Great breakfast items like the omelette and parfait with fruit cup - also lumping in the nearby pantry because I can't find an entry for it, which serves a mean shrimp po boy sandwich. The restaurant also has excellent beverages like hot chocolate, orange juice and apple juice. If I had to pay for the breakfast buffet, I dont' know if it would be worth it, but for free as part of Marriott elite status, it was excellent! The breakfast buffet includes a full omelette bar along with warm entrees like pancakes, sausage, bacon and eggs. There is a bagel and toast section with smoked salmon and toppings along with lots of fresh fruit and cereal. Definitely enough to make for a hearty meal. The food is good. I wouldn't say that anything was outstanding, but it got the job done. Given how rich the food culture is in NOLA, I'd suggest venturing out of the hotel, but it's great to have close options when you want to stay near your room. read more

After being in New Orleans for 3 days, this was the best and most reasonable meal we've had. The prices were comparable or lower than other restaurants we've visited and the taste of the food was far better while we enjoyed the atmosphere and attentiveness of the waiter. I was going to eat at Thai restaurant. However, after the rude interaction I had when entering the restaurant with (what I assume to be the host), I only stayed a very short while & left. She was so rude & didn't answer questions. She seemed so bothered to have someone come into the restaurant t. There are far too many options for food to deal with such rudeness. This place is off the lobby of the New Orleans Marriott on Canal Street. The atmosphere and decorations are good and it's service is quick. Located inside the New Orleans Marriott, the 5 Fifty 5 restaurant obviously got its name from its address - 555 Canal Street. Now just FYI, I'm never a big fan of hotel bars. I don't make it a point to go the hotel bar when I'm in town, or even when I travel because anything that's located inside a hotel is normally way overpriced. Unless there's some kind of incentive for me to go, I avoid them. If you read my review for the New Orleans Marriott, then you'll know that during my check in, we were presented with a couple of vouchers. One is for $50 drink/food credit and another for $120 breakfast buffet credit for six people. I made sure that we made good use of both vouchers. The first time around, me and my friends came here on a Saturday afternoon for some drinks and light bites. Our waitress, Audrey, was a delight. The drinks were not shabby either and are deceitful. The very cherry martini tasted sweet just like cherry, but it had a strong punch to it. After just the one drink I could already started feeling the buzz. And people who know me know that I could handle my liquor pretty well. Yes, I get the Asian flush, but no I don't get drunk after one drink. The second time around, we came for the breakfast buffet. We presented our voucher to the hostess and got seated. The breakfast buffet will get you fresh fruits, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, pastries, grit, oatmeal, and various yogurt. There's also an omelette station where you can also order some pancakes and its more muscular version - pancakes with abs (or better known as waffles). By the way, this buffet normally costs $19 and (I think) will come with orange juice and coffee since we got some without any additional charges. Can't really mess up eggs, sausages, and bacon. I did order the pancake which took aw while. I ordered a short stack (expecting at least three pancakes) but only received ONE. Seriously? Just one pancake? Come on, Marriott. You can do better than that!! They sprinkled some powdered sugar on the pancake and provide you with syrup and butter. Tasted pretty good, but would have been better if they had given me the short stack that I asked for. This place was also pretty good for people watching. Lots of beautiful people came across the hotel lobby and/or lining up at the Starbucks nearby. Our server for the buffet was also delightful so it's fair to say the service here is pretty consistent. If I lived in NOLA, I think this place would be a good place to pre-drink for a little bit (due to the high price of the drinks) before hitting other bars in the area. And oh yeah, there's also free WiFI all over the Marriott Lobby area so you get free WiFi in here as well. And no, you don't have to be a guest to use the free WiFi. 5 STARS + From the moment we walked in Jairen the hostess made us feel at home. We had 9 ladies (think herding cats?) wanting a bloody mary before we took off for a swamp tour! Boy did we hit the jackpot! Miss Jewel = simply amazing!! For all but 2 of us, we have never been to NOLA. She gave us the local perspective with lots of great hints! 5 stars to 5 fifty 5! This was a spot I wouldn't have chosen but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience from the specialty drinks to the pizza. I generally don't order pizzas when dining out but I can't deny a margherita pizza! A margherita pizza is an oven- baked flat bread topped with tomato sauce and cheese. 5 fifty 5's was baked just how I love with crustable crust and cheesy cheese. The burger was also a winner along with the "world famous" seafood gumbo that included crabmeat. The ambiance is enjoyable as well with flat screen TV's and guests rushing to their high rise rooms for Relaxing. Our waitress was very pleasant and hospitable. Many New Orleans restaurants are closed on Christmas Day, so we did a little research to see what would be open, and liked the look of the buffet that 5 Fifty 5 was offering. I cannot comment on the regular menu, as I've only dined here for this one meal on this one holiday. The space itself is the usual vast Marriott dining room, with little charm or coziness, so I would not choose this place for ambiance, and I would probably skip it on any other day, as there are so many great options within walking distance. However, the spread on Christmas was very good, and I would do it again. The Christmas Day buffet included mimosas or champagne, and our waitress refilled these whenever they were less than half full. There were both roast beef and ham carving stations, featuring Niman Ranch ham with a Creole mustard glaze, and lovely popovers with the roast beast. The hot buffet included Abita Amber cheddar and broccoli soup, lamb chops with polenta, speckled trout, duck breast with mashed parsnips, charbroiled oysters with garlic butter, a chicken & andouille benedict, cheese blintzes with satsuma and strawberry compote, and sides of collard greens and whipped sweet potatoes. The cold side had an antipasto salad, tortellini salad, two different green salads, raw oysters, peel n eat shrimp, blue crab claws, smoked salmon with the usual sides and fresh fruit, plus a lovely cheese board with sliced meats and olives. There were muffins, scones, danish, croissants and brioche, and one of the nicest dessert stations I've ever seen. I won't even try to explain all that was on it, as It was huge, but everything I tried, and I tried much, was very good. The pastry chefs who made these delicacies were on hand to instruct and assist. Christmas Day is reservation only and done in 3 seatings starting at 11:30, so don't expect to walk in and get a table, even if you are a guest at the Marriott. I hope they do this again next year. I almost never try the restaurants in the hotel since they tend to be over priced and not of great quality. This place proved me wrong. We ordered the truffle tots, hummus and margarita pizza. All were great and prices were not bad.. $8,$8 and $14 respectively. Service was slow and not the best, didn't bring mud napkins, plates, condiments etc. we finally got it all but it took her about 30 min and multiple trips. A few family members kept raving about the Gumbo served here so we decided to stop in to have lunch/a quick bite before hitting the street of New Orleans for the first time. I feel like 5 Fifty 5 occupies an awkward place in the New Orleans food world. It's trying to be the obligatory, ubiquitous hotel restaurant installed to boost the rating of the connected hotel while appealing to local foodies with a more adventurous menu. Should they focus on the tourist appetite and have a fully homogenized menu of burgers, chicken, and standard Applebee's style fare? Should they continue with the NOLA-inspired seafood and remixed Creole? Or should they just give up completely and let a P.F. Chang's move into the space? The ladywife and I picked 5 Fifty 5 for our Valentine's lunch, hoping to beat the crowds by doing both lunch and Canal Street. (The tactic worked beautifully. I highly recommend the V-day lunch.) We weren't overly impressed with the service or the space. The food was average to decent, but it didn't wow on the plate like it did on the menu. Let's unpack the space first: This is a hotel restaurant, in a hotel lobby. It looks like any other open-plan Marriott lobby, anywhere in the world. The actual eating space is tucked back in the far corner, but the hostess stand is halfway across the lobby. Well. That's interesting. In terms of walls, there aren't any. The constant flow of guests through the lobby breaks up the romantic nature of any meal, which...hrmph. Marriott hasn't figured out if this is a hotel amenity or a restaurant. That attitude is very clear. The service was traditional, lack-luster space-cadet style service that under-trained, overworked, utterly uninvested servers typically give. Even though we ate lunch at 11:30 (which is a bit early, I know) the breakfast servers were still hanging around, doing nothing. The lunch servers were trying to reset the space for lunch with no assistance from the breakfast folks. My wife's food allergy slid off our server's metaphorical plate several times, even though we were the only table she had. We had to send several dishes back because of this memory lapse. Any dish we modified when we ordered got sent back to the kitchen to be remade, not altered. (I did raise a stink. Food allergies are not joking matters! You can't just scrape the shrimp off the plate and send it back, okay? Please do it right. No one wants to die because your kitchen was lazy.) When we were there, the menu struck me as ambitious for a white-bread crowd. Is the menu as interesting or creative as a typical New Orleans restaurant? No. For a hotel restaurant, I think it's pushing the envelope, though. I know 5 Fifty 5 wants to be something other than a generic place, but they are catering to a certain type of traveler. That's a fact of being in a Priceline-friendly hotel. As long as their main cliental wants TGI Friday's fare instead of NOLA fare, that's what will make the money for 5 Fifty 5...and that's what will keep me away. I stayed at the Marriott and saw this restaurant many times entering and leaving our hotel and had no interest in trying it after checking it out on Yelp. It is always empty which is a sign that there's something goin on there. And I was right. Plus, two yelp reviews?! We ended up coming here with a group of friends that wanted to eat here - so in a way I was forced. When we got seated, I had to ask the hostess how long this place had been opened and she said three years. Three years? And only two Yelp reviews? Yikes. I thought she was going to say, "We just opened last month." The restaurant is nice and has nice ambiance, but the positives stop there. After we ordered, it took nearly 40 minutes for the food to arrive, and the thing is, we were only one of four tables there! I got the bacon wrapped scallops with mango salsa which was pretty good. But one of our friends ordered prime rib and medium rare and it arrived well done. In addition, our other friends baked potatoes arrived to the table cold. So the waitress ended up comp-ing everyone's desserts so I got the chocolate soufflé, which was pretty good. The waitress definitely made up for all the negatives of the night, but I'ill never return again. I should have known, I SHOULD have known. There were many signs, oh so many signs. No Yelp reviews, the now dated, trendy, Las Vegas style design, bonus points on Opentable.com, located off the lobby in a cavernous restaurant space inside the Marriott hotel and few patrons. There are few positives to this dining experience, the service, while mostly friendly, was horribly unpolished and the restaurant itself was a mess, with scraps of food laying about on the seats and floors. We were drawn to the restaurant for the famed Wagyu beef debris with jicama slaw Po'boy, which I had read about, although it was no longer on the menu, I suspected that the Wagyu beef had spoiled for lack of customers, so they substituted shrimp ... it was a bun with fried shrimp. The lobster mac and cheese was also highly touted and while it was pleasant, the pasta was swimming in the cheese sauce. Overall, with so many delicious restaurants in New Orleans, I would pass on 5 Fifty 5 and have local cuisine that is not part of a large hotel chain. read more

When I came to NOLA a week or so ago for a convention I stayed in this Marriott and had one dinner there. I landed around 7pm, so when friends told me they were already planning on eating in my hotel I was thrilled. I just dumped my bag and headed down to the restaurant. Needless to say I was absolutely starving after traveling all day. So I guess we'll start with food. I got crab-encrusted redfish that I have to say was quite delicious. But again, could be a reflection of how hungry I was. The other meals around the table were pretty mediocre. My one friend got lobster mac and cheese that we were all drooling over on the menu and ended up coming out essentially tasteless...how can lobster mac n'cheese be tasteless! Another friend at dinner was pretty disappointed by her shrimp and grits. Two other people we were at dinner with got the cobb salad and they were both pretty happy with it. It was presented nicely and tasted pretty good. As for the service it was slim to none. The restaurant was empty and the people who got there first had to wait 20 mins before someone noticed that they wanted to be seated. I had a lunch special which consisted of a tiny salad and a little bown of gumbo. I loved the salad and would have enjoyed it even more if the portion was a bit bigger (for the price). The gumbo was okay but it was missing something. It actually had crawfish and shrimp in it but it tasted amatuer. I tried the red beans as well, and once again, it was tasty but not authentic. Soup: The corn chowder was presented on a white plate in a mini Staub pot with the type of generic crackers a chain restaurant would hand out. Why go to the trouble of attempting a nice service to then ruin it with cheap crackers in plastic. The soup was very thick and didn't have a lot of taste. My family and I were in New Orleans a month ago for our son's birthday. We selected 555 from the web (before I joined Yelp). We were extremely disappointed. First, we expected a classy setting. We got one step above a hotel coffee shop. Nice, but not warm or particulary comfortable. Next, we expected good food. My filet was good, but my wife's pasta was inedible. With a $30 meal certificate in hand, I was determined to max it out on the swankiest lunch possible. I got the red fish plate, and it was yummy! The restaurant was somewhat dead (Sunday afternoon, during Saints home game. No surprise) I requested for a class of iced coffee and my waitress went to the Starbucks next door and joked me up! (The city was temporarily under a water boil watch, so tap water was unavailable). The fish was perfectly grilled, tender, and melted in my mouth. Alas, After I devoured the fish, I got a creme brûlée to make my meal complete. And complete it was! If it wasn't for the gift certificate, I would have not gone here however. Our delightfully helpful waitress put an enticing basked of five different breads. My favorite was the flat bread We began with the "fried green tomatoes, crumbled goat cheese, crawfish poppers, bacon aioli $9"--perfect: tomatoes firm with well seasoned breading, the crawfish poppers were spicy as was the aioli, goat cheese crumbles a mild contrast. I had the special of "salad and gumbo for $13". Both were tasty but the gumbo was a little too thick with too much rice. The brined chicken on the top of the salad was pieces of boiled (I think.) chicken--no breading and no spices. I used some of the spicy aioli from above. My wife liked her crab crusted redfish, herb Jazzmen rice, lemon thyme vinaigrette $17. I was not impressed by the bite she shared with me. Her lemonade--two glasses-was complimentary. With a creme brulee and my glass of cabernet our bill was only $39, but my wife had a one-entree-free coupon and our waitress asked us if we were AARP members. We are and that saved us another $7. All things considered--waitress, ambiance, food, and discounts--it was a wonderful 4-star lovers' lunch. read more

Yowzers!! Is this place still in business?! How can I plead mighty Odin to strike down this New Orleans tragedy?? Look, let's get something straight....I'm all for stimulating local business, especially the New Orleans restaurant market. I've tried several times to give this place a chance and yet, it continues to teeter between 'not quite adequate' and 'downright deplorable'. The last time I dined in there, a wave of horrible past experiences came over me. Perhaps the gods were trying to communicate with me that something was amiss. I should have just asked the hostess kindly if this was the entryway into the first level of Dante's Inferno. Joking aside, here's how the last trip had gone down. I entered the burning ring of fire a.k.a. walkway into 5 Fifty 5 and the hostess seated us around the back of the restaurant in a dark corner, almost shutting us off from any other human contact. Realistically speaking, we were only the second dinner party in the place. I saw another couple sitting about 4 or 5 tables away. I glanced over and as the man drew his spoon to his mouth to sip his soup, his head chillingly turned in my direction, his eyes piercing me in a unnerving manner; his mouth curled upward into a grim smile as if he, too, knew what I was in for. Boy, I should have left at that very moment. We put in an order for drinks....mojitos, I believe they were. The drinks were very good. I will have to say that whoever the bartender was, they knew their craft. Over the course of our duration, we ordered a number of various drinks and they were all satisfying. That is the end of the 'happy' portion of this perilous tale, however. For starters, I ordered the fried calamari. I love a restaurant that showcases a great calamari dish. I had some great calamari at this joint on St. Charles Ave. in the CBD called 'The Cobalt' but alas, it fell victim to Katrina. It is now the home of John Besh's 'Restaurant Luke'. Anyway, after some time waiting, the calamari arrived....and what a frightening scene it was. In all cases of calamari I have ordered, you get little ringlets or something of that nature. In this experience, however, what I had were whole squid bodies, some that didn't even appear to be cooked the whole way through; their limbs stretching outward, as if reaching for help from the fryer below them. I had to look away. It was like peering at those ash casts of Pompeii victims during the volcanic blast of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Ugh!! Next, came the entrée and I was praying, fingers crossed under the table that my main course wouldn't arrive in such a terrifying fashion. I had ordered the halibut in a butter sauce with a bit of a what resembled cheese grits. First, the halibut was severely over cooked. I mean, there was literally a shell of burned meat around the fish so that had to be discarded. The butter was so IMMENSLEY over salted. Ever gone swimming at the beach and accidently taken a wave to the face when your mouth was open? Remember the puckering of salinity? That's how bad this sauce was. I couldn't eat anything that touched it....or even got within proximity. Everything else that came with my dish, strangely, was bland. Now, how can you absolutely torch a great cut of halibut and mix in seawater with your cream sauce but skip everything else? Was the salt content of the sauce supposed to make up for the lack of flavors in everything else or that they turned my halibut into beef jerky? As the late Macho Man Randy Savage used to cry out: "snap into a Slim Jim!" Now, on to my guest's meal: I'm not sure it's available on the menu anymore as I just checked the restaurant's website and the item is missing. In any case, they ordered the sea bass and a rice concoction of pineapple juice and some sort of cream sauce. The sea bass was also devoid of anything resembling flavor however, the side of rice pudding (??) was good. Now, I don't mind eating at a nice restaurant and spending money for good food. This was anything BUT good, though. THE best thing about our meal was the drinks and if I wanted that, I would have just stayed at the bar! The reason I decided on dining here was because the place was promoting like crazy, Gambit wrote up a glowing review about the courses available and the wizardry skills of the head chef. The Gambit columnist obviously didn't order what I ordered. I'll never forget that meal. It was ghastlier than 1,000 ghouls! This is a cautionary tale for the rest of you, folks!! we ate here twice. late night: had the caesar salad, and they added salmon for me (bIG piece of salmon, too). better than sex chocolate soufflet - OMIGAD! GET IT! breakfast buffet: eggs were made to order - delish FRESH FRUIT - amazing. strawberries were SO YUM. they even had LYCHEES! Ahh! I was in heaven! yeah, it's expensive. really expensive. but, for this trip, it was worth it. ask for Brian the server. he's great. he even sent up a refrigerator for us! read more

YUMMMMM, Got the seafood gumbo bowl and it was just what I expected in New Orleans, Yum. And they called it their award winning soup. I also got the po boy sandwich with shrimp & ousters. Last the waitress was outstanding and very pleaant. read more
