an off night because the quality of this meal was nowhere near what I've come to expect from this restaurant. read more

I've never been to 579 but was invited on Easter Sunday so I figured I would meet friends first a drink. They had a buffet for around $30 which included food and pastries the options looked really good. I had a white sangria which was good. They have a bar area and tables near the bar along with a whole other section. The bartender was pleasant, you can tell he gets his regulars. They have karaoke on Friday nights and on Wednesdays music trivia bingo night. Multiple TV's. I parked in the front street parking so I can't remember if they have a parking lots. Went here yesterday before a kids baseball game at Slater. VERY pleasantly surprised at EVERYTHING! My wife had a Detroit style pizza and I had Steak and sweet tater fries. My wife is a pizza addict and she said the pizza was No1 on her pizza list. She said they got everything right - the sauce, the cheese and the dough. My meal was well balanced (Steak, tater fries, and veg). This was one of the few times that my food was enough to fill me up but not the usual disgusting American too much food plate - and thats good in my books. Service was friendly and efficient. We will definitely go back soon. The place was nice and chic as stated by another reviewer - I assume it was the owner, who walked round and straightened chairs after folks had left - small details like this get noticed. If you haven't been here in a while-It's time to go again-we have been there in the past and the manager was so unpleasant we haven't gone in quite a while. We decided to go again. I don't know if there is a new manager (still under the same group as before (Castiglioni) or they gave the old manager a talking to but the atmosphere was so much more pleasant and welcoming The food was excellent and a great bargain for restaurant week. 4 good size shrimp for shrimp cocktail, 6 good size baked stuffed shrimp, and lava cake for dessert. Hubby got the salad(chocked full of stuff besides just greens) the baked stuff shrimp and a martini for dessert. The baked stuff shrimp has a little bit to much lemon for me but hubby thought it was just right(different tastes) The waitress was very attentive. I came on a Friday night and surprisingly it was not that busy which worked in my favor. The staff was pretty nice. Based off of the website, I was expecting something a little nicer, but still no real complaint. The pizza was really nice and crispy and the Thai calamari was nice and not too sweet. If you're from Pawtucket you know this is the old Checker Club! Inside is remarkably different. It's modern and chic. Doesn't remind at all of what it used to be. This is a great place to have a dinner date, drinks with the ladies or a little get together. A lot of options on the menu and I thought the prices were decent/comparable. (Although I do wish a salad came with the meals like chicken parm for $19.99.) Free rolls and butter (but I have to say I did comment to my husband they were really hard and not a lot of soft bread inside.) My vanilla white Russian was heavy handed (some say yay to this and some say nay so you choose if this is a positive or a negative.) The kids mac and cheese was a large portion (yay.) My side salad wasn't really side- large portion. The blue cheese was ok. Not my favorite but not the worst. The buff-a-que wings were very meaty (yay) and the sauce was good. The Detroit style pizza had very crispy edges (loved) but I wish they were a little more heavy handed with the sauce. Our waitress as a total Pawtucket gem. An older woman, who shared stories about her grandchildren with as as we had our 2 year old with us. Super nice, sweet and funny. We made reservations for six on a Saturday night. When we arrived, the original hostess tried to seat us in a booth that was far too small for our group. Fortunately, the manager stepped in right away and was able to quickly resolve the issue and move us to a more appropriate table, great customer service right off the bat. Our waitress came over promptly and was fantastic, friendly, attentive, and on top of everything. The drinks were well made, and all of our food arrived quickly and tasted great. I'm giving it a 2 because the server deserved a star, she was apologetic and an excellent server---but what went on behind the scenes-I have no idea. We ordered 12 oysters for an appetizer. They came about 15 minutes after we were served our main dish. One of the main dishes was salmon that had to be sent back because it was overcooked and tasted terrible. Went there for a rehearsal dinner as they accommodate large parties. The accommodations were spacious enough, and they took care of us well, if the service was a little slow. The food was decent. A fair amount of it was overcooked though; the Detroit style pizza is supposed to be *slightly* burnt at the edges, mine was kind of burnt to a crisp. It was still edible, but needed doctoring with ranch dressing, Bbq nachos were great! Similarly a little overcooked as the cheese kind of hardened into a shell when it cooled off a bit, but they were tasty. Drinks weren't bad. Overall not bad. I think they could step their game up in the kitchen, as the ideas on the menu seem delicious, but maybe just need a little better execution. My daughters and I stopped in here after a soccer game. Anthony was the best server! He was attentive, gave really helpful recommendations and was so fun! The food was great, we had the nachos with BBQ chicken and the spicy sour cream. It's not that spicy, so worked for all of us! I had the meatloaf which was moist and flavorful paired with mashed potatoes, crispy onions and portobello sauce, YUM! My daughters had rigatoni and meat sauce, and one of the burgers, both were great. The girls also tried the amazing fried oreos and creme brule. Ordered take out from here. I ordered a Caesar salad with grilled chicken. What I got was a take out box of lettuce. And a few slices of grilled chicken. The chicken was rubbery and most likely previously frozen. My husband got the filet and his meal looked decent. But I would not suggest ordering a salad from here. Disappointing. read more

We went for the oyster and clams buck a shuck, $1.00 cold shrimp and other Happy Hour specials (4p - 6 p). We were seated at a booth in the bar and they promptly took our drink orders. There is no Happy Hour with alcohol, but they had a full bar and wine and beer. There is a pretty big Happy Hour menu in addition to the oysters and shrimp. There are 5 types of personal pizzas, and 12 Happy Hour appetizers. Oysters were fresh and cold, had a nice flavor and we got a dozen of each oyster, (they usually have 2 types from 2 locations). The shrimp was cold and peeled, but small and tasted like nothing. Not worth a $1.00. Get more oysters or clams! 1) KOREAN BBQ GLAZED RIBS $8.00 served over a sesame-ginger slaw, with wasabi micro greens They were pretty good. Had a nice flavor but was a little too dry. Not enough glaze on the ribs. 2) FRIED CALAMARI $7.00 - tossed with lemon, garlic, butter and hot peppers. With balsamic glaze garnish and a side of marinara. This was good, a mix of lightly fried heads and bodies. Love the hot peppers and it was a good choice. 3) CLAMS PORTUGUESE $9.50 littlenecks simmered in a tomato-clam broth with onion, garlic & chouriço, over crostini. I was a bit disappointed because there was WAY to much chorizo so the balance of flavor was off. The clams themselves were fresh and steamed, but I didn't care for the sauce. 4) PIZZA RUSTICO $9.00 - pepperoni, red onion, sautéed mushrooms, Pomodoro sauce and scallions Good small pizza - hot, good sauce, fresh mushrooms and the pepperoni was spicy. Last Thursday, I took a client here for dinner- he's a huge sea food fan, so we went for Thursday night buck a shuck oysters. He ate both his dozen and mine! I want to note that my client uses a wheelchair, and is largely non speaking- both of which make outings challenging. The restaurant was extremely accessible for him- no problems navigating and the staff were very accommodating. And they asked him questions, instead of me, which was huge. Staff stopped by frequently to check in, which was appreciated, and was quick to help when needed (extra napkins!). It was quiet, but not "dead"- we could hear each other easily and have conversations without yelling. The only bump in our evening was the parking lot- there are 2 handicapped spaces, but neither is set up for a wheelchair van; we did some finagling and made it work, but just a heads up for future visitors. My husband and I returned to 579 for the first time since it re-opened. The food was no where near the quality of the food in the past. Plain rice and what looked to be a bagged salad along with baked stuffed shrimp scampi and the shrimp were tiny. The generals cauliflower was good but the meatball salad was just meh. When we went to pay the bill we were told if we use a credit card we would be charged an extra 3% and were also told it was the credit card company charging it which is not true, the restaurant is charging the fee. Also, when my husband went to pay he was looking for where to add the tip, it automatically charged us 25%. Needless to say, We are extremely disappointed and won't be back. read more

I came here on a Friday evening with my family. The parking lot is small, so we parked down the block. It is a very residential area so there is street parking. We were worried that we would have to wait for a table because we didn't have a reservation, but we were still seated right away. I had the risotto with shrimp and scallops and it was delicious! The risotto was cooked perfectly and it was very flavorful. The shrimp and scallops tasted fresh too. It's a good portion and you will not be hungry after the meal. The restaurant was clean and had modern decor.. The chicken wing appetizer was delicious, made perfectly. Casandra ordered the chicken Parmesan plate, she said it was the best chicken parm she's ever eaten... I enjoyed a nice meal at this spot tucked away in Pawtucket. The exterior of this eatery is deceiving as it looks a little divey on the exterior but once inside the interior is sprawling across a double dining area and lounge. The decor is clean and neat but lacks a discernible vibe. It reminds me of a mid level eatery - vinyl covered seating, carpeted floors, generic wall prints and somewhat bright lighting... like a family restaurant. However, the menu offers upscale items (And high mid prices @20-35 / entree). I feel like they need to work on the lighting... or something. The food was excellent. We scored by stopping in early and I enjoyed some buck a shuck oysters. A daily deal every night before six and all night on Thursdays. The oysters were tasty! I had a nice plate of risotto topped with grilled shrimp and sea scallops. The seafood was delightful but two out of the four scallops were just pieces of a whole scallop. A little disappointing but the lemony thyme laced risotto was firm yet creamy. My dining partner had the filet mignon which was fork tender and perfectly medium cooked, per her request. I don't know that I would make a special trip here since it's a half hour drive from home for me and lots of the other great eats are in between. But I definitely think it's a solid choice if you're in the area. read more

The Chef really knows what he is doing, too bad the service is so poor. I got there and I was told that my server would be right with us she is very busy, there were 2 tables sitting including ours. Menu's were brought out, but never retrieved, at one point the busser brought food and placed it atop menus that were sitting in front of me instead of removing them. It was a birthday celebration so a candle was added to one of the desserts, however one of the desserts did not come out with the others, making the candle and celebration weak.
