I stopped in 5ive Steak on a layover. The waitress, Anastasia, was super nice to me and very empathetic when I accidentally ripped my thumbnail off. She told me where I could find a manicurist at JFK, if I had time to sit for one. Instead, I spent my time drinking two Negronis, which were delicious. I ordered the little bleu beef sliders, which were the perfect snack before heading on a long flight to vacation. They were tasty and just the cutest size. I should try these more often. The cheese and bacon on top of these made them very flavorful. I think it's sort of funny that people order steak here when they can only get a plastic knife to cut it with! I would not be so daring to do so, I'd probably mis-judge and cut a finger off. All in all, it was a pleasant hour or so that I spent there. 4 stars because it was super expensive. My bill came to about $70, including a tip for Anastasia. Not a bad way to spend a layover, and what the hell, I'm on vacation. read more

If only I had read the reviews before eating here! 2 stars and that may be generous. The service is absolutely terrible. She did warn us food would take 20 minutes though they didnt appear busy and we only ordered salads.....but didnt even deliver on that timeframe. The salads...just small salads for close to $15 were ok but had some slimy lettuce. The other offerings were $$ and that would be ok if the food was decent and we werent handed plastic forks. Our server never came back and after another 30 minutes we had to find someone to bring the bill. Airport food... arrrgh I don't know why I do this to myself.. But when hunger strikes, it strikes real hard. I was utterly disappointed with 5ive Steak primarily due to their overpricing. It's pretty bad. Airport food has always been known to be pricey but this is just over the top. The food is not good at all. I ordered fish n chips thinking "how can one go wrong with deep frying?!?!?" Apparently they took it too far. The fish was actually still cold and I only noticed this once I got to the middle :-(( Thank goodness I have a great immune system! I ended up just sticking to the fries they were decent. Service was also poor. We were ignored by their greeter till she finished writing whatever she was writing for her to notice that we were still standing there. It's no secret that restaurants in airports usually offer overpriced and often crappy food, but this one takes the cake. I ordered BLT sandwich for... $25 (before tip), the sandwich came on cheap grilled-cheeze type bread with shriveled up lettuce, tiny half-strip of bacon, and a tiny chicken filet that was 1/3 of the size it would be in any other restaurant. To add insult to injury, the filet tasted like it came out of the microwave (probably cooked and frozen ahead of time). This garbage wouldn't be worth $5 anywhere else, let alone $25 + tip. read more

I had a great filet mignon steak here, it was served timely and the creme brûlée cheesecake. I ate at the bar and was very entertained by bartender Ken who was also super on top of things and made my 3 hour delay actually enjoyable . He deserves a raise, he made that restraint song with efficiency. Also, the regular customers I ran into were friendly and engaged in several good conversations. Food was good, steak cooked perfectly, crunchy crisp green beans and good potatoes. This seemed to be the only legit breakfast option in terminal 5. It wasn't bad but wasn't amazing. The food tasted okay but the salad that came with my omelet was legit just lettuce with a dressing. The lettuce didn't taste fresh or washed. But the omelet was great. The waiter was alright not that attentive though. Hard to get service that early in the morning I guess! read more

This is an airport restaurant so maybe they think they don't have to try too hard, I'm trying to find a reason for the lack of inspiration, or the just average taste of their offerings. I have been here a few times, so it is possible to get repeat business, and I'm sure it being JFK in addition to the regular burst of tourists that will never be back, there are people that shuffle through often for business. I've had burgers here which I've never been able to get served up medium rare, one time the server also was exasperated and after it going back twice offered to let me select something else, unfortunately I didn't have the time I never was so thankful for a bag of chips on a flight. Being in the been there done that camp, this time out I ordered one of those wedge salads, the wedge was small, the lettuce a bit warm and for the price the bacon lacking. In other words, it was okay. There are several other offerings in the Jet Blue terminal and I'll look to those in the future if I didn't have time to grab a bite before getting to the airport. Not saying that I'd never come back, the servers are friendly and attentive, I'm just recommending if you select 5ive Steak over the other places that you pick wisely or have a preference for medium to well done if going for a burger. read more

Frozen crinkle cut fries with gummy meat- the choice in cheese is yellow, white and chefs choice (if you want to call it blue cheese since the yellow and white cheese has blue green mixed in or mixed hardened cheese like it's been left out for a couple days then yup!) good luck on ensuring your order was taken correctly- because ours never even came! My son waited on his 5ive meats - which is actually just a hamburger - really sad day. I've been here twice and both times it's been good. But I actually planned my trips with this place in mind. For the people that rated it so low I have a theory. If you're here because your flight got delayed or cancelled it's going to be tough to enjoy the meal no matter what. Service was fast and attentive both times. It wasn't packed but also wasn't empty. The steaks and burgers I tried were good. The steak was better and the only reason I got the burger was because I wanted to try LaFrieda meat. But to tell you the truth the meat isn't that amazing. It's a great burger and cooked to medium rare perfectly. But I was expecting a much more tender and flavorful patty. The truffle fries are really good though and I only got a few thick stalks with my truffle burger. Highly recommend getting it as a side. The prices are also very reasonable. I think a burger is $13 to $18 and the steaks are low 20's. Only bad thing is the price of beer. I think it was $9 for a Magic Hat #9. But I guess that's standard airport price for booze. read more

In order to dine at 5ive steak, you must be elite, you must be the crem de la crem; OR, you just have to fly Jet Blue @ JFK. This chiq urban steakhouse has an inspiring menu... until you see the prices. Good spot though, with interesting choices for quality burgers and great truffled fries when in the mood for something a step or two above "airport food." A perfectly adequate middle-of-the-road beef barn that really dabbles more in the apps and burger space than actual cuts of steak. Sure, you'd find them on the menu, but do even the layover elite choose to fine dine beside an interactive model of a jet engine, sipping poorly made Manhattans whilst hacking their filets with transparent flatware? Methinks not. She ordered a perfectly adequate bacon cheeseburger, and I, the sloppy, umami-rich ribeye sandwich (promised cooked to order, slice and stacked; served in one hunk) which oozed flavor, along with all of its innards. The ciabatta didn't stand a cohesive chance. The much lauded truffle fries proved to be their regular ol' fries with a bath of truffled oil and a heavy hand of parmesan. How so? She ordered them to side her burger, and when regular fries came, the server apologized, disappeard for 15 seconds, and returned with an identical plate... boasting a heap of truffle fries, where their previous iteration sat unmoved. Normally, I wouldn't mind, but the actually truffle flavor was muted, and all we got was extra salt from the cheese, and pungency from the chives. Cool. I'm still baffled how two sandwiches, one cocktail and two glasses of wines eclipsed the $100 mark, but they did. Maybe it's the generous grape juice pours (which they cleverly call "a glass and a half") or maybe it's the expected JFK tax, but to overcharge on a mediocre meal because, hey Joe Traveler, you kind of have to, just rubs grated Parm in the plastic knife wound. 2.5 stars. read more

As cliche as it sounds, one must normalize expectations when dining in a place like JFK. With that said, I've been hitting this "steak joint" up many times during business travel because it's consistent enough, never that crowded (for a number of reasons), and I think their steaks receive a passing grade. Think about a thawed USDA Choice cut from your local chain grocery store cooked by someone who has a clue. Eating a decent slab-o-beef with a plastic knife takes a little getting used to, but these are all #firstworldproblems. And yes, yes, not the best value at over $100 a head for a basic NY Strip, drinks, and appetizers - but again, you have to remember where this is, your other options, and how often you need to foot the bill. read more

After getting through security at JFK airport, I was famished and looking for good food. I know not to expect a high-quality experience at an airport, but I've also had decent food at food joints before catching a flight. I spotted this place, as it was sitting at the center of the terminal. I had reservations about coming here, as this place had low ratings. But I decided to bite the bullet and give this place a shot. I regretted doing that. I was seated after waiting around for a while. I ordered a cappuccino and the filet mignon plate. I asked them not to put bacon on the filet mignon, as I don't eat pork. I also asked them to make it seared. They said that's fine, and brought me my coffee shortly afterward. The coffee was pretty bad, it was definitely not a good cappuccino. I added some sugar, and it was still bad. But I was in dire need of caffeine at the time, and I was already sitting down, so I was hoping the food would make up for it. Nope. The filet mignon was brought out, and it had bacon on it. I explained to the waiter that they messed up, and I sent it back. When the waiter came back with the new plate, they made it well-done instead of seared. That was it, I left after the waiter said they won't charge me for messing up my order. I still left him a tip though. This was all on top of the food being overpriced, which is something I don't typically complain about when ordering filet mignon. But when the staff here consistently messes up my order, and their idea of a steak knife is a plastic knife, no one should be paying to eat here. I never give out 1 stars, but this place did everything in it's power to drag it out of me. Let's start with the food. There was a mix up on my order, but that aside you are not going to get what you think you're ordering. What do I mean? I ordered a run of the mill egg breakfast, I was under the impression that there was going to be toast included and there wasn't. The potatoes were cold. The eggs tasted like they were powered. Yuck. As to the food mix-up, that was partially my fault. I should have said something when she set down the dish and it wasn't correct. I didn't because I don't like to make a fuss and I needed to eat and get to my place. (Yes, this is in an airport terminal). Unfortunately, halfway as I scarf it down, the waitress appears with my dish and they couple next to me didn't get to eat. It was an awful situation. Lastly, staff. At that time we witnessed two servers arguing about who would take our table. We couldn't hear them but their body language and facial expressions were telling. One repeatedly shook his head no.
