I used to go to the Nolita location on off hours occasionally. After my 1.5 year hiatus from nyc I learned there is a Gramercy location now. I desperately wanted a bowl of pho after racing NYC Half that day, and I knew I wanted to go to 5ive Spice. Since Gramercy location was closest to the race finish at Columbus Circle, I decided to head over. Mind you, there was an additional eight minute walk from the subway station, which was a lot right after a half marathon - I was quietly whined to no one while I made my way. When I'm here, I usually opt for the 5ive special, but I went for the classic beef this time because I wanted something lighter. The pho hit the spot just right - meat was tender, all the veggies were fresh, and most of all broth was so flavorful. It was heaven to my body craving salt after the race and so good that I didn't even think about adding Sirracha or lime midway to switch the flavor. Yeah I will love this restaurant forever. The flavors here are always on point and the service is consistently excellent. Pho is great in the winter and banh mi/vermicelli in the summer. Our favorites are the shaking beef, brisket, and short rib. We always get the fried spring rolls as an appetizer, which are amazing wrapped in lettuce with pickled vegetables and dipped in the fish sauce. We go to the Brooklyn location regularly since it's closer to where we live, but this one's still a noticeable step up. read more

They're definitely trying to go for a nightclub vibe based on the decor and all the instagram ads I get for their ticketed happy hour (?) events. I stopped by to try the banh mi a few times. It's fine, though it's hard to mess up this dish. I did think the David dip banh mi was a little bland because there's a thick slab of plain fried fish diluting most of the flavor. The dip didn't really do much to save this sandwich. They have different lunch, dinner, and take out menus. I was disappointed to see a lot of my favorites taken off the dinner menu. I've been to 5ive Spice before and returned for good reason- the food is delicious and reasonably priced, what's not to like? My friend and I got the summer rolls and brussel sprouts to share and then the braised short ribs and lemongrass chicken vermicelli bowls for our mains. The spring rolls were good with the peanut sauce but are quite standard ie hard to mess up. The braised short ribs were very good but I could've done without all the extra fat on the meat. I love the 5ive Spice franchise and was very excited to hear that they've opened up a third location out in midtown. We stopped by Saturday night after catching a movie at the nearby AMC. First of all, the Yelp check-in deal is an amazing one - you can get a whole app for free! We went with the Rooster Wings (normally $13) and they were delicious, fried to perfection. For mains, we got the bun bo hue ($19) and bubba bun ($15) - have to say both were very good but nothing mind blowing. Just very solid viet food! However we also shared a porkchop banh mi ($13) which was definitely disappointing - porkchop was dry, not enough sauce and the bread was hard, perhaps over toasted. The pickled carrots, which are usually my fave part of the sandwich, weren't as pickled as I like them to be. I feel like I've had a better banh mi at the OG location. I saw on ig that the menu here will become more elevated, so maybe my review will be irrelevant soon and there's going to be new things to look forward to. I came here on a Friday night and it was pretty empty so I would say it's definitely walk-in friendly. The menu is also pretty small so you're not bombarded with options. My friend and I tried to check in on Yelp to get a free appetizer, but when we asked the waiter she said the promotion has ended (could be applicable for lunch though). I would keep that in mind if you're trying to get dinner. For the appetizer we got spring rolls and they were pretty good. I also got the tacos and they were the best things on the menu. The sauce was so good and the tacos were quite filling. The food took so long to come out. After we got the appetizer, we waited another 40 minutes for the entree. However, they were kind enough to comp the appetizer since the wait was so long. Overall, giving this a 4/5 because the food was good but not good enough that it was mind blowing. I have been on the hunt for the best vegetarian / vegan pho in the city and I may have gotten close to it last night. I arrived pretty late after seeing a movie to dine alone and my first impressions were how modern and upbeat the restaurant was, and how cozy the booths looked. Even at 9:30-10, there were a number of full tables! The staff was super friendly and seated me right away. The first con: the 2000s/2010s pop music blasting detracts from the eating experience and this place would benefit from something more relaxing (or anything but "I Gotta Feelin" and "Low featuring T Pain") I was impressed by the servers and they took my order quickly, but not in any sort of rushing manner. I ordered the fresh rolls with shrimp to start and the veggie pho with extra soy protein. The fresh rolls came fairly fast and were deliciously flavorful and crunchy veg! I loved the texture of the shrimp. The sauce is a little thick for my liking but I added extra lime juice and it was perfect. The pho was paced to wait until after I was about halfway done with the app (and I'm a fairly slow eater) so it came out at a great time. I was shocked by the grandiose proportion -- and the value of the extra portion of protein was tremendous! The broth is deeply flavorful and lightly spicy (and I add lime and jalepeno for a bigger kick). And veggies are well cooked and abundant. And the protein, while I must admit I do prefer tofu, was great! I would prefer if the protein itself wasn't as seasoned since it's already a flavor bomb of a soup, but nonetheless it was great. Portion size and price: the prices are high here, but there is good value in the portions. I'd recommend splitting items because I took half of everything home. Essentially it felt like I paid $48 (with tax and tip) for two meals. Overall impression: delicious and unique pho, interesting menu with lots of other intriguing dish options like the tacos... I'll definitely be ordering takeout from here next (or if they change their music- dining in person). read more

5ive Spice has opened a new location on 3rd Avenue in Kips Bay, close to Baruch College and near Madison Square Park and Gramercy Park. This new space is perhaps the loveliest of their three locations: spacious, with a big full bar, lots of tables and booths, and some trademark 5ive Spice secrets. (Could that be a hidden restroom entrance? Push and see!) My girlfriend and I came in around 8 PM last Wednesday night, plopping down at the bar and ordering up a couple bowls of pho, plus a free order of egg rolls (thanks to Yelp for the check-in offer). We sipped bottles of ice cold lager and chatted with the bartender for a few minutes; our food arrived remarkably quickly. My 5ive Special pho, loaded up with all the meats, was delicious. The short rib here is divine; I highly recommend trying it if you've never had it before. In conjunction with the beef brisket, rare steak, and meatballs, there's no shortage of protein in this bowl. I'd be remiss not to mention the broth as well. Super tasty. Even when I started filling up, I made sure to drink every drop of broth. Next time I'll ask for extra cilantro and jalapeno, maybe ease up on the beans sprouts. Pho is highly customizable, but this baddie is perfection. The service was outstanding, we had a great first visit. I'm so happy to see 5ive Spice opening new locations, particularly since they get closer and closer to me each time! I came during happy hour and had the chicken and goat cheese apps and the guava margarita. All items were flavorful and appetizing. Menu is mainly Vietnamese and it was clear the restaurant has a following per the other patrons that were there. They also had 90's-2000 R&B and rap to which random servers and customers were singing and rapping to. *huge smile* The main server was friendly and informed me of an open bar that they did every Thursday this summer: $50 for 90 minutes w/passed hor d'oeuvres as well (to which I asked why they didn't do it on Fridays or Saturdays to compete with the other local businesses). We had a reservation, and the place was reasonably busy for a weekday night. We went with veggie dumplings to share and veggie pho for each of us. The veggie dumplings were mid at best-- the wrappers were too thick for my taste, which overpowered the filling and left it lacking flavor. After waiting another 30 minutes, they finally brought out our pho, but by then we were starving and visibly annoyed at how slow the service was. The waiters didn't seem to care much, and even though the place wasn't that busy, it felt like they were ignoring us. They also messed up our orders and kept forgetting things we asked for, like a to-go box and even a fork. The veggie pho was served generously but in a poorly chosen bowl--it was filled to the brim, making it impossible to add the bean sprouts, basil, or jalapeños they served on the side. Trying to mix everything was a messy struggle, with broth spilling over the sides. Despite the awkward serving, we managed to eat. The pho itself was okay, but I wished it had more spice or extra sauces on the side. I didn't bother asking, though, because of how bad the service was. The soy protein, surprisingly, was the standout--it was well-seasoned and paired nicely with the broth. The broth itself was decent, but when combined with the noodles and veggies, it fell a bit flat. I ended up eating only about a third of my meal and packed the rest to go. The packaging was pretty bad, though--by the time I got home, the broth had leaked out, and they didn't even bother packing the bean sprouts, basil, or jalapeños. Oddly enough, the restaurant itself was freezing, too--I couldn't take off my jacket, even though we were seated inside with the door closed. Maybe they should've turned off the AC! read more

If you've been to their Soho location, the lunch menu seems pretty similar! They offer a variety of banh mi's, pho and banh xeo tacos. Got the banh mi and loved the flavors! The most recent time, I went for dinner and was surprised that they had an entirely new dinner menu. My friend and I were looking for pho, and stumbled upon this restaurant through some Yelp searching. We decided to check it out since it was close. Ended up being the right decision for sure! We arrived fairly early compared to the usual dinner hours, so we sat down right away. Since it was so early, the bar wasn't set up fully, so we were unable to try the lychee martinis. A bit disappointing as those looked really good, but we decided on a glass of white wine and that did the trick. Our servers were incredibly attentive too. Kept coming over to make sure we had everything we needed, and refilled our water glasses any time they looked even a little bit low. We split the steamed chicken dumplings to begin. 10/10. For our main course, I ordered the lemongrass chicken pho and my friend ordered the short rib. When they came out, there was so much food!! For the price, this was worth it. The pho was delicious and we were absolutely stuffed by the time we left. The space is very cool. One of the bathrooms is hidden behind a "bookshelf," which was really fun. Came for dinner and had a nice meal, but I would recommend lunch instead as the lunch menu has way more options than the dinner menu (banh mi, vermicelli bowls etc). The inside feels like an upscale bar and is quite dark. The service is fast and friendly and our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu. We ordered the boneless short rib tacos (entree) and summer rolls with shrimp (appetizer) as starters. The tacos were very good and I would order them again (3 per order so unsure how that is big enough for an entree, but maybe if you aren't that hungry?). The summer rolls were good as was the peanut sauce they came with, similar to ones we have had elsewhere. For entrees we tried the 5ive special pho and bun bo hue. The meat in the special pho was great, very tender and flavorful (though we were not fans of the meatball due to its texture, almost rubbery). The best meat was the short rib, though the thinly sliced angus was superb too. I liked the thicker noodles of the bun bo hue, but overall the special pho was better (the pork patty in the bun bo hue was not my cup of tea in terms of texture/flavor).
