I brought my car in to have a check engine light diagnosed, they initially quoted me around $200 just for the diagnosis (I had already had a code run at Autozone and knew what needed done). A little steep in my opinion. Afterwards, I had to call to get a breakdown of the estimate for what it would cost to repair my car and they quoted me $550. They wanted $178 to replace the PCV valve (which did not need it, and is only a $9 part, I can do that myself). Overall I found their prices high, and their communication not the best as I had to call to get an itemized breakdown of what I was paying, it was not offered prior to them starting repairs. Although I will not return, I have nothing but nice things to say about Caleb at the desk! He was very helpful and professional when I told them I did not want to continue service. 5 stars for Caleb, 3 for the shop. read more

We lived in Broomfield many years ago. 5th Gear was a fairly new business then. After the first time taking our Subaru to "Andy" for repairs, we never went anywhere else. They were honest, did a great job and were reasonably priced, we never went anywhere else. Now these many years later, my granddaughter has a Jeep, that is causing her problems, starting for a few weeks, then not starting. Not the most honest garage I've been too. Took my wife's car in to get a check engine light diagnosed that cost $220 without even fixing anything, then tried running me for $2700 for a job that the next two places quoted at about $300. Do your research and get a quote from a few other spots unless you wanna get taken for a ride. read more

First off, I paid for a rack and pinion to be replaced upon an alignment issue i didn't want to deal with while in college. They replaced it the rack which is fine but told them i wanted front end kit done and the rack, they didn't fix the issue at hand and how do you miss the outer tie rod bolt thread damages. So i paid thousands of dollars for a $35 outer tie rod to be the issue. No trouble shooting experience and all about just replacing. great with the pictures being texted to you with a unneeded explainations to intise the buyer to buy more but being out of aviation school and i'll replace my own parts. Don't waste your money without being brough in and shown the problem rather than texted about stuff that will need to be done in time. aside from the dealership quoted me less money to do the same shit. read more

If you actually care about your vehicle I would suggest avoiding this place. I took my truck in here for diesel emissions it didn't pass (which isn't there fault I understand that) but when you ask for a retest they want to recharge you another $60. Lastly in a matter of 30 minutes they managed to drive over a curb in my truck (luckily they only got the tire) and left the door handles covered in oil stains. Short version: this place is a rip off. Long version: I usually go to another mechanic for everything. Been going there for years and they are absolutely honest and do great work. I actually had my truck in there at the beginning of December for much needed brake work. While they were doing this, they noticed that the right rear wheel bearing needed to be replaced pretty badly, so they did it ($644). Once that was done, and the noise from the right rear bearing subsided, they noticed that the front left wheel bearing was making noise as well. I asked them to do it but unfortunately it was end of day and they are a very booked out shop and couldn't fit me in until Dec 27th. For the next week, I could feel and hear the front left bearing getting worse, especially after a trip up to the mountains. I called my usual shop and asked if there was any way I could get in there sooner and they said they were still booked out. They recommended I avoid highway speeds until the 27th. Unfortunately, I had a couple more trips to the mountains planned, so I hesitantly looked for someone else to do it sooner and called 5th gear since they've done oil changes for me in the past. Big mistake! I called them up and asked them how much a front left wheel bearing replacement on a 2015 Tacoma would be. The answer was that they don't give rough estimates over the phone, and that I should just bring it in and they'd take a look. Big mistake! At the end of the day, I got a text with a link to all of their findings. "Front right wheel bearing should be replaced. And front left wheel bearing should probably be replaced. $2,392, plus another $122 for realignment." I said no thanks. But I did get to pay $223 for their diagnosis. All I needed to know what how much they'd charge for a single wheel bearing replacement. They should have just said "assuming no other issues or hurdles, $1,200," but they insisted that they look at it so they could charge me $223 for looking at it. I asked the guy if I did get the work done (which I had zero intention of doing), is the $223 deducted from the charge? He said no, the diagnosis charge was separate. I told him that when I called, I already knew I needed a wheel bearing replaced and all I wanted to know what how much they charged. He said that it's their policy to not give quotes over the phone in case 'other stuff comes up.' In the 25+ years that I've been taking cars to mechanics, when 'other stuff comes up,' the mechanic calls the customer and tells them of other stuff, and how much other stuff costs. But not this place! They want to make sure they know about all of the stuff so they can charge you for looking at it. It's not a policy. It's a business model. Stay away from this place. I ended up doing as my mechanic advised and used another car for the trips to the mountains. Took the truck into my usual mechanic on the 27th, and they replaced the front left bearing. They called me and said that the front right bearing was making a bit of noise and will eventually need replacement and I said let's do it. Final bill for 2 bearing replacements... $1,245. 5th Gear is a rip off. They double charge for jobs like wheel bearing replacements. You can google it and the first result for that specific year/model states exactly this... "The average cost for a Toyota Tacoma wheel bearing replacement is between $476 and $601." But not at 5th Gear. They need $1,200 per bearing because they sprinkle magic fairy dust on it and have it blessed by the pope. If you get your oil changed here, just stick to that. If you need anything else, go to a real shop that has a bit of integrity. And to the owner who will no doubt reply "I don't know this person and we have no record of them."... Did not have a good experience here. They ended up breaking and losing parts to my car for a simple inspection. When I got it back the remote start I have in it is now broken, the engine cover piece is gone and they have no idea where it went and they couldn't fix the problem I brought it there for. Now I'm out the $900 I paid for the remote start, the $200 cover and the $120 to check for a problem they couldn't find. Not worth going here read more

On a recent and rare trip to the greater Denver area I was helping a friend that was looking for a new place to get some routine maintenance done on her car (a ~8yo F150 I think?). She had noticed a few items and wasn't sure what was going on she was leery of the 'off-brand' shop reputations for poor quality and lack of transparency but also didn't like the huge costs of going to the dealer.... I offered to look into some shops with her and found this gem. I'm not a car-guy but I do know a good place when I see one. I met with the guys in the shop and even the owner who took a good deal of time to look over her vehicle, diagnose the issues that he saw and come up with a plan on what needed to be done... some items were really important others could wait. We decided to leave the truck there and get the immediate fixes done. I was out of town but when I followed up my friend said that she picked up her ride that it was in great shape and the bill was a bit less than expected. As a general rule, prior to taking my car to 5Th gear I hated car repair places with a fiery passion. I'd been jerked around by any number of dealerships and neighborhood places around Denver and Albuquerque. Trust does not come easy with car repair All this has changed since I have been taking my Honda to 5Th gear. I've never had to take my car back to them because something was done incorrectly or half-assed. The staff is friendly and they know their stuff - just ask! They never repair an issue without notifying me first, and haven't given me the 3rd degree when I decided not to fix something or do it myself. read more

The dealership said the "service B" was going to cost $450. Really?! It's just an oil change and the yearly inspection so that seemed a bit steep. As much as I dreaded finding another place to get maintenance done on the Mercedes I did some searching for a certified Mercedes shop and I found 5th Gear listed at the top of all of the lists. They were very friendly and efficient on the phone and I had an appointment set up right away. It was only going to be $135. That's more like it! When I got there, everything was spotless both inside and outside the shop and that's a bonus. Dennis introduced himself immediately and was very helpful. It was going to take a couple of hours so I walked over to 3 Margaritas and grabbed some lunch. When I got back, Dennis explained what the service entailed and what I had to do to maintain service records. My car was left clean and ready to go. Think that's enough? How about this -- Dennis gave me 10% off because I was a first-time customer. Let's just say there will be more than a first time because my Mercedes will be going back to 5th Gear whenever it needs something. A shop really doesn't get any better than this. read more

I had been told by Sill-Terhar (the dealership) that my Mazda had a cracked radiator frame and that I NEEDED to pay $600 for the repair or my radiator would fall out while I was driving, I'd die for sure in a flaming wreck, etc. etc. It was a lot of money, so I took it to 5th Gear for a second opinion. After checking it out for 5 minutes, he told me the crack was cosmetic, neither I nor my car were in any danger at all, and he wouldn't feel right about taking any of my money to fix it because it was not a big deal in any way. Instead of just turning me away, he grabbed some tools and a flashlight, crawled under the car in the parking lot, and fixed it right there and then! After having some odd dealings with another auto service shop, I joined yelp. My son's clutch went out. I picked 5th gear auto based only off of the reviews I read. I must say it was a good decision on my part. I spoke with TRIS or TRIST ( not sure of spelling) He was very honest and told me that they were busy and he could not get to my xterra for 5 days. I respected the fact that he didn't give me some false hope of just trying to get my business , plus I looked at it as if they are that busy , then others must like the service. The car was done exactly when I was told it would be, there was no pressure of up-sale in other services they wanted to do. He called me and told me that the oil was low, which I knew it was because I change my own oil and knew it was ready. He offered to have it topped off, or they could do an oil change, when I asked how much that was going to be, he told me the price, and it was lower than I anticipated. I am comforted in knowing that I believe I have found a mechanic shop that is honest, and seems to be just about good customer service, and not out to get every last dollar. I hope I never have to use them again, but I know that is not likely. But they certainly have earned me as a future customer, and they are worthy of me telling others. Dennis and the staff are *ALWAYS* friendly, always responsive, and never balk at working on my beat up, older than dirt Jeep Cherokee. Two stars for your text alerts for appointment confirmations. I had to reschedule an appointment earlier this week, called before they opened, and no problem! Got a friendly voicemail from the staff and a text alert moments later confirming a new date and time. I love this! Three stars for your fair pricing. I had to have the radiator replaced last fall. Not only did Dennis do the legwork to price parts, labor, and determine what absolutely had to be done versus what we could wait and do later, but the final price was still hundreds below what Goodyear or other mechanics would charge. Today, I brought the Jeep in for a problem with the power windows. Dennis found that the part we needed was obsolete, but he found a vendor right away for a *much* lower price than the retail price he was quoted. The dealer isn't going to do that. Most shops in central Denver won't, either. Four stars for being fair in general. I had a hose spring a leak not long ago. I called 5th Gear first thing and explained the situation. Most mechanics would say bring it in, see it as easy money and leave it at that. Dennis listened to the problem, explained what it was and also explained it would be way cheaper for me to replace it on my own. I don't see this as a negative; I see this as being honest! Five stars for the little things I love about this shop. I love the Great Dane who greets every customer. I love that they don't balk about driving me to my office when I drop off for service. I love that no job is out of reach; today, I'm having work done on the power windows, and the price quoted is beyond fair and reasonable for the work they'll need to do. We've been taking our cars to 5th gear for over 20 years. Really! In 20 years, with 4 cars I had one thing go wrong with a repair - and they quickly fixed it for free. None of our cars has less than 100K miles, and we've had two go over 200K under their care. With cars this old (none made this millenium!) we've taken him a few "interesting" problems -- all were fixed satisfactorily. Andy and his crew are awesome!! If you want an honest and hard working shop 5th Gear is where to go. They have been working on my cars for over a year now. My whole family uses them as well. Dennis and Tris are some of the most friendly people I have met. They never brush me off even though I'm a girl, and always listen to all my concerns. (I am very picky about my cars and know when something is just not right.) Here are a couple of examples of how they go above and beyond. A couple of months ago my dad's van died in the middle of the road. We had it towed to 5th Gear. He works nights so we had them call me to go over the van. They called the next morning to quote me a price on figuring out the problem. Later that day they called back to say they pretty much found the problem right away. In the end there was no point in trying to save the van, so the helped with junking it. They charged us a fraction of the quote even though they could of let us believe it took hours to look over. I needed the brakes done on my dodge ram 1500. I am sad to say I took it to a different shop first, simply because they were closer to where I live. They quoted me $800. When I explained that I wanted to get a second quote and would be by later to get my truck, they were rude and explain my truck was unsafe to drive. I brought it to 5th Gear along with a copy of the first quote. They told me what actually needed to be done, and what didn't. They did the job for less than $200 and my truck is driving beautifully. I won't be making the same mistake twice, they may be a bit far but it is well worth the drive. read more

For the past 2 years, my 2005 Prius would periodically not start right away. The instrument panel would freeze and I had to hold down the start button to reboot the system (like you do on a computer that freezes). My fear was that the problem was electrical. One morning my car would not start at all, the instrument panel would light up and freeze. Because of the reviews on Yelp and because 5th Gear lists Prius as a car they work on, I called them. They towed my car to their shop and found out my car battery (not the expensive ones) needed replaced. With the new batter its like I have a new car. Another mechanic might have played on my fear of the problem being electrical and charged me a lot more. I'll keep going back as long as they stay honest. read more

I'm pretty leery of trying new shops. I have college auto mechanic training and have worked on most vehicles I have owned for the last 30 years - including my bikes. So, I tend to be pretty careful. This trip in was for an alignment after I installed new aftermarket springs and KYB AGX struts on my Soobie. Scheduling was easy, the guy making the appt was cool. Price was cheaper than my normal place for a 4 wheel alignment by $20. Picked it up without a hassle, but good solid info on what changes were made and an issue with the stock top hats I left on it. No attempt to sell me anything either. All in all, I feel comfortable sending my other vehicles in for work. I didn't get the "looking to make a buck" feel here. read more

Dec 6th car broke, It had overheated and blew a radiator line. The next morning, Dec 7th, I had it towed home and called 5th gear. i told Max on the phone that the car overheated and there was also a oil leak i wanted investigate. it had been smelling oil from the heater, and seeing white smoke in the vents. Max agreed and I had their tow company take the vehicle from my home On Dec 8th I was contacted for approval of a High pressure power steering line and radiator hose. when asked about the pressure line i was informed the system was empty and wouldn't hold fluid due to the leak. I asked about the price and was quoted a price over 500.00 when cross referencing this with local dealerships I couldn't find one for over 300. I also looked up the price of the radiator line, it wasn't more than 50.00 but I was charged over 130 according to the receipt. Max told me the price of the power steering line was incorrect, and would be fixed when i arrived. I reluctantly approved the work and was told the car would be ready the next day. On Dec 9th I was told the car was ready and it was going to be over 1200. Before I could ask about any prices Max took the original invoice and replaced it with one that had the power steering pump over 200 dollars lower with no explanation. When I asked about the leaks they told me they had filled the car with UV fluid and I needed to drive it and bring it back in two weeks. Never did they run a complete diagnostics on the vehicle though I was charged for one.They didn't not road test the car before or after any work and the invoice does not provide a clear understanding of the labor that was performed (rate, or length of time) On Dec 13th on the way to work in Boulder i began smelling oil again and upon arriving to work smoke could be seen coming from the engine bay, and vents. i contacted Max, who apologized and had the car Towed back to their shop. Dec 14th I picked the car back up and was told a small leak was found,and UV fluid added again and I need to drive it for up to two week. no work of any kind was preformed at this time. I was not contacted to approve any work, or told that anything was wrong. I have text messages and a voicemail stating this, and that the vehicle was ready again. On Dec 15th I Broke down in Commerce City. I called Uber and while on the way to work spoke to owner. he too apologized but was very defensive telling me "he doesn't have to deal with this" and telling me I was wrong in my assumption that there was an oil problem. after this argument he agreed to tow the car again and would fix it. at approximately 930 pm I drove by his shop to confirm the car was there, and it wasn't so I drove back to Commerce City and found my vehicle still there, in direct contradiction to the agreement made by the owner. I had the car towed back to my home and ran diagnostics. The errors codes that were returned indicated a failed electronic water pump (2E83), and thermostat (2EF5). it also shows an issue with the oil pressure, or it's sensor (2F7B). this should have been detected by the shop as they charged me a diagnostic fee. I have screen shots of the diagnostics, as well as price quotes from dealership verifying this. i was overcharged by at least 100% on parts. I was charged for diagnostics that didn't happen and told by the owner I was wrong for being upset that nothing had been done to correct the situation. read more
